The new Batman State Farm commercial really caught people off guard. The ad, titled “Batman vs. Bateman,” featured Jason Bateman as a second-rate vigilante named Bateman, while the real Batman operates in the background. It’s amazing how the commercial managed to deliver such comic-accurate versions of Batman and his rogues’ gallery, more than some actual movies have.

However, the highlight goes to the actor who played Batman, a stunt performer with experience in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans can not stop praising the comic-accurate portrayal of Gotham City’s most infamous character.

Leave it to a TV commercial to give DC fans the most comic-accurate version of Batman and his rogues gallery of all time. State Farm's "Batman vs. Bateman" spot saw Jason Bateman play a second-rate knock-off of The Dark Knight, while the real Batman patrolled Gotham City cleaning up after him. The ad also included The Joker, The Riddler, Catwoman, and Two-Face, among many others, giving them more comic-accurate designs than most past DC movies. While Bateman didn't hide behind the cowl when "fighting" crime in Gotham, the real Batman remained a mystery... until now.
State Farm's Batman actor was revealed by makeup artist, Eliza Mollie Till, who shared some behind-the-scenes shots on Instagram. Sharing her work on the viral advertisement, Till confirmed that this version of Batman was played by Nicholas Hayner. While you might not recognize his name, you've definitely seen Hayner's work on the big screen.

The best teen movies highlight the experiences of young adults through timeless coming-of-age storylines. Some icons within the teen genre, such as Mean Girls and The Breakfast Club, are known for perfecting these tropes. Hollywood is a marketing game, which means that public images of actors and other creatives are paramount. Morality clauses are an integral part of any contract that is signed between production companies and actors, giving the company (and the industry) the right to remove the actor and disengage with them.

A lot of times, this is leveled at A-list actors, whose fall from grace is quick and decisive, but more often than not, it also plagues actors who are on the path to becoming big names in Hollywood. When they do get canceled, they are all over the news for a few short months and then disappear off of the face of the earth. These four actors faced something similar, being on the rise in the industry with some pretty great films. However, their path to A-list stardom was stalled...

After first making a name for himself in Hollywood with roles in films like The Spectacular Now, the Divergent trilogy, That Awkward Moment, and Fantastic Four, Miles Teller experienced a resurgence in popularity following his scene-stealing performance in the 2022 blockbuster hit Top Gun: Maverick. The highly-buzzed-about sequel to the celebrated '80s classic featured Teller teaming up with silver screen staple Tom Cruise's test pilot and flight instructor Pete "Maverick" Mitchell as he teaches a new group of ambitious Top Gun graduates.
Prior to Maverick, Teller famously appeared in two well-received but financially underwhelming films: Todd Phillips' black crime comedy War Dogs and the war drama Thank You for Your Service. Let's take a closer look at the war movies and how he finally landed a slam dunk at the box office by starring in Top Gun: Maverick.

One of the most forgettable teen fantasy movies of the 2010s had to have been D.J. Caruso’s would-be franchise starter, I Am Number Four. In the wake of the Twilight series, Hollywood was high on teen fantasy (a genre that has now mostly been consigned to streaming), and this promised to be a doozy. It was based on a series of young adult fantasy novels called The Lorien Legacies, which were written by an author named Pittacus Lore, who, turned out to be a pseudonym for disgraced author James Frey (among others), whose career flamed out once it was revealed that his addiction memoir, A Million Little Pieces, was largely fabricated.
However, in this pre-cancellation era, Frey’s fall from grace was quickly forgiven by Hollywood, who sensed this could be the next huge franchise. A young actor named Alex Pettyfer, who Hollywood was hot on at the time,...

There are method actors, and then there’s Theo James, who apparently took things to a whole new level while filming The Monkey. You might know him as the brooding, tough-as-nails Four from Divergent or the slick, sharp-suited playboy in The White Lotus, but in his latest venture, James embraced the sheer chaos of horror like never before.
Directed by Osgood Perkins and based on Stephen King’s chilling short story, The Monkey follows two brothers who discover a sinister toy monkey that wreaks havoc on their lives. The film promises plenty of eerie moments, jumpscares, and a foreboding sense of dread.

