Filmmaker Joe Swanberg was a major figure in the mumblecore film movement, and as the years have gone by he has also earned several credits in the horror genre, whether by taking acting roles in films like A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next, The Sacrament, and Blackout, or by directing the werewolf movie Silver Bullets and contributing a segment to the anthology film V/H/S. Now Swanberg has increased his number of horror credits by five, as Deadline reports that he has teamed with Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman of Yale Entertainment to produce a slate of five horror films – all of which have already wrapped filming! Four of the titles are Helldorado, Kenneled, Yellow Eyes, and Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round. The fifth movie is currently simply known as the Untitled Jae Matthews Project.

It’s been eight years since Amy Seimetz directed her first feature, “Sun Don’t Shine,” and her second film, “She Dies Tomorrow,” carries her imprint. Both films pull you into an off kilter, menacing dreamscape where unreliable characters are capable of doing just about anything. Appropriately enough, her film was my last press screening before lockdown.
Recovering alcoholic Amy (Seimetz alter ego Kate Lyn Sheil) rattles around her empty new Los Angeles house, hugging the floor, dropping the needle over and over on a Mozart requiem, and slugging back wine. When she gets a friend (Jane Adams) to come over, she tells her, “I’m going to die tomorrow.” Her friend starts to feel the same foreboding, and passes the contagion to her brother (Chris Messina) and his wife (Katie Aselton) at a birthday party. It shares the same absurdist and morbid humor as Luis Bunuel.

It’s altogether fitting that “She Dies Tomorrow” was scheduled to have its world premiere at a film festival that was canceled, South by Southwest, because Amy Seimetz’s indie drama is definitely a movie for this particular, strange and scary time. Seimetz didn’t know it when she made the film, of course, but a movie based on a pervasive sense of all-encompassing dread that spreads from person to person is pretty much right in tune with the prevailing mood of 2020.
It’s a movie about existential panic that happens to be coming out at a time of, well, existential panic. That might make it the last thing some people want to see at this point, or it might make it a disquieting indie thrill ride through a dysfunctional world that isn’t really ours but kind of feels like it.

Stephen King is one of the most popular and successful horror writers of all time. You'd think Hollywood wouldn't have such a hard time translating his many novels and short stories to film, but for every "The Shining" there seem to be five "Maximum Overdrives" or "Silver Bullets."
Still, King's work has spawned some legitimate Hollywood classics. As Hulu's "11/22/63" is about to launch, and as we wait to see the long-gestating adaptation of his "Dark Tower" saga, here are the top five Stephen King adaptations of all-time, on both the small and big screens.

Joe Swanberg, known and loved for his “micro-budget” indie dramas, has been making further steps into the mainstream and is set to direct Work Wife. The script, written by Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins of ABC’s Trophy Wife (2013), promises to be full of the “delightfully un-sitcomy-y performances” that defined Trophy Wife . The ABC sitcom was cancelled after one season, but not for lack of quality. One issue that stymied a fan following was the misplaced ironic title, Trophy Wife, for a complex show about intelligent funny women, relationships, divorce, and overall debunking the sitcom tropes that reduce women to clichés.
Although some fans of Swanberg’s indie dramas Kissing on the Mouth (2005), Nights and Weekends (2008), and Silver Bullets (2009), might lament this step, Swanberg actually seems well suited to do the project. Drinking Buddies (2013) centered on the messy romances between colleagues and almost all of Swanberg’s films deal with...

The incredibly prolific Joe Swanberg, whose most recent film "Happy Christmas" recently premiered at Sundance, will be the subject of weekend retrospective at the Museum of Moving Image in Queens, New York. The filmmaker will be present at all of the screenings. The series, titled "A Swanberg Sampler," will feature six of his films: "Hannah Takes the Stairs" (2007), "Nights and Weekends" (2008), "Silver Bullets" (2011), "Art History" (2011), "Uncle Kent (2011), and "All the Light in the Sky" (2013). You’ve probably seen his work before.
Director Joe Swanberg is best known for directing “Drinking Buddies” last year that starred Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson and Anna Kendrick. He was one of the collaborators in the cult favorite horror compilation “V/H/S” with the segment called “The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger.”
And maybe you’ve seen him on the big screen like the recent horror thriller “You’re Next,” in which he played as one the family victims.
Swanberg made his directorial debut with the 2005’s indie film “Kissing on the Mouth,” a film about recent college graduates on sex. And then he followed up with “Lol,” that starred with Greta Gerwig. With Gerwig, they further collaborated with 2007’s “Hannah Takes the Stairs” and 2008’s “Night and Weekends.”

Is the new independent comedy-drama All the Light in the Sky about a Malibu-dwelling, 45-year-old actress called Marie and her dealings with the film industry? Or is it about why we need to accept, and engage with, change — be it personal or global? Actually, this latest film from prolific writer-director Joe Swanberg (Drinking Buddies) is technically both. However, star Jane Adams, who cowrote All the Light in the Sky with Swanberg, insists the movie is much more a philosophical rumination rather than a Tinseltown dissection.
“It’s got nothing to do with a Hollywood actress,” says Adams, whose credits include the Todd Solondz-directed Happiness,...

