ALRIGHT, I SAY ALRIGHT

If you're not caught up on my lore, I have an unhealthy Green Lantern fixation on these characters. There'll be spoilers but I don't think anyone cares anymore.

What better way to start the movie than by killing off the entire corps, every guardian, and blowing up their planet. I remember seeing people on twitter complain so much how one of the guys in charge of this movie admitted he's only read a single John Stewart comic but I can't even blame him since everyone decided his personality consists of being a veteran and nothing else after the Justice League cartoons. John's a character defined by loss and they featured this in the worst way possible by emphasizing his military background; while the death of his wife and the destruction of Xanshi were events he couldn't stop, he willfully joined the military in a country people didn't even want him in. His architect background's not even mentioned even though it's a reason he was personally chosen by the guardians and no one else just like in the movie, in trying to fulfill the master builder prophecy and make a mortal guardian.

Instead they gave him Kyle Rayner's origin, added in Green Arrow for fan service (Hard-Traveling Heroes is a very good comic with Hal and Ollie), and kept emphasizing Hal was the greatest almost as a way to soften fan reaction when he gets killed at the end (and overpowered too for some reason by someone who had the ring for a few days). I guarantee you that stupid Rann-Thanagar war plot was only included so they could awkwardly tease him and Hawkgirl at the end despite them having no chemistry for the sake of the JL cartoons again. Adam Strange was altered a lot for the plot and every character to do with him became a plot device that got killed off when they fulfilled their purpose. They specified Adam's wife was dead but that his daughter was only missing but then they killed him off so the poor girl isn't getting found.

Parallax being included at all was always going to be controversial but I mostly hate how Sinestro became a mustache-twirling villain again. The 2000s comics were basically dedicated to fleshing out these two and now it's further cemented in people's minds that they're two-dimensional. What was the point of including Sinestro Corps members if they aren't using rings at all and why did they have to kill all of them?

It's a okay watch but the more I think about it the less it gets characters right. If you're into cookie-cutter superhero movies, you're probably in the right spot.

This Is Not The John Stewart I Was Looking For.

Greetings And Salutations, and welcome to my review of Green Lantern - Beware My Power; here's the breakdown of my ratings:

Story: 1.50 Direction: 1.50 Pace: 1.50 Acting: 1.00 Enjoyment: 1.25

TOTAL: 6.75 out of 10.00

DC Comics have made some errors in their progression onto the screen. In all honesty, their series of the nineties and naughties were far superior to anything that has come after. There have been some exceptions to the rules, and GL-Beware My Power is one of them. Though, it shouldn't be, as it bastardises other DC storylines to bring you a newly rehashed origin story of the John Stewart Green Lantern.

The writers of this little masterpiece have stolen stories from throughout the DC Universe. You have the Rann and Thanagarian War - The Sinestro Corp - and Parallax. Any of these storylines would have made a decent movie in its own right. However, Ernie Altbacker and John Semper weave an intriguing story out of those stories' primary elements. Sadly, by doing so they destroy the chances of those superior stories making it to the screen, as they have totally reshaped the continuity (the writers' first fundamental mistake) - something DC is excellent at doing in their Crisis stories. This John Stewart is a cold-blooded killer. At the story's beginning, we see him stationed in an overseas warzone. He is a sniper who thinks nothing of killing the enemy. And that is the second significant mistake the writers make. This John Stewart has more issues than Guy Gardner, who at least fights his anger and fast temper. After leaving the marines, he has trouble readjusting to life on civvy street. We watch as he nearly snaps a guy's neck for trying to ask him to move aside. If it wasn't for the bum, he saves from getting his ass incinerated by a couple of well-intentioned thugs, we'd be hard pushed to see the goodness in the man. And in all truth, it makes little sense for the Guardians Of Oa to choose this John Stewart as a Green Lantern. Altbacker and Semper's GL is so different from the original that it alters how he controls the ring and creates his constructs. Bemused about what he should do, the ring flies him up to the JL Watchtower, where he meets the members on watch - Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, and Vixen. They come up with the idea of visiting Oa so John can learn how to remove the ring, once and for all. However, on their arrival on the planet, they find the Lanterns and the city destroyed. All signs lead them to believe it has something to do with the Rann and Thangarians. So off they fly in search of the truth. But the truth is twisted and dark... One of the worst things the writers do is to condense the Parallax story to a pitifully short timeline. And for a creature that is so powerful, they defeat it too easily. This corruption of the story, though, it works with the writers' tale, had me hanging my head and shaking it in negativity. It's the writer's third underlying mistake.

