At this time, Lucas had completed filming his second feature film, American Graffiti, which would become a hit. His first feature film was 1971’s Thx-1138, a dystopian sci-fi, and a flop in theaters. Sound on Sight undertook a massive project, compiling ranked lists of the most influential, unforgettable, and exciting action scenes in all of cinema. The results: 100 essential set pieces, sequences, and scenes from blockbusters to cult classics to arthouse obscurities.
Sword fights, like one-on-one fights, target the emotion and power of each individual fighter, but are amplified by the extension of their weapon. Whereas one-on-one fights test the might and bronze of our competitors, sword fights add an extra element of intelligence and skill. A fighter can scrape by through luck in a brawl of fists, but a sword (and knife) fight exposes the true strengths and weaknesses of its opponents.

In a continued attempt to find interesting, less predictable work post-Oscar, Matthew McConaughey has his eye on another interesting film. He’s now attached to star in an adaptation of Christopher Dougall’s best-selling book Born To Run.Matthew Michael Carnahan has tackled the adaptation of the tome, which is subtitled 'A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes, And The Greatest Race The World Has Never Seen'. BBC Drama Legacy Review
Foyle’s War, Spies of Warsaw, The Americans . . . the Cold War is all the rage these days with TV executives and tonight BBC2 added another Soviet era spy drama into the mix. Legacy, like the Americans, is set in the 1970s. It tells the tale of Charles Thoroughgood (Charlie Cox) a new recruit at MI6 who is tasked with “turning” a Russian buddy from his college days. Viktor Koslov (Andrew Scott) seems like an easy target until it emerges that he has plans of his own.
The premise is reasonable enough and the cast which also includes Romola Garai (The Hour) is top notch. However, despite some atmospheric filming, fairly good dialogue and a pretty good tempo, Legacy lacked a . . . je ne sais quoi. Part of the problem was obvious. While The Americans looks and feels authentic, Legacy looked like a contemporary show in which the...

On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. [Check out the On the Road trailer. Check out Kristen Stewart On the Road poster; Garrett Hedlund On the Road poster.] Otr movie reedit hardly unique On the other hand, different cuts shown in different countries is hardly something new. Whether as a result of poor critical/box-office reception, (perceived) local sensibilities, and/or censorship, the movie you watch in, say, Canada isn't necessarily the exact same movie watched by someone in Singapore,...

Monroe. Acorn Media DVD
Hot on the heels of the release of the critically acclaimed Time Team DVD, the good folks at Acorn Media have unearthed some more gems to close out the month of May. On 29 May, British TV fans stateside can get their hands on ITV’s medical drama Monroe. The title character is a neurosurgeon who is kind of like Sherlock Holmes in scrubs. Brilliantly clever, sharp tongued, intolerant of fools but someone who is ultimately concerned with making a meaningful and positive contribution to society.
Norther Irish actor James Nesbitt takes on the role of Monroe. American viewers may remember him as the lead man in the BBC America drama Jekyll. In the UK he is perhaps even better known for his starring role in the Iraq war drama Occupation. Nesbitt is ideally suited to this role. He is charismatic in a quirky sort of way...

BBC One and ITV may have dominated the holiday season but as we head into 2012, Sky One are rolling out some big guns of their own and proving that the network can compete with the traditional power houses when it comes to quality drama. The network’s Treasure Island, saw a motley crew of British TV stars, Hollywood actors and a certain comedian coming together in the kind of bid budget production that other channel’s can scarcely afford to make.
Rupert Penry-Jones (Silk) was in his element as the aristocratic expedition leader Trelawney and Philip Glenister (Hidden) was well cast as the no nonsense Captain Smollett. Daniel Mays (Outcasts) did well as an upper class doctor and Toby Regbo as Jim Hawkins did remarkably well...

The BBC seemingly spared no expense in assembling an all-star cast for this new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations but the end result (based on part one) is a show that has some good points but some notable weaknesses. Both versions of Pip were as good as any that I have seen in previous versions of the tale and the costumes, the scenery and the overall mood of the piece seemed fairly authentic.
On the flip side, Gillian Anderson seemed to be channeling the spirit of Christmas past as she floated around and mumbled things in a Mickey Mouse like voice. Another issue was the music. Once upon a time,...

BBC America’s Dramaville continues next Wednesday with episode one of the critically acclaimed thriller State of Play. The show was originally broadcast in the UK during 2003 and is regarded by many as one of the BBC’s best ever productions. American viewers may be more familiar with the movie version starring Russell Crowe that was released in 2009. The six part TV version was written by Paul Abbott (Shameless) and it tells the tale of a politician (David Morrissey) who becomes embroiled in two seemingly unrelated murder investigations.
State of Play served as a launching pad for many of the biggest stars on British TV including John Simm (Life on Mars), Philip Glenister (Hidden) and Marc Warren (Hustle). The three men were reunited earlier this year...

