Right, well I didn't know about this 2022 Mongolian thriller titled "Aberrance" prior to sitting down here in 2024 to watch it. SO I didn't know what I was in for.
And I have to say that the movie is a slow paced movie which left me wondering whether there actually was a point to the storyline. You have to sit through 75 minutes of nothing, should you opt to sit down and watch director Baatar Batsukh's movie. I can't claim that I was entertained by the movie, and I actually drifted off twice during that time. So yeah, this movie was a swing and a miss.
I am amazed that Baatar Batsukh, Byambasuren Ganbat and Erdene Orosoo collectively could manage to deliver a movie that swung and missed as badly as it did.
With "Aberrance" being my first ever Mongolian movie, needless to say that I wasn't familiar with the actors and actresses on the cast list. But even with a lousy script such as "Aberrance" turned out to be, then the acting performances were actually fair. The character gallery in the movie is weak, because there is no backstory, no motive, no explanations or anything given for the characters and their actions. And that just makes you have no invested interest in the characters that milled aimlessly about on the screen.
Visually then there was nothing to write home about here, as the movie doesn't really use special effects to tell its story, or rather lack thereof.
If you enjoy thrillers and horror movies, don't waste your time, money or effort on this one. There just simply isn't anything worthwhile taking place throughout the dull narrative. Yet, I managed to endure the movie to the bitter end, so some of us suffered through this ordeal so you don't have to; you're very welcome.
In fact, the movie's cover was the best part about the ordeal.
My rating of "Aberrance" lands on a two out of ten stars.

Do you remember that famous Guinea Pig movie what Charlie Sheen once saw and though it was real? That it was just a man disguised as a samurai cutting off a woman limb by limb?
Well, that movie had a better plot and a more interesting storytelling. Besides, practical effects that were used were so good that every chop looked real.
This movie is bad. There's no explanation to anything. None of the characters have a real motivation, nothing happened for a reason.
Yesterday I watched A Song from the Dark, a Nigerian movie that also wasn't good, and I thought that it was going to be the worst movie I've seen this week, but, Aberrance proved me wrong.

No pun intended - and maybe not entirely true. But what really is true? The movie does try to keep the viewer guessing. And by trying to be many things at once ... well it may not be as good as it could have been if it concentrated on one thing and went for it entirely. On the other hand .. it may have become boring if it did that ... and boring this is not - well unless you are not able to suspend your disbelief of course.
I think the acting is decent enough - but there are situations where you as viewer ... well you may feel cheated or at least question the motives of the people involved ... everything is working towards a twist (or is twists?) ... is it worth it? Probably not - but if you like thrillers with a touch of horror ... well you could do worse (in my humble opinion)