Jeff Wamester keeps things moving at a cracking pace - we hop through the story like a frog on crack. Keeping the pace at this accelerated tempo is ideal as it keeps the story moving and gives the audience less time to think about the story elements or the differences in the primary characters - Green Arrow doesn't come off as arrogant and self-assured as he should be. As for the animation techniques and styles, well we are back on familiar ground. The artists stick to DC's relatively blocky style, but what has improved is their use of CGI. In previous films, the CGI sections stuck out like a freshly hammered sore thumb. They appear smoother and less conspicuous now but are still a few metres away from perfection.

The voice acting isn't great. In truth, most of the cast could do with taking a refresher course on adding emotion to their vocal performances. Many superheroes come across as wimpy and whiney, especially Hal Jordan (Nolan North), Green Arrow (Jimmi Simpson), and Adam Strange (Brian Bloom). Even Aldis Hodge, who I regarded as a strong up-and-comer after watching him in Leverage, slips the new Green Lantern into the mawngy zone several times.

Though this Green Lantern tale is purloined from several other principal stories, it works. As such, I am happy to recommend it to any Sci-Fi Fantasy Comic Book fan who wants something enjoyable and entertaining to waste an hour and a half. I would highly recommend reading the "Borrowed" stories and the original John Stewart origin story as they all surpass this hashed-and-mashed-up work.

Now Parallax has been defeated in such an easy-peasy and handy-dandy manner, come on over and check out my Holding Out For A Hero, The Final Frontier, and Obsidian Dreams lists to see where I ranked Green Lantern - Beware My Power.

Take Care & Stay Well.

It's decent but not as good as some of the DC animated films last year

The animation looks really good during a lot of scenes but DC animation continues to be a decade behind in the way they budger the animation. Considering how good a lot of web series come out now it's high time they up their game. The story is all over the place with Thanagar-Rann war, John Stewart's origin story tweaking, Green Arrow going on a galaxy trotting quest and all the callbacks they can include. The twists are predictable but all these things are pretty much expected from these direct-to-video releases. But the pacing is perfect and there are a lot of moments that really invest you in the film. Being such an engaging film is what made the flaws look more apparent.

The AI that wrote, acted and animated this movie needs an upgrade

Especially when it comes to how humans talk, act and feel in real life.

This a soulless, stupid, illogical piece of trash. Character depth is non-existent and their behavior is unnatural/irrational. Everything they do feels robotic.

It is a huge disservice to the Green Lantern John Stewart who was a pretty cool addition in the Justice League (Unlimited) series. Here he is just a wooden, shallow puppet. The others are bad, too. They also take a huge dump on Hal Jordan... and the Guardians... and pretty much everyone else. Including the viewers.

It feels like it was designed by a machine that has been fed a certain amount of data so it can select the common points and make something out of it that resembles an actual film.

Solid sci-fi adventure

It forgets to actually be a John Stewart origin story and undermines the attempts to explore it's morality but Green Lantern: Beware My Power is still a solid sci-fi adventure that benefits from a strong voice cast, a fast pace and pretty strong animation.

Aldis Hodge is a great John Stewart thanks to the gravitas he brings to the role and he's able to use his talent and presence to make some questionable dialogue work just about. The rest of the voice cast is good with Nolan North being a natural standout.

The animation is once again becoming hemogonized but this style is still way more vibrant and detailed than the previous iteration. The music by Kevin Riepl is really good, adding some ominous sci-fi sounds the typically heroic proceedings.

I liked it

There was a lot going on in this movie. I looks great and voice acting was good. The pace is breakneack, but fun.

Jon Stewart is our GL this time and it is his fish out of water story. So naturally with such a character, you get a lot of heavy exposition, but I love lore.

