Maurice Pialat’s La maison des bois, playing in New York this weekend at the Museum of the Moving Image's retrospective on the director, consists of seven episodes each about an hour long. The series follows Hervé (Hervé Levy), a young boy living in a “house in the woods” with foster parents Albert (Pierre Doris) and Jeanne (Jacqueline Dufranne), and is set during WWII. Hervé hangs out, gets into trouble, goes to school. His father (Paul Crauchet) is in the army; his mother left them before the film’s events. The story overlaps in many ways with Pialat’s previous film, L’enfance nue, to the point where it’s easy to assume that Pialat was tapping the same autobiographical well for both projects. There was a time, not very long ago, when obtaining a decent copy of David Lynch’s first masterpiece, Eraserhead, was problematic. Selected in 2004 for preservation in the National Film Registry, nearly four decades of overriding nearly every other piece of flotsam and jetsam comprising the cult classic continuum, one of the most exquisite directorial debuts of all time gets a lavish Criterion Collection treatment. A film whose aural devices equal its bizarre and unforgettable visuals, outside of a theatrical screening, it’s the definitive way to experience this dream of dark and troubling things.

To outline the narrative of Eraserhead feels rather reductive since the film is a visual and auditory experience that requires first hand exposure. But, basically, it’s about a guy named Henry Spencer (Jack Nance) who is forced to marry a neurotic girlfriend, Mary X (Charlotte Stewart) because she gave birth to a creature/baby he impregnated her with.

Earlier this week, Film4 announced that it was trying something a bit different for the release of Ben Wheatley's upcoming movie, A Field In England. It's a modestly budgeted movie, shot over two weeks, and quite experimental in its approach. That presented Film4 with something of a quandary: how could it get the film out to the widest possible audience?

Back when Wheatley's last film, the terrific Sightseers, was released, our Twitter feed was deluged with people keen to see the film, only to find their local cinema wasn't showing it. It's, sadly, becoming a regular issue with smaller movies, that simply getting a decent number of screens is becoming trickier.

It’s fair to say that some films get confused as to what they are. The Man Inside for example has “urban drama” elements about a character trying to stop his family from falling into the trap of the gang culture that is so prevalent in this type of film, then of course there is the element of boxing and add to that the theme of parental abuse it’s easy to get confused as to what to focus on. While some complain that there is not enough boxing in it and some think it’s not “urban” enough the actual point of the film can be lost. This is what I feel hinders The Man Inside from being seen for what it is.

With the awards season gearing up for the big, corpulent, back-slapping ceremonies throughout January and February, we're hurtling towards the end of another cinematic year with the usual sense of anticipation and predictability.

With Daniel Day Lewis' version of President Lincoln touted for acting plaudits, and every other Best Supporting Actress candidate preparing their best loser faces for when Les Miserables' Anne Hathaway scoops every gong going, there's little regard for the great performances in lesser-seen films, or genre cinema. And so, as I did in the previous two years, I've formulated a list of the performances that nobody is talking about in relation to the awards season.

The Dark Knight rose (sorry, that’s awful) to the top of the Box Office pile this weekend banking an incredible £14 million since its opening last Friday. This makes it the third highest grossing three-day opening behind Avengers Assemble and Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2. Both The Amazing Spider-Man and Ice Age 4 saw their taking tumble, dropping 73 and 79% respectively, and it’s difficult to see anything unseating Tdkr at the top of the chart for a fair few weeks yet.

Much like last time out, there’s fairly slim pickens out this weekend as the studios undoubtedly see the danger of releasing any of their movies during Tdkr’s first few weeks. Their blockbusters would have to share the market with a more powerful rival, and their mid-range major movies would simply be buried. Dr Seuss's most environmentally minded story was a natural choice for movie treatment, but as with so many others (How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Horton Hears A Who!), the temptation to "expand" on the original runs out of control. Seuss's elegant tale of a land where they paved paradise and cut down all the Truffula trees has been injected with all the compulsory gags, subplots, musical numbers and painfully bright landscapes that family animation is now deemed to require, making for an eco-tale that's packed with artificial additives.

As big and dark and serious as The Avengers was big and light and fun, the climax to Nolan's Batman trilogy ticks most of the boxes it was demanded to – which is quite an achievement. There's an Occupy-style theme to baddy Bane's Gotham City lockdown, which forces Bruce Wayne to consider his 1% financial status and Batman to revive his punching and growling skills (prompted by Hathaway's slinky cat burglar). Some cheesy cliches (and questionable politics) are needed to tie it all together, but it's still the solid, epic finale you'd hoped for.

This summer my new feature film The Man Inside is released, starring Peter Mullan, David Harewood, Ashley 'Bashy' Thomas and Michelle Ryan. Like any filmmaker, I’m hoping for success, but it’s definitely not guaranteed.

The reality is that it’s a British Independent film competing in a marketplace full of Hollywood blockbusters, and ultimately, no film has a right to be successful. The subject matter has to connect with people and there has to be a healthy dollop of luck too.

It makes for sobering reading to see out how many British films have come out over the last 12 months, and how many of those have been successful. The bigger budget UK films with bigger stars - films such as The Woman In Black...

Following last year’s supernatural thriller Stormhouse writer/director Dan Turner’s new film, The Man Inside, has an altogether more down to Earth feel, and this punchy new trailer is a very promising first impression.

Ashley Bashy Thomas leads this story of a young man coming to terms with a violent past and a brutal relationship with his Father, in what looks to be a menacing turn by David Harewood (who is in fine form on HBO’s Homeland of late), with the help of boxing trainer Peter Mullan. The trailer we have today paints a bleak portrait of the young man in a desperate struggle to find his feet and take a different road to the one laid out before him.
