Plot: After a military experiment gone wrong, much of the population of Australia has been killed by a chemical weapons discharge. Yet, among the dead, some of the victims have come back “online” where they’re not exactly living, and not exactly dead. An American woman (Daisy Ridley) searching for her husband volunteers to be part of a body retrieval unit but soon goes off the grid.
Review: It’s tough to make an original zombie flick (although hopefully that will soon change). Ever since 28 Days Later reinvigorated the genre back in 2003, we’ve been inundated with movie after movie, not to mention hundreds of episodes of The Walking Dead (and its spin-offs) and others. Into the fray comes the Australian We Bury the Dead, which is an attempt to make an elevated, realistic exploration of the genre. In this one, the undead are never referred to as “zombies...

Well, Ryan Lattanzio beat Anne Thompson predicting last Sunday’s Oscars. That’s because he went with such international favorites as Animated Feature “Flow” and Documentary Feature “No Other Land.” Anne relied too much on the precursors instead of responding to popular surges.
Why did American Palme d’Or winner “Anora” win five Oscars? It had support from every part of the Academy, judging from the rousing cheers from the Dolby Theatre Sunday night.
Ahead on this week’s episode of “Screen Talk,” Ryan and Anne debate why Mikey Madison won Best Actress. She was young and ingenues are in favor, said Ryan. Older women Demi Moore and Fernanda Torres were close and “Anora” had coattails, said Anne.
We also debate the merits of the show, and both agree that newbie Conan O’Brien was an affably effective host, and that the writing was strong, even if some of the musical tributes were weak.

Whether you’re riding into the new year on your high horse or calmly preparing to walk into the sea, 2025 is a turning point. There’s no genre that tells us who we are or what we’re made of like this one, and the past twelve months have offered audiences a slew of scary stories full of shocks and surprises that were mostly open to interpretation.
Not all of us found powerful metaphors for social change in popular titles, and plenty of terrifying efforts flew under the radar in the genre’s generally high-grossing landscape. There were enough abortion analogies released last spring to merit their own ranking And there’s a reason “MaXXXine” — the definitive film of Brat Girl Summer! — didn’t make many year-end lists. Created by Tyler Perry of the Madea movie franchise, Ruthless is a spinoff of another Perry series, The Oval. Ruthless is a much more harrowing tale, following the cult known as the Rakudushi. In the beginning of the series, Ruth Truesdale (Melissa L. Williams), an ardent follower, kidnaps her own daughter for the Rakudushi. However, after suffering a ritual sexual assault, Ruth makes plans to leave the cult with anyone else she can convince.
The series first premiered in May 2020, and there have been four more seasons since. Each season of Ruthless is broken up into two parts, with some parts coming months after the first part. Season 5 part 1 premiered in August 2024 with eight episodes and now season 5 part 2 is expected to tie up all the loose strands of the show.

The world wasn’t ready to appreciate Call of Duty Ghosts when it first released; it isn’t now either. There’s been a lot of hate around it for the game for several years, and communities are rife with comments that aren’t really heartwarming.
It feels like they were paid well to spread hate. None of them appear genuine. I know the series has gone bad, but Ghosts was always on top of everything. How can you even think of something bad when it’s the manifestation of Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley? People need to appreciate the fact that Ghost came back.

Making ‘Inside Out 2’ Was A Nightmare for the Animators Who Were Promptly Laid Off for Their Efforts
You’d think Pixar would be throwing a big party to celebrate Inside Out 2, now the highest-grossing animated film of all time. But no one is in the mood to whoop it up inside the company, which laid off 14 percent of its workforce in May just ahead of the movie’s premiere. That means many people responsible for making Inside Out 2 are out of a job.
Before the workers were let go, there was plenty of anxiety among the craftspeople making the movie. “I think for a month or two, the animators were working seven days a week,” a source told IGN. “Ridiculous amounts of production workers, just people being tossed into jobs they’d never really done before. It was horrendous.”
“The internal culture of Pixar right now is really rough,” a former employee said. “There is just an incredible amount of people who are like, ‘I can’t do this anymore.

Pixar has been one of the leading studios in family animation for about three decades now, and when a new Pixar feature is announced, animation aficionados take notice. Now, the beloved animation studio has announced a new film on its upcoming slate: Hoppers. According to Deadline, Pixar announced its newest film, Hoppers, at D23, with the movie telling a sci-fi tale about a man and a beaver swapping brains. The film stars Jon Hamm as the man who befalls such a predicament and Bobby Moynihan as the beaver.

