A Horror Cult-Classic From H.P. Lovecraft Is Being "Re-Animated"
Image
One of H.P. Lovecraft's classic tales of horror is coming back to the big screen. Deadline reports that Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe are penning a modernized remake of Herbert West: Reanimator. The story was previously adapted for the screen in 1985 as Re-Animator.

Although his works are famously difficult to adapt, Lovecraft has been a source of inspiration for a number of successful horror films over the years, including Color Out of Space, Banshee Chapter, and Suitable Flesh. Simon and Metcalfe are no strangers to the horror genre; together, the two wrote the Snoop Dogg blaxploitation homage Bones and the supernatural hit The Haunting in Connecticut. Simon directed the fright flicks Brain Dead and Carnosaur, while Metcalfe penned the horror sequel Fright Night Part 2 and the Brad Pitt-David Duchovny serial killer thriller Kalifornia. The film will be produced by Woodlake Entertainment, and is planned as the...

This Free-to-Stream Hidden Horror Gem is a Terrifying Lovecraftian Masterpiece
Image
Lovecraftian horror remains the most difficult to adapt in filmic form. Think about not just the writer’s work, but the litany of homages and broader sense Lovecraftian horror works that have graced fiction in the decades since. Principally, the horror is that of the unknown. Some nebulous, unseen terror that, while effective in writing, proves incredibly challenging to actualize and visualize on a movie screen. For every Dagon and Underwater, there’s Alone in the Dark and The Barge People.

For as truly horrible as the actual writer himself was, Lovecraft’s influence on the horror genre remains unmatched, so it makes sense that burgeoning filmmakers, especially, would hope to imbue their debuts with some kind of Lovecraftian homage. Go to any bookstore anywhere – Lovecraft continues to dominate the market. Among Lovecraftian horror movies, especially low-budget offerings, might I introduce you to one of the best to ever do it?...

This 11-Year-Old Found Footage Gem Is One of Mike Flanagan’s Favorite Horror Films
Image
Mike Flanagan's decades-spanning Letterboxd list "Favorite Horror Movies" would make a great primer for new genre fans, but it also holds some hidden gems that may surprise seasoned viewers. 2013's Banshee Chapter is a startlingly effective sci-fi thriller that pushed the boundaries of found footage verite as the first movie released for the Oculus Rift. However, even fans without the groundbreaking VR rig are in for some major 2D scares in this clever, reality-warping fright fest.

Virtual reality seems like a natural next step for the found footage genre, which relies on a sense of documentary-like immersion. In addition to being shot with VR in mind, Banshee Chapter integrates historical realities like the notorious Project MKUltra, and a certain counterculture icon, to create an oddly convincing sci-fi fantasy that is every bit as frightening on the small screen as it is in the Oculus Rift.

Five Found Footage Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
When done well, found footage horror makes for one of the most immersive and unnerving viewing experiences. The inherent naturalism tends to make the horror feel more plausible and real. Found footage horror doesn’t need a huge budget or recognizable names among the cast to induce chills, either, and the lo-fi visuals only further add to the scares.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to found footage horror movies that excel with the format, delivering unsettling atmosphere and scares while making the most of their immersive, lo-fi aesthetics. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Next month’s Friday the 13th continues its streak for being one of the year’s busiest days for horror. The latest to land the coveted spot for release is Netflix‘s The Conference, and the new trailer promises a killer great time.

Five Cosmic Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
Cosmic horror operates on a specific, dread-inducing feel of human insignificance in the face of a vast, unknowable threat. Its characters slowly discover how meager their place in the universe is when faced with horrors beyond their reality. Our world is merely a tiny blip in the cosmos, after all.

Robbie Banfitch takes found footage to immersive cosmic horror highs in The Outwaters, releasing in limited theaters on February 9, 2023 from Bloody Disgusting and Cinedigm. In anticipation, this week’s streaming picks capture the unquantifiable terror of cosmic horror.

As always, here’s where you can stream them this week.

Banshee Chapter (2013)

Written by: Blair Erickson, Daniel J. Healy

Directed by: Bair Erickson

Cast: Katia Winter (Ann Roland), Ted Levine (Thomas Blackburn), Michael McMillian (James Hirsch), Jenny Gabrielle (Callie), Vivian Nesbitt (Olivia Kmiec)

“Banshee Chapter” exemplifies the phrase “Still Waters Run Deep”. The poster art lends to either some “Hellraiser” action with some skinned twisted Epicureans or it’s some sort of anatomical horror indie flick. I dunno. After writing a good many reviews by now, I always notice patterns about the things that I mention repeatedly. I realized that I’m a sucker for good poster art. That all too critical first impression that hooks you. “Banshee Chapter” ended up being nothing of what I thought it would be.

The opener shows a montage of legit footage about government mind control experiments. One in particular has been dubbed “Project MKUltra”. What singles this...

‘Banshee Chapter’ First Virtual Reality Film To Hit Oculus Rift
Ted Levine, Michael McMillian, and Katia Winter in Banshee Chapter (2013)
Facebook’s Oculus Rift is getting its first 3D virtual reality feature film in Banshee Chapter, an indie sci-fi horror executive produced by Star Trek‘s Zachary Quinto that’s hitting the next-gen virtual reality platform today – for free.

