Nicholas Sparks writes the kind of books you're likely to find on your mom's nightstand. His romances have captivated (mostly women) readers around the world for nearly 30 years, with over 130 million copies sold according to his website. Many of his novels follow the same formula, but clearly, he's found a winning one: stories of star-crossed lovers, often set in picturesque coastal American small towns, where a profound and enduring bond is tested by a tragic twist. Few authors can claim that all of their books have reached #1 on the New York Times Best Sellers list.
Nicholas Sparks' stories didn't make the leap to the silver screen until 1999 with the adaptation of his second novel, "Message in a Bottle." Star Kevin Costner fits perfectly into Sparks' universe, portraying the all-American, rugged man — stoic and guarded, yet warm. We've seen Kevin Costner play similar roles in some of his best movies, including...

Content Partners Capital, the newly launched private capital division of Content Partners, and Relativity Media have closed a strategic growth financing, a move they say marks a major step in Cpc’s mission to offer “bespoke capital solutions to entertainment and media businesses” while supporting the transformation of a well-known Hollywood name.
Cpc’s first investment will bolster Relativity Media’s capital base for acquiring new films for theatrical distribution and help it expand its film and television library, acquire IP and build out its independent film and TV slate. The size of the investment wasn’t disclosed.
CEO Lex Miron said Relativity intends to spend approximately $100 million acquiring domestic film rights over the next three to five years. The plans is to release 4-6 projects within the next year, and 7-10 projects within the next two years.

The Relativity Media banner may conjure memories of the Ryan Kavanaugh era. There was that data-driven formula to “predict” box office success and minimize risk, the highs of hits like Bridesmaids and Mamma Mia!, the lows of the likes of Masterminds, the nine-figure financing rounds and ultimately the bankruptcy filings. (The Kavanaugh quote “Am I sorry? Of course I am,” once graced the cover of The Hollywood Reporter as the company crumbled ten years ago.)
Since Relativity Media emerged from bankruptcy in 2018 it hasn’t been affiliated with Kavanaugh and has kept a lower profile than its heyday. Its ownership group is titled UltraV Holdings LLC and includes former Bally Technologies chief David Robbins, Miron and funds managed by CEO Stephen Ketchum’s Sound Point Capital.

As of this writing, author Nicholas Sparks has written 23 novels, and every single one of them has been a New York Times Bestseller. His first novel, "The Passing," was published in 1985, and he immediately established himself as one of the world's preeminent pop-romance writers, authoring broad, tragic stories about unquenched longing, suffering lovelorn women, and flawless rescue studs. His 1999 novel "A Walk to Remember" was inspired by the tragic death of his younger sister, killed by cancer at age 33. Sparks' novels, mostly set in North Carolina, are known for their placid, pastoral tones, sweeping melodrama, and weepy endings.
Hollywood got their hooks into Sparks in 1999 when they adapted his book "Message in a Bottle" into a notable hit starring Kevin Costner. That film made $118 million on a $30 million budget, and major film studios seem to have found a winning formula. Since then, 11 additional Sparks novels have been adapted into films,...

Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly going to star in a supernatural romantic thriller, a collaboration between M Night Shyamalan and novelist Nicholas Sparks.
Here’s a slightly unusual bit of news for you. Months after the release of his latest opus, Trap, M Night Shyamalan is about to make another thriller, this time starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Nothing too unusual about that, you might think. But in a cross-media twist, the project will involve Shyamalan writing the screenplay and Nicholas Sparks – independently, we might add – writing the novel.
According to Deadline, which has the exclusive, the project is a ‘supernatural romantic thriller’, and both Shyamalan and Sparks will base their respective works on the same ‘original love story’.
Both Shyamalan and Sparks are, of course, highly successful in their respective fields. Shyamalan’s signature film arguably remains The Sixth Sense, released in 1999, but he’s also enjoyed success with such films as Unbreakable,...

Although Netflix's 1992 unfolds like a typical crime thriller, it reels viewers in with its distinct characters and the performances of the actors who play them. Serving as an addition to Netflix's catalog of compelling Spanish TV shows, 1992 primarily focuses on a vicious serial killer and two investigators who set out to find the truth about his identity. Many aspects of 1992's overarching storyline are predictable because they struggle to rise above the well-worn tropes of the genre.
However, the series thrives when it focuses primarily on the chemistry between its dynamic protagonists, Amparno and Richi. Even though their characterizations seem derivative of other duos who have appeared in several other similar detective dramas, the actors who play them do a brilliant job of capturing their struggles and vulnerabilities. Since the primary cast members and characters play a crucial role in making 1992 more compelling and watchable, many viewers may be...

