Always a valuable resource for behind-the-scenes insight, director David F. Sandberg made a video detailing his approach to practical effects in Until Dawn.
A must-watch for aspiring filmmakers, the video plays like an eight-minute film class on special effects that includes test foots he shot with his wife and producing partner Lotta Losten.
It also teases a few of the movie’s in-camera gore gags, including a worm burrowing into a face, a pickax stab through the chest, a head repeatedly smashed on the ground, and a leg amputation.
Applied Arts FX Studio handled the practical effects in the film, with visual effects by Upp.

Hold your breath as you watch the first clip from Until Dawn, because there’s a jump scare waiting at the end.
Based on Supermassive Games’ survival horror video game, the film opens in theaters on April 25 from Sony Pictures.
David F. Sandberg directs from a script by Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman.
One year after her sister mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening.
Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again — only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left,...

Until Dawn has received a “R” rating from the MPA for “bloody horror violence, gore and language throughout.”
This comes as little surprise, as the film has been described as “an R-rated love letter to the horror genre,” and the survival horror video game on which its based was rated “M” for mature.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Until Dawn opens in theaters April 25 via Sony Pictures.

When it comes to slasher films, the iconography of the killer is often more important than the story. As long as fans are being given the chance to watch Michael Myers show up in his white-painted Captain Kirk finest to slaughter anyone who gets in his way, no one cares about trying to make sense of the the nonsensical and convoluted timeline of the "Halloween" franchise. Even people who have never watched a horror movie in their life could probably identify Jason Voorhees from "Friday the 13th" in his iconic hockey mask, or clock Leatherface from "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" even without his titular weapon. The look of a slasher villain should strike fear into the hearts of the audience ... but it should also be memorable enough to be marketable.
It's a delicate balance, and it's not the easiest thing in the world to pull off. The basic "sackhead...

All of us here at Bloody Disgusting are devastated to learn that horror icon Tony Todd, the legendary actor who played the title character in Candyman (1992) and its sequels, passed away on November 6 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 69. Deadline first reported the news.

Are you shocked to learn the author of /Film's three Halloween Horror Nights articles this year is a haunted attraction addict? Invite me to your Halloween mazes, hayrides, docked ocean liners, and Shaqtoberfests. I crave haunt season entertainment. Even better, I crave "Haunt Season Horror" movies. Is that trademarked? Can I coin that terminology?
Haunt Season Horror titles must take place in a Horror Nights-like maze or immersive experience, turning seasonal amusements into slaughterhouse backdrops. Marquee examples would be "Hell Fest," your corporate-branded Six Flags Fright Fest take, or "The Houses October Built," which ventures into the less moderated realm of do-it-yourself haunts. These films prey upon the rational fears of patrons who attend these pop-up "Scarehouses," stripping away the safety of regulated horror experiences. What happens when a killer infiltrates a place where commercial terror is purchased at a premium? It's the ultimate Halloween treat.

Over on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel, we talk about horror movies and TV shows all year long – but that doesn’t mean that the “spooky season” building up to Halloween isn’t a special time of the year for us. I may watch horror movies all year, but for me October is a month-long horror marathon where I try to pack as many horror movies into each day as possible. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and it’s the day when I make sure to watch the likes of FleshEater (1988), Murder Party (2007), The Hollow (2004), Trick or Treat (1986), and Trick ‘r Treat (2007). And maybe something involving Michael Myers. In anticipation of the Halloween festivities, several of our JoBlo Horror Originals staff members got together to give some horror movie recommendations – and you can watch them reveal their Halloween viewing picks in the video embedded above!

Spooky season is nearly here.
And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.
In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. This year doesn’t have anything quite like that, but it’s still a powerful collection of titles for every viewer.
The Sept. 1 batch includes classics like “Bride of Frankenstein,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Werewolf of London;” 1980s favorites like “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “The Funhouse” and “The Thing;” along with more modern hits like the original “Candyman,” Jordan Peele’s “Us” and several entries in the “Saw” franchise.

The film version will be directed by Lights Out director David F. Sandberg. Annabelle Comes Home writer Gary Dauberman wrote the latest version of the script, with Blair Butler (Hell Fest) working on a previous draft.
Michael Cimino is best known for starring in Hulu's Love, Simon spinoff series Love, Victor, in addition to appearing in Never Have I Ever and Annabelle Comes Home. A'zion is probably best known for starring in the Netflix drama Grand Army, though she's no stranger to the horror genre, having starred in Hellraiser (2022). She also has the indie horror movie Hell House in development.

American Star is the latest film from Spanish director Gonzalo López-Gallego whose output has ranged from Apollo 18 and Open Grave to Backdraft 2, a 28-year later Dtv sequel to the 1991 hit. Here he and writer Nacho Faerna are presenting a variation on a well-worn theme, the criminal who’s about to pull off their last job before retiring.
In this case, the criminal is a hitman named Wilson who has come to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands to perform what should be an easy assignment. But complications ensue right from the start, when he drives out to the unnamed target’s secluded house, he’s not there. Someone does arrive, but it’s a young woman, not the man he was expecting. Wilson bides his time, then slips out unseen,...

