Superman's New Doomsday-Level Villain Is His Exact Philosophical Opposite
Image
Superman is about to face a new villain known only as the Chained, who is being compared to Doomsday - the villain who killed him with its bare hands. However, the Chained isn't just powerful - he's Superman's ideological opposite, here to test the very core of the Man of Steel. The Chained will debut in September's Superman #6, from Joshua Williamson and Gleb Melnikov.

A lot of new information has come out of Sdcc, and one of the biggest reveals is the brand-new enemy for Superman. The Chained is an enemy so terrifying and powerful that even Lex Luthor feared him. Lex created a prison specifically to hold the Chained and sealed him away for years, but with Lex Luthor now in prison and Superman running the business SuperCorp, which is a rebrand of LexCorp, Clark now has access to all of Lex's secrets, including where the Chained is hidden.

Comedian, author and actor Patricia Williams aka Ms. Pat has booked her first hourlong stand-up comedy special at Netflix, Variety has learned exclusively.

The special, which is still to be titled, will be shot at the Atlanta Comedy Theater on Sept. 25. While this is Ms. Pat’s first hourlong special, she previously appeared in the second season of the streamer’s “The Degenerates” stand-up series, delivering a half-hour set.

Ms. Pat’s unique voice comes from always being honest and personal to her own life, rather than reaching for a hot topic or headline of the moment. A Soft Box-Office Debut For ‘In the Heights’ Lets ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ Reclaim The Top Spot
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Corey Hawkins, Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Barrera, Dascha Polanco, Leslie Grace, and Anthony Ramos in D'où l'on vient (2021)
The critics swooned for it, the studio marketed the heck out of it, and its feel-good message couldn’t have arrived at a better time. So why did Warner Bros’ splashy new movie-musical In the Heights receive such a lukewarm turnout in its opening weekend? With advance predictions pegging the debut of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s stage-to-screen adaptation at around $20 million, In the Heights fell well short of expectations, pulling in a soft $11.4 million in its first frame, leaving an opening for the three-week-old horror sequel A Quiet Place Part II to reclaim the top spot in North America. Meanwhile, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway hopped its way into third place in with a $10.4 million bow.

After dropping down to second place last weekend, the John Krasinski-directed A Quiet Place Part II rebounded with just under $11.7 million in its third weekend in theaters. Paramount’s PG-13-rated suspense sequel...

Box Office Reality Falls Short of Hopes as ‘In the Heights’ and ‘Peter Rabbit 2’ Disappoint
Image
Here’s a concise description of the reality of the state of moviegoing: In two consecutive weekends, Warner Bros. released two movies. One was the eighth entry in the “Conjuring” horror franchise. The other, an acclaimed musical film, celebrated as a breakthrough in representation of Latinos onscreen. Both concurrently showed at no extra cost on HBO Max for subscribers.

“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” grossed $24.1 million. “In the Heights” managed less than half, at just $11.4 million.

Jon M. Chu’s widely anticipated and critically adored film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 2008 Broadway musical failed to reach #1, falling $245,000 behind a strong third weekend for John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount). The well-received sequel rose from #2 last week and dashed past the $100-million mark, the first film to do so in over a year.

Four films grossed over $10 million in a single weekend for the first...

12 Monkeys Director Reveals The Studio Wanted Another A-List Star In The Lead
Image
Terry Gilliam is one of the most famously outspoken directors in the industry, and he knows fine well the impact it had on his career. If he’d simply smiled and nodded like many other filmmakers do, then he would have ended up tackling a number of high profile blockbusters having turned down Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Forrest Gump, both of which experienced major success with Robert Zemeckis at the helm.

He also knocked back an Alien sequel and eventual Best Picture winner Braveheart, tried twice to drag Watchmen out of development hell, found himself on the shortlist for The Truman Show and was J.K. Rowling’s number one choice for adapting Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The author’s preferred candidate was shot down by Warner Bros., but Gilliam remembered and then rejected the opportunity to enter talks for sixth installment Half-Blood Prince.

That leaves 1995 sci-fi 12 Monkeys...

The Dark Knight Trends As Fans Name It The Best Comic Book Movie Ever
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther was the first comic book movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, with Todd Phillips’ Joker repeating the trick the following year, but the reason the organization widened the field from five films to anywhere up to ten in the first place is largely due to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

That’s why the Academy’s decision was informally labeled as ‘the Dark Knight rule,’ because many people believed that the second installment in the filmmaker’s Batman trilogy was grossly and unfairly overlooked for the top prize at the 2009 ceremony, especially when the underwhelming Frost/Nixon and The Reader landed nods for Best Picture.

It did win two gongs from eight nominations in total, though, including one for Heath Ledger’s iconic performance, and in the years since, The Dark Knight has been lauded as arguably...

