Isabel Sandoval, the Hollywood-based Filipino filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed “Lingua Franca,” is putting the finishing touches on her latest feature “Moonglow,” a romantic noir set against the backdrop of Marcos-era Philippines in 1979.
The film is selected for the Hong Kong — Asia Film Financing Forum (Haf), the project market that operates concurrently with Hong Kong FilMart.
The Filipino-language thriller follows Dahlia, a disillusioned police aide who steals money from the safe of her corrupt police chief boss, distributing it to slum dwellers whose homes were destroyed. Unaware of her actions, the police chief assigns Dahlia to investigate the theft alongside his nephew Charlie — who happens to be Dahlia’s former lover.
“I’ve always been enamored with the methodical, slow-burn thrillers of Jean-Pierre Melville,” Sandoval told Variety. “The idea of marrying those sensibilities with the lyrical camerawork and romanticism of Max Ophüls is how the film started.”

Since its release, there has been clamor for a sequel to the hit TV drama Normal People, which made breakthrough stars of its two leads Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones when it was released during lockdown in April 2020.
But one of the cast, Irish actor Éanna Hardwicke, has shared he doesn’t like the idea of a sequel, as he’s “not a fan of rehashing things.”
BBC News reports that the actor was speaking at a pre-Oscars party in Los Angeles Thursday evening.
The BBC drama was adapted by writer Sally Rooney from her own bestselling novel and followed the on-off relationship of Irish teenagers Marianne and Connell.
Hardwicke played Rob, a schoolfriend of Connell’s, in the series. He told BBC News: “It’s nicer to leave it in people’s imagination, and leave it as it was.”

Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James are joining forces for a new thriller... but no, it's not for the next James Bond film. After finishing up production last year, the unlikely duo will be starring in Fuze, which also boasts a stacked supporting cast. Now in post-production, the buzzy thriller is finally gaining some momentum as it has sold to numerous international distributors across the globe. It may not be the thriller fans of the actors have envisioned them in, but the creative forces behind Fuze should be plenty to justify a viewing.
Variety exclusively reports that in addition to Sky acquiring the film's theatrical release in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Fuze has secured spots in several other international markets, including Canada, Australia, Indonesia, and Latin America, among many others. As of right now, it is unclear when or if Fuze will hit theaters in the United States, but expect...

American Primeval recently premiered on Netflix, and since then, it’s managed to garner quite a fanbase. Set in 1857, the series chronicles a number of stories that all converge in America’s Utah territory during the turbulent time of westward expansion. A dark western thriller, the series showcases ongoing clashes between the U.S. Army, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Lds), and multiple indigenous tribes. The catalyst of the series begins with the Mormon-sanctioned Mountain Meadows Massacre and then continues to display Brigham Young’s (Kim Coates) efforts to control Utah outside the confines of the United States, no matter the cost.
While the series also tells the story of Sara (Betty Gilpin), her young son Devin (Preston Mota), and their reluctant guide Isaac (Taylor Kitsch), who is helping them in their efforts to travel west, American Primeval's overarching narrative focuses on the bloody and...

[This story contains mild spoilers from Netflix’s American Primeval.]
In a television landscape where Taylor Sheridan has largely cornered the market on stories about western expansion with Yellowstone and its spinoffs 1883 and 1923, American Primeval has stood out for its exploration of the Utah Territory and the role settlers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Lds) played in halting migration to the area. The efforts of which culminated in the gruesome 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre, depicted in the Netflix miniseries, that left some 120 travelers dead.
The six-episode Western drama written and created by Mark L. Smith and directed by Peter Berg, follows the journey of Sara (Betty Gilpin), a woman on the run, who seeks out a guide at Fort Bridger in Wyoming to assist her in transporting her young son Devin (Preston Mota) to his father in Missouri. Robert Eggers’ new Gothic horror movie Nosferatu is a masterclass in dread and fear, but it has an unusual connection to a classic kids’ show from Nickelodeon. The American film-maker’s fourth feature film is a remake of the iconic silent German film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, which is itself a retelling of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It has generated acclaim from both critics and audiences alike along with a box office return well above initial projections, and there has even been some chatter about major award nominations for the horror movie.
Oddly enough, Robert Eggers has already made special note of Nosferatu’s connection to another Nickelodeon show. The director called out the fact that younger moviegoers might have learned about the original Nosferatu from one quick scene in Spongebob Squarepants, the long-running animated show which featured an appearance from Max Schreck’s Count Orlok as in a...

Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man movies elevated the actor’s career to a stratospheric level overnight. However, the success and fame that comes with donning the red and blue costume of Marvel’s most profitable and iconic hero comes at a price. As Garfield recently revealed during an appearance at the Marrakech Film Festival (via Variety), the benefits of stepping into the role of Spider-Man were offset by interviewers and fans only ever wanting to talk about the web-slinger.
As part of the jury at the festival, Garfield has found himself in a commanding position in Hollywood over the last decade, from being sought for some coveted roles to finding himself on nomination short-lists for many awards. Sarah Desjardins, who has recurred on the series since Season 1 as Shauna’s (Melanie Lynskey) daughter Callie, will be seen in an expanded role following a promotion to series regular. Desjardins was quietly elevated before production began on Season 3.
Callie has a strained relationship with Shauna, in particular, and Shauna’s husband Jeff.
Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets is the saga of a team of talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.

After waiting nearly 30 years for a sequel, Twisters characters offer a fresh group of movie stars to the world of storm chasing. The original Twister follows a pair of married storm chasers who put themselves at the mercy of dust storms and tornadoes to implement a new weather alert system. The film was a box office triumph, grossing around $500 million, with much of this success attributed to Twisters memorable cast of Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, and Cary Elwes. Twisters seeks to match that effect with a cast of modern stars like Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos.
Twisters has been in development for a long time, with numerous writers and directors considered before landing on Minari director Lee Isaac Chung and The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith. 10 Series to Check Out if You Loved the Menendez Brothers Series - Main Image
Monster may have covered the story of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer first, and this year the season decided to focus on the true-crime story of Lyle and Eric Menendez, brothers who were convicted of murdering their wealthy parents with a shotgun.
The third season of the series is now set to tell the true story of serial killer Ed Gein with Sons of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam, but while fans wait for that to come out in a couple of years or so, there are some other true-crime dramas that are very well worth checking out if you got bitten by the true-crime bug.
American Crime Story Series
Before Monster was even a show, creator Ryan Murphy had another anthology series called American Crime Story that followed real-life crimes that became the center of huge scandals.

There he opens tonight, taking on the theatre’s original angry young man, Jimmy Porter, a mammoth career-defining role, in a revival of John Osborne’s 1956 classic Look Back in Anger, which takes place in a dreary attic apartment where Jimmy rails at a society that has become “sick.”

Sam Worthington plays a corporate enforcer in the new whistleblower thriller “Relay,” and discussed the role New York plays in the film — the actual New York City and its energy. “I’m glad that we actually got to shoot in New York, and not like, say, Toronto for New York, or somewhere like that, which normally happens,” Worthington told Steve Pond at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design.
The film is directed by David McKenzie, who directed the Oscar-nominated “Hell or High Water” and previously worked with Worthington on FX on Hulu series “Under the Banner of Heaven.”
“Relay” explores the world of corporate whistleblowers and the secretive relay centers that allow for anonymous communication. The film stars Riz Ahmed as Tom, a “fixer” whose specialty is brokering major payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten to ruin them. He’s careful...

David Mackenzie delivers a tight thriller with “Relay,” premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film stars Riz Ahmed as Tom, who operates as sort of a middleman between corporate whistleblowers and the companies. The extremely clandestine Tom operates in a morally ambiguous area until Lily James’ Sarah engages his services. What follows becomes a cat and mouse game and a mix of high and low tech that climaxes in a tense twist, with some shade thrown at corporations, too. Black Bear reps international rights for the thriller, while CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group are handling the U.S.
The director behind “Hell and High Water” and “Under the Banner of Heaven” is currently close to wrapping his next film, “Fuze,” which is filming around London and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson. “So it’s been pretty intense, sort of complex, kind of heisty type thing all around London.

After directing episodes for “Six Feet Under,” “Game of Thrones,” and, most recently, “Fellow Travelers,” Daniel Minahan returns to direct his first feature film in over 20 years. “On Swift Horses” stars a powerhouse cast that includes Jacob Elordi, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Diego Calva, Will Poulter and Sasha Calle. The film is based on the queer novel by Shannon Pufahl, and centers on newlyweds Muriel and Lee who are beginning a new life when he returns from the Korean War.
The chemistry among all the characters has been teased as palpable and infectious. While most of the promotional first look images thus far have teased both Edgar-Jones’ and Elordi’s characters together, she says that they don’t have a ton of scenes together and that building chemistry with him “was not too difficult.”
“It was really important that in those scenes that you felt that [chemistry],” she told IndieWire at the film’s premiere at TIFF.
