When “War Pony” debuts in Cannes on May 21, it will represent the culmination of a project almost a decade in the making. Directed by Riley Keough and Gina Gammell, and written by Keough, Gammell, Bill Reddy and Franklin Sioux Bob, the film about two boys growing up on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota took seven years from conception to post-production.
Protagonist Picture is handling international sales on the project while CAA Media Finance is repping North America.
“It was a very slow burn,” Keough says of the film. “Because we didn’t really have a clear intention for many years.”
Keough met Reddy and Sioux Bob, who both grew up on the Pine Ridge Reservation, when they were extras on Andrea Arnold’s 2016 feature “American Honey,” in which Keough starred. When a scene featuring the trio got delayed by six hours, they had nothing else to do but hang out,...

Reservation Dogs has been crushing it with their celebrity cameos. In this week's episode, we were treated to appearances by Kaniehtiio Horn, Kiowa Gordon, and Wes Studi. Horn played the role of the mythical Deer Woman, Gordon appeared as one of her victims, and Studi took on the role of a harmless townie named Bucky. While Studi's performance certainly made us laugh, it was Horn's portrayal of Deer Woman that truly stole the show.
Similar to the blurry owl scene in episode three, the Deer Woman is another nod to Indigenous culture as she appears in several stories told by different tribal nations. In some stories, Deer Woman is connected with fertility and love, but in others, she's known as a dangerous being who seduces men, typically adulterous or promiscuous men, and leads them to heartbreak or death.
In the case of Horn's Deer Woman, she falls more in line with the latter.

“Reservation Dogs,” FX’s new comedy about Indigenous teens in rural Oklahoma co-created by Taika Waititi and Sterlin Harjo, is breaking ground for Native American representation in Hollywood.
With a team almost entirely made up of Native creatives, what’s the show’s most innovative storytelling element? According to them, it’s the simple fact that “Reservation Dogs” has a sense of humor.
“TV and streaming is not as afraid as feature films have been to let us tell stories with Native lead actors,” Harjo told Variety at the “Reservation Dogs” premiere at NeueHouse Hollywood. “I think it’s perfect for the show that we’re doing. To let this story unfold in a way that helps us break out of the old molds of what a Native story is. It really lets us shake the frost off and take it to new places.”

For Reservation Dogs co-creators Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, comedy is all part of putting a new, refreshing spin on media portrayals of Indigenous communities.
“I think our Indigenous communities – how we’ve survived is through laughter. There’s a lot of bad shit that happened to us at the hands of the U.S. Government and other governments but we survived partially because of our humor,” Harjo said during a TCA panel on Wednesday.
Harjo and Waititi joined the stars of the upcoming FX comedy – D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai, Paulina Alexis, Devery Jacbos and Lane Factor – to reflect on authentic storytelling, casting and more. Set to debut August 9, Reservation Dogs follows the exploits of four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma who steal, rob and save in order to get to the exotic, mysterious and faraway land of California.

From Dubai to Mumbai, it has been quite some journey for young Japinder Kaur who is making her foray into the world of Bollywood. An erstwhile assistant to Prakash Jha (with whom she worked on Aarakshan) and boasting of a blooming post production studio in Dubai (which she runs with her brother Tarnpreet Singh – who is also the producer of her debut feature film), Japinder is stepping into Bollywood with Dilliwaalli Zaalim Girlfriend. We get into a quick conversation with her.
A love story with a thrill element to it – Guess Dilliwaalli Zaalim Girlfriend is one cocktail of a film?
While it is my first film, I pretty much feel that I am an audience first. I don’t have any checklist or criteria that I am following at all. As an audience when I watch a film, I enjoy a cocktail. Same is the case with my friends and family.

Satyagraha opened on expected lines and with the kind of massive release that it got for itself, even an opening that hovered around the 50%-60% mark was good enough to make it go past the 10 crore mark on Friday. Collections continued to be stable over the rest of the weekend, hence resulting in around 38 crore* coming in. In the process, it has also left behind the 30 crore opening weekend of Raajneeti.
Now it has to be seen if the Prakash Jha directed affair brings on consistent collections during the weekdays as well and leaves behind the 54 crore first week that Raajneeti had enjoyed. Considering the fact that it belongs to the socio-political genre that has seldom brought in moolah, this would be fantastic. The film is mounted on a huge scale though with a massive star cast to boast of which means it needs to have a good run for many more days to follow.