Although little else was revealed about Hoppers, a piece of concept art was also shown. And it no doubt depicts the animated chaos of this body-swap movie perfectly. The concept art shows one of the scientists chasing down the beaver as a boy sits on some sort of futuristic contraption.

Riley’s back – and she’s brought in billions at the box office! The highly-anticipated sequel Inside Out 2 has taken the world by storm since hitting theaters this summer. It’s now the highest-grossing movie of the whole year globally.
After just 5 weeks, Inside Out 2 has racked up over $1.3 billion worldwide. That makes it the only movie this year to pass the billion-dollar mark. And it’s not slowing down yet – the film is still rolling out in places like Japan.
No surprise this sequel did so well, says analyst Paul D. He notes how the first Inside Out appealed to such a wide range of ages. Kids identify with Riley growing up, while adults appreciate how real the emotions feel. Its huge opening weekend saved what was shaping up to be a dull summer for movies.

One of the highest-grossing animated productions of all time, Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” has already reached a key milestone: $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
A substantial chunk of that impressive total came from Spanish-speaking Latin America, where the film is known as “IntensaMente 2.” The title used in those countries literally means “Intensely,” but it’s also a play on the words “Intense” and “Mind.” Meanwhile, the name in Spain, “Del Revés,” is a less ingenious, verbatim translation of “Inside Out.” Dubs and titles for most movies, and definitely for Disney films, differ in Spain and Latin America.
In Mexico, a country with a long-standing movie-going culture, “Inside Out 2” has already amassed a whopping $81.8 million (around 1.5 billion pesos), surpassing “Avengers: Endgame.” The animated sequel is now the second most profitable film of all time in Mexico, only behind “The Super Mario Bros. Inside Out 3 may introduce new emotions, including grief and love, connected to the main five emotions. Nostalgia's early introduction in Inside Out 2 hints at more undiscovered emotions in Riley's brain. Developing existing emotions and their relationships with the main five is crucial for Inside Out 3's storyline.
A potential Inside Out 3 can introduce new emotions, which are entirely possible thanks to a key detail in Inside Out 2. The Inside Out sequel introduces new emotions in Riley's brain just as she begins puberty. These emotions include Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui. Inside Out 2 got two of the new emotions wrong, but Envy and Ennui still work and play essential roles in Riley's head. Furthermore, Riley still grows as a person as she enters a different stage in her life. Her brain adapts to new emotions as she grows.

Everywhere Cora (Megan Stalter) goes, she finds herself in situations that beg others to ask one simple yet pointed question: “What is wrong with you?” Cora may brush off such flippant passive-aggressive digs at her wellbeing and overall sense of composure, but it’s soon clear that Hannah Pearl Utt’s wry comedy “Cora Bora” will forcefully (and hilariously) get this aspiring musician to reckon with the life she’s trying to build for herself in Los Angeles, away from her family, her girlfriend and a past she’ll soon no longer be able to run away from.
Life in L.A. doesn’t seem to be going well for Cora. In between daytime gigs at mostly empty coffee shops and late night gigs at even emptier bars, her solo career looks to be floundering. With titles like “Dreams Are Stupid” and “Don’t Wanna Hear You Anymore,” her embittered...

In his recent BAFTA TV Awards acceptance speech for best male performance in a comedy, British comic Mawaan Rizwan recalled a conversation with his therapist earlier that week about how he “needed to stop relying on external forms of validation… so, bad timing!”
But, just about a month after taking home the award (over the likes of David Tennant) for his BBC sitcom “Juice,” it seems like that validation is here to stay. The number of movies about gifted youngsters sacrificing the traditional teen experience in favor of artistic perfection or academic excellence is immeasurable. "Stick It" peered into the world of Olympic hopeful gymnastics, "Whiplash" pulled back the curtain of elite musicianship, and "Bring It On" turned the world of competitive cheerleading into one of the greatest teen films ever made. This is all to say, coming-of-age stories in this territory are well-tread, so finding a way to stand out among so many all-time greats is a massive undertaking. Fortunately, for D.W. A sequel to the 2015 Pixar film Inside Out was inevitable, since new emotions would accompany Riley into adolescence. Actor Amy Poehler, who voices Joy, believes there is potential for more movies in the animated franchise.
"I just think that they should make these films like Seven Up, every couple of years in Riley's life," Poehler told Empire, referring to the 1964 documentary film series that chronicled the lives of nine people (four women and 10 men) at various ages. "A young adult, a young mother, and I think a middle-aged person," she added. "Everyone's having these very distinct new emotions that are showing up all the time."

