‘Emily in Paris’ Casting Director Juliette Ménager on Becoming the Show’s Secret Weapon, Finding the Perfect Sylvie Grateau and Why Camille Razat ‘Could Maybe Come Back’
Image
“We’ve created a monster!” quips casting director Juliette Ménager about the “Emily in Paris” frenzy. Ménager, who describes herself as a gourmet French chef known for mastering the secret sauce that American showrunners are lining up for, has been part of Darren Star’s romantic comedy series from the beginning.

She’s contributed significantly to its success with her clever casting hunches, such as Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, who plays chic and fierce boss Sylvie Grateau. The 62-year-old Leroy-Beaulieu, a fan favorite with over four decades of credits, filled a role initially written for a 35 to 40-year-old actress. Or Marcello, Emily’s Italian beau, who needed a different look than the typical Italian hunk. But the Netflix show, the fifth season of which is currently filming, is only one of many hits on her long resumé.

Over her 30-plus year career, she’s worked on music videos by Daft Punk and Mylene Farmer,...

Marvel’s ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Still Doesn’t Beat $758 Million Epic Film Despite Giving One of MCU’s Most Spine-Chilling Scenes
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers about ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’

The black hole sequence in The Fantastic Four: First Steps is pure Interstellar energy; haunting, beautiful, and completely unexpected from a Marvel film. As Marvel’s First Family makes their big-screen MCU debut, it’s this eerie cosmic moment that steals the spotlight.

As director Matt Shakman admitted: (via The Hollywood Reporter)

T.S. Eliot said, ‘Good artists borrow, great artists steal,’ and I definitely am not ashamed of stealing from some of the folks that I love so much. So Interstellar was a huge reference…

Though the homage is clear, even with all the cosmic flair, The Fantastic Four: First Steps still falls just short of Christopher Nolan-level chills in the $758 million sci-fi epic.

How The Fantastic Four: First Steps Sets Up Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday
Image
Major spoilers for "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" follow.

"The Fantastic Four: First Steps" is set in a world separate from most other Marvel Studios' movies. Earth-828, specifically, which resembles a futuristic version of the 1960s where all the decade's pulp sci-fi came true. "First Steps" benefits from this isolation; it's one of the most complete-feeling Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in a long time. It begins, proceeds, and ends on its own terms.

But we knew the Fantastic Four are on the cast list for next year's "Avengers: Doomsday" — Doctor Doom is the Four's nemesis. Besides introducing the Four and their newest member, Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) and Sue Storm's (Vanessa Kirby) baby Franklin Richards, the movie is light on any "Doomsday" set-up. Until the post-credits scene, anyway.

The movie jumps ahead four years, so Franklin is now a toddler. Sue is reading to him; when she steps...

Why Michael Douglas Retired From Acting
Image
Whether he's preening and seducing as Liberace in "Behind the Candelabra" or running amok while rocking a flattop haircut in "Falling Down," Michael Douglas has long established himself as one of those actors who will bring his A-game to the table every time. However, if movie buffs who like to keep up with acting legends have been wondering what Douglas has been up to recently, the answer is as simple as it is sad: Not a lot, at least when it comes to acting. Yes, projects like 2023's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" and the 2024 Apple TV+ miniseries "Franklin" have kept the actor on screens both big and small, but as Douglas himself recently stated during a press conference at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, he hasn't actually worked in a few years now:

"I've had a very busy career. Now, I have not worked since 2022, purposefully, because I realized I had to stop.

UTA Signs ‘Lurker’ Star Théodore Pellerin
Image
Exclusive: UTA has signed rising Canadian actor Théodore Pellerin for representation in all areas.

This August, Pellerin will be seen starring in Lurker, the critically acclaimed feature directorial debut of Alex Russell, which was snapped up by Mubi for U.S. distribution and Focus Features for international following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, where it broke out as one of this year’s buzziest titles.

In the psychological thriller set in Los Angeles, the actor plays Matthew, a young retail clerk who cunningly inserts himself into the inner circle of a pop star (Archie Madekwe) with whom he’s become infatuated.

Upcoming, Pellerin will also be seen starring in Pauline Loquès’ debut feature Nino, a Parisian drama that premiered in competition at Cannes Critics’ Week, where the actor was awarded the Rising Star Award.

Pellerin previously starred as the Marquis de Lafayette in Apple TV+’s Franklin,...

Michael Douglas Says He’s Done Acting: “I Had to Stop”
Image
He might have said “Greed is good” on screen once, but Michael Douglas is not feeling greedy about acting roles anymore. While presenting a new print of his Oscar-winning classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival on Saturday, July 5th, the esteemed actor and producer said that his absence from the screen in recent years has not been accidental: “I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop.”

As Variety reports, Douglas noted that he “had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I have no real intentions of going back.”

Douglas’s last major role in a movie was the 2023 Marvel adventure Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania; he also reprised the role of Hank Pym in the animated MCU series What If…...

