The Gardener (Le Jardinier), not to be confused with the Gary Daniels/Robert Bronzi film, reunites Jean-Claude Van Damme and David Charhon who directed him in The Last Mercenary. And like that film, it’s an action comedy, but with the comedy dialed up a bit higher, and the action a bit more on the brutal side.

This time out, The Muscles From Brussels plays Leo, a man who simply wants to tend to plants on the large estate owned by Serge Shuster Special Adviser to the President of France. Nobody seems quite sure how he ended up with the position, and they think he’s a bit odd, but he does a good job so they’ve let him stay on.

As reported by Variety, Other Angle Pictures secured sales in the United States with Blue Fox and in Germany with Plaion Pictures. Russia's All Media and Media Squad in Eastern Europe also bought distribution rights from Other Angle. Le jardinier begins filming on February 5 in Belgium and France, with the iconic Van Damme starring opposite Michaël Youn (Bde). Jean-Claude Van Damme, the global martial artist turned action hero whose 2021 movie “The Last Mercenary” was a hit on Netflix, has another film on the horizon. He will star opposite Michaël Youn (“Bde”) in “Le jardinier,” another high-voltage action-comedy reuniting him with “The Last Mercenary” director David Charhon.

Amazon Prime Video has acquired “Le jardinier” for France, while Other Angle Pictures is handling international sales on the movie and has already secured sales in the U.S. (Blue Fox), Germany (Plaion Pictures), Russia (All Media) and Eastern Europe (Media Squad).

France’s Other Angle Pictures has expanded its footprint into the US market with a new Los Angeles-based arm focused on distribution, production and international sales of French features with a focus on crowd-pleasing comedies and more commercial dramas.

The company, founded by longtime French film executive Olivier Albou and his wife Laurence Schonberg in 2008, is looking to tap into its network of US producers and buyers looking for French remakes and original content. The company intends to acquire titles independently and release them in association with US distribution partners in limited theatrical release.

France TV Distribution has enlisted a raft of major distributors worldwide for “Sugar and Stars,” a movie starring Riadh Belaïche, a social media influencer-turned-actor.

The inspirational drama is based on the true story of Yazid Ichemrahem, an underdog who became a famous pastry chef.

“Sugar and Stars” marks the debut feature of Sébastien Tulard, who has directed several shorts and worked as assistant director on hit French comedies such as Tarek Boudali’s “30 jours max,” Frank Gastambide’s popular show “All the Way Up,” Dany Boon’s “Supercondriaque” and Philippe Lacheau’s “Babysitting.”

Fast X director Louis Leterrier confirms that the franchise will return to practical action after F9 veered off into ridiculously over-the-top territory. The tenth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise is planned to be the first of the two-part series' finale, and will see Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) protecting his family from Dante (Jason Momoa), whose father, Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida), was killed during the events of Fast Five. The “Lupin” duo of filmmaker Louis Leterrier and star Omar Sy reunites in the new Netflix action film “The Takedown,” but unfortunately the result is seriously underbaked and awkwardly problematic.

A sequel to the 2008 French film “On the Other Side of the Tracks”, “The Takedown” stars Laurent Lafitte as Francois Monge, Omar Sy as Diakité Ousmane and French rock singer Izïa Higelin as Alice. Louis Leterrier (“Lupin,” “Now You See Me”) directs the film, leading Netflix’s new slate of French-language originals coming to the streaming service.

Both films pay homage to ’80s classics like “Lethal Weapon” and “Beverly Hills Cop,” and Sy even regularly sports Axel Foley’s signature baseball jacket and jeans. Occasionally buddy cop movies, when given good ingredients like a proper script, good physical comedy, and well-executed action scenes, can be a recipe for a comedic blockbuster.

“The Takedown,” unfortunately, didn’t stay in the oven long enough.

It will still be a few months (or more than a few months) before we get to see the first trailer for “Fast X,” but it’s hard to imagine a better (or at least more indicative) preview of next summer’s most Nos-brained soap opera than Netflix’s “The Takedown,” .

Of course, Louis Leterrier isn’t exactly an unknown quantity; between the likes of “The Transporter,” “Clash of the Titans,” and “Now You See Me,” the Luc Besson protégé has built a singular résumé of flashy, semi-functional, thoroughly mediocre studio movies that could’ve been made by anyone else. In that sense, his latest opus is vintage Leterrier, if also better-paced and more charismatic than any of his previous features have been.

Frothier than the average Netflix programmer but no less forgettable, “The Takedown” epitomizes why Leterrier might be able to stop “Fast X” from speeding off a cliff...

It’s easy to see why Netflix wanted to reteam actor Omar Sy and director Louis Leterrier in something, anything, given the popularity of their previous collaboration, the French thriller series “Lupin.” But U.S. viewers may be a tad puzzled by the streamer’s decision to green-light as their follow-up a popcorn movie as nondescript as “The Takedown” — a sequel to “On the Other Side of the Tracks” (“De l’autre côté du périph”), a lightweight 2012 French-produced buddy-cop action-comedy that, whatever its popularity in its home territory, received only (very) limited release by The Weinstein Company in this county.

On the other hand: Leterrier — whose credits also include “Now You See Me” and the first two entries in the “Transporter” franchise — has just this week been given the keys to “Fast X,” replacing the creatively distanced Justin Lin as director for the next installment of the “Fast & Furious” franchise.

Amazon Prime Video has ordered its next French series original, “Darknet-sur-Mer,” (“On the Darknet”) a crime comedy series produced by Noor Sadar’s White Lion Films, a Mediawan Group company.

The six-episode series, directed by Remy Four and Julien War (“On The Other Side of the Tracks”), has just started filming in the Charente Maritime region of Southwest France. “Darknet-sur-Mer” is the first scripted program to be supported by the Selective Platforms Fund recently launched by the National Film Board for content backed by streamers.

“On the Darknet” revolves around a mysterious website named Vrasesin which offers services from contract killers and turns out to be a scam created by Ben and Flo, two amateur hackers who live in a quiet fishing resort at Ponet-sur-Mer. But Ben and Flo’s enterprise soon get them in trouble with Alkan, an Albanian criminal who is searching for a contract killer to assassinate the chief of a gang.

France’s National Film Board (Cnc) has launched a selective funding scheme for French audiovisual content that are pre-financed exclusively by non-European platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon and Disney Plus.

Named the “fonds sélectif plateformes,” the dedicated scheme will have a total budget of €5 million ($5.7 million) and will go to projects fully financed by platforms and produced by French producers who will be the beneficiaries of the subsidies.

The funding initiative is being backed by France’s culture minister and was approved by the Cnc’s administrative board on Nov. 5.

The Cnc president pointed out “platforms are obligated to invest in French content since July so the fund is there to accompany the evolution of the TV and film industry” and ultimately “strengthen its independent production sector.”

The titles were announced during a virtual presentation of Netflix’s French slate for 2021, hosted by Damien Couvreur, head of French series originals, Sara May, Netflix’s head of acquisitions and co-productions for France and Italy, and Dauba-Pantanacce.

“Lost Bullet” is high-concept thriller revolving around a man who gets arrested after a failed robbery and starts working for a cop unit to avoid going to jail.

Omar Sy and Louis Leterrier, the star and director respectively of Netflix hit series Lupin, are teaming with the streamer again on a sequel to 2021 French comedy On The Other Side Of The Tracks.

The pic will see Sy and co-star Laurent Lafitte reprise their roles from the original movie, which was the story of two very different police officers who team up after a business mogul’s wife is murdered.

They may have worked together many years ago, but life has forced them apart.
