Aby Media, Globo Partner on African Adaptations of Hit Brazilian Scripted Titles: Will Present Lineup at Mip Africa (Exclusive)

Upstart Ivorian production company Aby Media, founded by Bernard and Kimberley Azria and Brazilian powerhouse Globo, have unveiled a new production-distribution agreement for a slate of popular Globo scripted titles. Under the new deal, Aby Media will be authorized to produce and distribute local versions of several Globo shows in the territory.

Both Aby Media and Globo will be at this year’s Mip Africa in Cape Town, held from Sept. 2-4, where they will showcase their slate of formats.

Among the shows set to be adapted or distributed by Aby Media in Africa are “Pantanal,” “Total Dreamer,” “Shades of Sin” and “The Other Side of Paradise.” By producing local versions of the show, the partnership is intended to satisfy increasingly diverse demands from the audience.

Billie Piper, ‘The Great British Bake Off’ Land International Emmy Nominations

Billie Piper, “The Great British Bake Off” and “Derry Girl” have landed nominations at the 2023 International Emmy Awards.

The nominations, which were unveiled on Tuesday by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, are across 14 categories and span 20 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, Qatar, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the U.K.

Winners will be announced at the 51st International Emmy Awards Gala in New York City, on Nov. 20.

“The International Emmy competition is the pinnacle for recognizing excellence in television around the world,” said International Academy president and CEO Bruce Paisner. “We look forward to gathering the international television community in New York City, in November to recognize these outstanding programs and performances on our global stage.”

Sanfic Industria Goes to Cannes: Highlights

Bernardo Quesney’s “History and Geography” and Tomás González Matos’ “Breaking and Entering” are two of the titles screening May 20 at Cannes’ Marché du Film showcase, Sanfic Industria Goes to Cannes.

Two other films round out the selection; Andrew Sala’s “The Barbaric” from Argentina, and Esteban García’s Mexico-Columbia co-production “Back to the Sea of my Deseaced.”

All four titles screened at Sanfic Industria’s Works in Progress. The 2022 Cannes slate showcases powerful themes of violence, identity and corruption.

The Goes to Cannes sessions will run May 20-23 May. The curated selections will be presented at two-hour pitch sessions alongside teams who will introduce their films in front of an audience of industry execs and fest heads. The films in this section are in various stages of post-production, some seeking sales agents, distributors or festival selection.
