Back in January of 2022, we heard that Insidious franchise creator James Wan was producing a “Back to the Future meets Aliens” project that was set to be written and directed by Jeremy Slater, creator of the The Exorcist television series and head writer on the Marvel / Disney+ show Moon Knight. As the Wan / Blumhouse collaboration Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth film in that series, made its way out into the world in 2023, it was revealed that Slater’s movie was a spin-off called Thread: An Insidious Tale, which had Mandy Moore (This Is Us) and Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals) on board to star in it. That movie never seemed to go into production, but last year Sony announced an August 29, 2025 release date for the next Insidious movie – not Thread, but Insidious 6. That project hasn’t gone into production yet, either. So it wasn’t a surprise to hear Sony was...

Hot take: there's no such thing as too many home-invasion horror movies. Sometimes, they just hit the spot. While you're gearing up for The Strangers: Chapter 1, a reboot of 2008's menacing instant classic The Strangers, now's the perfect time to reach back a decade and catch one you might have missed. Kristy, a 2014 horror/thriller that flew mostly under the radar, hits all the chords that a relatively short and easily digestible genre member should. Directed by Olly Blackburn and led by Haley Bennett, who carries nearly every moment of the film entirely on her own, Kristy takes home-invasion horror to the collegiate level. Stranded by choice in the dorm buildings of her university over Thanksgiving break, Justine (Bennett) is stalked and hunted by a group of sadistic killers who aim to eliminate the "Kristys" of the world. Kristy is a term they've coined, a play on "Christians," to represent...

While Thanksgiving is not traditionally associated with horror, there are several Thanksgiving-themed horror movies that range from comedic to intense and gruesome. Some notable Thanksgiving horror movies include Thankskilling, a horror comedy featuring a killer talking turkey, The Oath, a dark political satire about a family gathering turned violent, and Black Friday, a gory horror comedy starring Bruce Campbell. Other Thanksgiving horror movies include The Boneyard, a horror comedy that starts out serious and becomes more ludicrous, Blood Rage, an infamously gruesome Thanksgiving slasher, and Kristy, a terrifying dorm invasion horror movie.
While Eli Roth’s new horror film, Thanksgiving, is a huge success, it's far from the first scary movie centered on the titular holiday. You'd think Halloween would be the holiday that the lion's share of holiday-themed horror movies would center around. But that would have to be Christmas, which has inspired the likes of classics such as "Black Christmas," "Silent Night, Deadly Night," "Gremlins," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," the incredible "Tales From The Crypt" segment "And All Through The House," and so many more.
Maybe it's because Christmas is supposed to represent the pinnacle of goodness and charity that mucking it all up with blood, guts, and terror is just too perverse to resist. But of all the other holidays on the calendar, Thanksgiving gets my vote for the most untapped potential, horror-wise. Pilgrims? Unseasoned food? Family coming to my house? Wake me up when the nightmare is over.
While there has been a solid assortment of Thanksgiving-themed shockers over the years, from "Kristy" to "Séance" to the delightfully campy "Into The Dark" film "Pilgrim,...

No, you don’t have to do a double-take. You did just see Haley Bennett in The Magnificent Seven, and now she’s back only a few short weeks later with another blockbuster affair, Tate Taylor’s The Girl On The Train. The Paula Hawkins adaptation also stars Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Theroux and Luke Evans, but Bennett gets to star as arguably the most important cog in Hawkins’ twisty, mysterious machine. For those of you who read the book during its best-seller run, Bennett plays the part of Megan Hipwell. You know how things go.
For those who don’t, understand that Tate Taylor’s suburban nightmare is never what it seems. The film itself has screened to some pretty rocky reviews so far, so it looks like I’m in the minority of critics who believe The Girl On The Train is a homegrown story of passion...

The decision to catch just one last wave almost costs Nancy (Blake Lively) her life in the first of two clips from Sony's new thriller The Shallows, hitting theaters June 29. This clip shows Nancy interacting with two fellow surfers who plan on calling it a day, when Nancy reveals she wants to stay out for just one more run. Little does she know that a deadly shark is lurking in these seemingly-peaceful waters.
The second clip , which surfaced on YouTube, features Nancy showing off her surfing skills for these strangers, before this killer shark is seen stalking its prey. With just a few weeks left until The Shallows hits theaters on June 29, it isn't known if another trailer will be released from this upcoming thriller. Blake Lively leads a minimalist cast that also includes Oscar Jaenada, Sedona Legge and Brett Cullen.
This taut thrill-ride centers on Nancy (Blake Lively), who is surfing on a secluded beach, when she finds herself on the feeding ground of a great white shark. Though she is stranded only 200 yards from shore, survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of Nancy's ingenuity, resourcefulness, and fortitude. We learned in an earlier trailer that Nancy has come to this beach after her mother passed away, but there isn't much else we know about the story. This project was formerly known as In the Deep, which previously had Louis Leterrier set to direct.
Sony Pictures has set a June 29 release date, which falls on the Wednesday before The Bfg, The Purge: Election Year and The Legend of Tarzan are set to hit theaters. Jaume Collet-Serra directs The Shallows. The filmmaker was first introduced to audiences with his 2005 remake House of Wax, but he has become better known for his collaborations with action icon Liam Neeson. They first worked together on 2011's Unknown, before reuniting on Non-Stop and last year's Run All Night. They will next team-up for The Commuter, which arrives in 2017.
Anthony Jaswinski wrote The Shallows, a script that wound up on the coveted Black List. He also wrote the 2010 thriller Vanishing on 7th Street, Kristy and his directorial debut Killing Time. Weimaraner Republic Pictures partners Lynn Harris and Matti Leshem are producing. Take a look at these new clips from The Shallows, and stay tuned for more as we get closer to the June 29 release date.

Earlier this year, Ryan Reynolds proved that R-rated superhero movies can hit it big at the box office, with his smash hit Deadpool shattering records left and right. Later this month, the actor's wife Blake Lively is hoping for a hit of her own with the upcoming shark thriller The Shallows, which hits theaters on June 29. Today we have a final trailer, which takes a unique approach to the journey Blake Lively's character Nancy must endure.
Sony Pictures debuted this new trailer on YouTube, which features plenty of footage but no dialogue from Blake Lively. Instead, the footage is matched with audio from a 1951 educational video entitled Developing Self-Reliance, with the narrator talking about how developing skills for self-reliance takes hard work. The footage shows Nancy surfing by herself, when a massive shark knocks her off her board, forcing her to take refuge on a rock, while this deadly predator circles around her.

Blumhouse Productions is best known for its contributions to the horror genre, with such frightfests as Sinister, Insidious and The Purge in its body of work. But if you take one look at its upcoming slate, you’ll begin to understand that Blumhouse is looking to broaden its horizons in a big way. One of the most curious projects in the works over at the studio is a revenge Western called In A Valley of Violence.
