One of the (low-key) buzziest Emmy showdowns of the year just got promoted.

The race for Best Variety Special (Live) — featuring high-wattage contenders like Netflix’s Beyoncé Bowl and Peacock’s SNL 50: The Anniversary Special — was originally scheduled for the second night of the Creative Arts Emmys. Gold Derby has confirmed that the Television Academy has now moved it to the main Primetime Emmys telecast, airing Sept. 14 on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

According to Gold Derby’s latest combined odds, SNL50: The Anniversary Special is the category front-runner, followed by Apple Music’s Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show starring Kendrick Lamar, The Oscars, Beyoncé Bowl, and SNL50: The Homecoming Concert — another tribute entry from the most Emmy-winning show in history.

That means Queen Bey will have to defy the odds — again — if she hopes to finally add Emmy gold to her crowded trophy case.

Beyoncé has received eight Emmy nominations over the year but the most-award artist in Grammy history is still searching for a TV win.

The Cowboy Carter star will have another crack at an Emmy this year after her Netflix NFL halftime show Beyoncé Bowl was nominated in Outstanding Variety Special (Live), going head-to-head with both SNL50: The Anniversary Special and SNL50: The Homecoming Concert.

It marks an interesting battle between one of the biggest pop stars in the world and a TV special that featured more A-list celebrities and former SNL stars than could fit in Studio 8H.

Super Bowl Lix, pitting defending NFL champions the Kansas City Chiefs against the 2018 champs Philadelphia Eagles, is set for Sunday, February 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. It’s the eighth time the venue has hosted the big game.

The NFL found a “Superstar” to perform for tens of thousands of Super Bowl attendees and millions of viewers watching from home next year: R&b singer Usher will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl Lviii Halftime Show. Along with Apple Music and Roc Nation, the NFL announced on Sunday, September 24, that Usher will be the recording artist who takes the halftime stage at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday, February 11, 2024, as Super Bowl Lviii and its halftime show air on CBS. “It’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list. According to Fox, the 2023 Super Bowl ratings are in, and the telecast scored 113 million viewers, achieving a six-year-high in viewership and making it the third-most-watched television show of all time.

The only other two Super Bowl telecasts ahead of this year’s competition were 2015’s match between the Patriots and Seahawks and the 2017 game between the Patriots and Falcons, which both earned around 114 million views.

The viewership is measured by how many viewers watched the game at any given moment, but the number of viewers who watched any part of the showing was 183 million.

Fox has also reported that Rihanna’s performance earned a hefty 118.7 million views, making her halftime show the second most viewed show ever, just behind Katy Perry’s 2015 performance.
