The news of the death of the last Ussr leader Mikhail Gorbachev on Tuesday got little attention outside of the former Soviet Bloc. Thirty-three years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the world has moved on. But for a generation of us growing up behind the Iron Curtain, he changed the course of our lives and allowed us to pursue careers we never thought possible.
When you type Gorbachev’s name into Google, the search engine’s top suggestion is “Gorbachev Pizza Hut,” a reference to the famous 1998 TV commercial featuring the politician who became the first and only President of the Soviet Union.
In it, he and a little girl walk into a restaurant and share a pizza. As older and younger patrons recognize him, they begin to debate in Russian, with an older man arguing that because of Gorbachev, there is economic turmoil and political instability, and...

Welcome to an April that’s sure to be unlike any other. Usually this time of year means getting outdoors in the nice weather or catching a baseball game or two. Obviously 2020 had different plans for us all. Now Amazon Prime has unveiled its new releases for April 2020 to give us an idea of what indoor entertainment options we have.
April 2020 is pretty thin on original series for Amazon Prime. Thankfully two of the few launches are big ones. Sci-fi anthology series Tales from the Loop launches on April 3 and looks to be quite bingeable. Amazon Prime is no stranger to sci-fi anthologies thanks to Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams but this one seems to kick it up a notch. Arriving on April 17 is the sixth season of Bosch as well.

Forest Whitaker and Rachel McAdams are being eyed to star in the boxing drama Southpaw, which Jake Gyllenhaal has been attached to since November.
The story, written by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, follows a boxer who wins the welterweight title, but soon thereafter, his life is shattered due to a tragedy, forcing him to get back on the right track to earn his young daughter's respect. Forest Whitaker is in talks to play the boxing trainer who helps this fighter mount a comeback, with Rachel McAdams being offered the female lead by The Weinstein Company.
Deadline also reports that Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave) is being courted to play a social worker, looking out for the best interests of the boxer's young daughter.
Antoine Fuqua is directing, bringing on Richard Wenk to rewrite the script. Alan Riche and Peter Riche are producing alongside Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal.

Expanding to even more theaters, as should be expected during the second week of release, will probably dilute earnings...

Repentance is not your typical revenge film. Anthony Mackie and Mike Epps play Tommy and Ben, brothers whose lives take very different directions after a car accident nearly kills both of them. Tommy becomes a self-help guru and best-selling author, while Ben is in and out of jail and deeply in debt to some unsavory characters. To help his brother and make some fast cash, Tommy agrees to take on a private client, Angel (played by Forest Whitaker), who is having a hard time getting over the sudden death of his mother.
The film, directed by Philippe Caland, is a loose “remake” of Caland’s own film, The Guru & the Gypsy. Whitaker, who starred in Caland’s The Ripple Effect, describes it as a “re-envisioning” of that early film. “It deals with karma and people’s subconscious.” But he also believes that there is a touch of the supernatural in Repentance.

After three weeks of Lego dominance, first place will go to a new movie this weekend. Liam Neeson action flick Non-Stop has received the broader marketing push, though Son of God has been generating the type of presales that suggest it could be a breakout hit with underserved Christian moviegoers. At 3,090 locations, Non-Stop reteams Neeson with Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra. Since Taken became a surprise hit in 2009, it feels like Neeson has been everywhere; however, the only movies since then that have been sold primarily on Neeson's appeal are Unknown and The Grey. Those opened to $21.9 million and $19.7 million, respectively, and distributor Universal is expecting a similar result for Non-Stop this weekend. There are reasons to think that Non-Stop could open a bit higher than those movies. Marketing has smartly highlighted the movie's intriguing, appealing set-up: can Neeson's beleaguered air marshall solve a whodunit before more airline passengers die? It...

This weekend is a box office wild card.
Liam Neeson is an earnings force unto himself, and his latest turn as an air marshal on a hijacked transatlantic flight in Non-Stop should evict The Lego Movie from its three-weekend stronghold on the No. 1 spot. But the big, looming unknown is Mark Burnett and Roma Downey’s Son of God. Its weekend prospects have analysts stumped, with estimates ranging anywhere from $12 million to $30 million. And even the high end of that could be wildly off.
With that said, here’s how things might play out. And, to change things up a bit,...

This weekend, Liam Neeson attempts to save his fellow passengers from a hijacked plane in "Non-Stop," the life story of Jesus comes to the big screen in "Son of God," and many more new releases make their way to select theaters.
"Non-Stop" stars Liam Neeson as an air marshal caught in a game of cat-and-mouse with a hijacker during a transatlantic flight. After receiving threatening text messages, the marshal springs into action to find the person responsible for holding the passengers hostage 10,000 feet in the air. Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong'o ("12 Years a Slave"), and Michelle Dockery ("Downtown Abbey") star in supporting roles.
From the makers of hit "The Bible" mini-series comes the inspirational "Son of God." The biblical film brings the biographical story of Jesus, from his humble birth through his teachings, crucifixion, and ultimate resurrection, to the big screen.

