The new year is always a hectic time for the second year students of St. John's Central College's Advanced T.V. and Film Production course, and the people of Cork will be familiar with seeing scores of film students around the city in the months of February and March, camera and other film related equipment in hand, as they go about completing their fifteen minute short film course requirement. As a graduate of this very course, I look back at this time fondly, but do not envy this years students, because as rewarding as they can be, they can be darn head wrecking too! But this year, they are asking for your help, with four ambitious shorts, from a contemporary comedy to a sci-fi love story (with a western and dark fairy tale in between ), on this years slate. With the college providing the equipment, a lot more is needed...

The New Year has just set in and while most of us are still busy ushering it, the Indian King of Pop Daler Mehndi has given us yet another reason to cheer. The renowned singer/musician has just released a teaser for his latest single Dilruba. This peppy number is Daler’s first single to be released in 2015.
Dilruba came as a concept to Paaji when he was in a full swing one afternoon in his studio with his team. He conceived the idea, wrote the lyrics spontaneously and composed the song the same time. In order to gauge the audiences reaction, he went to a renowned nightclub and had the number played live. Much to everyone’s delight, the audience and the DJ himself present at the occasion grooved and danced along when their favorite singer was played. The energy of the song is a metaphor of the singer’s energy,...

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, January 6, 2015. The new year is off to a good start for CBS as, for the second straight night, the network's various procedurals neared or cleared season highs, led by the most watched "NCIS" since last February. "NCIS" and "NCIS: Los Angeles" had no trouble thumping ABC's two-hour "Marvel's Agent Carter" in all measures. While ABC will happily note that "Agent Carter" outdrew "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." throughout, the 1940s-set drama suffered a dwindling audience at each half-hour. Elsewhere, a good premiere for "MasterChef Junior" pushed "New Girl" to a solid performance, though "The Mindy Project" took a big fall from its lead-in. On to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, CBS averaged a 2.3 rating for Tuesday night, easily winning the key demographic. ABC was second with a 1.6 key demo rating, followed closely by NBC's 1.1 key demo rating. The CW averaged a 0.4 key demo rating for the night.

Principal photography wrapped before the holidays, but more secrets keep spilling out of Jj Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The new year brings word that martial artist Iko Uwais, who kicked and sliced his way through Gareth Evans’ Indonesian action hits The Raid and The Raid 2, will appear in Star Wars alongside fellow Raid 2 performers Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman.
The three join John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford in The Force Awakens, which is set for a December 18 opening.
Uwais broke out on the international action scene in 2011’s The Raid as a Jakarta cop who fights his way out of a tenement filled with knife- and gun-wielding thugs using the bone-crunching martial art of pencak silat. He reprised the role in last year’s critically acclaimed sequel alongside Ruhian,...

While the calendar year may have changed, the box office looks remarkably similar, as the first champion of the 2015 weekend was the same one who won the last weekend of 2014. The third installment of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, came away the victor in a week that saw most of the top ten filled with old releases. The weekend total of $21.9 million was a noticeable drop in the film’s revenue, and was a noticeably smaller gap this time around, with Into The Woods taking the second spot with $19 million. The Rob Marshall helmed adaptation of the Sondheim musical rose up the charts, switching places with the Angelina Jolie directed biopic Unbroken, which took third place with $18.3 million.

2Nd Update: Last night, Deadline broke news that a Tweet generated under the Warner Bros Digital banner slammed rival Oscar pic Foxcatcher. Initially, Warner Bros disavowed the Tweet as an imposter, which seemed a bit hard to swallow. Now, the studio has gone the extra mile and gotten to the truth. The Twitter thread was generated through a promotional account by a consultant. Warner Bros Pictures brass, a pretty classy bunch who’ve been embarrassed by all this, has sacked the person behind the Tweet that amplified press reports that Mark Schultz (played in the film by Channing Tatum) has disavowed the movie in his own Twitter and Facebook salvos. Here is the updated statement by Warner Bros: “Earlier today we received a media inquiry about a Twitter post sent under the

If you are still hungover, you have my sympathies. If you have never been hungover, you get an evolving mixture of envy and pity. No matter. The new year is upon us.
This is the time of year when some of us, nagged by memories of elementary school homework assignments, make resolutions to improve ourselves in the year ahead. In general, my resolutions involve drinking more water and tossing more cat-toys (Selina likes to play “fetch”), but one change I made last year was awesome and I’d like to recommend it to you.
Every week, when I go for my weekly comics fix, I try to find at least one new book to try. I don’t manage to do it every week, but I bet I sampled 40 new titles last year. Some I didn’t like, but spending 15 or 20 minutes reading something different is not a horrible fate.