Attending the press conference were a raft of movie acting legends including Bryan Cranston (“Mack”), Sam Rockwell (“Ivan”), Angelina Jolie (“Stella”), Danny DeVito (“Bob the dog”), Helen Mirren (“Snickers the poodle”), Brooklynn Prince (“Ruby”), Chaka Khan (“Henrietta the chicken”), Mike White (“Frankie the seal” / screenwriter), Phillipa Soo (“Thelma the parrot”) and Ron Funchess (“Murphy the rabbit”) and Thea Sharrock (director).

During the super fun press conference, the cast talked about how they channelled their artsy side, Angelina Jolie and Brooklynn Prince talk about dressing up as elephants and bringing their characters to life while the rest talk about creating something so fresh and new and the wonder of working on such a great project. Terry Gilliam Was Adapting a Lost Stanley Kubrick Idea Until Lockdown ‘Ruined Everything’
Image
Provocateur Terry Gilliam has been wending his way back to filmmaking ever since his long-suffering 2018 Cervantes epic “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” finally hit U.S. theaters last year. However, like many directors who were in the middle of new projects, the pandemic has proven a challenge. As revealed in a new interview with the Ventotene Film Festival, as shared by Italian outlet La Repubblica (via The Playlist), Gilliam said he was at work on a movie inspired by a concept from Stanley Kubrick until lockdown stalled the film, despite having a script and cast ready to go.

“I was doing a film that was originally an idea by Stanley Kubrick,” said Gilliam, who added he was due to begin filming in September. “There was a script and I had a cast, but the lockdown has ruined everything.” The “Brazil” and “12 Monkeys” director also added, “At the moment,...

Japan Sinks 2020, the disaster anime on Netflix, is a perfect encapsulation of this awful year.

Image
Henry Cavill, star of The Witcher and our current Superman, recently built a gaming PC from top to bottom. The 37-year-old actor posted a video of himself, in a tank top, assembling the computer on Instagram during quarantine, which had a certain effect on the collective internet. China Movie Theaters In Low Risk Areas Can Reopen On July 20
Image
Breaking: Those theaters in low risk areas in China “can resume business in an orderly manner” as early as Monday, July 20, the China Film Administration announced in a recent notice.

There were rumblings in foreign distribution that China would start reopening on this date, however, sources weren’t so sure whether that meant simply that the Shanghai Film Festival was taking place on July 25. Today’s news is a positive sign of something greater.

Of course, those theaters reopening have to practice proper safety Covid-19 protocols. “Middle and high-risk areas are temporarily closed for business,” said the China Film Adminstration, “Once adjusted from low-risk areas to medium-high-risk areas, the epidemic prevention and control regulations shall be strictly implemented, and the prevention and control measures shall be strictly implemented.”

Cinemas have been closed since late January in the world’s second largest box office market,...

Amazon Prime Video Rolling Out ‘Watch Party’ Social Viewing On Laptops
Image
Amazon Prime Video is matching moves by streaming rivals by rolling out Watch Party, a new feature allowing simultaneous viewing of film or TV titles up to 100 Prime subscribers.

The feature, available for Prime members in the U.S. at no cost, started to slowly roll out Monday on laptops only. Apple’s Safari browser will not support the the native social viewing tool. It is unclear when — or if — it will arrive on other platforms beyond laptops, like gaming consoles, connected-tv devices or smart TVs.

Hulu said in May it is testing a feature it also calls Watch Party on its ad-free tier. Many Netflix users have spent time in recent months using the “Netflix Party” extension for Chrome web browsers. A Seattle-based startup called Scener has also announced ventures with HBO, Netflix and other programmers to enable social viewing. Kast is a more recent successor to predecessors like Rabbit,...

Elisabeth Moss’ Paranormal Thriller ‘Run Rabbit Run’ Lands at Stx Entertainment
Elisabeth Moss
Stx Entertainment has acquired worldwide distribution rights to the Elisabeth Moss paranormal thriller “Run Rabbit Run,” the company announced Tuesday.

STXfilms will distribute director Daina Reid’s film in the U.S., U.K and Ireland with STXinternational set to introduce the film to buyers at this week’s Cannes Virtual Market. Umbrella Entertainment will be releasing in Australia and New Zealand.

Hulu Launches New Group Viewing Feature
Vincent D'Onofrio in Chained (2012)
Hulu will now allow users that subscribe to its ad-free streaming service to watch shows with friends as part of a new testing feature called Hulu Watch Party. While there are plenty of third-party sites for group video streaming, Hulu’s test marks one of the first times a major streamer has added group watching technology directly into its service.

The Hulu Watch Party feature is available on Hulu.com and will run on PC and Mac computers that have Hulu-compatible browsers. As of now, the feature is not available on any of Hulu’s apps on smart TVs, iPhones or Android.

Up to eight people ages 18 and up can join a virtual room that will synchronize on-screen content and let users chat live. If a viewer falls behind, a “click to catch up” button will immediately let them rejoin the rest of the group. To access the new feature,...