The term “mumblecore” is usually evoked as a derisive umbrella-term for the films of Joe Swanberg, the Duplass brothers, Andrew Bujalski, and several other twentysomething directors of the 2000s working with little to no budget and a lot of talking. Critics such as Vadim Rizov reject the labeling entirely, noting their disparate qualities, yet the term sticks to this day, even after the major directors of the so-called genre increased their production and vision, making films like Computer Chess, Drinking Buddies, and Jeff, Who Lives at Home. Given that these films often have amateurish qualities including bad lighting, questionable camera operations, and self-indulgent or cynical characters, most directors’ work are brushed off as being part of a movement only interested in showing off the worst qualities of Generation Y. While it is easy to be sympathetic toward many of these claims, a look at Swanberg’s oeuvre reveals a filmmaker...

Chicago – It takes a special sort of filmmaker to hit it big without compromising any artistic principles. This month marks a career high for Chicago’s own Diy trail-blazer, Joe Swanberg, whose microbudget gems have influenced everyone from Lynn Shelton (“Touchy Feely”) to Lena Dunham (“Girls”).
On Friday, August 23rd, two of Joe’s buzzed-about pictures will receive a limited theatrical release.
One is Ti West’s darkly satirical horror lark, “You’re Next,” which is currently being advertised at every creepy subway station in the Windy City (Swanberg plays an amusingly hatable character with a smug disregard for indie flicks). The other film is Swanberg’s 15th feature effort, “Drinking Buddies,” featuring an all-star cast, cinematography from a Cannes prize-winner (“Beasts of the Southern Wild” Dp Ben Richardson) and an actual budget. Yet Swanberg’s improvisational style and observant eye for naturalistic nuance remains entirely intact. Olivia Wilde is...

Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

Joe Swanberg is a polarizing figure in independent film. Since his first feature in 2005 (Kissing on the Mouth), he's proved quickly prolific, directing eighteen full-length features in just eight years. Let me say that again: eighteen films in eight years! Within that intense output are such critically praised pictures as Silver Bullets, Alexander The Last and Nights and Weekends. But to some critics, Swanberg's typical mumblecore approach is too rushed and slapdash or.in the opinion of outspoken critic Devin Faraci, who literally fought with Swanberg at last year's Fantastic Fest."the laziest form of filmmaking." But even Swanberg's harshest critics might be wooed by his latest Drinking Buddies, as its trailer suggests it may be his most commercially appealing effort yet. Written and directed by Swanberg, Drinking Buddies boasts a remarkable foursome as its leads: Anna Kendrick, Jake Johnson, Olivia Wilde, and Ron Livingston. We first got word of...

Buzzfeed's Jordan Zakarin broke the news, noting that her role on the show remains secret. The second 13-episode arc of the series, which comes out on DVD today and which kicked off Netflix's ongoing and influential rollout of original programming, is currently shooting in Maryland. The film was executive produced by Mike Witherill, Ashley Bernon, Jessica Klapman, David Kaplan, Anish Savjani, and Wilde. Magnolia Pictures is planning a theatrical release for later this year. Drinking Buddies follows the lives of Kate (Olivia Wilde) and Luke (Jake Johnson) who work together at a craft brewery. They have one of those friendships that feels like it could be something more. Drinking Buddies is the quintessential indie drama in the worst way. Meandering and largely unscripted (for that “organic” feel, don’t you know), it features scenes heavy with long looks and few words and the awkwardness that’s inherent in putting actors in a room and letting them “discover” what their characters will say.
Writer/director Joe Swanberg has somewhat of a reputation for his slow, moody indie dramas. And while Drinking Buddies wasn’t as meandering and introspective as Silver Bullets (a waste of a movie), it did feel like a premise that hadn’t been completely thought out or followed through.
The problem with letting actors largely create dialogue and shape scenes, is that your film usually feels like a voyeuristic journey into a stranger’s living room. The conversations are, for the most part, pedantic and circular. Or worse, just casual nothing. All of this translated into...

Chicago – There are a great many talented people involved in the over-hyped, underdeveloped horror anthology, “V/H/S.” It’s a sad sight to see so many gifted filmmakers assembled for a project so misguided. What could’ve been a launching pad for several exciting careers ends up being a mildly diverting curiosity well worth taping over.
Brad Miska’s concept of a “Creepshow”-style amalgam of found footage shorts is certainly promising in theory, but he falters in the execution. At an interminable running time of 116 minutes, the concept outstays its welcome several times over. Miska’s interview in the disc’s plentiful special features indicate that he wasn’t shrewd enough to cut the segments down to sharpen the pacing, while cutting others altogether.
Blu-ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
The wraparound vignette, “Tape 56,” was shot before any of the shorts had been planned, and its disjointed presence in the film is a conspicuous distraction.

