Released simultaneously with Vampire Savior 2: The Lord of Vampire (1997) in Japan. As such their opening sequences are similar though Vampire Hunter 2's opening is distinguished by having the opening animation showing Morrigan held at bay by the "monster hunter" Donovan Baine.
Prior to the release of Capcom Fighting Collection (2022), this game was not available outside of Japan. However gameplay elements were adapted to Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire (1997)'s PS1 port and Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower (2004). However, only the latter two games would use an official English translation, as the Capcom Fighting Collection is an emulation of the original arcade releases.
While most of the features from the arcade version of Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire (1997) is used in this game aside from omitting the four new characters originally introduced in the aforementioned game (Baby Bonnie Hood, Lilith Aensland, Q-Bee, and Jedah Doma), the music from that game was also removed and the character select screen and character theme music for each individual character from Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge (1995) was used instead.
Due to the absence of 4 characters (unlike Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire (1997) (arcade version only) and Vampire Savior 2: The Lord of Vampire (1997) which only omitted 3 characters each), the top part of the character select screen is purposely left blank.
