Brie Larson, Jack Quaid, Lily Collins, Henry Golding Star in Amazon Comedy 'Close Personal Friends'
Image
Brie Larson, Jack Quaid, and two major stars join Amazon's new comedy, Close Personal Friends. The actress burst onto the scene in 2015 with Room, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, though she is best known for playing Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting in Captain Marvel and reprising the role for Avengers: Endgame and The Marvels.

On the other hand, Quaid is best known as Hughie Campbell in Amazon Prime's satirical superhero series The Boys. He has also made the jump to movies, playing roles in Scream (2022) and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, and has since taken on starring roles in the sci-fi thriller Companion and action comedy Novocaine (both 2025). Now, the two stars are teaming up for a new comedy.

Amazon MGM Studios has announced that Brie Larson, Jack Quaid, Lily Collins, and Henry Golding will star in their new comedy, Close Personal Friends.

The Boys Star Reflects On Being Typecast As The "CW Pretty Boy" After Hit Teen Drama: "I Felt Like I Was In The Wilderness"
Image
Chace Crawford, who is best known as Kevin Moskowitz in The Boys, has recently spoken out about his past career struggles, specifically after starring in Gossip Girl. While Crawford had a couple of credits under his belt prior to the teen drama series, portraying Nate Archibald in the CW’s Gossip Girl was what truly launched his career. Nate was Serena’s ex-boyfriend and one of the biggest heartthrobs in Gossip Girl, and throughout the show, audiences fell in love with the iconic womanizer.

But sadly, Crawford’s success in the show didn’t have the impact on his career that he expected. In a recent episode of the Good Guys podcast (via Variety), Crawford discussed how his fame as Nate Archibald affected him after the show ended nearly 13 years ago:

"I felt like I was in the wilderness for years after [Gossip Girl], because as big of a show as it was,...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Bonnie And Clyde
Image
The real Bonnie and Clyde may have died in 1933, but the legend of the couple's crime spree lives on in the form of songs, stories, and one groundbreaking movie. Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" took Hollywood by storm when it hit theaters in 1967, generating controversy for its on-screen violence and sensuality -- and kick-starting nationwide conversations about who deserves to be the subject of a movie. While film fans still talk about these topics today, the movie's brutal final shootout feels mild compared to modern blood-soaked movie scenes.

Still, "Bonnie and Clyde" is a fantastic film, thanks in large part to its great cast. Warren Beatty plays cocky Clyde Barrow to Faye Dunaway's initially innocent Bonnie Parker, while actors Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman, and Estelle Parsons round out the Barrow gang. A young Gene Wilder made his big screen debut as one of Clyde's hostages, while Denver...

Bo Goldman, Oscar-Winning Cowriter of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,’ Dies at 90
Bo Goldman
Veteran screenwriter Bo Goldman, who won Oscars for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and Jonathan Demme’s “Melvin and Howard,” died Tuesday at the age of 90, his son-in-law, director Todd Field told The New York Times on Wednesday.

Goldman landed the job of adapting Ken Kesey’s book (along with Lawrence Hauben) after his script for “Shoot the Moon” impressed “Cuckoo’s Nest” director Miloš Forman.

Danny DeVito, who had a small role in “Cuckoo’s Nest,” told TheWrap, “Working with Bo was a dream. It was an honor knowing him.”

After winning a second Oscar for “Melvin and Howard,” he became one of the few screenwriters — along with Francis Ford Coppola and Billy Wilder — to take home Academy Awards for both original and adapted screenplay. He was nominated a third time for his script for Martin Brest’s “Scent of a Woman.”

Alden Ehrenreich Shot His Short ‘Shadow Brother Sunday’ on Film So He Wouldn’t Disappoint Christopher Nolan: ‘I Would Be Banned’
Alden Ehrenreich
Alden Ehrenreich has inhabited the role of Han Solo and, earlier this year, survived an encounter with the “Cocaine Bear.” But now he is venturing into even more uncharted territory, by writing, directing and starring in his very own short film, “Shadow Brother Sunday.”

The short concerns a down-on-his-luck brother (Ehrenreich) who, while attending a family celebration for his younger, successful actor brother (Nick Robinson), contemplates the ultimate betrayal – stealing his brother’s computer to sell to the paparazzi. From this scenario, Ehrenreich builds a rich world of uneasy family dynamics and long-simmering emotions. And it turns out he’s just as talented behind the camera as he is in front of it.

