‘Harbin’ To Be Present At Christmas
Poised to be one of the biggest blockbusters of an uneven year for Korean cinema, “Harbin” is finally confirmed to release on Christmas Day (Dec. 25). The movie had its premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival but its distributor and financier Cj Enm chose to hold back the commercial release in its native Korea until the busy end-of-year season.
The period action film follows Korean independence activists who launch a daring attack against the Japanese occupying forces in Manchuria (modern-day China).
It is directed by Woo Min-ho and stars Hyun Bin (“Crash Landing on You”), Park Jeong-min (“Decision to Leave”) and Jeon Yeo-been (“Cobweb”), who were all in action at a press launch event Monday in Seoul.

“Thou Shalt Not Steal,” an upcoming Australian series that premiered three of its eight episodes at the Toronto International Film Festival, is an entertaining road trip that cleverly tells an Aboriginal tale through use of humor and dozens of instantly recognizable Australia stereotypes.
It is packaged as eight half-hour episodes that will upload to Australian streamer Stan on Oct. 17. International rights are handled by Dcd Rights.
Told through the eyes of a young Aboriginal delinquent woman, “Thou Shalt Not Steal” races through a 1980s-medley of toxic masculinity, functioning alcoholics, snags on the barbie, reverence for the Outback and the quiet wisdom of the indigenous population.
But it is a fun and inviting ride as Robyn and an awkward white teenager (played by fellow “Heartbreak” star Will McDonald) flee her small central desert community in a stolen taxi. On their heels – and sometimes ahead of them – are a snake-like ex-hooker and the boy’s domineering father,...

It was here last year that Stefiuk was able to clear his head and write the most personal section of his first film, a 22-minute short called The Clearing. “It was the first film that didn’t involve school,” says Stefiuk, who studied film production at Concordia University in Montreal.
I met Stefiuk and other students at last year’s Telluride. He recently sent me a copy of The Clearing, and it’s a beautifully poetic work that he shot in the Gaspésie region of the St. Lawrence River.

Last week, Australia’s screen industries were celebrating an increase in the country’s Location Offset scheme, but this week “great angst” is washing through the production community.
That’s according to Screen Producers Australia CEO Matthew Deaner, who has warned that while the government keeps overdue streaming regulation on hold, Australia is “on track to develop more as a service provider for Hollywood productions.”
“While the recent confirmation of the increase in Australia’s Location Offset that benefits non-Australian projects was great news, the absence of commensurate certainty for Australia’s home-grown industry and Australian projects through streaming regulation is now causing great angst in our industry,” said Deaner.
The Spa supported raising the Location Offset rebate for TV and film productions shooting in the country from the previous 16.5% to 30%, which will likely trigger more overseas investment, and the service work it could bring, but has been vocally critical...

Commissioning by streamers in Australia has plummeted to a new low, according to a new report published today by the Aussie industry union Screen Producers Australia (Spa).
The Spa’s report surveyed its members with 80% of respondents citing “Less” or “Much Less” commissioning interest from streaming services compared to last year.
Respondents to the survey quoted a range of negative impacts of the slowdown, including the mental health of crew to the financing of projects, with 54% stating the slowdown had impacted every stage of the production process, from initial meetings to development and into production.
When asked what the most common reason given by the streamers for the slowdown was, the Spa report says respondents named a “global slowdown in investment” as the top reason while several noted “awaiting government regulation” as the true undercurrent that has affected the industry productivity.

Australian producers are “at risk” of becoming “slaves” to international streamers, a top industry body has warned, as the debate around regulation heats up in the country.
Screen Producers Australia (Spa) made the comment in a statement issued to the National Cultural Policy inquiry hearing today for the government’s upcoming ‘Revive’ plan. Streaming regulation has become the hot button topic since the long-term plan to revamp the arts in the country was first announced in January last year.
Spa, which represents most of Australia’s main producers, has been consistently vocal in its criticism of the global streamers. It is advocating for the likes of Netflix and Prime Video to spend a minimum 20% of their local revenues on Australian content within three years.

