Throughout his 30+-year career, character actor Steven Bauer has been associated with films like Scarface, Thief of Hearts, Running Scared, Gleaming the Cube (a personal favorite), Raising Cain, Primal Fear and Traffic to name a few as well as the hit 80's TV series "Wiseguy."
For his latest project Bauer decided to switch things up a bit and don a crazy fur cap and eye patch to fight werewolves in Universal Studios Home Entertainment's latest classic monster project, Werewolf: The Beast Among Us, which was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD everywhere.
To mark the occasion, Dread Central had the opportunity to briefly chat with Bauer about how his life-long fandom for the Universal Monsters led to his involvement with Werewolf as well as more on his experiences shooting in Transylvania and how one small eye patch caused so many problems on set.
Check out our exclusive interview with Bauer below!

Director: Louis Morneau. Writers: Michael Tabb, Catherine Cyran, and Louis Morneau. Cast: Nia Peeples, Steven Bauer, Stephen Rea, Ed Quinn, Ana Ularu, Rachel Dipillo, Adam Croasdell and Guy Wilson. Universal Pictures has been making werewolf themed thrillers since the early '40s and you would think that they would have perfected this genre by now. Their latest production, Werewolf: The Best Among Us, is definitely not perfect and possibly even mediocre. From the abysmal film Joy Ride 2, director Louis Morneau is no stranger to the direct-to-video style of filmaking. As well, Universal's newest production arm, Universal 1440 Entertainment, is also very familiar with Dtv releases. However, Werewolf: The Beast Among Us is unable to step away from film cliches and the title here seems like a re-imaged Van Helsing (2004). All the characters and situations seem artificial. The story, as it is, follows a group of werewolf hunters in Eastern Europe. A local town has experienced.

"It's like a Syfy Channel movie with extra gore," is precisely how my friend, colleague, and astute schlock aficionado Peter S. Hall described the latest "direct-to-video" horror flick from Universal. "Does it seem like the movie has any connection to the Benicio del Toro remake of The Wolfman?", was my next question, and for that answer I had to watch the movie. Short answer: no. Louis Morneau's Werewolf: The Beast Among Us has no connection to Joe Johnston's The Wolfman. What we have here is a very broad, very obvious, and very low-budget piece of anachronistic period-piece horror silliness that, while peppered with familiar faces and (as Pete mentioned) enthusiastic moments of gruesome gore, amounts to little more than a goofy trip to Romania for a visit with some werewolf hunters that don't actually hunt werewolves all that frequently. The over-plotted and broadly written screenplay is overstuffed with subplots and extraneous characters,...

Universal released Werewolf: The Beast Among Us to Blu-ray/DVD this week and I was given the opportunity to interview a number of people who were involved in the film. For today’s feature, I have my chat with Adam Croasdell, who plays Stefan in the film. Continue on to read about his preparation for the role, throwing knives, and filming in the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler:
What attracted you to Werewolf: The Beast Among Us and the role of Stefan?
Adam Croasdell: I know Catherine Cyran, who mentioned that Universal was working on this Werewolf reboot, and wanted to see if I was interested in getting involved. The character of Stefan was so much fun because he’s a badass. It’s hard to resist characters like that, because you get a lot of stereotypical heroes and villains, and I felt like there was room for an arc with Stefan.

The hunt is on for a good werewolf movie. Again.
Universal Pictures built their foundation on the classic, black and white monster movies like 1931's Dracula and 1941's The Wolf Man, and, after successfully rebooting The Mummy and turning it into a franchise, the studio tried again with The Wolfman in 2010 with less successful results. Mired in production issues, including director Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) stepping in to helm with only three weeks left before shooting began, The Wolfman failed to earn back its $150 million budget. The studio's response? Rebooting the reboot with Werewolf: The Beast Among Us, which has now quietly arrived on DVD and Blu-Ray.
The plot is fairly simple: a 19th Century European village is being terrorized by a werewolf and a doctor's apprentice (Guy Wilson) joins a team of werewolf hunters (Ed Quinn, Steven Bauer, and Adam Croasdell) to bring down the, well,...

Strangers on a Train & Dial M For Murder I received review copies of these two Blu-rays only yesterday afternoon so I've only had a chance to remove the cellophane, but I can't wait to give both a watch and will relay the results once I do. Initially, looking at the features alone, it appears the Blu-ray copy of Strangers on a Train has all the same features as my 2-Disc DVD edition from 2004. It should be noted the "Preview Version" of the film, also known as the British release, which runs two minutes longer, is only presented in standard definition at 480i and not high definition like the final release version, which does still have the included audio commentary. The Dial M for Murder disc lacks the "3D: A Brief History" that was found on the previous DVD release while keeping the "Hitchcock and Dial M" documentary. My assumption here...

Director Louis Morneau discusses Werewolf: The Beast Among Us, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD October 9
Director Louis Morneau is no stranger to the horror genre, after bringing us Bats and Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead. His latest, Werewolf: The Beast Among Us, delves into vampire lore in fantastic ways and features a diverse cast (Steven Bauer, Nia Peeples, Stephen Rea, Ed Quinn). I recently had the chance to speak with the filmmaker over the phone about this period tale centering on a village terrorized by a deadly beast, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD October 9. Here's what he had to say.
I really enjoyed this. After all the vampires and werewolves we're seeing on the big screen now, it's nice to see something that went back to the classic, Universal monsters.
Louis Morneau: Great, thank you.
Just because of how vampires and werewolves are portrayed today, was there any trepidation coming into this?...

