BBC Studios has acquired a minority stake in U.K. production company Samphire Films, co-founded by the creator of Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action and Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test. BBC Studios said it would “support its rapid growth and global expansion.”

Samphire Films was founded in 2024 by Sophie Leonard and BBC Documentaries commissioning editor David Hodgkinson “to deliver the next generation of premium unscripted content to buyers on both sides of the Atlantic.”

BBC Studios said that Samphire is in production on “yet-to-be-announced large-scale factual formats and premium documentary projects for buyers in both the UK and USA.”

Exclusive: Popular Channel 4 panel show 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown appears to be the latest to have been hit by the network’s slowdown.

Deadline is told that Channel 4 has been sitting on the current series since it was delivered last year and there are no plans to record a new series this year.

“We have already shot episodes which are ready to air,” said a spokeswoman. “To keep the show current we will shoot further episodes nearer transmission.”

Channel 4 wasn’t able to say when the new episodes will be shot.

Tempting Fortune, the Paddy McGuinness-hosted adventure reality series, has been given the greenlight for a supersized second season, although U.S. co-pro partner Roku is no longer involved. Danny Dyer-hosted Scared of the Dark, in which celebrities are locked in a pitch-black space for a week, will no longer be seeing the light of day and has been axed.

The move ends a several-months-long period of speculation over which major 2023 launches would be given the nod for Season 2 during which Channel 4 also culled Studio Lambert’s Traitors-esque Rise and Fall and its version of U.S. History channel hit Alone, the latter revealed by Deadline last week.

Fremantle has backed the new indie forged by Channel 4’s former entertainment boss Phil Harris.

Harris has unveiled Boldprint Studios and Fremantle, his former employer, has taken a minority stake.

Deadline revealed Harris’ departure several months ago and we understand he had for a long time planned to set up his own production outfit. He has also signed a Creative Director, Lou Hutchinson, who used to be the Head of Entertainment at I Kissed a Boy producer Twofour.

Harris said Boldprint will “be built on creating bold, scalable global formats; an ambition which aligns perfectly with Fremantle’s global distribution plans.”

Ward moved over from Vice Studios, where she was global president, and has jumped into the challenge of stewarding one of the world’s most powerful factual brands, which includes 66-year-old leader in the space the BBC’s Natural History Unit (Nhu).

Ahead of Ward’s trip to Mipcom, she sat down with Variety to discuss the changes she’s implemented over the past year and what she’s looking forward to spotlighting in Cannes.

How would you describe your remit as head of BBC Studios’ factual portfolio?

I’m in the really, really lucky position that BBC Studios Factual is one of the pillars of our production business. We are working across an incredible range from natural history, specialist factual, docs, popular factual and formats, so we’re really reaching across the whole of that factual genre.