Nicholas Sparks movies are known for bringing audiences to tears and often tackle intense storylines like terminal illness and classism. High-profile stars have used Sparks adaptations as career jumping-off points, but interest in these films has waned over the years. Despite mixed reviews, some Sparks movies like The Notebook stand out as quintessential romance epics with memorable chemistry and quotes.
Since the late 1990s, Nicholas Sparks movies have become a recognizable subgenre within romance films. Eleven of Sparks's novels have been made into feature films, and these formulaic movies are known for reducing audiences to tears. Outside the fact each adaptation is based on a novel written by the author, several hallmarks separate a cheesy but classic Nicholas Sparks movie from just any romance film. North Carolina often serves as the backdrop of these movies, as Sparks resides in the southern state, and they often tackle intense storylines including terminal illness,...

Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya McQuoid may have met an untimely end at the end of season 2, but that doesn’t mean that HBO’s The White Lotus is done with bringing characters back from other seasons. Natasha Rothwell, who played White Lotus employee and Tanya’s confidant Belinda Lindsey, is set to return for the show’s upcoming third season. And according to HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys, her return is only the beginning.
Per Bloys’ interview with Variety, White Lotus creator Mike White is planning to connect future seasons to each other by bringing back one cast member each season. Bloys is “already excited about who is going to come back for Season 4. It really is a fun model that Mike has set up.”

When it comes to the best romance movies on Netflix, there is such a great mix of originals as well as some of the best romances in movie history. These movies also traverse the spectrum from romantic comedies to both romances with happy and sad endings, bringing smiles, tears, or in some cases, both. When it comes to streaming services like Netflix, it is also hard to tell when movies will drop off the service, and at times it is hard to scroll through and find the best movies in any specific genre. The good news is, for romances, there are plenty to choose from.
The best romance movies on Netflix include now-classic love stories with stars like Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Robert Redford, alongside newer movies starring up-and-comers. These include teenage coming-of-age stories, tales of older men and women looking for love, and quite a few comedies with a strong romantic subplot.

The Bourne movie franchise will always make Matt Damon spring to mind, as the titular lead, but there are plenty of famous faces many will have forgotten also starred in the Bourne movies. Starting with The Bourne Identity, the first Bourne movie was released in 2002 and is loosely based on Robert Ludlum’s novel of the same name. The whole Bourne franchise follows Jason Bourne (Damon) who has lost his memory but slowly figures out he is a spy, and his old employers want to get rid of him. Matt Damon played Jason Bourne in the first three movies, before returning in the fifth and final movie, Jason Bourne.
With such a big franchise, it is unsurprising there are plenty of familiar faces cast in the Bourne movies which may have been forgotten. Characters such as Julia Stiles’ Nicky Parsons and Joan Allen’s Pamela Landy appear in multiple Bourne...

Five Christmas films dominate the VOD charts, led by “The Grinch” (Universal/3.99), challenged only by “Black Adam” (Warner Bros. Discovery/19.99). However, leading the Netflix chart is “Prisoners,” a 10-year-old Warner Bros. thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal that also served as Denis Villeneuve’s English-language debut.
Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio,” one of Netflix’s high-end holiday originals, ranks #3, behind Sony’s “Bullet Train.”
“Grinch,” along with “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Universal/3.99) and “Elf” (Wbd/3.99), placed on all three charts. Particularly impressive is their showing on Vudu, which calculates by revenue.
Two other holiday titles — “The Holiday” (Sony/3.99) and 47-minute 1964 TV special “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” — also have a single listing. They join “Black Adam,” “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount/4.99), and “Ticket to Paradise” (Universal/19.99) among those making all charts.
New are “She Said” (Universal/19.99). Despite its lack of theatrical interest, it’s #2 at Vudu as well as #8 at iTunes.

It’s almost the holiday season, which means that millions of travelers will soon find themselves in distant family members’ living rooms while Netflix blares on the TV. What Netflix shows and movies will be featured on those television sets? We now have a better idea as Netflix has released its list of new releases for December 2022.
It’s safe to say that movies are set to dominate this month. There is the usual holiday fare like Scrooge: A Christmas Carol on Dec. 2 but overall Netflix looks to be trying to end the year strong with some big ticket titles. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio arrives on Dec. 9. That will be followed by Rian Johnson’s next Benoit Blanc detective story, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, on Dec. 2. The end of the month closes out with White Noise, Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of the classic Don DeLillo novel, on Dec.

When Netflix severed ties with Kevin Spacey after he was accused of sexual misconduct, one of the projects that got dropped was the actor’s Gore Vidal biographical drama, entitled “Gore.” The film, directed and co-written by Michael Hoffman (“The Best of Me”) from Jay Parini’s book “Empire of Self, A Life of Gore Vidal,” wrapped production in Italy just a few weeks before the first allegation was made against Spacey. Some have wondered if anyone would release the Spacey-fronted feature, but newly released script details make it clear that seems unlikely to ever happen.
According to an in-depth report from Buzzfeed, “Gore” includes “several scenes that would almost certainly strike audiences as difficult to absorb given Spacey’s involvement. Some scenes explore Gore’s complicated and unorthodox attitudes toward transactional sex and sex with very young men, for example, and a graphic scene involves two transgender sex workers.

