Most proper anime fans will know about Black Butler. The ongoing manga by Yana Toboso has been around since 2006 and currently has 33 volumes to its name. This dark fantasy series never became a mainstream hit, but it gathered a solid fandom and the series is undoubtedly one of the better-known titles in the world of manga and anime. Several anime adaptations have been produced so far, with the most recent one – Black Butler: Public School Arc – premiering on April 13, 2024. Ahead of the release, a main trailer has been revealed.

The first season of Black Butler aired from October 3, 2008, to March 27, 2009, and consisted of a total of 24 episodes. For all the talk of auteurs working on the small screen and helping to usher in a new golden age of television – Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann etc. – it’s hardly a phenomenon only made up of HBO’s current output. Distributor takes psychological thriller for Us, Canada, UK and Ireland.

Music Box Films has acquired rights Japanese horror director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s psychological thriller Penance (Shokuzai) for the Us, Canada, UK and Ireland.

The distributor plans a summer 2014 Us theatrical release followed by DVD and digital platforms.

The four-and-a-half-hour serial drama debuted at Venice in 2012.

Penance begins on a quiet playground when a mysterious stranger approaches a group of young girls, then kidnaps and brutally murders one of them. Wracked with grief, the victim’s unhinged mother demands that the survivors identify the killer or face a penance of her choosing. Growing up in the shadow of this debt, each of the four women cultivates a warped survival mechanism – avoidance, desperation, fear, or obsession.

Kurosawa’s previous features include Cure, Charisma and Pulse.

This year the Festival is presenting only 60 films in total, a number that allows people to see most of the films. HollywoodNews.com: Hot on the heels of the Toronto International Film Festival announcing their titles comes word from Venice about the films to be featured at the 69th Venice Film Festival.

With 60 films, the selection includes a wide range of anticipated titles such as Terrence Malick’s To the Wonder, Passion from Brian De Palma and The Company You Keep directed by Robert Redford, as well as 20 films from female directors. Surprisingly, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master is not included in the lineup, might this mean it will be skipping the festivals? Check out the full list after the jump!

With the line-up for the Toronto International Film Festival dropping a few days ago and the list for Venice out today, the festival circuit has arrived!

The lead stories for the Venice line-up aren't nearly as exciting as those coming out of Toronto. Harmony Korrine's "Spring Breakers" with James Franco and Selena Gomez will make its debut, as will Brian De Palma's "Passion" with Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams.

Perhaps the biggest headline here is the absence of Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master," a film that was expected to appear here. Skipping Venice is just more proof that the rumors of a Fantastic Fest debut may be true.

The Venice Film Festival announced its lineup today, and it has something for everyone: Hollywood A-listers, Disney Channel darlings, a host of foreign films, a Dragon Tattoo alumna — and that’s just what’s in competition for the Golden Lion trophy.

This week sees the line-up announcement of not one but two of the year’s biggest events in the film industry. Toronto International Film Festival’s line-up was officially announced earlier this week, and was absolutely fantastic, and now the Venice International Film Festival have officially announced their line-up, featuring some incredibly anticipated films as well.

The festival will run from 29th August to 8th September, and will be opened by Mira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, making its world debut and premiering out of competition. Generally you can find plenty of information about your favorite stateside filmmaker, and depending on who they are (see: David Gordon Green), you can find a long list of potential upcoming projects to investigate. But being head-over-heels for a foreign director is a different story -- without the Hollywood system or independent film cliques to generate word of mouth or gossip, you can spend years without hearing a peep from even the biggest festival sweethearts, and only last week were were discussing around the Playlist water cooler where some of our favorite international filmmakers had gone in the last few years.
