One of the (low-key) buzziest Emmy showdowns of the year just got promoted.
The race for Best Variety Special (Live) — featuring high-wattage contenders like Netflix’s Beyoncé Bowl and Peacock’s SNL 50: The Anniversary Special — was originally scheduled for the second night of the Creative Arts Emmys. Gold Derby has confirmed that the Television Academy has now moved it to the main Primetime Emmys telecast, airing Sept. 14 on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
According to Gold Derby’s latest combined odds, SNL50: The Anniversary Special is the category front-runner, followed by Apple Music’s Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show starring Kendrick Lamar, The Oscars, Beyoncé Bowl, and SNL50: The Homecoming Concert — another tribute entry from the most Emmy-winning show in history.
That means Queen Bey will have to defy the odds — again — if she hopes to finally add Emmy gold to her crowded trophy case.

Beyoncé has received eight Emmy nominations over the year but the most-award artist in Grammy history is still searching for a TV win.
The Cowboy Carter star will have another crack at an Emmy this year after her Netflix NFL halftime show Beyoncé Bowl was nominated in Outstanding Variety Special (Live), going head-to-head with both SNL50: The Anniversary Special and SNL50: The Homecoming Concert.
It marks an interesting battle between one of the biggest pop stars in the world and a TV special that featured more A-list celebrities and former SNL stars than could fit in Studio 8H.
Other nominees in the category include The Apple Music Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show
Starring Kendrick Lamar and The Oscars.
Last year, The Oscars, which was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, won the award, beating out The Apple Music Super Bowl Lviii Halftime Show Starring Usher, The 66th Grammy Awards, The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady...

is Kendrick Lamar looking to diss Drake during Super Bowl halftime? (Photo Credit – YouTube/Facebook)
Kendrick Lamar is reportedly set to stir up some serious drama during his Super Bowl halftime show by performing ‘Not Like Us,’ the explosive diss track aimed squarely at his rival Drake. The song, which took the hip-hop world by storm last summer, quickly became a central piece in their reignited feud, dominating conversations with its incendiary lyrics.
As one of the most talked-about tracks of the year, Not Like Us is Kendrick’s bold take on Drake, calling him out with accusations of being a pedophile and a “colonizer”, claims that have sparked a major backlash.
The Legal Fallout Over Not Like Us
Drake, clearly not pleased with the track’s success, hit back by suing Kendrick’s label, Universal Music Group, accusing them of spreading harmful, false narratives.

After news broke of Kendrick Lamar being chosen to headline the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans, there was much discussion within hip-hop circles about why hometown rapper Lil Wayne wasn’t booked instead. Now, Weezy himself has opened up about the emotional letdown he’s felt since Jay-Z and the NFL made the decision.
“It hurt a whole lot,” Wayne said on Instagram Live, blaming himself for “not being mentally prepared” for a letdown and assuming he would be picked as the Super Bowl Halftime performer. “I thought there was nothing better than that spot and that stage and that platform in my city. So it hurt. It hurt a whole lot.”

LL Cool J's role in NCIS: Hawaii isn't the only hip-hop connection in the franchise - Dr. McCallum's music inspired a famous song. NCIS has a history of featuring talented musicians, like Cote de Pablo and Pauley Perrette who showcased their skills on the show. As NCIS continues into season 22, bringing on famous singers as guest stars could revive the franchise's musical connection.
Surprisingly, one NCIS actor influenced a famous hip-hop song, but it upholds a trend for the NCIS franchise. NCIS has been on the air for over two decades, so it's no surprise that the franchise has featured several talented musicians over its historic 21-year run. However, this dapper doctor might not be the first character to consider when thinking about hip-hop.
The most direct connection the NCIS franchise has to hip-hop is to James Todd Smith, more commonly referred to by his stage name, LL Cool J....

As the anniversary of Jennifer Lopez's sixth studio album "Love?" approaches, it's a fitting time to reflect on this album's significance within J Lo's career, its impact on fans, and its continued relevance in light of her recent endeavors.
Released on April 29, 2011, "Love?" came at a time when Lopez was already a multifaceted force in entertainment. Music, film, and fashion-she'd conquered them all. Yet, "Love?" transcended mere career markers. It delved into love, a theme central to Lopez's personal narrative.
This wasn't just an album; it was a declaration. Through "Love?" Lopez explored her own quest for love and fulfillment. The title track, "(What Is) Love?" beautifully captures this yearning. Lopez laid bare her vulnerabilities through her music, creating an emotional connection with her audience. Take the poignant question - "Is this just a dream / Is this what it seems?" - which echoes a longing for validation, her desire to be someone's girlfriend,...