But behind the scenes? It sounds like James was in a completely different horror movie, one where the real fear was what he’d do next in the name of acting. And yet, some of his wildest moments never even made it to the final cut.

Theo James had previously worked with Osgood Perkins on a horror series that didn’t achieve liftoff, but their collaboration ended up bearing fruit anyway in the form of The Monkey.
James plays the dual twin role of Hal and Bill Shelburn in Perkins’ follow-up to Longlegs, and when he first received the writer-director’s adaptation of Stephen King’s homonymous short story, he found himself laughing to a point where he was unsure if The Monkey’s tone was intentional or not. After all, he knew Perkins’ body of work from their previous go-round together, and comedy wasn’t at the forefront of his films despite a well regarded sense of humor in real life.
“I got sent the script, and I loved it. But it was really funny, and I was slightly confused. I wasn’t ready for that because the bank of [Perkins’] work hadn’t been as such,...

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival turned out to be a low-key affair, but it got off to a rousing start with a $15 million world rights sale of Together, the body horror film acquired by Neon. Starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, it gives Neon a chance to follow up the rousing genre success of Longlegs last year.
Together, which also has landed a berth at SXSW, is written/directed by Michael Shanks. Franco and Brie are a couple that moves to the countryside and a supernatural encounter begins an extreme transformation of their love, their lives, and their flesh. It was a real crowd pleaser to the Midnight Madness audience.

This post contains discussion of mass violence and mental health.
At this point in time, it sort of seems like serial killer thrillers are a dime a dozen — but despite that, one starring Shailene Woodley just got added to Netflix and quickly became one of the most-streamed projects on the platform (according to FlixPatrol).
"To Catch a Killer," a crime flick directed by Damián Szifron (who co-wrote the movie alongside Jonathan Wakeham), stars Woodley as Eleanor Falco, a beat cop who's stuck working the New Year's Eve shift in Baltimore when a gunman starts killing partygoers indiscriminately with a sniper rifle. When Eleanor and her team locate the apartment where the gunman appears to be located, they find it empty — and the investigation begins in earnest. Netflix is very quickly becoming the home of previous years’ box office disasters, and to prove a point, 2023’s crime thriller To Catch a Killer starring Shailene Woodley and Ben Mendelsohn is sitting at the top of the streamer’s movie chart. While the film is underrated by some, there is no way to deny that it was a complete flop at the box office, taking just $3.1 million at the box office on its initial release.
Damián Szifron directed and wrote the project, with Jonathan Wakeham also serving as a writer. Szifron and Woodley are also producers alongside Stuart Manashil (Watcher) and Aaron Ryder (Arrival). The movie plays out with very similar traits to The Silence of the Lambs, with a young agent being recruited by the FBI to track down a serial killer with her unique, disturbed view of the world. The O.C.was a beloved TV series of the teen drama genre that ran from 2003 to 2007. The series follows a group of teenagers living in Newport Beach, Orange County, with Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) being taken in by the wealthy Cohen family. The four-season series followed Ryan as the fish-out-of-water, along with his best friend, Seth Cohen (Adam Brody), girl-next-door Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton), and her best friend, Summer Roberts. The success of the series launched its main cast into stardom, with Ben McKenzie going on to star in Gotham, Rachel Bilson in Hart of Dixie and Jumper, and Adam Brody in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, as well as Netflix’s Nobody, Wants This, which won him a Critics' Choice Award. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James are joining forces for a new thriller... but no, it's not for the next James Bond film. After finishing up production last year, the unlikely duo will be starring in Fuze, which also boasts a stacked supporting cast. Now in post-production, the buzzy thriller is finally gaining some momentum as it has sold to numerous international distributors across the globe. It may not be the thriller fans of the actors have envisioned them in, but the creative forces behind Fuze should be plenty to justify a viewing.

Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet has added extra weight to his case for Best Actor, revealing that he gained 20 pounds to play Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
“I’ve turned over every stone. I did all the work, like you just described, physicality, behavior-wise,” Chalamet said in a recent interview with NPR. “But something we haven’t really talked about, I also put on 20 pounds because, believe it or not, I was thinner than the guy.”

As Variety points out, Chalamet has previously spoken about receiving feedback for his smaller physique while auditioning for action roles. “If I auditioned for The Maze Runner or Divergent, things of that variety that were popping when I was coming up, the feedback was always, ‘Oh, you don’t have the right body,'” he told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe late last year.

Timothée Chalamet learned to play guitar and sing like Bob Dylan for “A Complete Unknown.” He also gained 20 pounds to look more like the folk music legend, he revealed an interview with NPR.
“I’ve turned over every stone. I did all the work, like you just described, physicality, behavior-wise,” Chalamet told “All Things Considered” host Ailsa Chang. “But something we haven’t really talked about, I also put on 20 pounds because, believe it or not, I was thinner than the guy.”
Chalamet is nominated for best actor for his performance in the James Mangold film, which chronicles Dylan’s arrival in New York City at age 19 in 1961 to his transformative “going electric” moment at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
The 29-year-old actor previously spoke about his body type in a November interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.

Writer-Director Neil Burger boasts quite a diverse catalog of films, ranging from sci-fi action flicks like Divergent and Limitless to the romantic mystery period film The Illusionist and the psychological crime thriller adaptation The Marsh King's Daughter. His latest, Inheritance, now takes him into the world of spy thrillers, following a woman who discovers her father's past in espionage, unknowingly thrusting her into the heart of an international conspiracy. There's no predicting what he has planned next given his range, but, fortunately, there's no need to do any guessing because he already has a few plans in motion. In an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub for Inheritance, he opened up about two ideas that are next on the docket, including a biopic that he was able to pull back the curtain on ever so slightly.

When reviewing a film, reading the director’s statement can feel an awful lot like checking their will. What an artist intended with the choices they left behind won’t always matter to the audience, but Neil Burger’s “Inheritance” is worth researching before you buy the ticket. Knowing how this strangely pedestrian thriller got produced not only makes it far more enjoyable to watch but highlights a new storytelling approach that might work better on the second try.
Captured on location in Egypt, India, South Korea, and New York City, IFC Films’ latest experiment in suspense — a father-daughter espionage adventure starring Phoebe Dynevor and Rhys Ifans — uses a naturalistic shooting style that spurred some great behind-the-scenes stories. Known for films like “Limitless” and “Divergent,” Burger aimed to make another slippery psychological drama with mainstream action appeal, but this time, he tried to give it some added oomph by boosting the authenticity.

Rhys Ifans is no stranger to colossal action, playing key (often villainous) characters in The Amazing Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Venom, and, of course, HBO’s House of the Dragon. Rhys Ifans is also no stranger to intrigue, starring in Netflix’s Berlin Station and playing Mycroft Holmes on Elementary. Now, he leads the globetrotting spy-action feature Inheritance from director Neil Burger (Divergent).

A decade ago, Dylan O'Brien was a rising star in the entertainment industry. After success on a little-known MTV series, he was tapped to lead what should have been the next big franchise. The popularity of dystopian franchises such as The Hunger Games and Divergent made it apparent that there was a market for more content. O'Brien starred as Thomas in The Maze Runner, an adaptation of James Dashner's book of the same name about a group of boys who wake up in a terrifying maze with no memory of who they are.
While The Maze Runner was a commercial success, critics were less impressed, and the franchise lost steam during the third film, The Death Cure. O'Brien was injured during a stunt gone wrong when he was hit by a car. The actor has since gone on the record about how his safety concerns were disregarded, leading to a bad experience on set.

