Netflix's epic sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem, is "nonsense" in terms of scientific plausibility, according to a scientist. Given how science fiction shows never promise to be scientifically accurate, this criticism should not be surprising. However, it still underscores how far the Netflix sci-fi TV show and its source material expect audiences to stretch their suspension of disbelief.
Dr. Paul Sutter, who is a cosmologist and astrophysicist, reacted (via Insider) to two scenes from Netflix's 3 Body Problem. After initially explaining the real meaning of the three-body problem and appreciating the show's use of the term "syzygy," he delved deep into how the series' depiction of syzygies creating strong gravitational pulls is a little too extreme.
He also criticized 3 Body Problem's portrayal of how new dimensions unfold, highlighting how it makes little sense. Overall, he gave the sequence from the show a "3/10" for realism, saying that its...

Often referred to by Chinese literary critics as the most influential piece of science fiction of the last two decades, Liu Cixin‘s “The Three-Body Problem” – known simply as “Three Body” within national borders – finally got its comic book adaptation after spanning across multiple media. The final result, while unpleasantly drab and standardized in its visual approach to the subject, does justice to the original thanks to its compelling writing.

Call me Will Downing the way I'm drifting around in space, dying to be reunited with the world and characters of 3 Body Problem. Unfortunately, a bit like Will's collision course, ours seems to have taken a bit of a setback too.
3 Body Problem was renewed for two more seasons back in 2024. Fans were delighted for the opportunity to get to see the next two Cixin Liu's books adapted onscreen, after a particularly wild cliffhanger was left dangling over our heads at the end of season 1: the alien race of the San Ti are on their way to Earth, and they're not exactly friendly, sending a message to humanity: "You are bugs."
Unfortunately for the audience, it seems their arrival on Earth might take some time. Despite a prompt renewal announcement Netflix did not include the show on its list of 2025 releases, leading to rumors of a 2026 release.

Clearly due to the ongoing Tony Leung hype, Netflix has now dug up this rather mediocre film from 2011, which grossed a not-so-impressive $27.2 million at the Chinese box office in the first half of 2012 – on an estimated budget of $15 million – but was at least the highest-grossing Chinese-language film at the time behind eight Hollywood blockbusters. Apart from two festival screenings, the film never made it to Europe or the USA.

The Hong Kong/Mainland co-production is so disappointing because at first glance it gives cause for optimism. Brad Pitt has been telling GQ about the last “season” of his career – and whether it involves much acting at all…
In a 2022 chat with GQ, a certain star of Deadpool 2 (2018), The Lost City (2022) and Johnny Swede (1991) suggested his acting days might be coming to an end.
“I consider myself on my last leg,” he said, to coincide with a particularly garish cover photo shoot. “This last semester or trimester. What is this section gonna be? And how do I wanna design that?”
Now, in a new interview alongside Wolfs co-star George Clooney, the actor-producer is revisiting the topic – though it sounds less finalistic than his old statements might imply.
“I meant that as seasons,” Pitt explained. “You know, there was moving out from the safety of the Ozarks. You embark on this thing and it’s all about discovery and it’s really exciting and interesting and painful...

Multiple adaptations exist for Liu Cixin's novel trilogy, with the Netflix series standing out with visually striking and immersive storytelling. The Chinese TV adaptation, Three-Body, is a faithful representation, but lacks the immersion of the Netflix series. An upcoming feature film directed by Zhang Yimou might lead to a global film trilogy competition with Netflix's acclaimed 3 Body Problem series.
Netflix's 3 Body Problem is far from the only adaptation of Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy. In fact, there are a total of five TV series and film adaptations and likely more on the way. The Three-Body Problem, the first in Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy, was released in 2008 in China, followed by an English-language publication in 2014. The novel eventually won a Hugo Award for Best Novel, cementing its place in the literary science-fiction canon.

The new Netflix series 3 Body Problem is continuing to tell the story of its first season through some “additional episodes” that the streamer has ordered, which will seemingly segue into new seasons as the show has been renewed for two more. The 3 Body Problem was the title of the first novel in Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy. The second novel was titled The Dark Forest and the third was Death’s End. The first season of 3 Body Problem did pull in a sizeable audience, but the show wasn’t exactly the massive hit Netflix was hoping it would be, especially when you factor in the price tag of over $20 million per episode.

