“Let me ask you something,” composer Lalo Schifrin told me a few years ago during a long conversation that, sadly, would be our last. “When you write your articles, do you require a piano? I had the privilege of interviewing Schifrin, who died Thursday at 93, multiple times during the past three decades. The most memorable meeting with the Emmy-nominated (Mission: Impossible theme) and Oscar-nominated composer (Sting II, The Amityville Horror) was a leisurely lunch at one of his favorite Beverly Hills restaurants when I was still in my early 20s and just getting started in journalism.

Chatting with Fangoria for the piece, director Matt Palmer (Calibre) reveals that Fear Street: Prom Queen is set in 1988, telling a standalone story unconnected to the three Netflix Fear Street movies that were directed by Leigh Janiak back in 2021.

Palmer teases, “My guess would be that this one won’t be the end of the trilogies, but it also won’t be the end of standalone films, and they’ll all weave together in really interesting ways.”

Netflix is headed back to Shadyside with Fear Street: Prom Queen later this year, the next installment in their growing Fear Street Cinematic Universe. The movies are of course based on R.L. Stine’s classic teen horror novels, and Stine recently let us know that Prom Queen isn’t the only new Fear Street movie in the works. According to Stine, three more are on the way!

But first up is Fear Street: Prom Queen, which doesn’t yet have a trailer or premiere date. The film has been officially rated by the MPA this week, however, landing a hard “R” rating.

2021's Fear Street trilogy proved to be a major success for Netflix, and amid persistent rumors that the streamer might be planning to develop more adaptations of R.L. Stine's work, we got confirmation that a Fear Street movie was in the works last November.

Netflix recently announced the full cast and a synopsis for Fear Street: Prom Queen (or Fear Street '88: Prom Queen as it's titled in this video), and the streamer has now revealed that filming is officially underway.

We also have a brief behind-the-scenes teaser featuring several members of the cast chatting about the show as they prepare to shoot their scenes. Something tells us their characters won't be having quite as much fun as Prom Night progresses.

Writer Neil Gaiman is enjoying some success with his TV adaptations Lucifer, The Sandman, Good Omens and Dead Boy Detectives. Deadline has now reported that the famed graphic novel writer will be teaming up with Graphic India for an animated adaptation of his short story, Cinnamon. The screenplay is set to be adapted by Coraline author and leading Indian animation writer and creator Sharad Devarajan (The Legend of Hanuman; Baahubali: The Lost Legends) along with Sarena Khan and Sujatha Sv. Indian animator Jeevan J. Kang is on board to direct the adaptation.

Village Roadshow Entertainment Group is staying in business with Kevin Garnett.

The company has extended its first-look deal with Garnett’s Content Cartel. The move will see it join the partnership between Content Cartel and Bill Maher’s podcast network Club Random Studios to develop films and series from its podcast content.

Village Roadshow struck its first-look deal with NBA legend Garnett in 2021 to develop and produce feature films, scripted and unscripted TV, and digital content. Garnett set up the company with Brian Bennett and Mike Marangu.

The deal has already generated series including Goliath about Wilt Chamberlain, features such as Cinnamon with Pam Grier and Damon Wayans and Murder City starring Mike Colter.

Club Random Studios was founded by Maher, Chris Case, and Chuck Labella to house, finance, and develop celebrity-hosted podcasts. The company launched a partnership in March with Garnett for Kg Certified, the Content Cartel podcast hosted by Garnett,...

Neil Young played his “Love Earth Tour” kick-off show with Crazy Horse at San Diego’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre on Wednesday night (April 24th).

The 14-song setlist primarily consisted of Young’s most beloved hits, including “Down by the River,” “Cortez the Killer,” “Cinnamon Girl,” “Powderfinger,” and “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black).” Notably, “Cortez the Killer” featured Young singing some of the song’s original lyrics from a manuscript that he only recently rediscovered.

Known as the queen of 1970s Blaxploitation classics like “Coffy” and “Foxy Brown,” plus Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-nominated film “Jackie Brown,” Grier is enjoying her latest act thanks to movies like 2023’s “Cinnamon.” That film kicked off her relationship with Village Roadshow Pictures, which produced the title under the company’s Black Noir Cinema banner for Tubi.

“Foxy: My Life in Three Acts” details Grier’s legendary screen career; her relationships with Richard Pryor, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Freddie Prinze, among others; her experience as a Black female star in an era with rampant racism and sexism; and her battle with stage-four cervical cancer, diagnosed in 1988, when she was told she had 18 months to live.