Shot guerilla-style in various urban locations with an iPhone and a small crew, Inheritance represents something of a return to director Neil Burger’s more experimental beginnings, particularly the faux-documentary approach of his feature debut Interview with the Assassin. Unfortunately, this would-be gritty espionage thriller has no more originality, depth, or thematic complexity than Burger’s biggest commercial success, the facile YA sci-fi adaptation Divergent, and it’s left oddly stranded between two opposing, mutually destructive sensibilities.
The film is centered on Maya (Phoebe Dynevor), a young woman whose sense of disaffection is partly mirrored by the vérité camera that tracks her impatiently throughout. After a brief opening sequence in which she engages in a number of “risky” activities—shoplifting a bottle of vodka, engaging in a dispassionate one-night stand, smoking a cig with her legs dangling out the window of her high-rise NYC apartment—Maya’s unconvincing emotional turmoil...

In description, “Inheritance” sounds like one of those movies that’s about the gimmickry of its own making: A spy thriller shot entirely on iPhone, with many scenes staged in public without permits for added urgency and spontaneity. But this latest feature from Neil Burger, who co-wrote the script with spy novelist Olen Steinhauer, ultimately transcends mere novelty by having an even smaller-scale gist than you’d expect. For all its multinational sprawl and intimations of high peril, the film is ultimately a two-person drama about a daughter (Phoebe Dynevor) finding out who her long-absent father (Rhys Ifans) really is. What she learns is bitter, but also dramatically satisfying enough to make this release, hitting theaters from IFC Films on Friday, feel like something more than just one more low-budget action movie with familiar faces.

The chances of a Divergent reboot are being addressed by original director Neil Burger, 10 years after the dystopian sci-fi franchise launched. An adaptation of the popular Veronica Roth novels, the film series explores a future Chicago where citizens are separated into factions, based on a primary virtue, and centers on Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley), a Divergent who uncovers alarming secrets about her society. Despite an underwhelming response from audiences, Divergent was a commercial success in 2014, and two sequels, directed by Robert Schwentke, were eventually released. However, plans to conclude the franchise beyond that were seemingly discarded.
Now, more than a decade after helming the first installment, Burger spoke with Screen Rant about whether Divergent can be rebooted. Although he had not considered it, the director explained that Lionsgate may look to remake the series at some point. Burger then expressed his appreciation for the movie and getting to work with...

The Hunger Games' two-part finale proved a divisive decision, and it should have warned another popular young adult franchise that splitting its final movie was a bad idea. The Hunger Games movies are overwhelmingly considered successful, and both Mockingjay installments made hundreds of millions at the box office. Even so, the choice to split the adaptation of Mockingjay into two parts was one that was met with criticism, and Mockingjay - Part 1 suffered as a result.
Unfortunately, The Hunger Games is far from the only franchise to divide its final movie into two — and some aren't even waiting until the last installment to try this approach. Given the complaints about Mockingjay, one would think other YA dystopian series of the 2010s would have proceeded with caution. However, the Divergent series attempted the same strategy when adapting Allegiant. It didn't work in the final movie's favor, suggesting the franchise should have...

Hugh Dancy has been working as a screen actor for over 20 years, and ranking his movies from worst to best, including his turn in Downton Abbey, reveals a filmography varied in genres and styles. Since his breakout role in the 2000 TV movie David Copperfield, Dancy has amassed significant fame for such roles as Will Graham in the NBC television series Hannibal and Prince Charmont in the feature film Ella Enchanted. Beyond these headliners, however, Dancy has accrued dozens of other successful roles.

Fans already know to expect changes to be made when adapting a book to the big screen, particularly with a trilogy such as The Hunger Games. This is the case in most book-to-movie adaptations, like the film adaptations of book series like Harry Potter, Twilight, and Divergent. It could be for simple reasons such as time constraints or a limited budget or technology. It could also be for the sake of visual and narrative cohesion. For these reasons, it was no surprise that changes were made to the story of The Hunger Games when the novels were made into movies.
The Hunger Games has a first-person present-tense narration as well, which means readers only know what Katniss knew herself and what happened to her at each moment. The movies chose to expand on the stories, adding subplots and more detail to things happening outside of Katniss and her journey. Some of the changes were minor,...

