FrightFest, the number one horror and fantasy film festival in the UK, is back this year for its annual five-day extravaganza. Running from August 21 to August 25, 2025, FrightFest will showcase 69 features from across the world, including 19 world premieres from 14 countries and four short film showcase. This year, the festival returns to The Odeon Luxe Leicester Square and Odeon Luxe West End, taking over seven screens total for horror and genre filmmaking galore.

Festival co-director Alan Jones said, “FrightFest in its 26th year remains the UK’s Number One destination for genre fans. The 2025 event will be epic in every sense, celebrating the inventive, transgressive and diverse. So, join us for an event that has consistently remained in the Top Ten of The World’s Best Fantasy Festivals list”.

As the title suggests, it serves as the culmination of the narrative arcs from Seasons 1 to 4, taking place immediately after Season 4, Episode 12: “Demonic Pride”. As the Demon Lord’s castle rises and war erupts, heroes and villains alike converge in a desperate battle that will reshape the world.

In the Wasteland of Spirits, defenses are prepared and old alliances tested, while in the heart of the demon realm, Shang Bu Huan, Lin Xue Ya, and Lie Mo Xian risk everything to save their fallen comrade Lang Wu Yao, who has been sacrificed as fuel for a demonic fortress. Meanwhile, Zang Xin Jiao appears to have her own agenda, although she eventually aligns with the protagonists.

A day ahead of kicking off a headlining North American tour, Poppy showcased her single “The Cost of Giving Up” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night (March 10th).

For her performance on Kimmel, Poppy stood on a platform in a white dress and white boots surrounded by flowers, while her backing band donned all black.

Poppy started out with an ethereal vocal on the song, which initially has a pop feel despite some metal riffing. But then she let all hell break loose a couple minutes into the tune with a viciously screamed section that surely must have surprised many in the Kimmel audience.

Flying Lotus has directed the experimental comedy Kuso and the Ozzy’s Dungeon segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/99, and next up for the rapper and filmmaker (who is a.k.a. Steven Ellison) is the sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). When González and Paul were cast in the film, Flying Lotus released a statement saying, “We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames. They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. Neill Blomkamp hasn’t had a lot of luck with getting projects to the screen in the last decade. Plenty of ink has been spilled about his aborted take on Alien 5, but there’s also RoboCop Returns, the Halo film (although that project’s demise led directly to District 9) and, dare we say it, District 10.

The last project on that list may yet happen, some day. If you scratched your head at the idea of Neill Blomkamp directing what looked like a straight-up horror movie, you were not alone. As it turns out we had nothing to worry about because Blomkamp's next project is anything but typical.

Demonic stars Canadian actor Carly Pope as woman dealing with some difficulties with her mother and using what appears to be some sort of VR technology to overcome that rift except in doing so, the lines between the VR world and the real-world begin to blend together.

It’s been a somewhat tough decade for writer-director Neill Blomkamp. Since his box-office hit feature debut “District 9” garnered four Oscar nominations in 2009, the South African-Canadian sci-fi auteur has released two major films to diminishing critical and commercial returns: 2013’s “Elysium” (a mega-budgeted misfire by the director’s own admission) and 2015’s “Chappie” (which flopped despite a stellar cast and lighter tone). Perhaps even more significant are the films Blompkamp ended up not making: he’s been hired and fired from shelved sequels to both “Alien” and “RoboCop,” two of the most beloved franchises in modern movies. If either of those projects came together, his cultural footprint might more closely resemble a Ridley Scott or James Cameron. However, notwithstanding a devoted cult following, Blomkamp’s career hasn’t quite delivered on the promise of his early success.

The first images and some behind-the-scenes footage from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp's upcoming horror venture, Demonic, quickly go to show that the movie will certainly live up to that title. Written and directed by Blomkamp, the filmmaker crafted Demonic under the radar after production was forced to pause on the AGC-backed Taylor Kitsch action thriller The Inferno amid the ongoing global situation.

