Disney’s Onyx Collective is looking to put a new spin on one of the most famous locales of early 2000s TV.

Onyx is developing Wisteria Lane, a spinoff/reimagining of ABC’s 2004-12 hit Desperate Housewives. The project comes from writer/executive producer Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant, Queen of the South) and EP Kerry Washington. Should it go forward, Wisteria Lane would stream on Hulu alongside Onyx Collective’s other shows.

Like Desperate Housewives, Wisteria Lane will focus on a group of friends living on a seemingly picture-perfect cul de sac whose facade hides a boatload of secrets. Marc Cherry, who created Desperate Housewives, is not currently involved in the new project (though he has spoken about his own spinoff ideas in the past) but sources say he could come aboard in the future.

The new month has already seen the premiere of one of its most anticipated series, Disney+’s “Daredevil” revival, “Daredevil: Born Again,” but several other major series will have their premieres or returns this month, including the final seasons of “The Righteous Gemstones” and “Bosch: Legacy,” the Season 3 return of “Dark Winds,” and the new workplace comedy “The Studio,” starring and created by Seth Rogan.

On the film side, two award season favorites will make their streaming debuts this month: the understated prison drama “Sing Sing,” starring Oscar nominee Colman Domingo, and the musical blockbuster “Wicked,” starring double nominees Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

Iconic indie producer Christine Vachon is getting her due from the 2025 Austin Film Festival. IndieWire can exclusively announce that Vachon will be feted with the acclaimed Polly Platt Award for Producing at this year’s Aff Writers Conference, which will take place from October 23 to 26. “Dear White People” showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser will also be honored with the Outstanding Television Writer Award during the annual conference.

Vachon is an Independent Spirit Award and Gotham Award winner who co-founded powerhouse Killer Films with partner Pamela Koffler in 1995. Across 30 years, the duo’s banner has produced more than 100 acclaimed films, including “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” “Far from Heaven,” “Still Alice,” “Past Lives” (which landed Vachon her first Oscar nomination in the Best Picture category), and “Carol.”

Vachon launched her career at Sundance in 1991 with her first feature film, which was “Carol” auteur Todd Haynes’ Grand Jury Prize-winning “Poison.

Winners for this year’s NAACP Image Awards — which celebrate the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film — were announced daily this week, culminating in the live telecast that aired Saturday night on CBS and BET.

Heading into this year’s awards, Ayo Edebiri was the most-nominated TV performer with four total nominations — three for her work on FX’s The Bear, and another for her memorable hosting debut on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Delroy Lindo has entered the MonsterVerse.

The veteran actor, who will next be seen fighting vampires in Ryan Coogler’s upcoming Sinners, has closed a deal to join the cast of Legendary’s latest installment of its Godzilla-King Kong movie franchise.

Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) is directing the creature feature, which showcases gigantic monsters and the humans caught in between.

Plot details from the David Callaham-written script are being kept under the Earth’s crust, but Legendary has said the story will feature “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”

Kaitlyn Dever, who is new to the franchise, is headlining the human cast that also includes Jack O’Connell as her brother and Dan Stevens, who played laid-back monster veterinarian and dentist Trapper in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Starring Kerry Washington (known for her recent work on UnPrisoned), Scandal highlights Olivia Pope, a former presidential media consultant who opens a crisis-management firm. However, she and her team quickly learn the challenges of cleaning up other people's lives while trying to do the same for themselves.

Featured heavily in Season 1 is Henry Ian Cusick as Stephen Finch, a litigator who works closely with Olivia in Washington, D.C., and forms a friendship with her.

“How to Die Alone,” the comedy series created by and starring Natasha Rothwell, has been canceled after one season on Hulu.

The series hailed from Onyx Collective, a Disney content brand that produces projects created by people of color and from underrepresented communities. Onyx gave “How to Die Alone” a series order in November of 2022 before releasing it in September 2024.

In a statement to Variety, Rothwell wrote that she is “shocked, heartbroken and frankly, baffled” at Onyx’s decision. Though a source close to the studio indicates that viewership wasn’t strong enough to renew “How to Die Alone,” Rothwell argues that it was “an undeniable critical, creative and award-winning success.” Indeed, the series achieved a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Variety‘s review calling it “skillfully crafted” and Rothwell’s performance “flawless.” It also won the Independent Spirit Award for ensemble cast in a new scripted series and has three...

It’s been an 8-year journey for the directors of the documentary “Daughters” to reach the IndieWire Honors stage on Thursday, December 5 in Hollywood. Filmmakers Angela Patton and Natalie Rae have watched the film’s young subjects grow up and bear their souls, and in accepting the Magnify Award, they made sure to dedicate their prize to those young women.

Ahead, “Daughters” executive producer Kerry Washington tells IndieWire about the many qualities that set our Magnify Award winners Angela Patton and Natalie Rae apart — and what the film’s essential message of uplifting young Black girls meant to her.

The Netflix-released documentary follows four girls as they prepare for a Daughter Daddy Dance with their fathers, who are incarcerated, as part of a groundbreaking program started by Patton at a Washington, D.C. jail. Kerry Washington signed on ahead of the film’s Sundance premiere.

Although Kerry Washington finds the fact that she’s receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame “surreal,” her father, Earl Washington, thinks she should’ve gotten a star a lot sooner.

“Anytime he would hear that somebody was getting one, he was like, ‘Why don’t you have one?’” Washington tells Variety, laughing as she recounts their conversations. “I was like, ‘I don’t know, Dad. I don’t make those decisions.’ So I feel like he’s manifested this moment. I’m excited that I get to share it with him.”

Washington’s father is right. She could’ve been honored anytime in her nearly 25-year career — with a resume highlighted by standout turns in films like “Save the Last Dance,” “The Last King of Scotland,” “She Hate Me” and “Ray,” all before she landed the role of D.C. fixer Olivia Pope on ABC’s “Scandal.

“Reasonable Doubt” has been renewed for Season 3 at Hulu, Variety has learned.

The legal drama series airs under the Onyx Collective brand at the Disney-backed streaming service and was the first scripted show to launch under that brand. Season 2 of the show wrapped up in October after premiering in August, while the first season originally debuted on Hulu in 2022.

Emayatzy Corinealdi leads the series as Jacqueline “Jax” Stewart, who is described as “a Los Angeles-based high-powered criminal defense attorney, as she deals with past traumas, a struggling marriage, motherhood and a murder case, all while trying to keep her life together.”

Along with Corinealdi, the cast of the series includes McKinley Freeman, Morris Chestnut, Tim Jo, Angela Grovey, Thaddeus J. Mixson, and Aderinsola Olabode.