Sometimes, a movie just doesn't get the fair shake that it deserves, even if all of the right pieces seem to be in place. Such was the case with "The Bronze." A comedy released by Sony Pictures Classics in 2016, the film was pretty much dead on arrival and hardly registered at all with moviegoers at the time despite being written by and starring Melissa Rauch of "The Big Bang Theory" fame. Mind you, this was when the CBS sitcom was still thriving on the air. So, what went wrong?

The best Theo James movies and TV shows feature a mix of everything from coming-of-age dramas to sci-fi dystopian thrillers. While he turned 40 in 2024, Theo James is still looked at as a Hollywood newcomer. That is likely because he didn’t earn his first major mainstream acceptance until he starred in The Divergent Series around his 30th birthday. Those movies made him a star, and he has since begun developing a strong mix of roles.
The Divergent Series wasn’t Theo James’ first main Hollywood part though, as he also took on the major supporting role of David in Underworld: Awakening and even followed that up with the next movie in the series four years later. However, since Divergent, he has found his place as both a voice actor in shows like Castlevania and X-Men ’97 and more dramatic live-action roles in The Gentlemen and The White Lotus.

Jacob Lofland is ready to reflect on his time with the Maze Runner movies. Inspired by James Dashner's book, the movie came on the heels of other major Young Adult hits, including The Hunger Games (2012). Maze Runner's expansive cast included Dylan O'Brien (Teen Wolf), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Game of Thrones), and more. The movie easily succeeded in theaters, earning nearly $350 million on a $30 million budget. Both follow-ups also received box office success, even if none were ever dominant.
With word of a franchise reboot in development, the future of the franchise seems as bright as ever. Speaking with Screen Rant's Grant Hermanns about Landman, Lofland addressed the coming reboot. He had not heard about the reboot's development before the interview, but he did reflect positively on his time with the cast. Check out his quote below:
I haven't heard that. Back in the day, there was talk about it,...

Shailene Woodley began her career as a child artist in the 1999 TV film Replacing Dad. She played a child actor for a long time on television before landing the lead role in five seasons of the teen drama, The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She starred as George Clooney’s daughter in The Descendants and did some indie films before landing her franchise role in the Divergent trilogy.

Divergent was a star-studded affair with many young stars and a few veteran stars in the mix. Lionsgate took up the project after their success with Jennifer Lawrence’s The Hunger Games, another book-to-film adaptation. Interestingly, her big franchise film did not turn out to be the high-paying gig that Shailene Woodley expected.

If “Wicked” had been one movie as originally planned, the subplot involving all the animals of Oz and the backstory on the magical book the Grimmerie were due to be left on the cutting room floor. Instead, Winnie Holzman — who wrote the book for the stage musical and co-wrote the screenplay for the smash-hit “Wicked” film — said that by expanding the adaptation into two parts, they now “have room for everything.”
Holzman pulled back the curtain on the long process of turning “Wicked” into a movie during TheWrap’s “Art of Adaptation” panel at Power Women Summit on Tuesday in Los Angeles alongside producer Lucy Fisher (whose “Gladiator II” is currently in theaters), producer Nina Jacobson (the “Hunger Games” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” franchises) and actress Ariana Madix (a recent revival of “Chicago”) for one powerhouse conversation.

Netflix is shelling out big bucks for the rights to a book series that went viral on TikTok earlier this year. If one is familiar with BookTok, one might have heard of the fantasy book "Quicksilver," released on June 3, 2024. Written by "Blood & Roses" and "Dirty Nasty Freaks" author Callie Hart, Quicksilver exploded in popularity, quickly became a bestseller and, within its first two months of release, garnered 3 million mentions on TikTok. The story of 24-year-old human rebel Saeris Fane inadvertently reopening a gateway between two realms and accidentally binding herself to a handsome but mysterious Fae warrior named Kingfisher was prime material for an adaptation, and Netflix has now set its sights on the property.
Deadline reports that Netflix secured the rights to "Quicksilver" and its two planned sequel books, with the streamer paying seven figures for the rights. The series author, Callie Hart, will be the executive producer,...