Mike Epps is a comedian at heart and one of the funniest comic actors to emerge into the Hollywood scene, but in his latest film, Repentance, he undertakes a serious role as Ben, the loyal brother of Tommy Carter (Anthony Mackie), a spiritual therapist whose successful book attracts the attention of a profoundly disturbed man (Forest Whitaker). Opening in select theaters on February 28th, the horror-thriller directed by Philippe Caland also stars Sanaa Lathan, Nicole Ari Parker, and Ariana Neal. I recently landed an exclusive interview with Epps who talked about how the project came together, what drew him to the role, why the spiritual undertone of the film appealed to him, the easy directing process with Caland, how he stepped up his acting game opposite Mackie, what it was like shooting on location in New Orleans, and how he escapes boredom by pursuing a multi-faceted career. He also discussed his upcoming live comedy show,...

Forest Whitaker plays a profoundly troubled man struggling to hold onto his sanity and do the right thing in director Philippe Caland’s intriguing horror-thriller, Repentance. Years after a drunken car crash that almost took his life, Tommy Carter (Anthony Mackie) has reinvented himself as a therapist and spiritual advisor. His successful book release draws the attention of Angel Sanchez (Whitaker) who convinces Carter to take him on as a personal client. Opening February 28th, the film also stars Mike Epps, Sanaa Lathan, Nicole Ari Parker and Ariana Neal. We recently landed an exclusive interview with Whitaker who revealed how the project grew out of a small film Caland had previously made, what it was like acting opposite Mackie in some very intense scenes, why he loves shooting on location in New Orleans, what he looks for in a project, how he stays true to his acting roots, why it...

In this exclusive clip from Repentance, Forest Whitaker shows Anthony Mackie why he should never reject the kind offer of a drink. Repentance, directed by Philippe Caland, opens in theaters February 28th.
Official synopsis: Years after a drunken car crash that almost took his life, Thomas Carter (Anthony Mackie) has reinvented himself as a therapist/spiritual advisor who advocates a synthesis of world religions and positivity. He's parlayed this vocation into a successful book release that one day draws the attention of Angel Sanchez (Forest Whitaker), a profoundly troubled man fixated on the "untimely" death of his mother. When Carter takes on Sanchez as a personal client in an effort to raise funds for his indebted brother Ben (Mike Epps), things quickly take a turn for the worse. Angel needs much more than a simple life coach.

20th Century Fox's action sequel Taken 3 is starting to take shape, with Forest Whitaker signing on to co-star and Taken 2 filmmaker Olivier Megaton confirmed to be back in the director's chair. No story details have been released as of yet, and it isn't known what character Forest Whitaker will play.
The project was first announced back in October 2012, just after Taken 2 took in $50 million during its opening weekend, en route to earning $375 million worldwide from just a $45 million production budget.. Liam Neeson signed on in June to return as former CIA agent Bryan Mills, a deal that is reportedly worth $20 million. Maggie Grace is also coming back as Bryan's daughter Kim, who was kidnapped in the original 2009 thriller Taken, which earned a surprising $225 million worldwide from just a $25 million budget. She helped rescue her father and mother (Famke Janssen) in 2012's Taken 2, when they were taken hostage in Albania.

It's always an exciting thing when big name stars are attached to genre films, and the upcoming flick Repentance is full of them. Produced by and starring Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, the thriller also stars Anthony Mackie, Mike Epps and Sanaa Lathan as four characters whose lives intersect and are forever changed as a result.
Directed by Philippe Caland, the psychological thriller centers around Mackie's Tommy Carter, a therapist and spiritual advisor who's still dealing with the trauma of an alcohol-induced car crash that nearly took his life. In an effort to raise funds to help his brother (Mike Epps), Tommy takes on a troubled man named Angel Sanchez (Whitaker) as a personal client, and soon finds that Sanchez's problems are a danger to his well-being, to say the least.

Repentance offers a golden opportunity to everyone who’s already seen Misery, but would like to see it again with Forest Whitaker instead of Kathy Bates. Sure, there may be a couple other slight alterations too. Anthony Mackie‘s writer protagonist deals in self-help books, not novels. Whitaker breaks the agreed-upon rules of “kidnapping your favorite author to magically fix all your problems” by throwing in a couple of extra kidnappings down the line (totally not cool). And there’s also a scary ghost mom that may or may not be a hallucination. But the idea’s the same: fan loves author, fan kidnaps author, fan tortures author in ways relating to author’s most popular book. Go ahead and check out the trailer below. Obviously, those who have seen Misery already know most everything going on here. But so does everyone else that’s seen the two and a half minute video above. Repentance...

The first trailer for the horror thriller Repentance has been released online. Directed by Philippe Caland, the film stars Anthony Mackie as a life coach and author who comes into contact with a troubled fan (Forest Whitaker) who dabbles in the spiritual world of Karma. The pic looks to be a solid thriller with a touch of Misery, but this trailer feels like it gives away a good deal of the story. The prospect of Whitaker and Mackie working together is certainly promising, so hopefully there are still plenty of twists and turns left unspoiled. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Directed by French/Lebanese director Philippe Caland (Boxing Helena), the psychological thriller Vipaka was the opening night film at the Pan African Film Festival in La last night. Set in New Orleans, Vipaka (a Buddhist term for Karma) has its share of thrills and twists, but unfortunately fell short of our expectations. On one hand, it was nice to see black characters in this kind of a story, and in this genre, since that doesn't happen often; but, on the other hand, the film seems content with blending in with other similar thrillers. Thomas Carter, played by Anthony Mackie, has become a renowned author of a book that recounts his near-death...