Poirot star David Suchet is also in the cast and he is becoming something of a regular fixture on the BBC after his recent appearance in Hidden. Frances Barber, Claire Rushbrook and Douglas Booth are the other notables among the cast. Hidden episode four created more questions than it answered. Did Mark defy his orders when he killed the villains of the piece? Where had he been for the last 20 years? Did Wentworth outlast, outwit and outplay the people who planned to use him as a fall guy? What were Gina’s parents told? How did Stiles manage to hold down a career as a professional killer for all these years if he can’t even take care of a solicitor with a drug habit and a young lawyer?
Questions aside, the finale had the same kind of tense feel to it that made State of Play such a hit. In that show the media were the heroes but in this one they were among the villains. It was an exciting episode...

Celebrity Juice continued to prove popular on Thursday evening, while Hidden just outperformed Joanna Lumley's Greek Odyssey, the latest audience data has shown. The new series of comedy panel show Celebrity Juice amused 1.28m (6.7%) on ITV2 from 10pm and 206k (2.1%) on timeshift. Earlier, The X Factor USA racked up 732k (3.1%) on the channel from 8pm and 141k (0.7%) on +1. Hidden, starring Philip Glenister as troubled solicitor Harry Venn, was seen by 3.76m (16.4%) on BBC One in the 9pm slot, down by almost 500k week-on-week. But the drama still proved too strong for Joanna Lumley's Greek Odyssey, which delighted 3.59m (15.6%) on ITV1 and 148k (0.8%) on +1. Elsewhere on BBC One, Watchdog was seen by 4.06m (16.7%) in the 8pm hour and Question Time quizzed 2.31m (20.3%) from 10.45pm. Beeny's (more)...

The truth won’t be Hidden for much longer. I am eager to see the final installment of this thrilling drama but I am also mindful that whatever replaces it on BBC1 is unlikely to be as good. At this point I think it is safe to say that Hidden is going to keep us on the egde of our seats right up until the credits roll at the end of next week’s episode.
The biggest mystery of all (the one involving the Raf war hero, the bottle of Scotch, the media mogul and the politicians) has yet to be solved but we did learn a few new things tonight. Firstly, we discovered that Nigel is not Gina’s real Dad which makes sense when you consider the...

BBC One's drama Hidden lost viewers on Thursday evening, but still outperformed Joanna Lumley's Greek Odyssey on ITV1, the latest audience data has shown. However, the drama proved too strong for Joanna Lumley's Greek Odyssey, which premiered with 3.64m (16.3%) on ITV1 in the 9pm hour and 199k (1.1%) on +1. Watchdog was seen by 4.59m (19.9%) on BBC One in the 8pm hour, and Question Time quizzed 2.61m (20.3%) from 10.45pm. Another week, more edge-of-the-seat drama and another cliffhanger ending. Earlier this summer ITV’s Injustice took viewers on a similar kind of thrill ride before fans were left disappointed by a farcical finale. Hopefully, Ronan Bennett and the team behind Hidden will not make the same mistake because if the remaining two episodes of Hidden are as good as the first two then this will be the drama of the year.
In episode two Stevie Quirk was killed while waiting to be released to the visitor’s area of Belmarsh prison. His murder left Harry Venn feeling a little bit nervous to say the least and that is without Harry even having any idea just who is behind this whole mess. Meanwhile we got to hear David Suchet speaking in...

Philip Glenister is back with a bang – literally. Ok so the bang came right at the end of the episode but nevertheless Glenister’s new show Hidden has all the hallmarks of being hit. The Life on Mars star plays the role of Harry Venn who currently works as a solicitor but was once a getaway driver for some unsavory characters who killed a couple of police officers. Venn’s past is catching up with him and a mysterious lawyer named Gina Hawkes (Thekla Reuten) is the woman who seems to be raking up his murky secrets.
Venn is a dark character and not in the violent, jokey kind of Gene Hunt way. He is a man who ran out on his wife and son and then thought...

Ronan Bennett’s new show, Hidden is coming to BBC One in the first week of October. Life on Mars star Philip Glenister plays the role of Harry Venn, a one-time criminal who now works as a lawyer. Venn’s past comes back to haunt him after he agrees to take on a case involving a career criminal called Joe Collins.
Dutch actress Thekla Reuten plays attorney Gina Hawkes in the four part show while Poirot star David Suchet takes on the role of Sir Nigel Fountain. Unlike other recent high profile dramas such as The Fades, Doctor Who and Luther, Hidden was not co-produced by BBC America so it is unclear whether the network will broadcast episodes in the U.S.

2011 has produced some great dramas so far but as we head into the Fall, the major networks may have saved the best until last. The BBC and ITV tend to play their cards close to their chest so the exact air dates for many shows remain unknown and some shows that are slated for 2011 may end up being pushed back to 2012. However, as things stand right now, the following dramas are likely to be among the best British TV shows aired in what remains on 2011.
Downton Abbey Season Two. Fans in the USA will have to wait until early 2012 to the see the next installment of Julian Fellowes’ wildly popular period drama but fans in Britain only have to wait until next month for the new season to begin.
Undisclosed. According to Philip Glenister’s own website,...

The former, will feature X-Files star Gillian Anderson as the haggard Miss Havisham, Ray Winstone as Magwitch and Poirot star David Suchet as Jaggers. Anderson recently played another haggard Victorian woman in the Crimson Petal and the White and based on her performance in that show, she is ideally suited to take on the part of Miss Havisham.
