Ashlee Simpson Ross is heading to Las Vegas!

The 40-year-old “Pieces of Me” singer will headline the I Am Me residency at Voltaire in the Venetian Resort this August.

The performances will take place between August 29 and August 30 over Labor Day weekend.

“I’ve been holding onto this news for a while, and I’m beyond thrilled to finally share it — I’m hitting the stage in Vegas!” she said to Variety.

“Music has always been the place where I feel the most alive, and I’m looking forward to sharing that energy with you all. I’m so grateful for my fans who have supported me throughout my entire career. Let’s make these shows unforgettable!”

The Surrender is a mother-daughter story with resurrection, lost souls, and severed body parts. Julia Max’s intimate horror film is also about familial bond and conflict in the face of loss—the terror of saying goodbye. “Really, this should have come out on Mother’s Day,” Max half-jokes. “Let’s be honest. We’re close enough.”

The well-received Shudder pic is a personal horror story from Max, who previously directed the hit horror short, Pieces of Me. She was inspired to write her feature directorial debut after experiencing the loss of her stepfather. She explores the past through Megan (Colby Minifie) and Barbara (Kate Burton), as they debate resurrecting the deceased.

Recently, Max spoke with Daily Dead about the origin of The Surrender and the catharsis of horror.

It’s been several years since I graduated from college, so I’m unqualified to say with certainty whether or not it’s a regular occurrence for today’s savvy students to bond over their love of Ashlee Simpson, whose last album came out before some of them were born.

The Surrender

Director Julia Max's début feature, The Surrender, revolves around Megan's (Colby Minifie) tense relationship with her mother Barbara (Kate Burton). When her terminally ill father passes away, Barbara invites a stranger into the family home to resurrect the family patriarch, which only complicates mother and daughter's attempts to resolve their difficult past.

Max's previous credits include her debut short film, The Colonies (2015), a science-fiction premise with a reality television spin, and the horror, Pieces Of Me (2020), about a starlet who discovers a way to fulfil her dreams of fame and fortune. Minifie has starred in The Boys (2019-present), Fear The Walking Dead (2015-2023) and Charlie Kaufman's psychological thriller I'm Thinking Of Ending Things (2020).

Speaking with Eye For Film, Max and Minifie discussed The Surrender's personal roots, the unreliability of memory and how cinema can make us feel less alone.

Paul Risker: The word horror conjures up different expectations for.

When you think of Ashlee Simpson, there’s probably only one image that comes to mind: her lip-syncing snafu on SNL, in which she went to perform her second song of the night, only for the playback to trigger her first song, “Pieces of Me”. It’s extremely rare for musical guests on SNL to go through gaffes of Ashlee Simpson’s magnitude: musicians like Elvis Costello would instead raise intentional hell by playing whatever song he wanted, while Sinead O’Connor used her moment to send a message.

Ashlee Simpson has the benefit of hindsight when it comes to her infamous 2004 appearance on Saturday Night Live. Speaking on the Broad Ideas With Rachel Bilson & Olivia Allen podcast, the singer explained that the performance, which saw her lip-syncing her single “Autobiography,” taught her how to pick herself back up.

“I had done my rehearsal the night before and then I woke up the next day and I couldn’t speak,” Simpson explained on the podcast episode. “I saw the voice doctor that day and I had two nodules beating against each other.

Ashlee Simpson is celebrating Autobiography!

The 39-year-old singer revealed that in honor of the album’s 20th anniversary in 2024, she’s working on a way to celebrate the occasion.

“I am starting to work on the rerelease,” she told Us Weekly in an interview.

“I’m going to celebrate that album. Maybe I’ll go in and redo some of the songs, but I’m definitely going to do a performance around the anniversary.”

She also teased that she may release a few new songs when the anniversary comes this summer.

“I’d love to do some Pride shows too,” she added.

Her husband, Evan Ross, added that Ashlee plans to “go big” for the occasion.