Earlier this year, it was announced that New Line Cinema had come out the winner in a bidding war over the haunted house project Occupant, which would be based on a 39-page short story by new writer Victor Sweetser. Now that the writers strike has come to an end, The Hollywood Reporter has discovered that New Line Cinema and producer Zach Cregger, the writer/director of last year’s Barbarian (watch it Here), have found the writer who will flesh Sweetser’s story out into a screenplay: Blair Butler, a former writer and on-air personality for shows like Attack of the Show who has gone on to work on several genre films. Her previous writing credits include The Invitation (the vampire movie that starred Nathalie Emmanuel), Polaroid, and Hell Fest. Butler was also a producer on the Marvel-inspired TV series Helstrom.
The Occupant purchase was part of Cregger’s year-long winning streak.

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures has come out the winner in a bidding war over the rights to bring an adaptation of Jack Follman’s 29-page short story It’s Over to the screen, forking over an amount somewhere in the mid mid- to high-six-figure range to acquire the project. One reason why It’s Over was so appealing to studios is the fact that it has an experienced genre writer attached to handle the screenplay adaptation: Akela Cooper, whose credits include Hell Fest, Malignant, M3GAN, The Nun II, and the upcoming sequel M3GAN 2.0. Cooper is also co-executive producer of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
It’s Over hit the marketplace last Wednesday, the same day the writers strike finally ended after nearly five months. According to Deadline, “the town responded quickly”.

In the first fifteen minutes of Hell Fest, before entering the Halloween carnival (of the same name), an overly excited Taylor- played by Bex Taylor Klaus – tells her friends about a real life murder that happened at a similar event nearby, the year before.
“What can I say, some people are just evil – they’re monsters, and to them, every single day is Halloween… and they dress up, so we don’t know,” Taylor states.
In response to the protagonist Natalie asking, “Know what?” she explains, “ That they walk among us.”
This quick minute of dialogue is easily overlooked, and yet it’s vital to understanding Hell Fest as a whole. It lays out the theme of the next hour and a half, and serves as a foreshadowing of the evil in plain sight. As well as offering brief exposition about our unknown villain.

When one thinks of haunted houses combined with a horror movie, one might think of the Conjuring house or maybe the iconic house in The Exorcist. However, for this article, actual haunted houses, attractions that one can go to and get scared by cheap costumes, and jump scares, are going to be featured. It's a classic trope in the horror genre: a group of teenagers heading out to find the scariest and sketchiest haunted house they could find, leading them to torture, and death, usually ending with a lone survivor.
More recently, in the 2000s, there have been more movies with the plot following a group of friends heading out on a spooky holiday toward their doom inside a haunted house, or even a festival where things get even worse. Notably, these types of movies can be repetitive and predictable, but that's what makes them so good. Viewers suspect how...

In many ways, Hell Fest is an unremarkable horror movie. Released in 2018, it didn’t do too badly at the box office, but failed to make any real splash on the scene. It is one of those movies that can very accurately be summarized in a single sentence: a murderer is loose in a spooky carnival, but nobody notices because it’s a spooky carnival. It is somewhat in the same vein as The Houses October Built and Hell House LLC, in that it centers its action around an environment that is deliberately meant to be scary, which blurs the lines of reality and plays with the characters’ instincts. It’s a great concept, and some very effective movies have been made of it. But while Hell Fest has fun with this idea, it is an unexpectedly compelling and humanistic final sequence that sparks the audience’s imagination, and hints...

Happy Halloweekend, dear readers! The best weekend of the year has finally arrived, and I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to indulge in all sorts of spooky shenanigans over the next few days. For this Halloween edition of “From Streams to Screams,” I decided to focus on horror movies that have come out in the last few years that would be perfect to enjoy while celebrating the arrival of Halloween.
If you’re anything like me, I tend to focus a lot on my favorite horror movies throughout the month of October to feed my nostalgia. So this year, I’ve been trying to check out some recent horror movies I may have missed in an effort to broaden my horizons a bit. Cerebrum, the debut feature from director Arvi and co-writer Gary D. Houk made its premiere April 25th at the Worldfest Film Festival. The tale of experiments with human memory and father-son estrangement attracted a bit of attention ahead of its screening. Does it live up to the hype?
Tom Davis is forced to move back home with his estranged father Kirk. Tim is not happy about this although Chloe is glad to see him back in town.
Kirk is a scientist, a “cowboy Einstein” as his assistant Bhuvanesh (Anirudh Pisharody; Killer Competition) calls him. And he’s offered Tim a nice chunk of money to be the test subject for something he’s working on. A way to digitize and store the contents of your brain,...
