Netflix's epic sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem, is "nonsense" in terms of scientific plausibility, according to a scientist. Given how science fiction shows never promise to be scientifically accurate, this criticism should not be surprising. However, it still underscores how far the Netflix sci-fi TV show and its source material expect audiences to stretch their suspension of disbelief.

Dr. Paul Sutter, who is a cosmologist and astrophysicist, reacted (via Insider) to two scenes from Netflix's 3 Body Problem. After initially explaining the real meaning of the three-body problem and appreciating the show's use of the term "syzygy," he delved deep into how the series' depiction of syzygies creating strong gravitational pulls is a little too extreme.

Chinese historical drama Dead to Rights will get a North American release via Canada-based Niu Vision Media and U.S.-based Echelon Studios.

Directed by Shen Ao (No More Bets), the film will open theatrically in the U.S. and Canada on August 15, ahead of a planned streaming rollout later this year.

Dead to Rights has also secured theatrical releases via Niu Vision Media in Australia and New Zealand, where the film will arrive in theaters on August 7.

Niu Vision Media said that the film has grossed 531M Chinese yuan (nearly $74M) so far, since the film’s July 25 release in China. The distributor estimated that Dead to Rights is headed toward a $450M box office run domestically.

The film is set around the events of the Nanjing Massacre in 1937, where a postman named A Chang pretends to be a photo developer in a photo studio, developing photos for the Japanese army.

Often referred to by Chinese literary critics as the most influential piece of science fiction of the last two decades, Liu Cixin‘s “The Three-Body Problem” – known simply as “Three Body” within national borders – finally got its comic book adaptation after spanning across multiple media. The final result, while unpleasantly drab and standardized in its visual approach to the subject, does justice to the original thanks to its compelling writing.

Call me Will Downing the way I'm drifting around in space, dying to be reunited with the world and characters of 3 Body Problem. Unfortunately, a bit like Will's collision course, ours seems to have taken a bit of a setback too.

3 Body Problem was renewed for two more seasons back in 2024. Fans were delighted for the opportunity to get to see the next two Cixin Liu's books adapted onscreen, after a particularly wild cliffhanger was left dangling over our heads at the end of season 1: the alien race of the San Ti are on their way to Earth, and they're not exactly friendly, sending a message to humanity: "You are bugs."

Unfortunately for the audience, it seems their arrival on Earth might take some time. Despite a prompt renewal announcement Netflix did not include the show on its list of 2025 releases, leading to rumors of a 2026 release.

Clearly due to the ongoing Tony Leung hype, Netflix has now dug up this rather mediocre film from 2011, which grossed a not-so-impressive $27.2 million at the Chinese box office in the first half of 2012 – on an estimated budget of $15 million – but was at least the highest-grossing Chinese-language film at the time behind eight Hollywood blockbusters. Zhang Yimou, arguably China’s most revered living filmmaker, is set to direct a Chinese-language feature film based on the novel, it was revealed Sunday during a forum at the Shanghai International Film festival.

In Shanghai, Wang Changtian, chairman of leading local studio Beijing Enlight Media, said his company was in the early stages of developing the project, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported. Per The Hollywood Reporter, 3 Body Problem has ranked in the No.1 spot among streaming titles for the second week in a row, according to Nielsen's reporting numbers. Better yet is that its second week saw an increase in viewership, suggesting a continued growth in popularity. For the week of March 25-31, 3 Body Problem garnered 1.79 billion minutes of viewing, a rise of 30% compared to the previous week. That makes the series the No. 1 show overall on streaming, surpassing The Resident --- available on both Hulu and Netflix --- which had 1.48 billion minutes viewed.

As an adaptation of Cixin Liu's landmark sci-fi trilogy, The Three-Body Problem, it's only natural that the creative minds behind Netflix's 3 Body Problem would make several alterations. When all eight episodes of the series dropped on the infamous streaming service, longtime fans of the novels were taken aback by how much showrunners David Benioff, D.B.
