The awards ceremony of the 14th Taiwan International Documentary Festival (Tidf) took place on May 16. 42 nominated films in the Asian Vision Competition, International Competition, Taiwan Competition and 14 works shortlisted for the Tidf Visionary Award, an award for promoting sinophone documentaries, competed for 11 awards.

The Programme Director Wood Lin says this is his 7th time participating in Tidf's programming since 2010, and a persistent self-pursuit for incarnating the spirit of documentary through curating has made each version more challenging than imagined. He also thanks all the filmmakers at the ceremony for devoting their lives to and fully engaging in filmmaking; their works are wonderful gifts that introduce the complexity and beauty of the world to the audience in Taiwan. He then quoted this year's Outstanding Contribution Award recipient, Chang Chao-tang: “We exist, because people who remember us”, saying that Tidf also exists because all who participate, remembers it.

Overlord is a dark fantasy light novel series written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin. It focuses on a man who was transported into a Dmmorpg (Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) called Yggdrasil after its servers were shut down.

The series has attracted many fans for its in-depth narrative as well as the thin line between good and evil. Meanwhile, the protagonist continues to act as his character, Ainz Ool Gown. Luckily, even those who have finished the series have plenty of similar anime to check out to scratch that itch left behind by Overlord.

Yidff 2023 presented a total of 130 films across 11 categories. In the two competition sections, International Competition and New Asian Currents, there were 2,134 entries from 120 countries and regions, out of which 15 films were selected for the International Competition and 19 films for New Asian Currents, in a total of 34 films.

The opening film following the opening ceremony was the Asian premiere of Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus, directed by Sora Neo, which captured the last solo concert of the musician who passed away in March 2023. Screenings were packed, with many sold out not only for the popular competition films, but also for screenings of the Special Programs, a particularly renowned feature of Yidff.