This does however, make the movie feel bogged down in the sense of a traditional movie's pacing. They don't build their characters in the story, you'd have to be invested in these characters from prior material to even care. That can leave you feeling uncomfortable however, if one were to consider some consequences of this films plot.

It is a great 'what if' story to hypothetically reboot the GL corps. I've never read a GL comic with Jon Stewart so I cannot be sure if plot comic accurate, but it was a good enough origin. This movie wouldn't fit neatly into any other timelines, i know of. So if thats a super concern of yours walk away now.

The animation in the hand to hand fight scenes are great, space battles were a little run of the mill. I wish charcters were treated more like humans with visible emotiosn, rather than blank suits I recognize.

Unlikely Hero, Immeasurable Power

The superhero movie Green Lantern: Beware My Power (2022) features John Stewart, a former Marine dealing with PTSD, and takes viewers on an exciting cosmic adventure. John is portrayed by Aldis Hodge as he struggles to reconcile his background with the enormous power that the Green Lantern ring has placed upon him. Hodge gives the role depth and gravitas. Another highlight is the animation, which features imaginative and well-executed action scenes that demonstrate the virtually endless possibilities of the Green Lantern's constructions. Compared to other DC animated films, Beware My Power has a more somber tone as it examines the psychological effects of combat trauma and the weight of having unfathomable power.

Good action with some heart! :-)

I found John Stewart to be a more compelling, realistic character than Hal Jordan (especially this DCAMU version). Green Arrow and Hawk Girl were good supporting characters.

Logged into to Imdb purely to let others Know Stay Away From this movie.

This movie is painful.

If you are a Green a lantern fan.

If you are a dc Fan.

If you have ears.

If you remember the justice league Series from the early 2000s.

Characters are bizzaro. Caricatures of there Comic or cartoon counterparts.

No part of the movie makes sense . It is comically poorly Written, the dialogue feels like it was written under duress so many things in this movie given just a bit of thought could have been salvaged. Worst part is i after watching this and groaning at the dialogue and plot i can imagine a version of this that is not awful. It basically needed a heavy handed editing and or a complete Rewrite .

A different origin story

It was going somewhere, predictable, though flatlined and a bit boring til' the middle of the movie, but the changes from all the stories that were before didn't quite sang to me. It had some SW The Force Awakens ideas that also were a bit exaggerated, but at least it wasn't that disturbing, still not okay. I liked the drawing, designs, besides Sinestro's. I hope this new saga or storyline goes in a good direction. Hope is never lost! Peace & Love!

Great Green Lantern Movie!

I really enjoyed this Green Lantern movie. The story is different from all of the other Green Lantern origin stories and that's what I enjoyed most. It's also a good story! The funny thing is, that's also why this movie has received so many poor ratings, people don't like change.

Comic book fans can accept the multiverse in both DC and Marvel, yet they can't accept a new take on the Green Lantern. I see this movie taking place in another universe and enjoy it for what it is. I'm glad it's not the same story we've heard for the past 70 years. It's a new angle on the Green Lantern.

Also, the animation is great! Some of the best animation that I've seen in years. I look forward to many more "new" stories about the DC superheroes. One thing that DC knows how to do is make a great animated movie.

Tight! could have been Tighter!!

The animation was great! Some of the best animation I've seen for the DC animated universe, or what is it called now? The tomorrowverse? Is that a thing?

Visually stunning all the way from the flow of the action scenes to how that lantern energy was produced. It was all top notch.

I can't blame an animated feature for putting all their cash in the animation, but they could have left some for the writers. This story was weak. I would say it was watered down, but I noticed if felt like too much and too long, and the long story allowed me to see things about the story that were flawed, something anyone can pick up if you know just a small bit about the green lantern.

Then the voice over did nothing to make the long and weak story interesting. Not that the voice talent of Aldis Hodge as John Stewart was not great. He was the reason why I wanted to see it. It was one of those situations where it felt like not one was in the same room when recording this. It was put together in a way that felt like no one was really having a conversation just reciting words and that did not help an already weak story.