Brad Miska, who runs bloody-disgusting.com, sees his fair share of horror successes and failures. It’s pretty safe to say that he knows what works and what doesn’t within the genre. So when he came up with the idea to combine the over-used but still viable found footage concept with an anthology film – which is enjoying a mini-renaissance of its own in horror, with films like The Theatre Bizarre and The ABCs of Death – and offer it up to a group of young, promising genre filmmakers that he’s been championing on his site, you can bet that people took notice of it. And when the resulting film, V/H/S, played at last year’s Sundance Festival, it floored everyone and was promptly acquired by Magnolia Pictures’ genre arm, Magnet Releasing, for a small theatrical run followed by a heavily-promoted VOD and home video release. The question that needs answering,...

Chicago – Some of the finest names in modern independent cinema may be garnering their largest audiences to date when the anthology horror film, “V/H/S,” is released on October 5th. It combines five horror shorts with a “wraparound” tale in which an assortment of troublemaking vandals (including “Open Five” director Kentucker Audley) search a spooky house for a priceless VHS tape.
This segment, “Tape 56,” was directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, two accomplished filmmakers in their own right, who have collaborated on horror films such as “A Horrible Way to Die” and “You’re Next.” Barrett also wrote and co-produced the “V/H/S” segment entitled “The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger,” which was directed by Chicago’s own Joe Swanberg (Wingard served as photographer and sound designer). Swanberg’s film stars Helen Rogers as Emily, a young woman who attempts to show her boyfriend,...

Simon Barrett offered V/H/S fans a glimpse at an alternate ending of the film recently in the form of a still, and we have it for you right here. Check it out along with an explanation of why it didn't fit and was cut. Dig it!
Barrett, who penned both the wrap, “Tape 56,” and Joe Swanberg’s “The Strange Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger,” shared this: “For your confusion/indifference, here is a still image from a deleted scene we shot for V/H/S. It will Not be on the DVD, etc. The photo looks cool, but the scene ultimately didn’t fit the film.”

What movie? The found-footage horror anthology V/H/S, which combines the efforts of some of the horror genre's finest new directors: Ti West (The Innkeepers, House of the Devil), David Bruckner (The Signal), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Adam Wingard (A Horrible Way to Die), and the directing quartet known as Radio Silence. V/H/S follows a group of criminals hired to break in an abandoned house and find a rare piece of video tape. As the group watches tape after tape to find the one they need, they are party to a series of increasingly disturbing videos.
Why we recommend it: With October right around the corner, the time seems right as ever to watch a horror movie, as, pretty soon, the neighborhoods will be dressed with fake spiderwebs and cardboard gravestones. There was a time when horror anthologies were hard to come by,...

In Sophia Takal’s Green, a couple of young, New York sophisticates travel upstate in order to research a book on sustainable farming, but when a working-class local woman becomes the object of their affection, jealousy and sexual gamesmanship threaten to ruin their relationship. Mining the insecurities that persist amongst young lovers is not necessarily new ground, but Takal, working with her fiance Lawrence Levine and roommate Kate Lyn Sheil, invests the storytelling with a moody disquiet, an emotional honesty and a jarring sense of foreboding that elevate the film above so many of its predecessors. Widely deploying the color of envy in its rustic milieu, its a marvelously cinematic enterprise for what is essentially a micro-budget chamber drama, eschewing many of the artless clichés that hamper so many productions of its kind.
The film, long a favorite on these pages, has cut a winding path through the international festival circuit,...

Chicago – In a mere four-year span, New York actress/filmmaker Sophia Takal has sported a remarkable versatility. Since 2009, she’s acted in ten feature films and is set to star in many more. Her first lead role was the titular heroine in Lawrence Michael Levine’s 2010 gem, “Gabi on the Roof in July.” Takal and Levine’s offscreen status as a couple enhanced the chemistry between their characters, siblings Gabi and Sam.
Takal later directed Levine and her close friend Kate Lyn Sheil in her directorial debut, “Green,” a hypnotic psychodrama that has garnered various accolades, including the Chicken & Egg Award at SXSW. The film centers on a young urban couple, Genevieve (Sheil) and Sebastian (Levine), who move to the country and befriend a genial local woman (Takal). As the friends’ laughter echoes through the dense, oddly foreboding forest, an underlying sense of unease threatens to dissolve their newfound bond.

V/H/S was released on VOD services last week and we’re continuing our exclusive series of interviews with the directors behind the found footage anthology film. Today, I have my interview with Joe Swanberg, who acted in Ti West’s segment and directed his own. Continue reading to learn why he enjoys acting and directing, the films that inspired his segment, and what horror films he’s appearing in next.
Ti West recently told me that he shot his segment before the other directors were on board. How did you get involved with Ti’s film?
Joe Swanberg: Ti and I met at SXSW in 2005. We both had our first films there, so we’ve been buddies for a long time. We’ve sort of collaborated on things in the past, but never in a really visible way. Ti acted for me in Silver Bullets and he cast me,...