TheWrap spoke to Ehrenreich on the eve of the short film’s world premiere as part of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York; it’ll play throughout the week and is very much worth checking out.

Anyone who went into this weekend wondering if Dick Tracy knows how to use Zoom now has a definitive answer.

Late Friday night, Turner Classic Movies aired a mysterious new program called “Dick Tracy Special: Tracy Zooms In,” which features Warren Beatty reprising his role as the iconic detective from his 1990 film of the same name. Donning the character’s signature yellow coat and hat, Tracy participates in a Zoom call with TCM hosts Ben Mankiewicz and Leonard Maltin to give an update on his life and express his displeasure with Beatty’s film.

The three men watch several clips from the film together before they decide to call Beatty to settle Tracy’s complaints once and for all. Beatty then joins the call as himself, where he eventually reconciles with Tracy and they agree to have a more collaborative relationship in the event Beatty makes a sequel.

Golden Globes nominee profile: Catherine O’Hara (‘Schitt’s Creek’) finally earns first career bid
Image
It finally happened. After a career full of egregious (and possibly cruel) snubs, Catherine O’Hara has been nominated by the Golden Globes. Her bid arrives at the perfect time, as she’s just coming off an Emmy victory for playing Moira Rose in the final season of Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek.” Does this nom make up for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association overlooking the veteran actress for her iconic roles in “A Mighty Wind,” “Best in Show,” “Home Alone” and “Temple Grandin,” among others? Not necessarily, but as Moira might proclaim, “One must champion oneself and say, ‘I am ready for this!'”

At the upcoming Golden Globes, O’Hara faces off against Lily Collins (“Emily in Paris”), Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”), Elle Fanning (“The Great”) and Jane Levy (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) in the race for Best TV Comedy Actress.

Golden Globes nominee profile: If Jane Levy (‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’) prevails, she will continue 2 winning trends
Image
Jane Levy scored her first Golden Globe nomination this year for her eponymous role in “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” the latest in a long line of actors to be nominated for a TV musical and also continuing the trend for women headlining new comedy series. The Globes have nominated her for Season 1 of NBC’s musical comedy series, which aired from January to May 2020, while the show’s second season, which premiered last month, will be eligible for next year’s Globes.

In “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” Levy stars as Zoey Clarke, who can see and hear strangers, friends and family unknowingly sing about their intimate feelings to her through song and dance. It’s an emotional roller-coaster of a show that has become a hit with audiences. It wears its heart on its sleeve, especially when characters break out into the emotional musical numbers that highlight each episode.

Golden Globes nominee profile: Elle Fanning gives career-best performance on ‘The Great’
Image
Hulu’s “The Great” was one of the rare bright spots of 2020, and it’s all thanks to Elle Fanning‘s career-best performance as Catherine the Great. Equal parts laugh-out-loud comedy and riveting drama, the period program from Tony McNamara was recognized at the Emmys in writing and directing, but Fanning was strangely snubbed. Thankfully, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association righted that wrong when they nominated “The Great” for series, actress (Fanning) and actor (Nicholas Hoult).

Golden Globes nominee profile: Kaley Cuoco (‘The Flight Attendant’) soars in landing her first nomination
Image
After landing her first role almost three decades ago, Kaley Cuoco has finally earned her first Golden Globe nominations for playing the titular character on HBO Max’s “The Flight Attendant” as well as for serving as an executive producer on the series. While it is her first nomination at the Globes, she has gotten recognition from other major organizations in the past. Most notable of those were two bids for Comedy Supporting Actress at the Critics Choice TV Awards for “The Big Bang Theory,” where she tied with Eden Sher (“The Middle”) for the win in 2013.

Cuoco finds herself taking on four other leading ladies in Best TV Comedy Actress who are all also looking for their first win at the Globes: Lily Collins (“Emily in Paris”), Elle Fanning (“The Great”), Jane Levy (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) and Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”). Golden Globes nominee profile: Lily Collins (‘Emily in Paris’) brings a joie de vivre to Netflix hit
Image
“Emily in Paris” became a big hit for Netflix when the first season dropped in October, thanks in part to the star turn at its center by Lily Collins. As the eponymous Emily, Collins is in full rom-com mode as a spirited young American woman adjusting to life in Paris and falling in love in the process. Viewers quickly binged “Emily in Paris” like devouring a box of macarons and turned it into an unexpected success, sustaining enough buzz to earn two Golden Globe nominations — one for Collins and another for the show in Best Comedy/Musical Series.

