St. Patrick's Day is a traditional Irish holiday, but it's also become a big part of pop culture with sitcom episodes and horror movies themed around the day. Although movies such as Leprechaun immediately come to mind when picturing St. Patrick's Day horror, there are several lesser-known gems in the subgenre that build upon the story Mark Jones created. Many horror movies with St. Patrick's Day-related themes include the involvement of leprechauns.
Leprechauns as present in horror movies stem from the Celtic folklore of "lobaircin", who were said to be small-bodied men that used trickery to guard their treasures. While the leprechaun has become the standard for horror films of this kind, recent filmmakers have explored other avenues of terror for the otherwise cheerful holiday. Many of the St. Patrick's Day horror movies are simply set on that day, like so many horror movies set on Christmas Day centering on the holiday,...

While the rest of the world is seemingly falling apart, there are some constants that we can hold onto. One of these is that Syfy will use St. Patrick’s Day to share at least one Leprechaun-themed movie, and this March 17th they’re doubling down by showing both 2018’s Leprechaun Returns and 2012’s Leprechaun’s Revenge. While the latter film isn’t actually part of the main Leprechaun franchise, Syfy’s theme means that audiences will be able to see the two titles alternate from 8pm to 4am Est.
The Steven Kostanski-directed Leprechaun Returns was the better-regarded attempt to relaunch the long-running series in the 2010s, coming after the mixed reception for 2014’s Leprechaun: Origins. Kostanski, who partnered with Jeremy Gillespie for the excellent 2016 horror film The Void, did a decent job of bringing the Leprechaun franchise back to basics. Although Warwick Davis doesn’t appear as the Leprechaun,...

Donning the cape and tights to play a big screen superhero was often seen as career suicide for actors. This idea is mined to brilliant effect in Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman, with a former comic book star looking to relaunch his career with an ambitious Broadway play.
Adding extra spice to Birdman is the casting of Michael Keaton, himself a former Batman whose post-tights career has been somewhat hit and miss. This film, however, is a stunning reminder of just how good an actor Keaton is and proof that careers don't end when on-screen superpowers fade away.
Digital Spy takes a look at 20 ex-superhero stars to see how they fared after leaving an iconic comic book role behind.

Note: if you saw Leprechaun's Revenge on Syfy earlier this year then you've already seen Red Clover. It just has a new title and some decent gore tossed back in.
The Syfy Channel churns out so many low-budget movies that it's really easy to lose track of them all -- and it's particularly difficult to recall the titles of the ones that aren't 100% disposable junkpiles suitable only for late-night inebriated visitations. Budget is the key problem with most of the Syfy movie fare, but sometimes (no, frequently) a low budget is what inspires fun-loving filmmakers to get a little more creative. That's not to say that their recent release Red Clover (aka Leprechaun's Revenge, although it bears no relation to the "official" Leprechaun franchise) is any sort of minor masterpiece -- but, like early Syfy releases Scream of the Banshee, Zombie Apocalypse, High Plains Invaders, and Frankenfish, it finds a...

Well over a year after it aired on SyFy, the Drew Daywalt-directed Red Clover (aka Leprechaun's Revenge) is making its way to DVD under the After Dark Original banner.
Billy Zane, William Devane, Kelly Washington, Courtney Halverson, Azure Parsons, Matty Ferraro and Kevin Mangold star. Why the film carries two titles, we don't know, but you can find it on DVD October 22nd. You'll find the cover art after the jump.
Sixty-six years ago, the town of Irish Channel in Louisiana was the site of a horrible massacre on St. Patrick's Day. Some blame a terrible storm that blew through the town, but those that were there don't speak of the truth. Due to petty superstitions, St. Patrick's Day festivities were banned for the last 66 years, but now, the new Mayor wants to tempt fate and celebrate.

We know our stuff when it comes to horror movies. From the indie bizarre to the Hollywood blockbuster, we've got this stuff covered. We are also ridiculously happy about all the mainstream media coverage of Sharknado. But did you know this is not the first on-screen Sharknado sighting?
There's no doubt the title alone of Anthony C. Ferrante's Sharknado just begs to be remembered. How could you not, right? Since we saw the movie weeks ago, the title has been nagging at us. We knew we'd heard that moniker before. Turns out we were exactly right.
In 2012 the Syfy channel aired the After Dark Original film Leprechaun's Revenge, also known as Red Clover, which was directed by Dread Central favorite Drew Daywalt and written by Sharknado director Ferrante, there was a line that literally announces the coming of Sharknado. Emmy-nominated writer/director and FEARnet’s own School of Fear blogger Drew Daywalt is writing and directing a new feature-length film, The Passengers. Daywalt is behind awesome shorts like Bedfellows, Polydeus, Jack and The Laundromat.

Many people groan when it comes to Syfy's original movie lineup, but filmmaker Drew Daywalt is the kind of guy you want creating outlandish creature features. The founder of Daywalt Fear Factory and director of MTV horror-comedy series Death Valley (he also writes a great column for our friends at FEARnet) will be making his Syfy original movie premiere on the greenest day of the year — St. Patrick's Day. Tomorrow at 9 Pm Eastern, Daywalt's Leprechaun's Revenge — starring Billy Zane (The Roommate, Titanic), William Devane (Revenge, 24), and others — will tell the tale of a small town in Massachusetts being ravaged by a decades-old curse. The trailer for the Drew Daywalt directed Leprechaun's Revenge is here, and it actually looks kinda fun in a really goofy way. You only get a few creature shots here and there in this piece, but it readily shows off its ensemble and SyFy charm. Billy Zane (Titanic) stars alongside William Devane, Kelly Washington, Courtney Halverson, Azure Parsons, Matty Ferraro and Kevin Mangold. In the film, "Sixty-six years ago the town of Irish Channel in Louisiana was the site of a horrible massacre on St. Patrick's Day. SyFy's latest creature, Leprechaun's Revenge, is coming - of course - on March 17th and the first trailer has been released.
Starring Billy Zane and William Devane, the story picks up days before the annual St. Patrick's Day parade. A teenage girl unwittingly unleashes a murderous leprechaun upon the citizens of a small town. The creature goes on a violent rampage, slaughtering descendants of the original settlers who stole its gold. Now the girl and her family have four days to kill the leprechaun – otherwise she will die from the leprechaun curse.
Leprechaun’s Revenge is a production of After Dark Films and was scripted by Anthony C. Ferrante (Scream of the Banshee). Kelly Washington, Courtney Halverson, Azure Parsons, Matty Ferraro and Kevin Mangold also star.
Drew Daywalt directs and, honestly, this looks like it's a cut above the usual SyFy fare.

Director, and our own resident blogger, Drew Daywalt is busy in post-production editing his next film, Red Clover. Check out who will be starring after the jump. According to IMDb, actors William Devan and Billy Zane will star in Red Clover, along with Death Valley's Courtney Halverson and Azure Parsons, and the adorable Kelly Washington, Glenn Warner, and, as the leprechaun, Kevin Mangold. Last October, we were the first to tell you Drew Daywalt was embarking on a feature film after having successfully terrorized folks with his slew of scary short films and episodes of MTV's Death Valley. At the time, this project was merely known as St. Patrick's Day Leprechaun, or as it was going out as at the American Film Market, Leprechaun. Of course, the latter title leads you to believe the film is a remake of the Warwick Davis film...which it is not.
Daywalt's production is an original script penned by Anthony C. Ferrante and is part of the After Dark Originals slate for this year. After the jump, you'll discover the new title for his film along with the cast members involved.
