Italian sales agent racks up deals during busy Cannes market.

Italian sales agent The Open Reel has scored North American deals for three titles on its slate: Swsx-prize winner A Place Of Our Own, Julián Hernández’s The Trace Of Your Lips and Dennis Shinners’s Barrio Boy.

Indian drama A Place Of Our Own by grassroots group Ektara Collective has been acquired by Dark Star Pictures for North America. Set in Bhopal, the drama follows two trans women as they seek to find alternative accommodation when their landlord evicts them without notice. It won the global audience award at Swsx in March.

The Weeknd is going for the hat trick.

Over the weekend, the Ottawa Sun reported that the Canadian artist has joined a bit to purchase the NHL’s Ottawa Senators.

The singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, has partnered on the bid with Toronto billionaires Jeffrey and Michael Kimel of the Harlo Capital Group .

According to the report, The Weeknd has committed to being financially involved in the Kimels’ pitch to buy the team.

But The Weeknd is only the latest celebrity to make a play to become an owner of the hockey team.

The Open Reel Unveils First Trailer for ‘Last Summer of Nathan Lee,’ Reveals Multiple Sales on Slate Titles (Exclusive)

International sales agency The Open Reel has unveiled the first trailer for director-producer Quentin Lee’s “Last Summer of Nathan Lee.”

Inspired by a real life incident from Lee’s high school years, the film follows the titular Nathan Lee, a teenager who finds out that he has brain cancer just before he turns 18, vows to live the remains of his life with passion and refuses to die a virgin.

The cast includes Harrison Xu, Matthew Mitchell Espinosa, Natasha Tina Liu, Aaron Guest and Dru Perez. The film is produced by Lee’s Margin Films, with screenwriter Dennis Escobedo and casting director Kit DeZolt also serving as producers alongside Lee.

“Last Summer of Nathan Lee” will have its world premiere at The Center for Asian American Media (Caam)’s CAAMFest 2023, which will take place from May 11 to 21.

Meanwhile, The Open Reel has also closed a number of sales on its slate titles.

Tribeca LGBTQ Title ‘Petit Mal’ Sells to Dark Star Pictures for North America (Exclusive)

Los Angeles-based Dark Star Pictures has acquired North American distribution rights to Colombia-based Spanish director Ruth Caudeli’s Tribeca title “Petit Mal” from Italian sales company The Open Reel.

“Petit Mal,” in which Caudeli also stars, is centered around three young women, Martina, Laia, and Anto, who are in a passionate, playful three-way relationship — the dynamic of which is reshaped when one is called away for a long-term project.

The pic, which premieres in Tribeca’s Viewpoints section, is loosely based on the director’s personal life experiences.

“Petit Mal” is Caudeli’s third feature segueing from her exploration of somewhat similar themes in “Eva + Candela” (2017), in which a female filmmaker falls in love with her leading lady, and “Second Star on the Right” (2019), about a 30-something bisexual woman who refuses to grow up.