In the Best Comedy/Musical Actress category, Collins has some fierce competition that includes Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”), Elle Fanning (“The Great”), Jane Levy (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) and Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”). Maybe Warren Beatty Had It Right: ‘Rules Don’t Apply’
Image
From the Department of Anniversaries-You-Probably-Forgot: Four years ago today, Nov. 23, brought the release of Warren Beatty’s Howard Hughes film, Rules Don’t Apply.

Forty years in the making, the movie landed with a thud. Domestic box-office sales appear to have been under $4 million. Back in 2016, moviegoers—still coming to terms with the Trump presidency— weren’t in the mood to hear about another eccentric billionaire.

But that title was work of genius, years ahead of its time. Rules Don’t Apply. Who knew that Beatty’s picture, or at least its title, would set a theme for 2020, when the rules would pile up, but almost everyone would claim a personal exemption.

Coronavirus? California’s governor partied this month at Napa Valley’s French Laundry restaurant while prepping a fresh lockdown for 41 “purple” counties, including Napa, and reminding the rest of us to wear a mask between bites. Some California legislators went one better,...

‘Emily in Paris’ ingenue Lily Collins is poised for Golden Globes return
Image
“Emily in Paris,” the new Netflix comedy series from “Sex and the City” creator Darren Star, has become a runaway hit for the streamer. It has struck a chord with audiences who are taken with the show’s sugary sweet escapism and plucky protagonist. With a flashy sensibility and an international flavor, there is a strong chance that the Golden Globes will take notice, especially for star Lily Collins.

She plays a young American woman who gets an exciting new opportunity as a social media marketer at her company’s French firm. Emily arrives in Paris barely knowing the language but bursting with self-confidence that her new French co-workers can find hard to take. As one might expect in the City of Love, she also finds herself caught up in a romance or two. The culture shock of Paris can sometimes turn Emily into the classic “Ugly American” stereotype (typically...

Police and the coroner’s office said a man fitting his age jumped from a Century City apartment building on Monday. Sources told TMZ he had been suffering from depression.

Bing, who inherited a fortune of some $600 million from his grandfather, L.A. real estate developer Leo S. Bing, also contributed millions of dollars to Democratic political causes.

After receiving his inheritance at the age of 18, Bing dropped out of Stanford to try out the movie business. While he was still a high school student at Harvard-Westlake, he wrote the story for “Missing in Action” and later wrote an episode of “Married With Children.”

In 2003, he co-wrote the action comedy “Kangaroo Jack,” starring Anthony Anderson and Jerry O’Connell.

Bing invested some $80 million in “The Polar Express,” the Tom Hanks-voiced 2004 film directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Steve Bing Dies: Film Financier & Philanthropist Jumped From Century City Building, Authorities Say
Image
Updated, with comment from former President Bill Clinton: Steve Bing, the film financier and philanthropist who backed hit movies from Robert Zemeckis’ The Polar Express and Beowulf to the Rolling Stones concert movie Shine a Light, has died.

According to law enforcement sources, Bing jumped from a Century City building at around 1 p.m. Monday. Following standard protocol, the Los Angeles Police Department would not confirm that the individual in question was Bing. However, the description of the man in his 50s who was found dead on the scene fits that of the producer.

Bing, also an influential political donor, was a real estate tycoon from a family with a rich history. In 2012, he pledged a $30 million legacy gift to the Motion Picture & Television Fund.

“For years Steve Bing has been one of the most philanthropic and generous people in our industry,” Jeffrey Katzenberg said at the time. “He has...

Warren Beatty, Alden Ehrenreich, and Lily Collins in L'Exception à la règle (2016)
Inside the Fight Over Warren Beatty’s ‘Rules Don’t Apply’ Fiasco (Exclusive)
Warren Beatty, Alden Ehrenreich, and Lily Collins in L'Exception à la règle (2016)
By April 2016, the warning lights were flashing red.

Warren Beatty had just finished “Rules Don’t Apply,” fulfilling a decades-long ambition of making a movie about Howard Hughes. He corralled the investors, wrote the screenplay, directed the film, and starred as Hughes. Now it was up to the distributors, Arnon Milchan’s Regency Entertainment and 20th Century Fox, to figure out how to sell it. Should it open wide, with a costly advertising campaign befitting its star’s pedigree? Or should it be treated like a niche independent film, with a limited release that could expand based on positive buzz?

