“Black Heat” wastes little time on pleasantries, thrusting its audience directly into a maelstrom of parental fear and violent resolve. The premise is stark: Malik and Alexis are on a desperate, high-stakes mission to retrieve their teenage daughter, Tiana. She has fallen under the sway of King David, a criminal figure operating from the labyrinthine confines of a sprawling apartment complex.

From its opening frames, the film establishes an immediate, almost breathless intensity, signaling a narrative that prioritizes forward momentum and the raw urgency of its central characters’ plight. The story kicks off not with the ‘why’ but the ‘how,’ as the parents are already deep into their dangerous endeavor.

The Unconventional Saviors

At the heart of “Black Heat” are Malik (Jason Mitchell) and Alexis (DreamDoll), a couple whose bond is tested and affirmed by their shared, perilous objective. Their transformation into determined rescuers is compelling precisely because they eschew typical action hero archetypes.

Tabatha “DreamDoll” Robinson is a rapper who has made the move into acting, and with that foray into screen performance, in action thriller Black Heat, has shown her versatility as a performer. To mark the home ent release of the film, we had the pleasure in speaking to her, to discuss the project at hand.

Given she is also a brand new mum to a daughter, and I’m expecting my first child any day now, the conversation also went into parenting, seeking vital advice while discussing how parenthood will change her career and perspective, no less on the themes of the movie at hand.

There’s something inherently exciting about a thriller that takes place entirely within one apartment building or complex — a setting that is contained while threatening potentially nasty surprises behind every door. Prolific indie writer-director-producer Wes Miller’s Orlando-shot “Black Heat” doesn’t offer much more than that basic concept, yet he keeps this high-body-count action exercise pounding along in lively if blunt fashion.

Starring “Straight Outta Compton’s” Jason Mitchell and Tabatha Robinson (aka rapper DreamDoll) as parents rescuing their daughter from criminals at a sprawling housing project, the film could have used some additional polish in terms of both script and style. Still, it’s got enough propulsive energy to keep viewers entertained. Dark Star Pictures and production company BLacklight are co-releasing to over 200 U.S. theaters on March 28.

This initially premiered at the 2024 American Black Film Festival last year, and will be out in theaters at the end of March to watch. "Two parents. One night. Zero options." Two frustrated parents infiltrate a top level drug dealer / pimp's apartment complex to rescue their teenage daughter. Fueled by love and a fierce sense of justice, they must navigate a network of deceit and betrayals, relying on their own cunning, strength, and courage to outsmart those who would exploit the innocent. Exclusive: Black Heat, the latest feature from Call Her King filmmaker Wes Miller starring Jason Mitchell (Mudbound), will be released in U.S. cinemas on March 28.

Joining Mitchell in the pic are rappers Tabatha “Dreamdoll” Robinson and Nle Choppa, in his first big-screen appearance. Miller is directing from a script he wrote. Andrew van den Houten and Miller are producing through their Blacklight banner. Production is currently underway in Orlando, Florida.