In Demonic, a young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades old rift between mother and daughter are revealed. The first image depicts a character looking very much the worse for wear and tied up in what can surely only be for nefarious purposes. The second image shows another character strapped into some sort of neural reader that will no doubt have ties to the horror elements at the center of Demonic.

What did you do during the pandemic? If you’re a filmmaker with horror tendencies, you made a lo-fi horror film, it seems. That’s what Ben Wheatley did with “In The Earth,” same with filmmaking duo Nick Simon and writer/actor Luke Baine (“The Girl in the Photographs“), and it’s also what “District 9” and “Chappie” director Neill Blomkamp did too with his “free time.” The result is “Demonic,” a horror-thriller about unleashing demons and supernatural forces between family members.

Mark Gill, CEO of Solstice Studios, said things are looking up and he’s hoping to stick to a September shooting date for Hypnotic, the Robert Rodriquez thriller with Ben Affleck. But right now, “You have trouble financing any size of movie except the small ones.”

“Mostly what we do is [in the range of] $40 million to $80 million that made it impossible for us to go into production. I had hoped it would ease up.”

After six years and several major near misses, including sequels to both Alien and RoboCop, director Neill Blomkamp is returning with Demonic, a supernatural thriller which IFC Midnight has now set for release on August 20. Demonic follows a young woman who unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades old rift between mother and daughter are ruthlessly revealed.

According to IFC Midnight's press release, Demonic stars "up-and-comers Carly Pope (Elysium), Chris William Martin, and Michael Rogers." The movie was shot in secret during lockdown.

"Neill Blomkamp exploded onto the filmmaking scene with District 9 and has made his mark by creating films that challenge and subvert the genre," IFC Films president Arianna Bocco said. "It's exciting to work together on this highly anticipated new vision, and be immersed in yet another world terrifyingly similar to our own."

Back in December we were all quite surprised to find out that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp secretly filmed a supernatural horror flick called Demonic during the Summer of 2020.    Today, IFC Midnight have announced that they have secured the U.S. rights for Demonic and are planning on releasing it on August 20th.   In Demonic, a young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades old rift between mother and daughter are ruthlessly revealed in this horror-thriller from director Neill Blomkamp.   Demonic went to EFM and sold like hotcakes. IFC Midnight said Wednesday that it is acquiring U.S. rights to Neill Blomkamp’s new film Demonic, a horror thriller starring Elysium‘s Carly Pope, Chris William Martin and Michael Rogers. The pic, co-produced and co-financed by AGC Studios and Stabiliti Studios and which was selling international rights during last month’s European Film Market, will now be released on August 20, 2021.

The backstory to the pic, written and directed by the District 9 and Elysium helmer in his first movie since 2015’s Chappie, is interesting: Deadline scooped a couple months ago that he shot it under the radar in British Columbia over the summer during the pandemic, after he had to pause on moving forward with the AGC-backed Taylor Kitsch action thriller The Inferno because of the Covid shutdown.

IFC Midnight has landed the U.S. rights to the supernatural horror movie “Demonic,” the next film from “District 9” director Neill Blomkamp.

“Demonic” is the fourth film from Blomkamp, who previously directed “Elysium” and the 2015 sci-fi “Chappie.” This latest film takes him into the horror realm and follows a young woman who unleashes terrifying demons and supernatural forces when a decades old rift between a mother and daughter is ruthlessly revealed.

Carly Pope, Chris William Martin and Michael Rogers stars in “Demonic.” Blomkamp wrote and directed the movie, and IFC Midnight will release it on August 20, 2021.

“Demonic” was co-financed and and co-produced by AGC Studios and STABILITi Studios last summer. Neill Blomkamp, Mike Blomkamp of STABILITi Studios, Stuart Ford and Linda McDonough of AGC Studios are on board as producers. The film’s executive producers are AGC’s Miguel Palos Jr., Alastair Burlingham, Charlie Dombek, Viktor Muller and Steven St. Arnaud.

Genre title was a hit among international buyers at virtual EFM.
