‘Gachiakuta’ Cannot Make It to the Top Despite Being a Breath of Fresh Air in Anime
Image
July of 2025 has seen plenty of anime releases, and with the return of Dandadan, newer series, like Gachiakuta, aren’t being given enough attention. Kei Urana’s story is one of the most unique to come out in recent times, but the competition is far too great.

Gachiakuta is a classic Shonen with a twist. Rudo Surebrec acts like a realistic teenager and was falsely accused of the murder of his adoptive father. He not only battles Trash Beasts, but stereotypes. It’s a gruesome but fun world, so why isn’t it getting as much attention as of late?

The heavy competition this month does not fare well for Gachiakuta. It’s refreshing, but it hasn’t offered anything that a series like Lord of Mysteries, The Summer Hikaru Died, or any other Shonen wouldn’t.

Gachiakuta’s Anime Adaptation Doesn’t Shine, Especially With 2025’s Roster

2025 has been an exciting year for anime,...

The Latest ‘Impractical Jokers’ Is Being Made In Lithuania
Image
Exclusive: The following program will contain graphic stupidity, as four friends compete to embarrass one another – only this time in Lithuania.

Impractical Jokers is being remade for Lithuania’s TV3 as a 24-episode, half-hour series – a deal we can reveal as Eastern European content event Nem kicks off today in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Production will begin later this year after TV3 closed a deal with format seller Warner Bros International Television Production. Reema Patel, Director of Formats at Wbitvp, brokered the agreement.

The hidden-camera prank shows sees four friends seek to embarrass one another through a series of outrageous dares, which could be anything from eating food from someone’s plate to deliberately making a bad impression at a speed-dating event. The least successful team members in each episode endures a final punishment.

The original TruTV series, created by comedy troupe The Tenderloins, has run to 11 seasons and more than 300 episodes,...

Gruesome Italian Stop-Motion Short ‘Playing God,’ Mexican CG Charmer ‘Nube’ Score Oscar Qualification With Animayo Gran Canaria Wins
Image
Spain’s Oscar-qualifying Animayo Gran Canaria animation festival has announced the winners of its 20th anniversary edition, marking two decades of championing animation, VFX and video game cinematics.

This year, an international jury composed of industry veterans from studios like Disney, Skydance and Rodeo FX evaluated 55 short films selected for competition across multiple official sections, which were whittled down by Animayo staff from an initial batch of over 2,000 entries from 84 countries.

The festival’s coveted Grand Jury Award went to “Playing God,” a grim stop-motion story by Italian director Matteo Burani. The film captivated the jury with its atmospheric intensity, masterful animation and sound design. As Spain’s only double Oscar-qualifying animation festival, Animayo’s top honors serve as a launchpad to the Academy Awards. In fact, 2025’s animated short Oscar winner, “In the Shadow of the Cyprus,” earned its initial Oscar qualification at last year’s Animayo.

Festival director...

The Return of the Living Dead (1985) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
1985 gave us one of the most important zombie movies of all time. It was a sequel to the movie that gave us zombies as we know them and probably signaled the end of the world on screen. Day of the Dead you say? As much as I love that slow-paced close-out to George Romero’s original trilogy, I’m talking about something a little different. I’m talking about running zombies that can’t be killed, rabid weasels, Burt and Ernie, partying when it’s party time, and a true return of the living dead. Dan O’Bannon horror comedy expertly walks the line between the two genres with genuine laughs and frightening thrills. It could have been a very different experience for audiences who now know it as a perfect summer horror film and celebrate July 3rd every year. It could have been more like the very obscure book it...

Exclusive interview: Ryan Kruger
Image
Ryan Kruger has a filmmaking career built on pushing boundaries and exploring the darker corners of genre cinema. Known for his bold visual style and his unique voice, Kruger first made waves with the cult hit Fried Barry (2020), which earned numerous accolades and cemented his place as a visionary in the South African film industry. Now, with his latest project Street Trash(2024), Kruger takes on the challenge of revisiting a beloved cult classic—Street Trash (1987)—while simultaneously charting a new course with a fresh narrative, a unique 2050 setting, and a blend of intense gore and meaningful storytelling. The film is a loose sequel, offering fans a chance to return to the bizarre, melting mayhem of the original but with Kruger’s distinct directorial vision.

Street Trash 2024 follows the dark and twisted adventures of a new set of characters as they grapple with societal collapse and the malevolent forces surrounding them.

Street Trash Review: Practical Effects Meet Social Commentary
Image
In terms of modern movies, Street Trash bravely reimagines the famous cult hit from 1987. The film Ryan Kruger directed moves the grotesque charm from New York City to a dystopian Cape Town, South Africa, amplifying its social critique in the face of pronounced class differences.