Universal will release Werewolf: The Beast Among Us on Blu-ray/DVD tomorrow and I had a chance to talk with the film’s director, Louis Morneau. Continue reading to learn about how this project came together, filming in Romania, and the possibility of a sequel:
Was this a project Universal approached you with or did you come to them?
Louis Morneau: This was something that Michael Tabb wrote and the studio had. They approached me and I was thrilled to do it, being a fan of the classic Universal horror pictures. I pitched a take that made it darker, added dark humor, and some steampunk elements. It basically kept to Michael Tabbs original draft, but I did a couple of quick passes on it and we were right off to Romania.
What was it like to shoot in Romania, where some of these myths had originated? Was this your first time visiting that country?...

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences launched an entire month of celebration in honor of "Universal's Legacy Of Horror." What better way to do that than to add a new movie to the franchise? Werewolf: The Beast Among Us is Universal's latest attempt at giving the tragic hairy monster another chance to shine after the disappointing reaction to "The Wolfman." Don't let the direct-to-dvd tag fool you. This is an entertaining and intriguing addition to the genre of werewolf movies.
I still don't know what there was to be disappointed in with The Wolfman. It was the perfect blend of two of my favorite horror brands: the gory gothic world of Hammer and the classic Universal look of the monster made famous by Jack Pierce in the 1940s. The film is set in a 19th century village, where “a young man studying under a local doctor joins a team of hunters on the trail of a wolf-like creature.” With Universal celebrating its 100th Anniversary, Werewolf is the start of a new chapter of horror in their home video department. Last year when Werewolf was shooting outside Bucharest, I got to visit the set and talk with most of the cast and over the next week I’ll be posting the videos. For today’s interview, I’ve got Nia Peeples.

Universal is jumping back into the werewolf game with a film that looks like a Wolfman sequel, although technically it's not. Werewolf: The Beast Among Us is set to make its DVD and Blu-ray debut on October 9. To get everyone excited for all the wolf-on-human action, the studio has released some new images from the film and an official trailer. We’ve got the goods for you below. Featuring performances from Stephen Rea, Nia Peeples and Guy Wilson (among others), Universal’s newest werewolf flick doesn’t have quite the same level of star power as Wolfman – but that might be to the film’s benefit, seeing as Wolfman suffered at the box office even with the presence of Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins’ names on the poster. This...

But don’t look for it in theaters, because this one is going direct to DVD. Universal Studios has scheduled “Werewolf: The Beast Among Us”, a pseudo sequel of sorts to Joe Johnston’s big-budget 2010 movie “The Wolfman” for Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download on October 9, 2012. It looks like your basic “creature on the loose” movie, the kind that usually shows up on the Syfy Channel on Saturday nights. So hey, if you’re a fan of those type of entertainment, at least you’ll get slightly better production values with this one. That’s something, right? Remember that period, months after the release of Universal's remake of The Wolfman, there were rumblings of a direct-to-dvd sequel? While, yes, there was in fact a werewolf project in development, it had no connection to the redo whatsoever.
Instead, Universal birthed an all-new tale of lycanthropy entitled Werewolf: The Beast Among Us and it's making its way to Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on October 9th.
Louis Morneau (Hitcher II: I've Been Waiting) directs this endeavor which stars Stephen Rea, Steven Bauer, Ed Quinn, Nia Peeples, Guy Wilson, Adam Croasdell and Rachel Dipillo.

Universal Pictures gained in prominence during the 1930s and 40s, in no small part due to their classic monster movies such as 1931's Dracula and 1941's The Wolf Man. With vampires and werewolves finding themselves in more romantic fare in current movies and TV shows, Universal still attempted a re-imagining of The Wolf Man last year, however, after becoming a disappointment at the box office, the movie didn't exactly kick-start a new movie franchise.

Back in July it was announced that Universal had hired Louis Morneau to direct the Untitled Werewolf Thriller that was reworked from the planned sequel to 2010's The Wolf Man. As I noted in my write-up, Morneau isn't generally known for making movies that are released in theaters, rather spending most of his career making direct-to-dvd titles like Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead and The Hitcher II : I.ve Been Waiting. Hence why the newest report about the project isn't all that surprising. Universal has sent out a press release about the new movie - which still doesn't have an official title - announcing the start of production, and has revealed that the film won't be making its way to theaters and, instead, will be making its debut on home video. The news also includes a full cast list, which includes names like Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta, The Crying Game...

Universal Pictures has officially started on production for a new untitled Wolfman movie that will go straight to DVD and Blu-ray. The new werewolf thriller is set to be released on on Halloween of next year 2012. Even though it wont be coming to the big screen there's no way it could be any worse than Universal's last Wolfman film, which was a giant werewolf turd. I was so disappointed in that film. This new movie will in no way be connected with the latter, so it's something that might be worth looking forward to, if your into these kinds of horror films like myself.
Untitled Werewolf Thriller stars Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta, The Crying Game), Steven Bauer (Scarface, Primal Fear), Ed Quinn (True Blood, Eureka), Nia Peeples (Pretty Little Liars, Walker Texas, Ranger), Guy Wilson (Almost Kings, Little Black Book), Adam Croasdell (Supernatural, East Enders) andRachel Dipillo (Law & Order,...

It may or may not be connected to the 2010 debacle that was “The Wolfman”, though it probably is given the film’s setting. Or not.
