Exclusive: Jordana Brewster and Devon Sawa are boarding Spyglass’ original horror rom-com, Heart Eyes, which is currently in production in New Zealand.

They join previously announced Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding.

The Josh Ruben-directed, Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy-written feature follows a pair of co-workers in Seattle who are pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day. When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes, they’re mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. The duo are forced to spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.

Republic Pictures picked up distribution rights to Heart Eyes excluding the U.S. and Canada.

Landon and Divide/Conquer’s Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks are producing. Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone are EPs with Murphy and Mel Turner.

The cast also includes Gigi Zumbado. Zumbado’s previous credits include Kenya Barris’ multi-cam comedy Unrelated and recurring roles on ABC’s Promised Land and Fox’s 9-1-1. Zumbado stars opposite Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorff in the indie feature The Price We Pay.

Brewster has starred in the $6 billion plus grossing Fast & Furious franchise as Mia Torretto. Sawa starred on the Syfy series Chucky alongside Jennifer Tilly and as Jean Smart’s hunky love interest in Hacks for Max. Sawa was on the hit CW show Nikita alongside Maggie Q. The Vancouver, Canada native broke out as a child actor in such movies as Casper, Now and Then, and Little Giants. The assailant suspected to have attacked Wednesday actor Steve Buscemi has been captured. This update follows Buscemi getting randomly attacked earlier this month while walking outside in Manhattan.

Per CBS New York, police have arrested Clifton Williams, a homeless 50-year-old man, in relation to the attack. Williams was charged on Friday in New York City. The arrest followed Williams allegedly walking into a local police station on May 13 to report that he'd had property stolen the previous week. Officers recognized the man as the suspect they were searching for and promptly took Williams into custody.

Now, more than a year after the project wrapped production, we finally know when we’re going to have the chance to see it: Variety reports that IFC Films and the Shudder streaming service have picked up the U.S. distribution rights, with IFC planning to give the film a theatrical release on April 26th. It will then move to Shudder at a later date. Elevation Pictures will be handling Canadian distribution.

Written and produced by Michael Sparaga of Victory Man Productions, Humane is described as a “dystopian satire” takes place over the course of a single day, months after a global environmental collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population.

If you are a comic book reader who has a long flight coming up, writer Jimmy Palmiotti has one humble suggestion. He is offering hundreds of pages’ worth of his comics at a steep discount as part of a sale that see proceeds go to the World Wildlife Fund.

“It can get you from Japan and back from the east coast,” Palmiotti says with a laugh of the hefty reading material, available via the service Humble Bundle, which allows buyers to adjust how much of the proceeds to go charity and how much go to creators like Palmiotti.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that Matt Johnson’s BlackBerry is one of the best English Canadian films in a long time. When I interviewed Jay Baruchel about the film a few weeks ago, I prefaced our conversation by telling him this and that I wasn’t sucking up to him. Baruchel got it, as the big problem with a lot of English Canadian films is that they present to be something they’re not. They’re often set in this pseudo-us style setting, as for some reason, Canadian producers seem terrified that a film will be recognized as what it is, Canadian. As he told me in our interview, this is something that has irked Baruchel for years, and in his own films, including the two Goon movies and the recent Random Acts of Violence, they never hid the fact that they were Canadian.

Exclusive: Dianne Doan (Warrior) and Connor Paolo (Revenge) have been cast as leads in Better Half, a surreal romantic comedy marking the feature directorial debut of Patrick Henry Phelan.

Pic’s plot is being kept under wraps, but it’s describe as a stylized feature set in Joshua Tree, CA.

Jay Baruchel doesn’t give up easily.

The actor spent a decade trying to get “Random Acts of Violence,” his twisty look at a serial killer whose murder spree is inspired by comic books, made. Part of the problem, Baruchel admits, is that he wanted to direct a straight-up horror film, which puzzled backers who associated the actor with his roles in comedies like “This is the End” or “Tropic Thunder.”

The hesitation may also have been related to the fact that “Random Acts of Violence” seems equally interested in unsettling its viewers by examining the moral quandaries surrounding all the on-screen bloodletting, while raising questions about the responsibility artists have when it comes to depicting cinematic carnage. Hello everyone! We’re back to give you the lowdown on another week of home media releases, and while we don’t have a ton of titles on tap, there are still a few key releases genre fans are going to want to pick up this Tuesday.

If you missed it during its run on HBO, you can finally catch up with the first season of Lovecraft Country, as Warner Bros. is bringing it home on both Blu-ray and DVD. Jay Baruchel’s Random Acts of Violence is also headed to both formats this week, or if you’re in the mood for something a little more old school, both The Unseen and Slithis are getting the Blu-ray treatment on Tuesday as well.

Clayne Crawford and filmmaker Robert Machoian will re-team on “The Integrity of Joseph Chambers,” a drama about a family man who must learn to hunt in order to provide for his family. The film is Crawford and Machoian’s second collaboration, following “The Killing of Two Lovers,” a marital drama that premiered to smashing reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Neon bought “The Killing of Two Lovers,” and is planning a February release, which will allow it to qualify for awards. Production on “The Integrity of Joseph Chambers” has begun in Alabama.

Jordana Brewster, Michael Raymond-James and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will also appear in the film.

Machoian wrote the screenplay with Crawford in mind to play the lead role. Set in the midst of our current economic crisis, the story focuses on a husband and father, Joe (Crawford) who finds that it’s more difficult than he expected to kill his own food.