Street Trash embraces visceral body horror while elevating its narrative above simple shock value as both splatter cinema and social horror. Kruger uses horror to make a point about societal structures, reflecting current issues of inequality, much like modern filmmaker Greta Gerwig does.

The film’s framework isn’t linear, reflecting the characters’ crazy lives. It looks like a kaleidoscope of colors, and the surreal effects make the grotesque into interesting art. Kruger makes Street Trash a thought-provoking experience that sticks with you long after you’ve seen it by breaking the rules and delivering genre thrills.

Robert Lasardo’s American Trash marks both the directorial debut and a major change of pace for the prolific actor, whose first role was almost forty years ago in Abel Ferrara’s China Girl. Over the years he’s become known for roles in films like In Hell, Bridge of the Doomed and Amber Road, but he’s chosen to make a drama that trades physical brutality for an unflinchingly brutal look at pain, loss and the toll modern society can take on people.

‘Los Frikis’ Review: A Vibrant Drama Set in 1990s Cuba Spotlights Punk Rockers Who Took Extreme Measures to Survive
Image
Traveling through clandestine airwaves, Kurt Cobain touched down in Havana, Cuba, in the turbulent early 1990s. A time of dire economic hardship for the island nation after the fall of the Soviet Union, the “Special Period” pushed thousands of Cubans to migrate, risking their lives at sea. Those who stayed suffered through great scarcity (the U.S. embargo played its part). The grunge star never visited in person, but via the radios of locals illegally tuning in to stations from the U.S. after Fidel Castro banned rock music. One of those listeners, 18-year-old Gustavo (Eros de la Puente), will later try to cover Nirvana’s iconic song in the vibrant Spanish-language drama “Los Frikis,” from Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, the filmmakers behind the moving buddy movie “The Peanut Butter Falcon.”

Produced by Phil Lord (who is Cuban American) and Chris Miller, “Los Frikis” is based on the real-life...

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s “Polo” Docuseries Slammed As Complete Trash By Royal Family Expert
Image
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s “Polo” docuseries hasn’t exactly generated positive reviews. In fact, one royal expert and commentator, who calls herself “Brittany,” recently watched the show and had a lot to say, but none of it was favorable.

“Bloated, Boring, Unfocused, And Cruel”

While documentaries can be compelling, this one failed to educate and entertain.

According to Brittany, the docuseries is

“bloated, boring, unfocused, and cruel.”

Her main complaint was that the horses were treated cruelly.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s “Polo” Docuseries Slammed As Complete Trash By Royal Family Expert

Meghan, an advocate for animals and champion for UK animal charity Mayew, wants to make polo accessible. But in polo, the players bash the horses into each other. They are overworked and disrespected, which makes the sport inaccessible to most people. Meghan’s support of this endeavor is incredibly hypocritical.

Brittany even pointed out that centuries ago,...

‘Trash’s Revenge’ – Linnea Quigley Announces Her Own ‘Return of the Living Dead’ Sequel
Image
We learned just last week that the long-dormant Return of the Living Dead franchise will return next Christmas with a brand new sequel from Living Dead Media and director Steve Wolsh (Muck, Kill Her Goats). The Christmas-themed horror sequel is set in 1985, 18 months after the events of the original film, and you can watch the first teaser here.

Oddly enough, that’s not even the only Return of the Living Dead movie on the horizon. Remember that legal battle over the rights that we reported on this past summer? Well, it looks like the other party that had been competing with Living Dead Media on the rights (Rotld Originals LLC) has come up with their own sequel project, titled Trash’s Revenge.

While Living Dead Media’s sequel will not feature any returning actors from the 1985 horror-comedy classic, Trash’s Revenge is set to star Rotld actress Linnea Quigley. The...

Review: Street Trash (2024) is a Neon-Juicy Homage That Lacks Consistency
Image
Ryan Kruger's drip-nasty return to 1987's Street Trash lore isn't a remake, but an overseas sequel. South African class warfare brings a rebellious spirit and geopolitical weight to vile body meltdowns, like George A. Romero's unsubtle commentary meets Astron-6's unpredictable shenanigans. Kruger's splatterpunk vibes in Fried Barry translate into a neon-juicy homage to J. Michael Muro's top-tier 80s goop, but it's a tangled Hydra of story tangents, and each head isn't being fed properly. Shock-slop silliness expands horizons yet rambles incoherently, failing to deliver a character-driven Street Trash that'll give you more than a cheap buzz.