The Rise of Skywalker Axed an Important Subplot About Rey's New Lightsaber
Image
An axed subplot from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been revealed. One of the major plot points in the movie's finale sees Daisy Ridley's Rey revealing her new lightsaber. A yellow one, which is notable as it is a color we hadn't seen on screen in the franchise up to this point. While it came as something of a surprise at the end, there was originally going to be a plotline that would have helped to set this up.

The lightsaber was going to be in more than just one shot at the end. There was going to be a subplot throughout the film showing Rey working on it at her bench, using the Jedi texts as a guide.

— Phil Szostak (@PhilSzostak) May 16, 2020

The tidbit was revealed by Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak. A fan was expressing frustration with the reveal of the lightsaber at the end of the movie,...

Chinese Zodiac: 5 Horror Movies Rabbits Will Love (& 5 They Will Hate)
Vincent D'Onofrio in Chained (2012)
There are a variety of different personality classifications, from horoscopes used in Western zodiac to personality tests like Mbti, all of which have their own way of classifying people based on the traits they possess within themselves. Everyone is unique, but people who believe in these different indicators and definitely feel like their identifier's traits match their own personality get pretty into it.

Related: 10 Horror Movies Based on Real Events

The Chinese zodiac is a classification system that is based on the birth year of the person, not the month they were born or a quiz like some others. There are 12 different animals in the Chinese zodiac with the Rabbit being assigned to people that were born during the year of the Rabbit, including 2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951, 1939, and 1927. Rabbits tend to be kind, determined to reach goals that they've set, and have a serious attention to detail, but are definitely not interested in anything mundane or routine.

Mission: Impossible 7 Stunt Rig Test Photos Leak, But Tom Cruise Isn't Filming Yet
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Mission: Impossible 7 is not quite back on schedule as previously reported this morning. Many assumed shooting had resumed as evidenced by new set photos. Tom Cruise can be seen doing his own stunts again in these leaked images. But Collider has confirmed with the studio that filming is not back on just yet. And what we're seeing here are tests for a stunt rig.

Production on the sequel came to a halt in Italy at the end of February due to the coronavirus pandemic. The entire country is now on lock down as the disease continues to spread. The studio announced that the production would take a three-week break before resuming. And now, it appears that Christopher McQuarrie and crew are almost ready to go, though it's unclear when any actual shooting will resume.

Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog held on to the international box office crown after an estimated $26.8m haul secured primacy for the third weekend as the coronavirus continued to take a toll on cinema-going.

Results for several films suffered in South Korea, the world’s fifth largest market where the recent Oscars success of Parasite had been expected to deliver a major fillip before the virus established the second highest fatality...

Jojo Rabbit: 5 Funniest Things About The Movie (& 5 Most Shocking)
Adolf Hitler
As the satirical coming-of-age story of a Hitler Youth kid whose jingoistic attitude and love of Adolf Hitler (who’s also his kooky imaginary friend) is challenged by a Jewish refugee his mother is hiding in the walls, Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit was a tonal tightrope walk.

New film development fund spells out its criteria
Kristian Brodie
Kristian Brodie.

The film development fund launched by the UK’s Curzon, Madman Entertainment and Benelux distributor Cinéart is seeking filmmaker-driven projects from both established and emerging talent at all stages of the development process.

The Curzon Cm Development Fund is willing to help producers commission treatments or first drafts and to acquire book options as well as supporting projects in late-stage development.

That’s according to British producer Kristian Brodie, the fund’s head of film development based at Curzon’s London HQ.

The $US1.6 million fund aims to support a slate of 16 projects over three years. After that, the partners will have the option to roll into a second five-year plan, exit or be replaced by another partner.

Asked if he intends to focus on specific genres, Brodie tells If: “We’re pretty genre-agnostic here. While we’re unlikely to do an out-and-out slasher teen horror or a broad gross-out comedy,...

Taika Waititi in Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Taika Waititi on Oscars, His ‘Jojo Rabbit’ Journey and Those ‘Star Wars’ Rumors
Taika Waititi in Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
The morning after the Academy Awards, Taika Waititi — the winner of the adapted screenplay Oscar for “Jojo Rabbit” — is drinking a Pedialyte. But however hungover the filmmaker might be, it does not stop him from hamming it up for a photo shoot. He writhes on a hotel room couch, folds himself into an armoire and holds out his Oscar with a look of mock terror on his face, as if he’s warding off a vampire with a cross.

“Jojo Rabbit,” loosely based on Christine Leunens’ 2008 novel “Caging Skies,” tells the story of Johannes Betzler, a sensitive 10-year-old boy (Roman Griffin Davis) in late-World War II Germany. Though he has conjured Adolf Hitler (Waititi) as an imaginary friend, his Nazi aspirations do not match his true character. In fact, he gets his nickname when older Hitler Youth kids pressure him to strangle a bunny, and he can’t. Jojo’s...