This week, yet another fantastic horror film is headed to Shudder—Jay Baruchel’s Random Acts of Violence—and I cannot recommend it enough. An adaptation of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray’s graphic novel of the same name, the film follows comic creator Todd (Jesse Williams) and his closest collaborators as they take a road trip from Canada to New York. Along the way, Todd must reconcile the violence he brings to the page when his creation “Slasherman,” which is based on a real-life serial killer, ends up tracking the group during their travels, and finds his own gruesome sense of inspiration as he gets closer and closer to Todd, where real life and fantasy clash in the most horrific of ways.

The Violent Bear It Away: Baruchel Turns Murder into Art with Fragmented Debut

An exercise which navigates the oft-blurred lines between art and exploitation, actor Jay Baruchel turns to the director’s seat with his debut Random Acts of Violence, adapted from the graphic novel by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti.

Although it features Jesse Williams in a lead performance and mines some interesting subtexts, there’s an overall sense of incompleteness to a narrative which can’t quite deliver on the moody, self-reflexiveness it promises.

Todd (Williams) is the successful author of a violent comic book series, “Slasherman,” which details the rampage of the I-90 killer, a criminal who was never apprehended but left many victims from 1987 to 1991.…...

Known to many for his on-camera work in comedies like Tropic Thunder and This Is the End, or of course for his indelible vocal performance in How to Train Your Dragon – it’s a great and fascinating thing to see Jay Baruchel further his filmmaking career from behind the lens, in horror movie Random Acts of Violence.

We caught up with the director on Zoom, as he discusses the project with us, and how he has always felt directing was his future. On that note he speaks intelligently on the notion of responsibility, particularly when depicting graphic violence on screen. He comments on the underrated nature of the horror genre, and what he has lined up in the future.

IFC Films has scooped U.S. rights to David Bowie glam-rock origin film “Stardust,” starring actor and musician Johnny Flynn (“Emma”) as the music icon.

Directed by Gabriel Range and co-written with Christopher Bell, “Stardust” is set in 1971, when a 24-year-old Bowie embarks on his first trip to America, only to be met with a world not yet ready for him. The film chronicles the young David Bowie’s first visit to the U.S. in 1971 – a trip that inspired the invention of his iconic alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

The 2020 Tribeca Film Festival entry will have its physical world premiere at the Rome Film Festival in October 2020. IFC Films plans to release the film in Q4, 2020.

Horror movies can easily get lost going down a path of just being a gore-fest or just being one big metaphor. The most successful efforts in the genre manage to do more than one thing, or at least aren’t completely simple to pin down. Jay Baruchel’s second outing behind the camera, the horror flick Random Acts of Violence, manages to do this with aplomb. Not only is it gnarly and gory, it’s peddling a message, one rooted in the creative process. Almost a decade after he first began to try to bring this story to the screen, it’s now coming out on Shudder and is well worth your time. On its most superficial horror flick level, Jay Baruchel’s latest directorial effort Random Acts of Violence works. Co-adapted with Jesse Chabot from Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti’s 2010 graphic novel of the same name, the story sees Slasherman comic creator Todd (Jesse Williams) hitting the road from Toronto to New York City with his wife (Jordana Brewster’s Kathy), assistant (Niamh Wilson’s Aurora), and business partner (Baruchel’s Ezra) in advance of a Comic-Con appearance. Sometimes Just Sometimes Fest is a multimedia fortnight built around one of my favourite movies, The Crow. The spectre of tragedy looms over that film because of what happened [star Brandon Lee was killed in an accident on set] but it’s still a pretty spectacular landmark in cinema – stylish, harsh, moving, deeply earnest in the best way – and the single best superhero movie.

After keeping the horror genre alive and well in South Florida during the Covid-19 pandemic, the hard-working team behind the Popcorn Frights Film Festival is closing out their Drive-In Horrorshow summer screening series in safety and style on Friday, August 14th with the world premiere of the Caroline Williams-starring Ten Minutes to Midnight and the Southeast US premiere of filmmaker Jay Baruchel’s new horror movie Random Acts of Violence.

The double feature screening will also include the world premieres of Mathew and Nathaniel Barber’s short film No One is Coming and Zach Wincik and Danny Salemme’s short film Cottonmouth.

Random Acts of Violence is an indie horror feature from director Jay Baruchel and writer Jesse Chabot. The film is slated for a Summer release on Digital and on Shudder. The film stars: Jesse Williams (The Cabin in the Woods), Jordana Brewster and Simon Northwood. Called a "labour of love" by Baruchel, this title focuses on a road trip and a crazed fan. To show later in July, the film's official poster and Red Band trailer are here. Baruchel has talked about the script-writing process. He says of the script for Random Acts of Violence and the process of writing the script has taken close to seven years. Art imitation life of life imitating art? That's the question at the centre of writer/director Jay Baruchel's latest project Random Acts of Violence.

Adapted from Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti's comic book of the same title, Random Acts of Violence stars Jesse Williams as Todd and Baruchel as Ezra, the creators of "Slasherman," a hugely popular horror comic. The pair are working on their latest volume but Todd is experiencing writer's block so as a way to get the creative juices flowing, the pair, along with their girlfriends, head out on a road trip in search of inspiration but during the trip, they start to notice that their books might be inspiring murder and chaos.

The biopic is set to chronicle the life of famed scientist Nikola Tesla, who is responsible for alternating-current, which paved the way for the modern age in many ways. Ethan Hawke is playing the iconic figure in the drama which, per the studio, "like it's subject, defies convention." As we can see from the trailer, that statement seems to be rather accurate.

The trailer kicks off by presenting Ethan Hawke as Nikola Tesla, "the greatest inventor of the age." We then get a feel for the unique way the biopic is being presented.