While numerous leading women representing scientists, technicians, engineers and mathematicians (Stem) have graced the screen throughout cinematic history, those pale in comparison to their male counterparts. Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” challenged this gender disparity and came out on top, dominating the charts for weeks.
According to Luminate, “3 Body Problem” has more than 3 billion minutes watched since its March release and spent seven weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10. While the show features successful women in Stem, it’s worth noting Liu Cixin’s book, “The Three-Body Problem,” did not originally include strong female scientists like Jin Cheng (Jess Hong) and Auggie Salazar (Eiza González). The book centers on a male protagonist, Wang Miao.
Thankfully, the TV show adaptation chose to diversify its storyline by featuring female characters in Stem roles, moving away from a predominantly male-centric narrative. In the series, the Oxford Five crew replaced Miao’s character,...

“Will operates from a place of such immense love and clarity, which I think is often common with people who are dealing with facing their own mortality,” reveals “3 Body Problem” star Alex Sharp. For our recent webchat about portraying Will Downing, a brilliant scientist diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, Sharp recounts a day on set when “there was a line that was ended up being cut. In the bar scene at the beginning of the season, where Jack makes a comment to Will about something to do with him giving up and just being a teacher, Will responds, ‘don’t you think there’s something really noble about dedicating your life to the future?'” he recalls, adding, “that’s just Will. Then you put that person in the position of being terminally ill and it’s like almost a microcosm or metaphor for what humanity is dealing with.

There is a large audience for science fiction in China. But until recently, the spectacular, big-budget sci-fi movies have largely been American. Chinese sci-fi fans hoped that the international success of Liu Cixin, who wrote the trilogy of books that Netflix' 3-Body Problem is based on, would naturally lead to China's first sci-fi blockbuster. However, the first try at this, an adaptation of Three Body Problem, filmed in 2015, was never released, with many (including Liu himself) explaining that it was because the VFX industry in China wasn't yet robust enough to carry the film across the finish line. However, in 2019, The Wandering Earth, based on a lesser-known short story by Liu, blew up the Chinese box office, becoming (at the time) the second-highest grossing film in the country's history and marked what some call "year one of Chinese science fiction." While the adaptation, directed by Frant Gwo, makes drastic changes to the source material,...

“It is something that haunts all production designers; it’s something that requires a lot of hard work,” admits four-time Emmy-winning production designer Deborah Riley (“Game of Thrones”) about striving for authenticity and realism, ensuring the look and feel of a series never comes across as too staged or artificial. “It’s layers and layers and layers, and oftentimes it comes down to [for example] a set painter, who will just touch all of those props and touch up all of the walls, and just make sure they feel a little bit lived-in. You know, a bit of a layer of dust over everything helps,” Riley laughs during our recent webchat, adding that, “you’ve got to look at everything and squint slightly and add yourself. You never want anything to feel or look like a prop or dressing. It’s got to feel like someone to put it there for a reason.

2024 will bring a wave of novel adaptations to screens, with Netflix leading the charge in creating new movies and series from bestselling books. From Harlan Coben's "Fool Me Once" to Scott Westerfeld's "Uglies," 2024 will see a variety of novels making their way to theaters and streaming platforms. Novel adaptations like "The Expatriates" and "The Three-Body Problem" have garnered positive reviews for their creative storytelling and engaging performances.

Game of Thrones produced one of the most controversial series finales in television history, and, thankfully, creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have seemingly learned from their previous mistakes while working on their Netflix sci-fi show. The HBO fantasy drama is an adaptation of George R. R. Martin's popular book series, A Song of Fire and Ice, and it premiered in 2011. Game of Thrones was immediately a hit, receiving widespread critical acclaim and record-breaking viewership numbers. However, by the time the final season came around, the show was far from the spectacle it was at the beginning of its run.

Given the massive amount of resources that Netflix committed to "3 Body Problem" (not to mention the lengthy stay at the top of Netflix's Top 10 lists since its debut), it was likely only a matter of time before the streaming giant made the obvious official. That's finally happened, and now fans of one of the nerdiest, densest, and most existential sci-fi book series ever written can look forward to showrunners and co-creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo's take on what's widely considered to be the best book of the alien-invasion trilogy.
Season 2 of "3 Body Problem" is now confirmed to be in the works, as Netflix announced in a social media post on Twitter (only literal extraterrestrials would ever call it "X") earlier this afternoon. “Storytelling, and the words that they put in their actors’ mouths. They’re just glorious,” declares Liam Cunningham when giving high praise to the creators of Netflix’s hit sci-fi drama “3 Body Problem.” The series was created by multiple Emmy-winning “Game of Thrones” duo David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, who serve as co-creators and producers with writer/producer Alexander Woo (“True Blood”). For our recent webchat, Cunningham (who worked with Benioff and Weiss as Ser Davos Seaworth on “Game of Thrones”) adds, “it’s just wonderful! They aim so high with difficult storytelling that most normal people wouldn’t attempt to go near.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Season 2 of 3 Body Problem needs to address its poor CGI despite a high budget to maintain its world-building and suspense. CGI challenges are expected due to the show's unique visuals and complex narrative scale, putting pressure on VFX artists for improvement. Fixing CGI in season 2 will be crucial for 3 Body Problem's success as it faces higher stakes and the need to save humanity.
3 Body Problem had an impressive budget to work with, but season 2 of the Netflix show must clean up one area using that money. Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (Game of Thrones) in collaboration with Alexander Woo, this Netflix series is an adaptation of Liu Cixins acclaimed trilogy, Remembrance of Earth's Past. The 8-episode first season predominantly draws from the first book, The Three-Body Problem. Netflix's adaptation opens with a gripping sequence during China's Cultural Revolution that sows the seeds for the catastrophe that follows.