The coming year promises to bring further consolidation in the European TV biz as deep-pocketed telcos like Spain’s Telefonica entrench themselves further in content provision and quadplay services. There are potential acquisition plays from such giants as Vodafone and BT, while sports rights remain a key bone to be fought over, impacting the business in different ways. The new year also offers the prospect of some power plays from two of Europe’s heaviest hitters in Rupert Murdoch’s Sky Europe and French conglomerate Vivendi.
What Murdoch plans to do next, following the creation this year of Sky Europe — which merged his UK, Italian and German pay-tv operations — is likely to have a seismic impact on the European and international TV landscape. Rumors have been rife that Murdoch, who has stayed one step ahead of his competitors for the majority of his career, plans to divest his 39% stake in...

The new year is almost here and that means it's time for one of Netflix's ceremonial killing sprees. The streaming service is taking out its big, streamy chainsaw and dicing up some of your favorite films. Come January 1, these classics will be gone. De-Netflixed. De-available from The Big Red Website. So snatch them up and at least pretend to watch them so that you don't look dumb when a bow-tied homosexual approaches you at a New Year's party with his quips about "Kramer Vs. Kramer." He needs validation and your genuine, informed laughter will appease him. Here are the 11 most important titles to stream before 2015. "Titanic" Kate Winslet at her most Alex Kingston. Leonardo DiCaprio at his most Jodie-Foster-at-age-14. Iceberg at its most January Jones. "12 Angry Men" Though Henry Fonda is a towering film icon, it is shocking how almost none of his films are discussed anymore. Maybe "The Grapes of Wrath...

The new year is a glorious time to start fresh and improve upon the things you let fall by the wayside in the previous months. Take any of these simple resolutions and get to work! 1. Go back to basics and get in an acting class. Clear your head of all the audition noise and remind yourself why you love the art by getting some solid scene work done. 2. Become comfortable with your type. Wouldn’t it be great if we were all devastatingly good looking? Well, we’re not (Ok, some of you are, but you know what I mean) The sooner you are Ok with your type, the sooner you can start selling it effectively and book more work. Besides, even as an average looking actor, you are still better looking than 95% of the people you went to high school with. 3. Start writing a project for yourself. A play,...

The new year means it’s time for WWE to come up with some different storylines because fans are sick and tired of the same old stuff. With the Royal Rumble looming on January 25, WWE must be thinking ahead to not just the Rumble and WrestleMania, but beyond that as well.
A big problem with WWE this year is that they have done a poor job of long term booking. Lucky for them, I’ve got plenty of ideas about some feuds that they can do in 2015.
For the sake of this feature, all performers will only be mentioned once. It would be easy to just come up with scenarios for the best performers only without thinking of others, but there are a lot of talented people in WWE that deserve the chance to shine in their own feuds.
This is not a card for one show like a WrestleMania.

There's a lot of reality TV ahead in 2015: more than 70 new and returning reality shows debut in January alone. Here's a guide to some of the highlights and lowlights, and trends that I've spotted among all the reality TV networks are flinging our way. Twists and changes come to the big shows "The Amazing Race" (CBS, Feb. 25) will, for the first time, bail on the one thing that made it different: casting people with preexisting relationships. While all 11 teams are dating couples, including a former New Kid on the Block and his boyfriend, five of the 11 teams will meet for the first time at the race's starting line. It seems like a desperate attempt to create even more drama, but it may also be interesting to see how well strangers function as a team during a race around the world. "Survivor Worlds Apart" (CBS, Feb. 25) isn't celebrating its 30th season with an all-star season,...

Tracers showcases a dynamic athletic performance from Taylor Lautner, who is seen doing many of his own stunts. This is mixed with both the beauty and street-smart toughness of Marie Avgeropoulos, delivering an action-packed fast-paced ride that literally jumps across the screen. The adventure also offers Taylor Lautner a chance to showcase his own unique style of parkour.
After he crashes his bike into a super-sexy stranger named Nikki (Avgeropoulos), Cam (Lautner) is introduced to her crew, a team that uses parkour to pull off heists. Hoping to alleviate his deepening debt to a violent crime gang,...

It’s that time of year again. The new year of University is about to kick off. Which means hundreds of ‘young adults’ are getting ready for the craziest, most exciting, hard working years of their lives so far.
If you’ve been to Uni and have waved the freshers year good bye you will notice a few home truths about your first year as a student. If you’re just about to start Uni then here’s a way to notice you’re not the only newbie in town.
The first year of University can be a daunting time – away from home, having to do your own washing, cooking, cleaning, ironing, you name it, it’s down to you to do it. But you’re not alone. Everyone else starting Uni for the first time is in the same boat. Try helping each other out.
Embrace it.