As far as animated Green Lantern movies go, Green Lantern: First Flight is still on top (Actually, hands down the best Green Lantern movie) Green Lantern: Beware my Power may have worked better as a 5-part miniseries over a movie, but still the animation was excellent.

Inferior to Green Lantern: First Flight but entertaining nonetheless.

In 2009 I watched my first Green Lantern animated film. This was my first time watching this superhero. I never read the comic book or watched the Ryan Reynolds live action movie.

In short, I was blown away by the script, animation and talented voice-actors. This is proof of what can be achieved with the right story and direction and is a real gem that can be watched again and again without getting bored.

Back to Green Lantern: Beware My Power. In this one a recently discharged marine John Stewart who has been severely affected by his tour of duty and sore in need of counseling is given another chance by being a defender of the universe as a Green Lantern when he is given the ring by one of the last and dying ancients.

The movie in itself is dark. There is some tongue-in-cheek humor but not over the top. The action scenes are also good but not excellent. The voice actors do a competent job but the script itself is so ludicrous and mind boggling that it lets the whole film down, which is a shame as it was a good one to begin with.

A welcome change from Hal Jordan to John Stewart to add to the Green Lantern franchise. Hope to see more movies concerning this superhero in the future.

Green Lanter (Hal Jordan or John Stewart)

Finally, the story that definitively clarifies the real reason why there was a change of Green Lantern characters. All my life I have known Green Lantern Hal Jordan, I grew up watching the series and movies, and from one moment to another without any explanation in the series the new Green Lantern John Stewart appears, a total surprise. I accepted the situation without complaints but I was left with that uncomfortable annoyance... why? What happened? Why the change? Where is Hal? Will he return at some point?

Now, finally my existential doubt is clarified. I will finally be able to sleep peacefully at night knowing what really happened to Hal.

Good story, great ending. Two thumbs up.

Amazing

Dc animated movies are CONSISTENTLY amazing i do not know why Warner Brothers would remove cartoons from their Home Box Office catalogue when their Detective Comic books animated movies are the only good Detective Comic movies?! TELL ME THEIR LOGIC. The violence was perfect never over gratuitous. Definitely worth a watch and definitely watch it with your family. Also this international movie data base character limit is beyond annoying 300 characters is plenty long enough i shouldnt have to write a dissertation before you let me post my review like seriously i passed english class i dont need to have homework.

so much expositioning

Decorated Marine sniper John Stewart is home with nightmarish issues. A UFO crashes nearby and the alien Green Lantern had been searching for him. He is given a ring with the powers of the Green Lantern. He is their representative on Earth. The ring pulls him to the Justice League Watchtower where he encounters Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, and Vixen.

This is DC animation. It's never good when the words economy or trade get mentioned in a sci-fi exposition. They should just call it a bridge. There is a lot of exposition every fifteen minutes or so. That tends to grind the movie to a halt especially when it's done so flatly. Otherwise, this is fine with lots of action.

Soldier. Lantern. Hero.

Green Lantern: Beware My Power (2022) is the fifth entry in the second phase of the DC Animated Movie Universe and it was okay enough.

Positives for Green Lantern: Beware My Power (2022): I likes seeing this origin story for John Stewart and how he became a green lantern. The voice cast does a great job with their performances including Aldis Hodge as John Stewart, Jimmi Simpson as Green Arrow, Ike Amadi as Martian Manhunter, Brian Bloom as Adam Strange and Jamie Gray Hyder as Shayera Hol. I liked the interactions with these characters as they get to know each other. The movie has good pacing that kept me invested in the story. And finally, the action sequences are fun to watch with these characters.

Negatives for Green Lantern: Beware My Power (2022): There is way too much going on in this movie and it feels overstuffed. You have to be introduced to new versions of these iconic characters and there are too many of them to focus on. I wasn't a fan of the character arc for John Stewart and it makes him deeply unlikable. The villains feel like a complete afterthought that our heroes need to stop. And finally, there was no point where the movie felt like it was going kick into the next gear and be great.

Overall, Green Lantern: Beware My Power (2022) is a fine entry in the DC Animated Movie Universe, but it was a disappointing experience for me as a fan of these characters and this movie universe.
