Leave it to a TV commercial to give DC fans the most comic-accurate version of Batman and his rogues gallery of all time. State Farm's "Batman vs. Bateman" spot saw Jason Bateman play a second-rate knock-off of The Dark Knight, while the real Batman patrolled Gotham City cleaning up after him. Sharing her work on the viral advertisement, Till confirmed that this version of Batman was played by Nicholas Hayner. Pouya Shahbazian, producer of the “Divergent” films and Andrea Arnold’s Cannes Jury Prize-winning “American Honey,” has launched the new AI production company Staircase Studio, which aims to produce 30 films over the next four years at budgets of $500,000 or less through the use of artificial intelligence software.

Huffington Post co-founder Kenneth Lerer is joining the studio as a partner with Lorenzo di Bonaventura signed on as an advisor. Staircase Studios plans to use scripts and performances from human writers and actors as the basis for its films, with the voices and expressions from performers forming the basis for the AI-generated footage.

In the wake of the Twilight series, Hollywood was high on teen fantasy (a genre that has now mostly been consigned to streaming), and this promised to be a doozy. It was based on a series of young adult fantasy novels called The Lorien Legacies, which were written by an author named Pittacus Lore, who, turned out to be a pseudonym for disgraced author James Frey (among others), whose career flamed out once it was revealed that his addiction memoir, A Million Little Pieces, was largely fabricated.

However, in this pre-cancellation era, Frey’s fall from grace was quickly forgiven by Hollywood, who sensed this could be the next huge franchise. A young actor named Alex Pettyfer, who Hollywood was hot on at the time,...

There are method actors, and then there’s Theo James, who apparently took things to a whole new level while filming The Monkey. You might know him as the brooding, tough-as-nails Four from Divergent or the slick, sharp-suited playboy in The White Lotus, but in his latest venture, James embraced the sheer chaos of horror like never before.

Directed by Osgood Perkins and based on Stephen King’s chilling short story, The Monkey follows two brothers who discover a sinister toy monkey that wreaks havoc on their lives. The film promises plenty of eerie moments, jumpscares, and a foreboding sense of dread.

But behind the scenes? It sounds like James was in a completely different horror movie, one where the real fear was what he’d do next in the name of acting. And yet, some of his wildest moments never even made it to the final cut.

Theo James had previously worked with Osgood Perkins on a horror series that didn’t achieve liftoff, but their collaboration ended up bearing fruit anyway in the form of The Monkey.

When Eleanor and her team locate the apartment where the gunman appears to be located, they find it empty — and the investigation begins in earnest. Teaming up with FBI Special Agent Geoffrey Lanmark (Ben Mendelsohn), Eleanor is on the case and tries to track down this mass shooter before...

Netflix is very quickly becoming the home of previous years’ box office disasters, and to prove a point, 2023’s crime thriller To Catch a Killer starring Shailene Woodley and Ben Mendelsohn is sitting at the top of the streamer’s movie chart. While the film is underrated by some, there is no way to deny that it was a complete flop at the box office, taking just $3.1 million at the box office on its initial release.

Damián Szifron directed and wrote the project, with Jonathan Wakeham also serving as a writer. Szifron and Woodley are also producers alongside Stuart Manashil (Watcher) and Aaron Ryder (Arrival). Writer-Director Neil Burger boasts quite a diverse catalog of films, ranging from sci-fi action flicks like Divergent and Limitless to the romantic mystery period film The Illusionist and the psychological crime thriller adaptation The Marsh King's Daughter. His latest, Inheritance, now takes him into the world of spy thrillers, following a woman who discovers her father's past in espionage, unknowingly thrusting her into the heart of an international conspiracy. There's no predicting what he has planned next given his range, but, fortunately, there's no need to do any guessing because he already has a few plans in motion. In an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub for Inheritance, he opened up about two ideas that are next on the docket, including a biopic that he was able to pull back the curtain on ever so slightly.

When reviewing a film, reading the director’s statement can feel an awful lot like checking their will. What an artist intended with the choices they left behind won’t always matter to the audience, but Neil Burger’s “Inheritance” is worth researching before you buy the ticket. Knowing how this strangely pedestrian thriller got produced not only makes it far more enjoyable to watch but highlights a new storytelling approach that might work better on the second try.

Captured on location in Egypt, India, South Korea, and New York City, IFC Films’ latest experiment in suspense — a father-daughter espionage adventure starring Phoebe Dynevor and Rhys Ifans — uses a naturalistic shooting style that spurred some great behind-the-scenes stories. Known for films like “Limitless” and “Divergent,” Burger aimed to make another slippery psychological drama with mainstream action appeal, but this time, he tried to give it some added oomph by boosting the authenticity.

Rhys Ifans is no stranger to colossal action, playing key (often villainous) characters in The Amazing Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Venom, and, of course, HBO’s House of the Dragon. Now, he leads the globetrotting spy-action feature Inheritance from director Neil Burger (Divergent).

A decade ago, Dylan O'Brien was a rising star in the entertainment industry. After success on a little-known MTV series, he was tapped to lead what should have been the next big franchise. The popularity of dystopian franchises such as The Hunger Games and Divergent made it apparent that there was a market for more content. O'Brien starred as Thomas in The Maze Runner, an adaptation of James Dashner's book of the same name about a group of boys who wake up in a terrifying maze with no memory of who they are.

While The Maze Runner was a commercial success, critics were less impressed, and the franchise lost steam during the third film, The Death Cure. O'Brien was injured during a stunt gone wrong when he was hit by a car. The actor has since gone on the record about how his safety concerns were disregarded, leading to a bad experience on set.

Shot guerilla-style in various urban locations with an iPhone and a small crew, Inheritance represents something of a return to director Neil Burger’s more experimental beginnings, particularly the faux-documentary approach of his feature debut Interview with the Assassin. Unfortunately, this would-be gritty espionage thriller has no more originality, depth, or thematic complexity than Burger’s biggest commercial success, the facile YA sci-fi adaptation Divergent, and it’s left oddly stranded between two opposing, mutually destructive sensibilities.

The film is centered on Maya (Phoebe Dynevor), a young woman whose sense of disaffection is partly mirrored by the vérité camera that tracks her impatiently throughout. After a brief opening sequence in which she engages in a number of “risky” activities—shoplifting a bottle of vodka, engaging in a dispassionate one-night stand, smoking a cig with her legs dangling out the window of her high-rise NYC apartment—Maya’s unconvincing emotional turmoil...

In description, “Inheritance” sounds like one of those movies that’s about the gimmickry of its own making: A spy thriller shot entirely on iPhone, with many scenes staged in public without permits for added urgency and spontaneity. The chances of a Divergent reboot are being addressed by original director Neil Burger, 10 years after the dystopian sci-fi franchise launched. An adaptation of the popular Veronica Roth novels, the film series explores a future Chicago where citizens are separated into factions, based on a primary virtue, and centers on Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley), a Divergent who uncovers alarming secrets about her society. Despite an underwhelming response from audiences, Divergent was a commercial success in 2014, and two sequels, directed by Robert Schwentke, were eventually released. However, plans to conclude the franchise beyond that were seemingly discarded.

Now, more than a decade after helming the first installment, Burger spoke with Screen Rant about whether Divergent can be rebooted.