Manoj Bajpai is known for his strong characters portrayed on-screen. The actor who has won many accolades for his roles in movies like Shool, Satya, Zubeidaa and Raajneeti amongst many others has been paired yet again opposite Big B in a negative role for his upcoming movie Satyagraha.
The National Film Award Winning actor prefers to do a villainous role while sharing the screen space with the mega star. He feels that no other character stands strong enough opposite Amitabh Bachchan and thus it is better to do a negative role.
“In an Amitabh Bachchan film, there’s no other role which is better than his. In such a situation it’s only the negative role which is as good as his, so it’s best to go for the negative. I must say in films like Aks, Aarakshan or even Satyagraha now, the roles were written very carefully,” said Bajpai.

With the highly-acclaimed Madras Cafe opening to very encouraging responses, the scenario is perfect for another political thriller coming Friday.
And no, Satyagraha is not a sequel to Prakash Jha's Raajneeti. "I was only trying to say that the politics of the two films has a kind of continuity. Where the politics of Raajneeti ends the politics of Satyagraha takes over. Otherwise there is no similarity between the two films. The characters are very different from one another," says Prakash Jha.
While Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpayee and Arjun Rampal have worked in a number of films with Prakash, and the Big B has done the anti-reservation film Aarakshan before, it is a first for Prakash with Kareena Kapoor.

Prakash Jha has denied that his upcoming film Satyagraha is based on social activist Anna Hazare. Following the release of the film’s trailer, many presumed that Amitabh Bachchan’s character is based on the popular anti-corruption campaigner. “I have not commented on this before. The film is not based on Anna Hazare and has nothing to do with the movement, said Prakash to the media. The entire process of satyagraha comes from Gandhiji. Mr Bachchan plays the role of a satyagrahi who believes in truth.”
Prakash also spoke of how fortunate he is to have been able to work again with Amitabh Bachchan, with whom he worked with in his last film Aarakshan (2011). “It is very fortunate for us that someone from our generation gets to work with Mr Bachchan.”
Given that Prakash Jha’s films revolve around controversial subjects, this has led to a number of protests in India.

Mumbai, Jan 30: Actors, movie makers and other members of the film fraternity Wednesday reacted strongly to the ban imposed by the Tamil Nadu government on Kamal Hassan's controversial film "Vishwaroopam". This is what they had to say:
Shabana Azmi: The Supreme Court ruled in the case of Prakash Jha's film "Aarakshan" that once a movie was cleared by the Censor Board Of Film Certification no state can impose a ban on a film. It is the government's business to give value to its own certification and ensure the film is shown. Those who protest have the right to do so. But if they do so violently then the law of the land must apply to.

Becket beckons Bollywood once again. The immortal French play by Jean Anouilh was furnished a sensitive renewability by Hrishikesh Mukherjee in Namak Haraam 38 years ago and then again much later by Govind Nihalani in Dev.
Now the stories of two friends separated by caste creed and ideology who are torn apart by their irreconcilable socio-political differences, is given a seriously spunky spin by Prakash Jha.
Staightaway, let’s get to the point(much in the same vein that the film does). This is Prakash Jha’s most resolutely etched and firmly grounded drama since Mrityudand, and a work way superior to his last two film Raajneeti and Aarakshan both of which suffered to some extent by being scattered in intent and pulled in too many directions.

When you watch a Prakash Jha film, you always leave the theater educated about the issues he turns his camera on. With Chakravyuh, Mr. Jha tells the story of a war in India that many do not even know about. The official synopsis gives us a glimpse of what we will learn when we see the film: There is a war raging in India. A war whose end can’t be seen. A war that is not being waged by outsiders. The enemy is our own! The youth of the country are rebelling… Against injustice, against tyranny, against exploitation. Inequality will not be tolerated forever. There is anger, and there is deep social unrest. Our own countrymen are locked in the bloodiest armed mutiny this country has ever seen. Prakash Jha's film Aarakshan created quite a furor when it released last year. However, the film was banned in various states including Punjab; post which, Jha had approached the Supreme Court claiming damages due to the banning and non-release of the film. Earlier today, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Punjab government on Jha's plea seeking symbolic damages from the state government for causing loss to him by banning his film Aarakshan. Though Jha did not quantify the damages, he stated that more than the remuneration, it was a matter of principle and that the case was filed as a protest to the state government's decision to ban the film. The political thriller which starred Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Manoj Bajpayee, Prateik and Deepika Padukone released on August 12, 2011.