The time travel slasher comedy Totally Killer is scheduled to begin streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video on October 6th, but today, one week out from the release, the marketing department has unveiled a clip from the film that I would have deemed too much of a Spoiler to show off. Australian entertainment is having a moment. “Bluey” has become a favorite of children and parents around the world and has even led to American kids speaking with Australian accents. “Neighbors,” the long-running Australian soap opera that helped launch the careers of stars like Russell Crowe, Kylie Minogue, and Chris Hemsworth, was given a second chance after being picked up by Amazon Freevee. And three new Australian series have reached 10 times the demand for the average series in the U.S. since May.
Leading the pack is Amazon Prime Video’s “Deadloch,” which premiered in June. “The Clearing,” a Disney+ original thriller available on Hulu in the U.S., was released around the same time as “Deadloch” and had similar demand. Since Aug. 5, “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” another Prime Video original, has had higher demand in the U.S. than any other Australian series released this year.

Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive clip from the character-driven documentary series The Fourth Wall, which premiered in early June at the Tribeca Film Festival. The docuseries is told from the perspective of Keith Newton, who was born into the Sullivanian cult courtesy of his father, leader Sal Newton. Hiding in plain sight during the 1970s and '80s, the Sullivanians were a “psychotherapy sex cult” on Manhattan's Upper West Side that eschewed the nuclear family dynamic. In their heyday, they even ran an experimental theater troupe called the Fourth Wall.
The Fourth Wall explores the draw of such an organization, like many other cult documentaries before it. Audiences will be introduced to Newton's perversion of psychiatrist Harry Stack Sullivan's teachings as well as understand the allure of affordable rent options in New York City, but they will also learn about the lasting effects on the members.

The Australian psychological horror movie Run Rabbit Run features a cast of recognizable names led by Succession star Sarah Snook. Premiering at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival before landing on Netflix, Run Rabbit Run centers on a fertility doctor who must cope with her daughter's sudden obsession with the past. Following in the footsteps of other notable Aussie horror films like The Babadook, Run Rabbit Run puts the trauma of motherhood at the forefront of the story and delivers chills that are sometimes supernatural, and sometimes psychological. Embodying the modern "elevated horror" genre, Run Rabbit Run offers a terrifying feast for the senses.
Written by Australian novelist Hannah Kent (Burial Rites), and directed by Daina Reid (The Handmaids Tale), Run Rabbit Run was met with a tepid response from critics, and the reviews were generally poor (via Rotten Tomatoes). Most criticisms were leveled at the movie's lack of substance, as some...

In the previous episode of The Clearing, Adrienne’s transformative journey and the emergence of her cult, The Kindred, took center stage. However, in this episode, the narrative shifted back to the timeline where Freya Haywood, aka Amy, was determined to uncover the truth behind Carrie Anderson’s kidnapping. Freya had harbored reservations about her brother Anton, and her suspicions intensified when she noticed a van similar to the one associated with the abduction of Carrie. However, Inspector Joe Saad was initially reluctant to believe Anton could be involved. In this episode, Amy relentlessly searched for concrete evidence regarding the true kidnapper’s identity, but her quest for the truth could be a perilous journey for her as well as her family.

Thirteen months ago, we learned that Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Olivia Holt (Cruel Summer) had signed on to star in the time travel slasher Totally Killer for Blumhouse. Now the Motion Picture Association has confirmed that their ratings board has given Totally Killer an R rating for “bloody violence, language, sexual material, and teen drug/alcohol use“… which is pretty much what I would expect to see in a slasher.
Nahnatchka Khan (Always Be My Maybe) directed the film from a screenplay by Hocus Pocus 2 writer Jen D’Angelo, based on an original script by David Matalon (The Clearing) and Sasha Perl-Raver (Let’s Get Merried). The story follows Jamie (Shipka) whose mom, Pam, is terrorized by the resurgence of the Sweet Sixteen Killer — a masked maniac that slaughtered a group of teenage girls in the ‘80s. With the help of her friend Amelia, Jamie travels back in time...