Greenpoint's junkyard denizens swap for Cape Town vagabonds, modern peasants abhorred by corrupt Mayor Mostert (Warrick Grier). Should the elected tyrant's wishes be granted, struggling displaced folks like upbeat Roland (Sean Cameron Michael) and his companion Chef (Joe Vaz) would be eradicated. They aren’t, not yet at least, so...

Paul Morrissey
Paul Morrissey, Underground Film Pioneer and Warhol Collaborator, Dies at 86
Paul Morrissey
Paul Morrissey, an influential director known for pushing boundaries with low-budget films of the 1960s and ’70s, died this week at age 86. Morrissey collaborated closely with Andy Warhol on several groundbreaking films made in New York City. He helped develop an experimental style of avant-garde cinema and gave platforms to LGBT and transgender performers at the Factory studio.

Morrissey directed movies like Flesh, Trash, and Heat during his collaboration with Warhol between 1965-1974. These movies, made for under $10,000 each, starred underground stars and explored taboo topics. They helped propel the career of actor Joe Dallesandro as well. Sadly, Morrissey’s partnership with Warhol ended over disputes about their shared creative work.

Beyond films, Morrissey also played a role in Warhol’s music projects. He assisted with the Velvet Underground as their early concerts fused music and multimedia art. Morrissey co-founded Interview Magazine too for a time. In later decades, he...

Paul Morrissey Dies: Experimental Filmmaker & Longtime Andy Warhol Collaborator Was 86
Image
Paul Morrissey, the avant-garde filmmaker who worked on Andy Warhol movies including Chelsea Girls, Flesh, Trash and others who also managed The Velvet Underground in the mid-1960s, died Monday. He was 86.

His archivist Michael Chaiken told The New York Times that Morrissey died of pneumonia in a Manhattan hospital.

Morrissey collaborated with Warhol on several ultralow-budget features focused on the NYC subculture, starting with 1965’s My Hustler through 1974’s Blood for Dracula aka Andy Warhol’s Dracula. Their experimental movies — on which Morrissey often served in roles also including cinematographer and editor — often featured non-pro actors including Joe Dallesandro and Candy Darling and generally were ad-libbed rather than scripted.

Their biggest commercial success — a relative term — was with Trash, the 1970 pic starring Dallesandro as and junkie gigolo and Holly Woodlawn as his wife. Other Morrissey-Warhol films include 1968’s Lonesome Cowboys and 1972’s Heat and Women in Revolt. The duo...

Paul Morrissey, Icon of NY Underground Cinema Behind ‘Trash,’ ‘Flesh’ and More Andy Warhol Films, Dies at 86
Image
Paul Morrissey, a fixture of New York’s cinema scene whose collaborations with Andy Warhol in the ’60s and ’70s reinvented the American underground and made local legends of amateur actors and transgender performers, died Monday at a hospital in Manhattan. He was 86.

Morrissey’s death was confirmed by archivist Michael Chaiken to the New York Times, which reported that the cause was pneumonia.

Warhol and Morrissey were first introduced in 1965, when the former had begun to tinker with experimental films in his infamous loft hub, dubbed The Factory. Working on budgets of under $10,000, the pair completed a series of features, reaching the most commercial success with a trilogy starring Warhol fixture and gay sex symbol Joe Dallesandro that consisted of “Flesh,” “Trash” and “Heat.” Warhol served as producer, while Morrissey’s cinéma vérité direction and largely ad-libbed scripts provided his leads, such as Dallesandro, Jackie Curtis, Holly Woodlawn and Viva,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger is certainly one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, whose claim to fame was through his iconic role in the Terminator franchise. While the bodybuilding champion was the bonafide talisman of the James Cameron films, he forged an excellent partnership with his co-star Linda Hamilton who played a pivotal role as Sarah Connor in the Terminator series. But Schwarzenegger was surprised to hear from his colleague that she was initially reluctant to pair up with him due to certain preconceived notions that she had about films and the actor.

The artist had lived in the city since the mid-1990s, famously working with the Athens-based Elephant 6 Recording Company before recently relocating to Vermont. ‘Aggro Dr1ft’ Review: Harmony Korine Plays With Our Heads in Hard Reset on Filmmaking Rules
Image
I have seen the future of cinema, and it is “Aggro Dr1ft,” a neon-hued outlaw eyegasm from the director of ”Spring Breakers.” There will likely never be another film like it. Even so, it’s clear that Harmony Korine’s immersive iridescent plunge into the world and psyche of a serial killer points the way down fresh avenues for the medium to explore.