Spoilers are ahead for 3 Body Problem season 1.
Saul's role as a Wallfacer is crucial to thwarting the Trisolaran invasion and the San-Ti's technological advantage is a major threat. Saul's strategic thinking, openness to new ideas, and avoidance of the VR game make him an ideal Wallfacer candidate. Dr. Wenjie's cryptic clues to Saul about the Dark Forest theory and Fermi Paradox may save humanity from the San-Ti threat in season 2.
Although the Oxford Five are introduced in the first episode of 3 Body Problem, the way many of their fates are tied to the looming San-Ti threat doesn't become apparent until much later, especially where Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo) is concerned. Netflix announced that it had acquired the rights to adapt Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past sci-fi trilogy better known by the name of its first book, The Three-Body Problem back in 2020. Fans of the books, which tell the centuries-long saga of Earth's conflict with a technologically superior race of aliens, eagerly awaited the Netflix adaptation, titled 3 Body Problem, to be produced by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (Game of Thrones) along with Alexander Woo (The Terror). But before the series released in March, Netflix was beaten to the punch by a Chinese TV adaptation, produced by Tencent Media. This isn't surprising, as the books were first published in China in 2008, where they were hugely popular, and not translated into English until 2014. However, the journey of Liu's hard sci-fi epic from page to screen was even more complex than most realize. Before either series was produced,...

From a certain point of view, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare star Eiza González may have just played the original real-life Bond girl.
Ungentlemanly Warfare, the first of González’s three Guy Ritchie movies to hit theaters, is loosely based on the recently declassified Operation Postmaster, chronicling Winston Churchill’s Special Operations Executive (Soe) and their covert mission to neutralize Nazi Germany’s U-boats during World War II. The efforts of these unauthorized commandos and spies helped change the course of the war, allowing the United States to then join the European Theater of Operations in 1942.
In the action-thriller, González plays Marjorie Stewart, a talented soldier-spy who’s equally gifted as a performer. Together with Babs Olusanmokun’s Heron, Stewart set up shop at the Nazi-frequented island of Fernando Po, where they communicated the Nazis’ latest comings and goings to their fellow Soe personnel, including a group of commandos that...

Whether they're TV shows or movies, one thing fans are always curious about with book adaptations is how the source material will be altered. It doesn't matter if it's comics or novels, changes are usually made. Genre doesn't matter, as seen with Netflix tweaking the One Day television series from the original novel by David Nicholls.

Emilia Clarke’s arc in Game of Thrones has been a subject of both fury and annoyance over the years — and for good reason. Be it her manipulative benevolence, or little by little transformation into the Mad Queen, or her full-blown turn to tyranny — Danaerys Targaryen’s journey has been a rollercoaster ride and her character remains an enigma whose first moment is as memorable as her last, and every second in between is just as remarkably imprinted on the audience’s memory.

It is one such moment that had Emilia Clarke breathing a sigh of relief while filming a particularly seductive scene on the show.

As an adaptation of Cixin Liu's landmark sci-fi trilogy, The Three-Body Problem, it's only natural that the creative minds behind Netflix's 3 Body Problem would make several alterations. When all eight episodes of the series dropped on the infamous streaming service, longtime fans of the novels were taken aback by how much showrunners David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo altered the source material.
As ambitious as the original series of novels were, the changes made to 3 Body Problem were necessary to translate the series' weighty ideas and heady concepts to the small screen. With each episode clocking in at a reported $20 million, this was one of Netflix's most expensive series to date, and somehow, despite that pressure, the series still delivered a crowd-pleasing adaptation of what had previously been believed to be unfilmable.