The low budget frightener, loosely based on H.P. Lovecraft’s From Beyond, tracks a journalist investigating the disappearance of her old college friend and his ties to a secret experimental drug. Silence of the Lambs‘ Ted Levine, Sleepy Hollow‘s Katia Winter and True Blood‘s Michael McMillian star for first time director Blair Erickson in the film produced by Sunchaser Entertainment’s Stephanie Riggs and Before the Door’s Corey Moosa and Sean Akers, and Christian Arnold-Beutel.

Banshee Chapter debuted last December on VOD to modest fanfare. But that was before Facebook bought Oculus Rift in a $2 billion deal, heralding it as the next big thing in social communications and entertainment.

The Road to FrightFest – Reflections on the Darkside of the Moon Part 2: Christian Arnold-Beutel
Every once in a while we writers are fortunate to discover a story of determination and passion that inspires us, and reminds us of why we wanted to write about film.

For that reason is to bring experiences and stories such as the one behind the making of Shockwave Darkside 3D to the forefront so that they don’t go untold.

What better way to hear the stories and experience than through the personal reflections of writer-director Jay Weisman and producer Christian Arnold-Beutel and their own creative war that mirrors the last great war raging on the moon in their contribution to a grand genre.

You can read Jay’s introduction here.

HeyUGuys,

Early 2010 I was approached by my U.S producing partners with a script that felt to me like a sci-fi mix of Paranormal Activity meets Saving Private Ryan set on the moon. It was a rather ambitious...

I’m back! It’s been a long time and I apologise for that, moving house turned out to be a far far longer process than I anticipated or had been led to believe. Three weeks turned into six, six weeks turned into three months and now here we are.

Aside from the length of time it takes, moving house was a real eye opener in other areas too. Specifically in terms of how I inform you week on week of all of this wonderful content available to stream and then how you have to put up with lacklustre delivery from various ISPs. I was living in someone else’s house on a connection that was not my own, not wanting to name names but there is one of the big three ISP’s in the UK which boasts about having one of, if not the, fastest broadband delivery on...

‘Banshee Chapter’ DVD Review
Stars: Katia Winder, Michael McMillian, Ted Levine | Written and Directed by Blair Erickson

The Banshee Chapter follows journalist, Anna (Winter) who is investigating the disappearance of her friend James (McMillan). James has been experimenting with strange drugs that the Us military used in real life experiments in the 1960s. These experiments had very weird and sinister results, of course, so as Anna goes about her investigation, weird and sinister things begin to happen to her too. I really liked this. It’s got quite a bit going on, including but not limited to archival footage both fictional and real, strange referencing of real life cultural figures and Lovecraftian horrors from beyond the veil. As such, it was a little unpredictable, which I liked.

Whilst we know what beats and tropes to expect from a film involving zombies or creepy children or vampires, there isn’t really an established dialogue for...

This week’s best new releases on all the Instant Watching platforms.

Spring Breakers (2013)

Harmony Korine’s critical darling from last year is likely to be talked about and discussed for a good long while yet. Holding up an uncomfortable mirror to our youth, Spring Breakers works on a lot of levels not only does it work as a surface level tale of four out of control girls on a debauched trip in Florida but it also works as a story about the spiritual death and rebirth of Generation Y and asks some important questions about how post war culture evolved into something where our youth think licking power tools in music videos is something to aspire to.

There is a scene fairly early on where the two most rebellious of our heroines sit in class discussing oral sex on paper as their tutor drones on about world war two,...

The Banshee Chapter Review
There’s nothing like a good scare to get the blood flowing, am I right horror fans? While a film’s story keeps us engaged, its ability to scare us silly is what keeps us on our toes, covered in a blanket, and clinging to the closest arm. Now, there are a few ways to go about spooking viewers – and not all work. Anybody can orchestrate a jump scare, which makes them sometimes more frustrating than enjoyable, but to string together a chain of pure, atmospherically beneficial jump scares, that’s where excitement comes into play. As a horror fan who hates cheap scares and lame tactics that undoubtedly jolt viewers anyway, I’ve got to hand it to first time writer/director Blair Erickson on his first feature The Banshee Chapter, a supernatural thriller that almost gave me a damn heart attack.

After the disappearance of fellow journalist/close...

Film4 Frightfest 2013 in Review – Part 3
Monday

The fifth and final day of Frightfest mercifully began a little later than the preceding days, a boon to many now slightly flagging and delirious film fans. Unfortunately, the first film on the main screen was the single worst feature I caught at the festival. Dark Touch (Marina De Van) features a French crew and an Irish cast and one wonders if something drastic was lost in translation. She goes to live with family friends but the mysterious occurrences start to happen again.

It’s apparently a film about child abuse but it misjudges its take on this very difficult subject so badly, it’s borderline offensive. It’s also just stupid. If I were...

‘The Banshee Chapter’ Review
Stars: Katia Winder, Michael McMillian, Ted Levine | Written and Directed by Blair Erickson

Much like the recently reviewed The Dyatlov Pass Incident, The Banshee Chapter (though the title is just Banshee Chapter on screen)is a blend of fact and fiction – this time based on real documents, actual test subject testimony and uncovered secrets about covert programs run by the CIA such as the much-publicised Mk Ultra program – which was seemingly the cause for 50% of the events that occurred in The X-Files!

So, the first thing that hits you about Banshee Chapter is its pedigree. Featuring stars from both HBO and Showtime series’ and produced by Zachary Quinto and the folks behind the Kevin Spacey film Margin Call, the films centres on journalist Anne Roland (Winter) who follows the mysterious trail of a missing friend (McMillian) that had been experimenting with mind-altering chemicals developed in secret government drug tests. Levine...