Not many would consider it hard labor to stand in the shadow of Jennifer Lopez. Few, perhaps, could stand as still and as long as documentary filmmaker Jason Bergh.
For nearly a decade, Bergh has recorded the multi-hyphenate star behind the scenes as she has charted new paths as a content producer and beauty mogul, and danced her way onto America’s biggest stage — the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Last month, Bergh took his loftiest seat at J. Lo, Inc. by serving as director for “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” a much-discussed documentary about the making of Lopez’s 2024 visual album “This Is Me … Now.”
Imposingly tall and excessively kind, Bergh has been a gentle giant in the unscripted space for years. He’s directed episodic and short content on notable music figures like Alicia Keys and athletes Stephen Curry and Clay Matthews. After the dust settled on “Greatest Love Story,...

The two previously collaborated on Halftime for Netflix, Lopez’s 2021 inauguration appearance, and much more. But Bergh, an Emmy Award winner and a 2019 NAACP Image Award nominated director, producer, and photographer, said he’s never seen Lopez like the one audiences will experience in The Greatest Love Story Never Told.

Back in 2013, Lil Jon famously pushed back against the very idea of meditation with his hit song “Turn Down for What,” but the King of Crunk has changed his tune. Today, he’s released a guided meditation album called Total Meditation.

Going through that and all of the emotions of the divorce—anger and frustration and all of the ups and downs — I found meditation to calm me and to bring me more at peace; to look at life and situations in a different manner. In the summer of 2022, Netflix released “Halftime,” a glossy, shiny, and intermittently revelatory documentary focused on global icon Jennifer Lopez. That offering found unexpected (if highly unrelatable) pathos in the star’s distress over not being nominated for an Oscar for her (quite good) turn in “Hustlers.” Just twenty months later, and yet another streamer is now releasing its own glossy, shiny, and intermittently revelatory film project focused on global icon Jennifer Lopez. The pathos, though? That’s mostly missing, but certainly not for lack of trying.
The project comes from the mind of Lopez herself, who also co-financed the effort. It’s clunkily titled (and punctuated) as “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story,” linking it inextricably with Lopez’s latest studio album, which just so happens to be dropping the same day as its “cinematic” component. Synergy!

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey surprised audiences during the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards by returning to the “Weekend Update” desk. The longtime collaborators returned to the Emmys stage Monday night to present the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live).
True to form, the duo had a specially crafted quip for each of the nominees. When it came time to list the Apple Music Super Bowl 57 Halftime Show Starring Rihanna, Fey referred to the Fox event as “The concert so good it got us all pregnant,” a nod to Rihanna performing while pregnant.
As for the rest of the nominees, Poehler called ABC’s broadcast of The Oscars “The only show that’s longer than when they aired ‘Titanic’ with commercials on TBS.” The “Parks and Recreation” star also joked that Elton John has “E-got to be excited” for the nomination for his Disney+ special, “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium,...

Usher’s performance next month during halftime of Super Bowl Lviii on CBS is getting an extra promo push from Apple – with a retro flourish.
The tech giant, which took over from Pepsi last year as the lead sponsor of the halftime show, has released a one-minute trailer (watch it above) titled “30 Years in the Making.” Set to the pop star’s 2004 hit “Yeah,” the trailer shows a range of clips of fans, street musicians, a church choir along with recognizable figures like NBA star LeBron James, Colombian singer-rapper J Balvin and BTS singer Jungkook. The main track pulses recognizably, but is mixed with flute, classical piano, choral versions and grainy camcorder footage of kids singing and Usher at a recording-studio mixing board.
The “30 years” tag refers to the long arc of the 45-year-old singer’s career, which began when he joined an R&b group in his native Dallas...

Some folks weren’t as thankful as they should’ve been for Dolly Parton’s halftime show during the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving game last week. But her younger sister Stella Parton came to her defense in a scathing tweet Sunday (November 26th), calling out those who weren’t pleased with our recent cover star rocking a cheerleader costume.
“I personally thought my big sister Dolly was cute as hell in her Dallas Cowboys cheerleading costume at the half time show on Thanksgiving,” Stella wrote. “To those of you being so critical of a 77 year old kicking up her heels, I say fuck yourself. Shame on you not her.”
In the middle of the Cowboys’ turkey game showdown against the Washington Commanders, Dolly sang classics like “Jolene” and “9 to 5” as well as covers of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You” in support of her new album Rockstar.

More than ever, rock stars were TV stars in 2023 — in the form of subjects for television documentaries — and so were their brethren in pop, hip-hop, K-pop and Latin music. Some of these TV films or docuseries were vanity projects used to promote new albums, of course; others started off as “making of” projects and ended up catching a star in a moment of real psychological crisis. It wasn’t all cinema verité; historical overviews capturing the full breadth of an artist’s career or even a genre still had their place in the pop-doc landscape.
Four films or limited series stand out in the subgenre of docs that were initially commissioned to capture an album or tour and, through circumstances, evolved into something deeper or darker. “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me” (Apple TV+) was going to be a tour documentary, but then, when an emotional breakdown caused her to pull off the road,...
