In 2011, Rock in Rio was held in its home (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) for the first time in 10 years.

Rock in Rio has been the largest music festival in the world, with 1.5 million people in the first edition, 700,000 in the second, about 1.2 million in the third, and about 350,000 people in each of the 3 Lisbon editions.

Jay-Z was scheduled to perform on October 1, 2011, but cancelled his presentation because of personal matters. Maroon 5 was chosen by a popular quiz to replace him.