To find out, Regency ordered two test screenings at the Arclight in Pasadena. The results were alarming. Moviegoers complained that the film dragged in the middle, and most of those under 40 had no idea who Hughes was. According to a report from the testing company, viewers described Hughes’ eccentric behavior as “frustrating,...

Warren Beatty Flop 'Rules Don't Apply' Sparks $18 Million Lawsuit Over Losses
Warren Beatty, Alden Ehrenreich, and Lily Collins in L'Exception à la règle (2016)
Warren Beatty's production company is being sued by Regency Entertainment for allegedly failing to pay back costs for the 2016 film Rules Don't Apply.

Regency claims it entered into talks with Beatty in 2013 to finance and distribute the Howard Hughes biopic, which was written by the star who starred in and directed the film. The distributor claims it agreed to incur substantial upfront costs which were to be recouped from the film's revenues. In addition to distributing the film, Regency says it also invested $2.5 million in the project.

Despite its star power, the $25 million film only grossed...

Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo Is So Bad He Needs an Acting Coach?
It may be time to really start worrying about the Han Solo: A Star Wars Story. Sure, alarms have been sounded in the past week. But this sounds seriously bad. Perhaps irreversible. Many Star Wars fans were, at the very least, probably pretty unsure when directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired just weeks before production on the movie was set to finish. However, with Ron Howard coming in and with five weeks of reshoots scheduled to take place after principal photography wraps, it feels like this ship could be turned in the right direction. That is, assuming that Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!), the man tasked with playing the young version of Han Solo, can pull it off. And therein lies the problem. It sounds like Lucasfilm wasn't happy with his performance prior to firing Lord and Miller.

The Hollywood Reporter recently did a very deep dive into what...

Rules Don't Apply review
Warren Beatty's new film, Rules Don't Apply, quietly snuck into UK cinemas last weekend. Here's our review...

Not unreasonably, Howard Hughes is a figure of fascination in cinema. From Leonardo DiCaprio in The Aviator to Terry O'Quinn in The Rocketeer, to characters who were inspired by him, like Willard Whyte in Diamonds Are Forever or Howard Stark in the Marvel cinematic universe, the billionaire businessman's on-screen influence feels fitting for his early status as a movie tycoon.

Now, Warren Beatty directs, produces, writes and stars in Rules Don't Apply, whose convention-busting title reflects the way in which it runs counter to other cinematic treatments by putting the spotlight on two of Hughes' many employees. Set during the tumultuous years of 1958 to 1964, the film focuses on virginal Virginia beauty queen Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins), an actress who's new to Hollywood, and Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich), a chauffeur who drives her around.

Rules Don’t Apply: Howard Hughes is the enigma Hollywood still obsesses over
Warren Beatty performs the latest resurrection of the eccentric movie mogul, following Tommy Lee Jones and Leonardo DiCaprio. But who played him best?

Related: Rules Don't Apply review – Warren Beatty as Howard Hughes: a strangely compelling vanity project

For all the talk of foot-long fingernails, shower-avoidance, Kleenex boxes for shoes, the multiple viewings of Ice Station Zebra, his decades-long addiction to painkillers and a Citizen Kane-sized persona, Howard Hughes did manage early in his career to make a sizeable dent in movie history. As a producer he backed Howard Hawks’s landmark, censor-baiting, gangster classic Scarface, as well as that marvel of logistics and barminess, Hell’s Angels. Since Hughes stopped making movies himself, other people have started making movies about Hughes, especially since his mysterious death in 1976.

Hugh Hefner Biopic Is Back on with Producer Brett Ratner
Hugh Hefner
Just days after Amazon Studios released their docu-drama series American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story, the Playboy Magazine founder's life story will be heading to the big screen. Brett Ratner and his company RatPac Entertainment have acquired the rights to Hugh Hefner's life story for a currently untitled biopic, which will be a co-production between RatPac and Playboy/Alta Loma Entertainment. Here's what Hugh Hefner himself had to say about this biopic coming to fruition.

"In recent years there has been plenty of interest and much conversation about doing a feature film based on my life. I have always believed that when the timing was truly right, the perfect creative partners would come together for this project. I believe we've found those partners in Brett Ratner and RatPac Entertainment. I'm very much looking forward to this collaboration."

This is actually the second time Brett Ratner has tried to...

Underground Season 2 Episode 1 Review: Contraband
Are you ready to run with me? If so, keep on reading!

If there was any doubt that Underground Season 2 would be able to sustain the momentum of its incredible first season, then the premiere should set most at ease.

