‘Maybe Happy Ending’: Darren Criss’ New Musical Shows the Lovesick Side of AI
Image
Whether he’s standing under the glare of a spotlight on a Broadway stage, or perched in front of an open window at a bustling Nolita coffeeshop, one fact stays the same: Darren Criss practically vibrates with energy. And that observation isn’t just because Criss currently stars in the new Broadway musical Maybe Happy Ending, where in a world filled with robots, energy is everything.

Criss plays Oliver, a life-like “Helper-Bot” living out his lifespan in a small apartment in Seoul, Korea. For all his robotic tendencies, stiff limbs,...

Listen: Darren Criss Had a ‘Really Rough’ Time Shooting ‘Hollywood’ and ‘Royalties’ Simultaneously
Image
When Darren Criss was filming “Hollywood,” he was also shooting his Quibi series “Royalties” and traveling to Las Vegas for a series of concerts he was headlining with Steve Aoki.

“There was, like, a Sprinter van with an editing bay in it that would come to set on ‘Hollywood,’ to where I’d be shooting a scene on ‘Hollywood,’ and then I would go edit music videos in the van for like 20 minutes on my break and then go back to shooting ‘Hollywood,’” Criss, 33, says on Wednesday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket” from his home in Los Angeles. “I would be clean-shaven on ‘Hollywood,’ then I would go to the ‘Royalties’ set with a fake beard to match my beard. Then I’m flying to Vegas…to do these shows with Steve Aoki. It was just insane. Again, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Margot Robbie, Ben Affleck, & Daren Criss meet the 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' cast
Margot Robbie, Ben Affleck, and Darren Criss took in a showing of J.K. Rowling and Jack Thorne's Harry Potter and the Cursed Child recently in what became a pop culture party on a London stage. From these images posted on the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Facebook page, it looks like Affleck took his daughter Violet to see the hot-ticket performance. We already knew Robbie was a huge Harry Potter nerd so I imagine this event was also very special for her. So that's Batman and Harley Quinn meeting Harry Potter (and family) but what happens when Potter meets Potter? Also joining them for the show was Glee actor Criss which must have been surreal indeed. Criss played Harry Potter in StarKid Production's A Very Potter Musical parody many years ago. Here that is if you haven't seen it.

There are going to be So many treats for Disney fans at the ‘Little Mermaid’ concert screenings
Robin Williams, Jonathan Freeman, Gilbert Gottfried, Linda Larkin, Douglas Seale, Scott Weinger, and Frank Welker in Aladdin (1992)
Sebastian sure knows how to throw a party under the sea. But it sounds like even he would be impressed by the party that’s coming together for Disney fans under the clamshell of the Hollywood Bowl next week. The Little Mermaid will get the live concert screening treatment at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on June 3, 4, and 6. The event’s creative director, Richard Kraft, has told HitFix the deets on all the exciting plans for the three shows that are sure to make Disney fans squee. Film screenings paired with a live orchestra performance of the movie’s score is no new thing. (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Back to the Future are among the concert screenings at the Bowl HitFix has reported on in the past.) But events like this, for a musical, with live singing timed to picture, are new. As far as Kraft is aware, last Halloween...

Drafthouse Films Picks Up Rights to Long-Gestating 'Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made'
A Very Potter Musical (2009)
Read More: Review: 'Raiders!' is a Bittersweet Tale of the World's Greatest Fan FilmMovies, more so than probably any other entertainment medium, generate incredible fandom. Historically, the most powerful fan-makers in the movie business are great film franchises. These film goliaths inspire such a response from fans that not only do fans pretend to be characters in the films, but they create countless supplementary works to them, commonly called "fan fiction."  Some of the great fan fiction works include "A Very Potter Musical," which retells the story of Harry Potter in musical form; "The Problem of Susan," written by Neil Gaiman, which fills in the the blank that C.S. Lewis left at the end of his "Chronicles of Narnia" series involving Susan Pevensie; and even works that have become well known in their own right, such as "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," based off of Jane Austen's masterpiece.

‘Glee’ May Suck Now, But It Changed the Goddamn World
We know it’s hard to believe, but the last episode of Glee ~*eVeR*~ airs tonight. The New Directions have given us an incredible six years of singing, dancing, and awkward teen sexual tension, but it’s time for them to leave the show choir room for good. Admittedly, the most recent seasons of Glee haven’t been that great (this season especially, with its self-referencing jokes and out-of-control fat-shaming). However, we can’t let Ryan Murphy’s inability to craft a third act stop us from honoring Glee. When it was good, it was really fucking good. And, more importantly, it changed culture forever.

From putting gay teens on primetime to introducing us to living Ken doll/actual sex god Darren Criss, Glee wasn’t afraid to go where television had never been before. It broke racial, sexual, and gender boundaries — not to mention it brought the musical back in a big way.

'A Very Potter Senior Year': Darren Criss & Team StarKid's last Potter parody hits YouTube
Darren Criss
In the beginning, God and Darren Criss created Harry Potter: The Musical, a madcap Harry Potter parody originally performed at the University of Michigan in 2009. The musical, cowritten by Matt Lang, Nick Lang, and Brian Holden and produced by StarKid Productions, arrived on YouTube that summer and quickly went viral, inspiring a 2010 sequel that helped to launch Criss into mainstream stardom. (Its popularity also inspired a name change meant to stave off the litigious Warner Bros; that’s why you now know the show as A Very Potter Musical.)

Potter’s Harry soon joined the cast of Glee, and StarKid...

