The show became a bona fide hit on Britain’s Channel 4 before being acquired by Netflix, where it gained global appeal due to its wholesome spirit and whimsical themes. So when did everything get so mismatched? We’re sorting out the confusion below… and at the risk of starting another Revolutionary War, let us just say this is perhaps the only time the British custom of calling TV seasons “series” makes things clearer.

Channel 4 Content Chief On Swooping For Gaza Doc Ditched By The BBC: “Where Others Bottle It, We Broadcast It”
Image
In an “increasingly timid broadcasting environment,” Channel 4 content boss Ian Katz has said the network is going where rivals are refusing to go.

Speaking at last night’s annual dinner at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Katz flagged recent documentaries Gaza: Doctors Under Attack and 1000 Men and Me: The Bonnie Blue Story as proof that Channel 4 is taking risks while others “reach for international formats and reboots.”

“Where others bottle it, we broadcast it,” said Katz, flagging the Gaza: Doctors Under Attack saga as an exemplar.

Produced by ex-Channel 4 News boss Ben de Pear, Gaza: Doctors Under Attack was initially forged for the BBC but was dropped by the corporation over the risk of “creating a perception of partiality” after its director criticized Israel on the Today programme. This came amid the separate Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone scandal, which impacted the BBC for months.

Prue Leith Recalls the ‘Awful’ Grief of Losing Her 1st Husband, Shares Their Unique Love Story

Prue Leith and her first husband Rayne Kruger’s love story is one for the ages. The Great British Baking Show star opened up about her late spouse on the Tuesday, August 12, episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson‘s Dinner’s on Me podcast. While reflecting on his 2002 death at the age of 80, Leith said the grief she suffered was “awful.” “When the old queen [Queen Elizabeth II] was talking about loss, I think she was talking about Prince Philip‘s death, she said, ‘Grief is the price you pay for love,'” Leith shared. “And it’s the very exact price. If you love somebody a lot, the grief is horrific.” She went on to note that, unlike herself, Kruger was “very reclusive,” which led them to purchase a farmhouse in the English countryside that was “miles from anyone else.” During their marriage, Leith said she and Kruger made it...

In the recent Stand Up To Cancer special, Caroline Waldegrave, the managing director of Leiths School of Food and Wine, stepped in to place Leith. Reports followed that chef Cherish Finden will serve as a judge on next year’s special, taking over from Leith. The popular TV star, who turned 85 in February, also...

‘Bake Off’ Champion Presenter Nadiya Hussain Announces On Social Media The BBC Have Axed Cookery Series
Image
One of the BBC’s best known TV chefs has announced that her cookery show has been cancelled by the broadcaster.

Nadiya Hussain – a former champion on popular TV baking competition The Great British Bake Off – has made several series for the BBC, including Nadiya Bakes, Nadiya’s Fast Flavours and Nadiya’s Simple Spices.

However, the presenter took to Instagram Thursday to announce:

“The BBC have decided that they didn’t want to commission a show. And for me, that was a huge turning point because it’s something I’ve done for the past 10 years.

“I was already on this steady trajectory of change and I was thinking about where I wanted my career to go, and when the BBC decided they didn’t want to commission the show anymore, it really did kind of solidify everything for me, and it made me dig my heels in and think ‘Ok,...

Channel 4 Says It Doesn’t Use NDAs, But Documents Reveal Company Is Curbing Free Speech Of Aggrieved Ex-Employees
Image
Exclusive: Channel 4 once described itself as the “sponsor and defender of free speech,” but a cache of documents seen by Deadline reveals it is restricting what aggrieved former staffers can say about the company.

Deadline has analyzed 61 settlement deals signed by former staff members who exited Channel 4 amid an employment dispute between 2017 and 2021. Channel 4 paid out nearly £5M ($6.7M) to these ex-employees to prevent complaints escalating, but in doing so, stipulated that they do not discuss matters relating to the company.

All but two of the 61 settlement deals contained confidentiality and non-disparagement clauses that transparency campaigners consider to be non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). This is despite Channel 4 repeatedly saying that it never uses NDAs to cover up wrongdoing.

Details about the settlement deals, disclosed by Channel 4 under Freedom of Information laws, come as UK lawmakers have raised concerns about the entertainment industry’s use of NDAs amid the drafting of a new Employment Rights Bill.

Modern Family’s Most Unforgivable Sin Is Making One Character the Poster Child of Incest
Image
Modern Family gave us laughs, chaos, and a whole lot of “aww” moments, but even the best sitcoms have their what were they thinking?! moments. And this one’s a doozy. The show made a weird move that we fans can’t quite shake off: turning one poor character into the walking punchline for an accidental incest storyline.

It’s the kind of cringe that sneaks up on you, sticks around, and makes you question how it even got past the writers’ room. Let’s talk about Modern Family’s most awkward legacy.

Modern Family’s Manny’s “mature” crushes took a seriously awkward turn Rico Rodriguez as older Manny in Modern Family | Credits: 20th Century Fox Television

Modern Family really went there: turning Manny Delgado into the poster child for… accidental incest vibes. Seriously, he once tried to flirt with his own aunt. In another scene, he’s making googly eyes at his nieces.

Channel 4 Executive Pay Rockets 32% As Content Spend Falls To Lowest Level Since Pandemic
Image
Channel 4 executive pay increased by nearly a third last year, despite the UK commercial broadcaster slashing content spend and jobs.

The network behind The Great British Bake Off and Gogglebox had a steady year in 2024, with revenue inching up 1% to £1.04B ($1.39B) and its pre-tax deficit being reduced by £50M to £2M.

Channel 4 rewarded its top team with pay packets totalling nearly £2.9M last year, which was an increase of 32% on 2023 and the second-highest level in 15 years, per the company’s annual report.

Outgoing CEO Alex Mahon’s earnings rocketed 44% to £1.3M, including a £544,000 bonus, which was more than double her variable pay in 2023.

At the same time, Channel 4’s total content spend stood at £643M, which was down 3% year-on-year and was at its lowest level since the pandemic turbulence of 2020.

Channel 4 said 2024 was a “challenging” year, in which it was forced to make “tough but necessary” decisions to cut costs.

Channel 4 Engages Headhunter To Find In-House Production Chief
Image
Exclusive: Channel 4’s plans to move into in-house production are heating up.

Deadline hears that the UK commercial network behind The Great British Bake Off has engaged a headhunter to identify an executive to lead the unnamed unit.

Ibison, the search company run by former Ymu talent agent Nicola Ibison, is overseeing the external recruitment process and has begun approaching potential candidates.

Channel 4 is open-minded about the job title for the new in-house chief, believing that the preference of the successful candidate will be an important factor.

A source said Channel 4 is looking for an executive who sits one rung below big production hitters, such as Sony boss Wayne Garvie or Jane Turton, the All3Media CEO.

The role will report into chief operating officer Jonathan Allan, who is poised to step up to interim CEO when Alex Mahon exits Horseferry Road in the coming weeks.

Channel 4’s move into production is a significant step,...