She’s a brilliant businesswoman in addition to her drop-dead gorgeousness, and Jessica Simpson put the two together for her new ad campaign.
The “Fashion Star” babe looks amazing in her 2014 Jessica Simpson Collection bathing suit shots, proving that a little hard work and some help from Weight Watchers is all it took to shed her baby weight.
Simpson shared, “It was so much fun. I’m very proud of what we’ve built, so to have everyone together on set surrounded by all of our clothes made for a great day. I love the new swimwear we have coming out.”
Of the strapless white bathing suit she modeled, Jessica gushed, “This swimsuit is feminine and a little retro in its detailing. It’s very sexy, but it still leaves something to the imagination. And the shape is incredibly flattering.”
“This season we brought a feminine take to the current trend toward casual.

The new year has its first potential subtitled success with the strong opening of Chile Oscar submission "Gloria" (Roadside Attractions), which surprisingly did not make the Foreign Language shortlist. Opening with a slightly higher per screen average than "No," Chile's nominee last year (which starred Gael Garcia Bernal), "Gloria" benefited from strong reviews and interest in new films as multiple longer-running films continue to linger in theaters. Two other limited films, "Stranger by the Lake" (Strand) and "Visitors" (Cinedigm) also showed some initial spark that could translate into further interest as they expand. Otherwise, most specialized audiences continued to patronize the numerous Oscar contenders playing in multi-hundred screen breaks. Opening "Gloria" (Roadside Attractions) - Criticwire: A-; Cinemascore: 85; Festivals include Berlin 2013, Telluride 2013, Toronto 2013, New York 2013, AFI 2013 $58,800 in 3 theaters; PSA (per screen average): $19,800 This is the best...

The new year has barely started, yet I already have a candidate for the eventual list of 2014′s most influential media execs: Mlb Advanced Media CEO Bob Bowman. His sports-focused streaming video and Internet operation is poised to become an entertainment power following the announcements at International CES this month that it will drive two potentially ground-breaking new services. On February 24, WWE will launch a subscription-based online video channel, WWE Network, that will include live and on-demand library programming. (Bowman sat on the WWE board from 2003-2008.) And Sony turned heads with its plan to introduce a Web-based pay TV service that will include live programming from channels that are only available now to subscribers of traditional cable, satellite, and telco video services. Mlbam’s state-of-the-art infrastructure already handles live and on-demand streaming for college basketball’s March Madness, CBS Sports, and ESPN3, as well as Glenn Beck’s TheBlaze...

Stoked to make a big change to her appearance, Tamera Mowry-Housley showed off her adorable curly hairdo on Monday (January 13).
Preparing for the big reveal, the "Sister, Sister" star tweeted, "This is happening right now. Thanks @ShaiAmiel for my beautiful cut. Can't wait to show y'all," accompanied by a photo of a pile of hair on the floor.
Later, the 35-year-old actress snapped a selfie of the short style with the caption, "Love my big chop...love my curl doctor @shaiamiel You did it again."
The new year is bringing a lot of changes for Tamera, as she also changed management companies to CAA.

The new year has hit and the release of Dark Souls II is looming ever closer. The BBC is reportedly pressuring the producers of its hit drama series "Sherlock" to fast-track at least one new episode to be back on television in time for Christmas this year.
Despite a two year delay between the second and third series, the show is more popular than ever. The New Year's Day third series premiere episode attracted over 13 million viewers in the UK when catch-up services are factored in.
More than 10 million people are said to have tuned in to this past Sunday night's series three finale which ended with a cliffhanger. This series has also broken the record for the highest "post-broadcast" UK viewing figures of all time (as in most watched series on a catchup service).
Understandably the BBC is eager to have "Sherlock" as the main event in its Christmas 2014 schedule, especially with rival broadcaster ITV proving such strong competition during the festive season.

Michael Douglas: film legend, Oscar winner, superhero? According to Variety, the actor has officially signed on to play scientist Hank Pym in Ant-Man, an upcoming movie based on the Marvel comic franchise.
10 Things You Didn't Know About Marvel Comics
In the comics, Pym became the original Ant-Man after creating the story's shape-shifting chemical, which allowed him to shrink down to the size of an ant. He then passed the torch to Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) after retiring. It's unclear exactly how Douglas and Rudd will share the Ant-Man handle in the film.
