Road House 2024 successfully breaks the streak of failed Patrick Swayze remakes, proving its worth with critics and audiences alike. The remake offers a fresh take on the original, with a new lead character and a more entertaining, polished action-packed plot. With the success of Road House 2024, future Swayze remakes like Ghost and Dirty Dancing sequels have a promising road ahead.
The fact that Road House’s remake succeeded with critics means that the long streak of failed Patrick Swayze remakes has come to an end. 2024’s Road House remake is a crowd-pleasing action thriller by director Doug Liman. Pitting Jake Gyllenhaal’s tough bouncer against Conor McGregor’s unhinged crime boss, the slick remake of Patrick Swayze’s 1989 star vehicle is bruising, brutal, and just silly enough to be entertaining without sacrificing the story’s stakes. This is quite an achievement considering earlier attempts to remake Swayze’s hits proved disastrous,...

Just a few weeks after we reported that The Mummy remake star Marwan Kenzari is in talks to play the villainous Jafar in Disney's Aladdin reboot, it seems the studio has also found the villain's right-hand man. Turkish actor Numan Acar is in talks to portray Hakim, who serves as the "head of the guards" for Jafar in this live-action remake. There was a guard character named Hakim, voiced by Frank Welker, in the original Aladdin movie, but it seems he will be a much more substantial character in this live-action movie.
Deadline broke the news of this casting, but their report did not include Marwan Kenzari as part of the cast, so perhaps his deal has not been finalized at this time. Numan Acar will be joined by Will Smith, who voices The Genie, Mena Massoud as the title character Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine and Nasim Pedrad as Mara,...

According to Deadline, Point Break remake director Ericson Core has signed on to direct The Claim, a drama film that doesn’t sound like it would be an especially big deal if not for the fact that it was written by La La Land’s Damien Chazelle. The movie is about a father with a “criminal background” whose daughter gets kidnapped, but while trying to track her down, a different couple shows up and makes “mysterious claims” that the child actually belongs to them. That makes it sound like the other couple was probably behind the kidnapping, but maybe the daughter was taken by a third party, and the criminal dad has to fight with the mysterious couple to prove that she’s really his daughter and not theirs.
Beyond Point Break, Core also directed the sports movie Invincible and worked as a cinematographer on The Fast And The Furious...

Before Dom was flexing his muscles Cage was getting fast and furious in order to protect his family.
This weekend movie theaters are going to be packed with hordes of people eager to check out The Fate of the Furious, the 8th film in the unexpectedly super popular Fast and Furious franchise. And that’s all fine and well. I enjoy the films; they’re dumb, stupid, exciting fun. Nothing wrong with that whatsoever, but we must remember that a year before Dom and his crew ripped off Point Break, the legendary Nicolas Cage was snatching up cars left and right and doing so in under 60 seconds.
Of course I’m going to talk about Gone in 60 Seconds.
Cage stars as the Memphis Raines, a notorious car thief that retired a number of years back in an effort to go straight. And he does. Memphis is working at a little go-kart track for kids, teaching...

The cast of American Crime Story's third season is starting to take shape, and so far, it's good. According to multiple reports, Darren Criss will be taking on the role of serial killer Andrew Cunanan, who was responsible for murdering fashion designer Gianni Versace outside his home in 1997. Edgar Ramirez (The Girl on the Train, Point Break, The Bourne Ultimatum), meanwhile, will be playing Versace himself. The murder will be the subject of American Crime Story's third season, which will begin shooting next month and will alternate filming with the second season, focusing on the legal issues surrounding Hurricane Katrina. Both seasons will air next year. Versace will be based on the book...

Before his third attempt, Mechanic brought on Randall Wallace, who wrote Braveheart, to take a pass at the script.
.Randall's changes were not earth shattering,. says Mechanic. .He won't be credited in the final screenplay. But I think it might have made it more appealing to Mel to read [that] Randy was working on it..

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

In 1993, a Filipino prospector named Michael de Guzman emerged from the jungles of Busang, Indonesia claiming to have found one of the largest gold deposits on record — he partnered with a Canadian conglomerate called Bre-x Minerals Ltd., and eventually took the fall for the most famous gold mining scandal of the late 20th century.
In 2011, screenwriters Patrick Massett and John Zinman (“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”) decided to take the Bre-x story, arbitrarily transplant it to the late 1980s, and re-conceive it as a trite rise and fall parable about the seduction of the American Dream — the result, ultimately directed without distinction by Stephen Gaghan (“Syriana”), unfolds like a chintzy ripoff of David O. Russell ripping off Martin Scorsese ripping off real life, a movie that tries to sell us the most boring version of a story that has already been panned for all of its treasure and then some.

Thanks to his role in Martin Scorsese’s immortal 1980 classic Raging Bull, Robert De Niro will forever be linked to the sport of boxing in the minds of moviegoers. For the last couple decades, the Oscar-winning actor has been heavily riffing on his past roles for comedic effect in releases like Analyze This, Meet the Parents and Grudge Match, all of which saw De Niro poke fun at his own tough-guy persona and the various archetypes he’s known for. Now he’s back in the world of boxing again – though with a decidedly more dramatic goal in mind – as a key supporting character in writer/director Jonathan Jakubowicz’s Hands of Stone.

The film stars: Clemens Schick, Édgar Ramírez, Luke Bracey, Matias Padin, Ray Winstone and Teresa Palmer. We've added comments from a couple of the critics, below. Tom Russo from the Boston Globe, gave it a less than stellar 63 score, stating: "For all the adrenalizing positives in this reworked Point Break, inadvertent silliness remains." Elizabeth Kerr over at The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 50 score. She said: "Ericson Core’s Point Break strips the silly fun and relatively straight-ahead narrative from the original for a humorless, if photogenic spin on extreme crime." James Marsh over at Screen International, gave it a 40 grade,...

The source of the online leak of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight has been traced to an awards-season DVD screener that had been sent to a leading Hollywood studio executive.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the pirated version of The Hateful Eight available from some file-sharing sites bears a digital watermark that identifies it as a DVD sent to Andrew Kosove, co-ceo of Alcon Entertainment, a major production and finance outfit involved in films such as The 33, Transcendence and the recent remake of Point Break.

After four weeks of box office domination by The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, Lionsgate's franchise finale has finally fallen, to what is now the biggest debut of all time by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Box Office Mojo reports that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has taken in an estimated $238 million during its opening weekend, which is more than enough to dethrone Universal's Jurassic World record of $208.8 million which was set back in June.
The opening weekend record is just one of many box office records that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already broken. Star Wars: The Force Awakens set new marks for highest Thursday preview gross with $57 million, the biggest Friday and single-day gross with $120.5 million, making it the first film ever to earn $100 million in a single day. The box office has been dominated by Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 over the past four weekends, with newcomers like Krampus and last weekend's In the Heart of the Sea failing to take down this franchise finale. This weekend, there are three new movies hitting theaters, but all eyes will be on just one, Disney's highly-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is expected to break box office records.