Inside Out 2 will introduce Anxiety as one of Riley’s new emotions and rather appropriately, Pixar looked at Uncut Gems as a reference.
Inside Out may very well be one of the finest animated films of the last few decades and Pixar is currently busy getting a sequel, Inside Out 2, ready for release in June.
There’s a lot of pressure on Pixar and director Kelsey Mann to match Pete Docter’s brilliant first film, but the trailer looks pretty good. Adding to the hype, Polygon reports that the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems was one of the inspirations for Inside Out 2.
Polygon visited Pixar and not only got a good look at the upcoming sequel, but also chatted to many of the people working on it. Inside Out 2 will follow Riley as she enters her teen years and experiences a whole roster of new emotions.

When Pixar released "Inside Out" back in 2015, the studio introduced us to five core emotions inside the mind of Riley, an 11-year old girl leaving her hometown of Minnesota and moving with her parents to a new home in San Francisco. That came with a lot of complicated feelings, and the emotions of Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling) helped Riley worked through all the hurdles, allowing the feelings to learn something about themselves and the girl they've nurtured over the years.
"Inside Out 2" is about to make Riley's life even more complicated by introducing some new emotions. Though Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are all back, they have to deal with the arrival of Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser). Funnily enough, some of those emotions were actually considered...

Kobi Libii’s debut feature The American Society of Magical Negroes starts on a promising note. Aren, a spindly and awkward artist (an endearing Justice Smith) loiters near a yarn sculpture in a gallery. He seems lost in the sea of roving patrons and bustling waiters. It takes a second for us to realize that Aren created the meditative wool work and is struggling to sell it to the mostly white collectors attending this group show. They find the abstract piece illegible; they repeatedly ask about the material (“Is it … yarn?”) while maintaining a distance. These brief encounters are a clever jab by Libii at a visual art world historically enamored of Black figurative artists.
Minor drama ensues after Aren is mistaken for a server by a patron and unceremoniously fired by his gallerist. Before he can think straight, the dejected artist finds himself touring the gothic halls of The American Society of Magical Negroes,...

The USC Libraries announced the winners for the 36th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.
For the second year in a row, “Slow Horses” took home the prize for episodic series; Cord Jefferson won the 2024 award for film adaptation; both he and the author of the novel he adapted, Percival Everett, were in attendance. Jefferson thanked Everett for trusting him with his 2001 novel, which he felt was written just for him. “He has managed to mine my novel for the material he needed to make this film,” said Everett, who teaches at USC. “And then I sat back and did nothing. So good job. Thank you.”

The finalists for the 36th USC Libraries Script Awards, honoring the most accomplished films and episodic series adaptations, have been announced. Among the selected are “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things,” all top-tier contenders for Oscar attention. Ava DuVernay’s drama “Origin” was a surprise entry in the lineup, making her the second Black woman recognized by the awards body (the first was Dee Rees for 2017’s “Mudbound”).
A strong bellwether for the Oscars’ best adapted screenplay category, previous Scripter winners that have matched the Academy in the last decade include “12 Years a Slave” (2013), “The Imitation Game” (2014), “The Big Short” (2015), “Moonlight” (2016), “Call Me by Your Name” (2017), “Nomadland” (2020) and “Women Talking” (2022). Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” (2019) is the only Scripter-eligible film to win the Academy Award without being nominated by the organization.
One of the notable omissions from the group is Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” but according to the awards team,...

Mike Flanagan's shows feature self-references, nods to classic literature, and easter eggs to create an interconnected narrative. The "bent-neck lady" twist in The Haunting of Hill House explores the cyclical and intertwined nature of time and offers an explanation for The Shining's confusing ending. Hill House and the Overlook Hotel share parallels, such as haunted rooms and the idea that those who die in them become fixtures of the haunting.
The scariest twist from a Mike Flanagan show might have offered a clever explanation for the ambiguous ending of a 54-year-old Stephen King movie adaptation. Mike Flangan's work brims with references and easter eggs to his own work. For instance, The Fall of the House of Usher not only features several references to Edgar Allan Poe's poems and short stories but also drops subtle nods to the director's own movies. Similar easter eggs can be found in Flanagan's Hush and Gerald Game,...

Riley Diego, from 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, might have a new love interest after his breakup with Violet Tuyet. He may be dating another cast member from the show, Kim Menzies, as they were seen interacting on Instagram Live and spending time together. Fans have mixed feelings about this rumored couple, but some hope to see them on the next season of 90 Day: The Single Life.
Riley Diego seemingly has a new woman in his life after his split from Violet Tuyet, and it happens to be a 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days cast member. Riley is a 48-year-old man from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, who starred in Before the 90 Days season 6. Riley had dealt with major heartbreak in his past where one girlfriend had cheated on him and another ghosted him.
