As a Taiwanese in a foreign country, this movie reminds me of my home town more than I think. With all the joys and tears, this movie is just so TAIWAN! Not exaggerated, this movie brings the way we live, we feel, we care, and we earn for life. You might not be a Taiwanese somehow, but you'll just get to know more about this island,Taiwan. Not just the goods, the movie also showed the bads and darkness in Taiwan's society. However, movies always lead to a happy ending and that's why we wish for too. If you love Taiwan, you're so gonna watch this movie. If you don't, you'll just change your opinion after this! Enjoy this comedy with laughter and tear!
I hadn't heard about this 2011 Taiwanese movie titled "Night Market Hero" (aka "Ji pai ying xiong") from writers Bamboo Chu-Sheng Chen, Tan-Ching Yeh, Tien-Lun Yeh and Yi-Wen Yen.
But I was given the chance now in 2020 to sit down and watch it, and of course I did so without hesitation, given my love of the Asian cinema.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie, but given the title, I was somewhat mesmerized because I used to love the night markets when I lived in Hong Kong, so this was a bit of a trip down memory lane in a way.
Well, turns out that "Night Market Hero" wasn't an outstanding movie, and I wasn't particularly entertained by the storyline. In fact, I ended up turning off the movie with only 20 minutes to go before it ended. I had just grown indifferent to the storyline.
I will say that the characters in the movie were good, especially the vendors at the night market. And they did have some nice talents to portray these characters. Just a shame that they had so precious little to work with in terms of script and at the hands of director Tien-Lun Yeh.
My rating of "Night Market Hero" lands on a very bland and mediocre five out of ten stars.