Darren Criss and Team Starkid return to Hogwarts -- Video
Jane Lynch, Lea Michele, Naya Rivera, Mark Salling, Matthew Morrison, Cory Monteith, Dianna Agron, Kevin McHale, Chris Colfer, Jenna Ushkowitz, Amber Riley, and Heather Elizabeth Morris in Glee (2009)
Before Darren Criss was a star of the Broadway stage and the small screen, he was just a wizard, standing in front of Ginny Weasley, asking her to love him.

Criss shot to fame in 2009, when a Harry Potter parody he co-wrote went viral on YouTube. A Very Potter Musical’s various parts have since been viewed millions of times, allowing Criss and his comrades — collectively, they’re known as Team StarKid — to create a similarly popular sequel in 2010, as well as a variety of other productions. But when Hollywood beckoned that same year, Criss moved on to bigger things,...

Darren Criss on Harry Potter and Why He Prefers Theater
Darren Criss may have gained Hollywood-level fame for his role on “Glee,” but his first love is musical theater. His passion for a live audience showed on Sunday night when he hosted the 13th Annual Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards, kicking off the evening with an acoustic guitar and a comedic tune. He also took home an award himself, winning Favorite Replacement for his three-week stint on “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”“Well, I’m glad to see that Broadway.com kept up their end of the bargain,” said Criss, to much laughter.Criss replaced Daniel Radcliffe as J. Pierrepont Finch in January. It wasn’t the first time that the “Glee” star stepped into Radcliffe’s shoes, however. In 2009, he played Harry Potter in Team StarKid’s (his production company) theatrical parody of the books, “A Very Potter Musical.” Back Stage caught up with Criss before...

Holy Musical Batman! The Caped Crusader Gets A Song And Dance Spectacular
While fully aware my next statement will enrage the cult of Nolan fandom, here it is: I prefer Michael Keaton-era Batman. I like a Batman who is aware of how absurd it is to dress as a giant bat while fighting crime vigilante-style, and has a sense of humor about it. And from the looks of Team Starkid's new musical, it seems I'm not alone. Team Starkid is a enthusiastic ensemble of writers, directors, actors, designers, and other artists, who express their love of pop culture, fantasy, and sci-fi through incredibly ambitious works of theatrical parody productions, like A Very Potter Musical and their latest Holy Musical B@man! Inspired by the more cartoonish elements of the Batman legacy, writers/directors Matt Lang and Nick Lang offer a full-length song-studded adventure about the caped crusader that boasts appearances from such classic Batman pun-loving villains as Catwoman, The Riddler, The Penguin,...

'Glee's' Darren Criss is Spokesperson for Musical Contest
Darren Criss can now add spokesperson to his growing list of jobs, in addition to actor, singer, musician, and lyricist. The 25-year-old will represent the Los Angeles Festival of New American Musicals' 2012 "Show Search," a contest seeking the best new musical written by young Americans. Many may think Criss first came to fame thanks to leading a rendition of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" on the TV show "Glee," but his breakout role was actually of his own making. After graduating from the University of Michigan, Criss and his friends founded a media and musical theater production in 2009. Its shows "A Very Potter Musical" and "A Very Potter Sequel," parodies based on the Harry Potter novels with music and lyrics by Criss, went viral and have been viewed more than 100 million times on YouTube.  To enter "Show Search," high school and college-age applicants need to submit a ten-minute...

Exclusive: Darren Criss, Team StarKid Share Tour Footage
By Rae Votta

Glee might have been Darren Criss’ national introduction as a song-and-dance man, but his legions of Internet fans already knew him as a singing Harry Potter for Team StarKid, the musical-theater social-media phenomenon. Between shooting Glee and debuting on Broadway in How to Succeed, Criss joined the rest of Team StarKid for part of their first national tour last fall, and he stopped by VH1 earlier this month with some of his co-founders to share some exclusive footage from the tour. They also told us about a possible West Coast and U.K. leg of their jaunt, as they hope bring StarKid beyond the confines of the Net.

“StarKid is an Internet musical theater production group we started in college together and have been doing our best to run since we’ve been out of college,” co-founder Brian Holden explained for the uninformed.

For the most dedicated "Twilight" fans, the yearlong wait between the theatrical releases of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" and "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" is painful, to say the least. Luckily, due to the popularity of the franchise and vampires in general, there are a variety of ways to bridge the gap, a few of which we touched on previously via fan suggestions. These include re-reading the books and re-watching the already-released movies, as well as getting your vampire fix via TV shows like "The Vampire Diaries" and "True Blood."

The latest addition to the fangtastic fray is the off-Broadway musical parody "Twilight: The Musical." MTV News' own Amy Wilkinson was lucky enough to attend the first preview in New York Monday.

Robert Pattinson Role in Twilight: The Musical Filled!
Robert Pattinson Role in Twilight: The Musical Filled!

If you have heard rumors about a Twilight musical and thought maybe it was a cruel joke, then you are totally mistaken. It’s real and casting has officially begun. Before you turn red in the face, let me explain just what this musical is. This isn’t just another incarnation of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga, like, say, the graphic novels, which are just that. No, my friends, this musical project is a parody. Does that make it more exciting?

Laughter is the best medicine, right? Well, Twilight: The Musical will make its off-Broadway debut on January 16th. Getting a ticket might be murder. The event is a one-night-only staged reading and the proceeds go to the charity “Blessings in a Backpack”. I hear you can already see clips of the performance on youtube. Lauren Lopez will play Alice. You may...

Twilight: The Musical is a one-shot show that will be presented at New World Stages on January 16 at 8Pm, according to Playbill, but it sounds like it will be an interesting evening if you happen to be in the neighborhood because you get two blockbuster franchises rolled into one.

In addition to the cast performing characters such as Bella, Rosalie, Alice, and Jasper, a couple of magical appearances will occur when Harry Potter and Hermione also show up. Yes, it’s the crossover we’ve all been waiting for as vampires and wizards finally meet.
