The Way Back

4/10

Great potential but conflicting tones

I watched the wayback at the eden cinema last January and have some mixed opinions about it all.

The series starts out very strong with an amazing sequence which had a strong emotional impact and created quite intrigue. Unfortunately, I find that it was the highlight of all of the episodes and the quality decreased with time. Despite this, it still contained a major flaw that was present throughout the following episodes, the sound design. A lot of scenes were hard to understand, with the music overpowering the dialogue. Furthermore, some sound effects used, especially in the fight scene in the end, sounded very fake and out of place thus making it harder to engage in.

The cinematography, although occasionally beautiful, was inconsistent. Some scenes looked absolutely amazing whilst others were either too flat or were way too dark to a point where you could not understand what was happening on screen.

Lastly, my biggest complaint is the writing. The science fiction elements were not explained well and left me confused on how time travel worked in this universe. The characters were decently written but the humour constantly ruined any sense of drama or tension in the show. There were a lot of moments, especially near the end, which try to deal with high stakes but end up falling flat due to a character trying to crack a joke out of the blue.

Despite my complaints, I still had a fairly fun time watching it and I admire the studio's ambitions. I am interested in how the series will continues in the future and I wish the team the best of luck.