Paramount+ released the first look photos for its prequel to Stephen King’s novel, “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines”, based on the terrifying and untold chapter from Stephen King’s novel Pet Sematary.

Starring Jackson White, the film follows a young Jud Crandall in 1969, who dreams of leaving his hometown of Ludlow, Maine. He soon discovers his family’s dark history and must join his childhood friends to defeat the ancient evil gripping his hometown.

Hailey Kilgore is finally ready for her leading-lady moment. After scoring breakthrough roles in the Aretha Franklin biopic "Respect" and Starz's "Power Book III: Raising Kanan," the 24-year-old actor and singer is commanding attention on the big screen as the star of "Cinnamon." The Tubi Blaxploitation-inspired thriller, written and directed by Bryian Keith Montgomery Jr., features Kilgore as Jodi, whose aspirations resemble the actor's own as a singer who dreams of chart-topping success. The film - which premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival - marks Kilgore's first time anchoring a movie project, which she admittedly tells Popsugar is something she's yearned to do for a while but "never really had the full confidence" to pursue.

"I never felt worthy enough to do it," she shares, adding that her belief was mainly fueled by being a "young Black woman in an industry where [I'm overlooked] if I don't fit a very specific thing.

Cinnamon is a genre-bending film that has already wowed audiences at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival and announced the arrival of Village Roadshow’s collaboration with NBA star Kevin Garnett in style. Written and directed by Bryian Keith Montgomery Jr., Cinnamon tells the tale of an aspiring singer (Hailey Kilgore) whose life is uprooted when she is embroiled in a fatal crime. The film is the first in Village Roadshow’s Black Noir Cinema slate, which was developed by Garnett after he was introduced to Village Roadshow’s CEO Steve Mosko by his Uncut Gems co-star Adam Sandler.Unsurprisingly, music is at the heart of Cinnamon, and Kilgore delivers fantastic performances both in terms of her acting and singing. To fill in the world outside of Kilgore’s work, the filmmakers enlisted Daniel Ciurlizza, a composer whose work can be heard across a range of media including films, trailers, and television.

“Cinnamon” and “A Song From the Dark” were two of the big winners at the Best of the ABFF Awards presented Saturday during the American Black Film Festival.

“Aladdin” and “Charlie’s Angels” breakout Naomi Scott will star alongside “Game of Thrones” alum Kit Harrington and Oscar winner Jeremy Irons in the epic romance “Eternal Return,” Variety can report exclusively. Village Roadshow Pictures is producing the project and will introduce the film to buyers at next week’s Cannes Film Festival.

“Eternal Return” follows Cass (Scott), a young woman who has resigned herself to a life of emotional invulnerability until she meets Virgil (Harington), a cartographer who makes maps to imaginary places. Along with his partner Malcolm (Irons), a vibrant renaissance man, the pair relentlessly attempts to travel back in time to awaken Cass to love again. The original feature is written and directed by Yaniv Raz (“Dr. Bird’s Advice for Sad Poets”).

Jillian Apfelbaum, Tristen Tuckfield, and Nic Gordon are overseeing the project for Village Roadshow. They will produce alongside Scott and Jordan Spence’s New Name Entertainment.

The noir thriller follows a struggling small-town gas station attendant and aspiring singer, named Jodi Jackson, whose life is sent into a tailspin after a fatal crime.

As the film’s synopsis explains, “Cinnamon” centers on Jodi, “frustrated and stuck in a dead-end job with her dreams slipping away,” as she meets a young hustler who quickly becomes her fiercely devoted boyfriend (Iacono).

The clip shows the young couple, desperate to start a new life and jumpstart Jodi’s singing career, as they make the fateful decision to commit a crime together.

Village Roadshow Entertainment has made a wave of additions and promotions with Nic Gordon being elevated to Vice President of Feature Film for Village Roadshow Pictures (Vrp), and Anne MacKay is being named as a Creative Executive at Vrp. Elizabeth Elliott joins Vreg as Executive Vice President of Business Affairs. Gordon and MacKay will report to Jillian Apfelbaum and Tristen Tuckfield, Vrp’s Executive Vice Presidents of Feature Film. Elliot will report to Louis Santor, COO, Vreg.

Last December, Variety exclusively announced “Murder City” as one of the first films slated for Black Noir Cinema, a lineup of genre movies developed and produced by Village Roadshow and Tubi, which will exclusively debut on the Fox-owned free streaming platform.
