Ryan Kavanaugh’s media company Gentv.Com will kick off a slate of influencer-driven movies with a streaming component this fall when “Skillhouse” hits theaters, and the introduction of this new model is already making waves online.
A 10-minute clip from “Skillhouse,” a horror movie written and directed by Josh Stolberg (“Saw X”) and starring influencers Bryce Hall and Hannah Stocking and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, generated over 1 million views in just one hour of being online and climbed to 3 million views in less than 24 hours. The average watchtime, according to Gentv, was 10 minutes and 54 seconds, meaning the majority of those who checked out the clip watched the entire thing.
While “Skillhouse” already has wide theatrical distribution itself, the virality of the clip has led to several studios wanting to partner on it for distribution, and it is likely they will end up partnering with one of the traditional distributors, according...

Ryan Kavanaugh has a new podcast about failure. By his own admission, he’s got “plenty of failure stories to tell.” The once high-flying thirtysomething mogul quickly turned into a Hollywood pariah when his Relativity Media sputtered into bankruptcy in 2015. Though he co-financed more than 200 films including “The Social Network,” “Mama Mia!” and “The Fighter,” he is best remembered for his foibles. Now 49, he’s quietly staging a comeback, producing influencer-led films like the upcoming Bryce Hall-50 Cent satire “Skill House.” And he boasts a majority stake in the video platform Triller, a TikTok rival that was poised to go public in 2021, never did, but may still.
With the podcast “Failure,” which bows today from Manifest Media, Kavanaugh sits down with a range of guests — from Hollywood rabbis to influencers with mega-followings to, yup, Nigel Lythgoe — to explore the dynamic of why public failures can lead to redemptive triumphs over 24 episodes.

Ryan Kavanaugh has acquired a large stake in the movie streaming service Row8 through his production outfit Proxima Media, TheWrap has learned; as part of the deal, the companies have collaborated on a new joint venture, Proxima 8.
The terms of the deal are not known but the deal aims to give Proxima big savings on marketing and distribution of its films.
Proxima 8 plans to create interactive movies experiences that among other things will offer behind-the-scenes looks at productions, chances to participate in productions or premieres, and virtual interactions with stars and directors.
Subscription-free Row8 offers rentals of new and back catalog films via distribution deals with the major studios. The service allows customers to cancel rentals within the first 30 minutes of watching and exchange for another title, and offers “scene alert,” which alerts parents to potentially inappropriate scenes before they display.

Charli D'Amelio is flexing her acting chops.
A few days shy of her 18th birthday, the TikTok star has been announced as the lead for Home School, a film that will be produced by Ryan Kavanaugh's Proxima Media and financed through the film exec's Entertainment Stock Exchange.
Home School is a thriller that stars the younger D'Amelio sister as a teenager who encounters supernatural happenings after moving to a new town. Kavanaugh told Deadline that the film is trying to be "The Sixth Sense meets Get Out." Should Home School succeed in that goal, it could be developed into a franchise with up to eight distinct thrillers starring D'Amelio.
D'Amelio's foray into acting has a lot in common with Skill House, which features Sway LA co-founder Bryce Hall. Both movies are led by TikTok stars, both are produced by Kavanaugh, and both feature directors who have experience with popular horror franchises.