Chicago – I’ll be the first to admit that I am not the target audience for these stock young adult romance novels. Aside from the odd fascination and romanticization of teenage death and terminal illness, these stories feel trite and much closer to fantasy than anything real or plausible. This is what the film “Everything, Everything” brings to the table, which essentially translates to Nothing, Nothing.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
I am patient and empathetic. I always try to understand another person’s point of view or outlook especially when it doesn’t mirror my own. Going into every film with an open mind is the only way to truly open yourself to the experience it is trying to impart. I didn’t know anything when going into “Everything, Everything” but it soon became clear that I actually knew exactly how the story was going to progress after the first ten minutes. This...

D.J. Caruso had a bit of a moment in the mid-2000s where it appeared he was going to be the hot new director to watch, directing Disturbia and Eagle Eye and being attached to film adaptations of Y: The Last Man and Preacher that never came to pass. But he ended up helming I Am Number Four in 2011 and his career took a big hit. He's on the rise again with xXx: The Return of Xander Cage under his belt for a release next year, but before that, we'll see him tackle a horror movie called The Disappointments Room that he co-wrote with Prison Break star Wentworth Miller.
Unfortunately, it looks like a by-the-numbers haunted house movie that treads ground we've seen covered hundreds of times before. Unless there's a huge twist or mega surprise brewing here, I can already tell I'll be skipping this one. To be fair,...

At this point, one has to wonder if author Nicholas Sparks’ novels and their film adaptations are assembled overnight by elves in a workshop somewhere in North Carolina. Sparks has had 11 of his stories made into films, the first being 1999’s Message in a Bottle starring Kevin Costner, Robin Wright Penn and Paul Newman. Sparks’ most culturally and commercially significant book-to-screen installment was 2004’s The Notebook (No. 3 of 11) starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. It’s been mostly downhill since, with 2014’s The Best of Me and 2015’s The Longest Ride providing cannon fodder for critics and performing … Continue reading →

This week another film maker tackles a subject frequently explored in movies of the heart, perhaps best labeled the romance (but not a “rom-com”, though there’s a smidgen of humor). It’s the old “lost love” plot, where the story’s focus character (often nearing those “twilight” years) remembers his first real infatuation and heartbreak, usually eliciting pangs of remorse or regret. Popular author Nicholas Sparks has made this a standard theme in film adaptations of his work from The Notebook to The Best Of Me. Now this new release hails from across the pond, France to be precise. Unlike those previously mentioned big screen “soaps” it is a more somber meditation when the film’s protagonist’s thoughts recall My Golden Days.
Those sun drenched days belong to a scholar working for France’s department of ministry, Paul Dedalus (Mathieu Amalric). We encounter him as he prepares to leave Tajikistan for Paris.

Sure, it's hard to guess which movies will be big enough draws to pull people away from their living rooms on Super Bowl weekend. But the studios were wrong about nearly every new offering this weekend, and so were the box office analysts.
The only new release that performed as expected was the Coen Brothers' period Hollywood spoof "Hail, Caesar!", debuting in second place with an estimated $11.4 million. That's pretty weak, even for filmmakers as cultish as the Coens. Yet it was still far better than this weekend's other new wide releases, "The Choice" and "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" -- both of which opened well below expectations. It's enough to make you wonder if moviegoers have lost interest in both Nicholas Sparks and zombies.
Sparks, the novelist whose tearjerking romances have been adapted into such hits as "The Notebook," used to be one of Hollywood's most reliable brands, generating 11 movies over the past 17 years.

“The Choice” is Nicholas Sparks‘ 11th book to be adapted to the screen — and critics agree that “they should have stopped at No. 10.” Currently holding a score of 6 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, “The Choice” overtook 2014’s “The Best Of Me” on Friday to become the lowest-rated Sparks movie. Critics say that the film is shallow, overlong and best watched with a “barf bag nearby.” One critic even goes so far as to say that “The Choice,” starring Benjamin Walker and Teresa Palmer in the leads, is “filmed like an ad for erectile-dysfunction medication.” Also Read: 'The Choice' Review: Nicholas Sparks' Latest Adaptation Won't Set.

2016 is five weeks old, so the new model is rolling off the assembly line. You might think I’m referring to an automobile company like Ford or Lincoln. Stephen King is still king of the horror/suspense novels, John Grisham has the legal thrillers, and Nicholas Sparks is best known for the swoony, sweeping romance paperbacks that fill the spinner racks at airport gift shops and often protrude from the tops of canvas beach bags. His best sellers quickly grabbed the attention of the movie studios, and almost a dozen have been translated to the big screen (easy to see why since they don’t require costly CGI action set pieces or big name superstars since Sparks is the name that draws ’em in). Back to the assembly line reference, there’s been a...