Underground Season 2 Episode 1 was misleading in that it tricked us into believing it was going at a slightly slower pace when, in actuality, a lot happened.

It wisely chose to tighten its narrative by only focusing on two plot points, while introducing us to new characters, and laying down the groundwork for the season.

I was genuinely surprised to discover that it had been a full five months since Rosalee and Boo escaped and Noah was captured. Given the fact that Noah was the leader of the infamous Macon 7, I expected (an attempt) at publicly executing him to have happened a lot sooner.

John did everything within his power to...

Ewan McGregor on ‘American Pastoral’ and the Expectations of First Films
Ewan McGregor at an event for Amelia (2009)
[Editor’s Note: This post is presented in partnership with Spectrum. Catch up on this year’s Awards Season contenders and the latest films On Demand. Today’s pick is “American Pastoral.”]

Anyone making their first film would be thrilled to have the tools at Ewan McGregor’s disposal. Shortly before entering the third decade of his acting career, McGregor seized the opportunity to direct a feature, “American Pastoral.”

McGregor’s good fortune began with his source material, the Philip Roth novel of the same name. Working from one of the more beloved pieces of American literature was a strong foundation, but also set expectations high. To pull off the story of a family unceremoniously thrust into the turmoil of rural American life in the heart of the 20th century, McGregor enlisted an impressive cast. Alongside Jennifer Connelly, Dakota Fanning, Uzo Aduba and David Strathairn, McGregor himself stars as “Swede” Levov, the patriarch of the crumbling family at the film’s center.

Also on board for this ambitious first project: composer extraordinaire Alexandre Desplat, whose score helps underline the sparse, dissonant feelings...

Is Gotham City Sirens Getting Haley Bennett as Catwoman?
Back in December, Warner Bros. confirmed that Margot Robbie will reprise her Harley Quinn role from Suicide Squad in a new superhero spin-off Gotham City Sirens, with Suicide Squad director David Ayer returning to the helm. The movie will also feature other iconic DC Comics characters such as Poison Ivy and Catwoman, although those characters have not yet been cast. Since then, there have been no shortage of casting rumors for these coveted roles, and this weekend another potential candidate emerged, Haley Bennett, who teased her potential casting as Catwoman on social media.

The actress took to her Instagram recently to reveal a photo from the DC Comics of Catwoman, leading fans to speculate if she has been cast in this role or not. The actress wouldn't address the issue any further on social media, and it remains unclear when the studio will cast the Catwoman and Poison Ivy roles.

Oscar Predix & Personal Ballots: The Moulin Rouge! Categories...
If you've read The Film Experience for any length of time beyond let's say, a week, you'll know that we live for eye candy. Three of the cinematic arts that most regularly provide this are, outside of beautiful movie stars in the acting categories, Production Design and Costume Design i.e. the Moulin Rouge! categories. We love these categories so much we have two weekly series for them, Daniel Walber's "The Furniture" and my own forthcoming costume series "Three Fittings".

Anyway, it's time to make our final predictions for Oscar but it's also time to get those Film Bitch Awards (my own long running awards jamboree) going. So herewith my personal ballot and, putting the pundit hat on, my Oscar predictions. These two modes should not be confused... so apologies for discussing them simultaneously. Phil Collins in Frère des ours (2003)
Why Doesn't Lily Collins Have a British Accent? We're Genuinely Asking
Phil Collins in Frère des ours (2003)
Image Source: Getty / Michael Kovac Something that has been bothering us for a while now (besides, you know, climate-change deniers, bars that don't serve Rosé, and when something in the sale section isn't actually on sale) is the fact that Lily Collins, ubertalented actress and owner of some of the best brows in the business, doesn't have a British accent. That sounds like a nonsensical thing to be bothered by, because it is, but bear with us: even though her father is British and she did have an accent in the 2014 film Love, Rosie, Lily does not, in fact, have a British accent Irl. And we just feel like she should. Image Source: Getty / Todd Williamson Lily's father is, of course, the great English singer and former Genesis frontman Phil Collins. Her mother is Jill Tavelman, Phil's second wife and the former president of the Beverly Hills Women's Club. The 27-year-old was born in Surrey,...

The original musical directed by Damien Chazelle won in every category that it was nominated for. This set a new record at the Golden Globes, as La La Land's seven wins is the most in this award show's history.

Other big winners tonight were the expected Casey Affleck for his performance in Manchester by the Sea, and Viola Davis' reprisal of her role in the film adaptation of Fences.