This is the first movie I’ve seen that doesn’t feel like it was meant to be watched; instead, it was designed to wash over you — or maybe just to unspool on one of the many screens illuminated in your field of vision, while your focus ricochets between it and whatever else is competing for your attention. As Brian De Palma’s “Scarface” became a touchstone cultural reference for the immigrant and hip-hop communities, so too could “Aggro Dr1ft” connect with audiences who see themselves (or...

‘Hoard’ Review: An Audacious, Unsettling British Debut Announces a Singular Directing Talent
Image
In 1996, the British band Suede – or The London Suede as they’re known in the United States, thanks to a trademark lawsuit – released their third album, “Coming Up”, which opened with the song “Trash”. A catchy, breezy anthem for the downtrodden trying to find love and excitement in monotonous or outright dirty environments, “Trash” posits the potential for rebellion and individuality in stale English suburbia, where bonds of solidarity can form among people drawn to each other due to shared outsider status: “But we’re trash, you and me/ We’re the litter on the breeze/ We’re the lovers on the street.”

With its motif concerning garbage on the street, “Trash” could have been an all-too obvious needle drop in “Hoard”, a (mostly) mid-90s period piece set in the exact sort of humdrum British milieu evoked by Suede, with literal refuse playing a major part in the strange...

Impossible People by Julia Wertz
Image
It’s reductive and not quite true to say that this book is what Julia Wertz wanted Drinking at the Movies to be – but it’s a good enough place to start.

Drinking was her first full-length graphic novel after two collections of Fart Party stories; at the time, I thought it was more of a collage that it didn’t quite turn into a single narrative, but was definitely bigger and more ambitious that her previous work. It was also – I shudder to realize – published in 2010, almost fifteen years ago.

Impossible People , Wertz’s big new 2023 book, is her first memoir since Museum of Mistakes in 2018, which mostly collected older work. It’s odd to realize that: I think of Wertz as such an immediate, confessional cartoonist, her work so direct and plain-spoken. But those stories were mostly about that late-Aughts period; she hadn’t made any books about her thirties yet.

Here Are All the Reasons Why Streamers Love Removing Shows
Image
It’s no longer just David Zaslav, CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels, and a room full of ruthless Warner Bros. Discovery accountants swinging their Excel sheets like guillotines. Stream your bucket-list series and movies (note: 2008’s “The Bucket List” is only available on PVOD) while you still can — content removal is the new power move.

Last month, Paramount+ scrubbed shows “Inside Amy Schumer,” “From Cradle to Stage,” “Tell Me a Story,” “Ghislaine: Partner in Crime,” movies “Fantasy Football” and “Snow Day,” and a crop of Nickelodeon series from its archives, a source confirmed to IndieWire. The library purge followed the cancellation of “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” “Star Trek: Prodigy,” “The Game” and “Queen of the Universe,” all of which were also removed from the service.

In the current phase of the streaming wars, outspending is so tacky. Now it’s all about out-saving each other. It’s a practice in less is more,...

‘The Idol’ Is a Bomb for the Ages: The Winners and Losers of HBO’s Summer Disaster (Commentary)
Image
Sunday’s season (series?) finale of the HBO drama “The Idol” was the show’s best episode yet — but only a few reputations will survive this summer disaster.

Episode 5 saw characters put on some clothes and get out of pop star Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) house for once. Director Sam Levinson (“Euphoria”) showed some of the visual dazzle for which he is famous, with long shots that were practically Kubrickian. Dirtball Svengali Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) received a measure of comeuppance, even as the show continued to affirm his alleged brilliance.

It was the best episode of “The Idol,” meaning it will be the worst episode of television this week. Shapeless, stupid and too performatively erotic and shocking, the five-episode collaboration among Levinson, music superstar Tesfaye and Reza Fahim is one of the worst shows ever made.

Zendaya and Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Challengers’ to Skip France Theatrical Release, Debut on Prime Video
Image
While unveiling its slate of new French originals and acquisitions on Monday, Prime Video announced that it would skip a French theatrical release for “Challengers,” Luca Guadagnino’s anticipated tennis drama. The film, which stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and “West Side Story” star Mike Faist, will still be released in theaters in all other territories.

During a posh press event hosted at the Pavillon Royal on the outskirts of Paris, Brigitte Ricou-Bellan, Prime Video’s country managing director for France, said the strategic move by the Amazon streamer resulted from France’s notoriously strict windowing rules, which demands streamers to wait 15 to 17 months after a theatrical roll out before making a new film available on their services. The rule has led other studios to opt to skip French cinemas for new releases before, such as Disney’s decision to debut “Strange World” on streaming.

“We’re a strong partner for French cinema and well-established talent.