Michael Douglas
Michael Douglas seemingly announces retirement
Michael Douglas
Michael Douglas teased it just last month, but now it seems as if he officially has retirement on the brain…although he’s still hesitant to make it official.

At a recent press conference at the Czech Republic’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (via EW), Michael Douglas, now 80, said retirement was imminent anyway, his last credit coming in the MCU with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. “I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop. I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set.” He added, “I have no real intentions of going back. I say I’m not retired because if something special came up, I’d go back. But otherwise, I’m quite happy just to watch my wife work.” Douglas married Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000.

Michael Douglas Reveals He’s Stepped Away From Acting With ‘No Real Intentions of Going Back’
Image
Michael Douglas has revealed that while he’s not officially retired from acting, he has “no real intentions” of returning to the big screen.

Speaking at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival to present a newly restored print of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest — which he won an Oscar for as a producer on the 1975 classic — the 80-year-old Douglas was asked about his future plans as an actor.

“I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop,” Douglas said (via Variety). “I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years,...

‘Franklin’ Netflix Review: Lebanese Crime Drama About Counterfeit Money Is Confusing & Confused
Image
Back in 2016, the Indian government supposedly made a historic move by demonetizing Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes and then forced the entire population of the country to turn their paper currency in at the bank. Apparently that was going to demolish the counterfeit money-making industry, thereby putting an end to all kinds of terrorist activities and whatnot. The government probably hoped that there would be a massive gap in the amount of notes that was in circulation and the amount that had been deposited in the bank, as that would allow them to claim that they had won the war on counterfeit money. Well, in reality, that gap turned out to be minuscule. In the next few years, it was reported that the new notes that had been printed had already been counterfeited because they were easier to duplicate than the older notes. This is only a very brief summary of...

Canneseries Jury President Norman Reedus Pulls Out
Image
Canneseries Jury President Norman Reedus has not been able to attend the fest due to work commitments.

The Walking Dead star was not present on last night’s Pink Carpet, which opened the fest, and his place as President has been taken by jury member Jeff Russo, we are told. A Canneseries spokeswoman confirmed the news. Reedus’ reps have been contacted for comment.

Last night’s Pink Carpet instead featured other members of the jury along with French actor Marie Colomb, who won the Madame Figaro Rising Star Award, a gong that last year went to Fallout’s Ella Purnell. However, there was no talent present in person from The Agency, the show which opened Canneseries, as that project starring Michael Fassbender and Jeffrey Wright has just rolled cameras on Season 2. Jodie Turner-Smith, who plays Sami in The Agency, instead delivered a video message in French.

Russo is now leading...

Canneseries Director Talks Luring American “Blockbusters” Like J.J. Abrams’ ‘Duster’, Attracting Industry Folk In The Post-MIPTV Era & This Year’s Official Selection Reflecting A “World Full Of Anxiety”
Image
Exclusive: Those who’ve journeyed to France for today’s Canneseries opening ceremony would be forgiven for feeling like the French Riviera feels a tad quieter than previous years, but 2025 of course represents the first time the fest is operating in the post-miptv era.

Albin Lewi, Canneseries Artistic Director, told us he’s not overly concerned by the loss of footfall and is using the opportunity to double down on what has made the young festival stand out over the past eight years while simultaneously beefing up its industry sidebar.

Lewi acknowledged that Canneseries will never be a buyer’s market per se – he noted that many shows launching in Cannes have already sold bountifully around the world – but said the fest has a role to play for both industry folk and punters keen to watch the next big hit.

“We don’t aim for thousands of people here we want the hundreds that matter,...

Play Dead: Noah Jupe to star in Jaume Collet-Serra survival thriller
Jaume Collet-Serra
Jaume Collet-Serra directed the horror thriller The Woman in the Yard, which has pulled in just $17 million at the global box office since reaching theatres last month, but back in December he brought us the action thriller Carry On, which quickly became one of the most popular movies on the Netflix streaming service. There has been talk of a sequel – but before any Carry On follow-ups get rolling, Collet-Serra has already lined up two other projects. He’ll be working with Netflix on a dramatic psychological thriller called An Innocent Girl and Deadline reports that Noah Jupe has signed on to star in another thriller Collet-Serra is pushing toward production, the survival thriller Play Dead.

Jupe may be best known for playing Marcus Abbott in A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II. Some of his other credits include Lady in the Lake, Franklin, The Undoing, Ford v Ferrari,...

Six of the Scariest Urban Legends in Gaming
Image
From hidden background scares to ghosts allegedly lurking in mainstream comedy films, the most memorable frights usually come from encountering something spooky in the place that you least expect it. And if there’s one artform that seems tailor made for creepy easter eggs, it has to be the world of video games.

Whether it’s the result of developers adding eerie elements to non-horror games or enthusiastic players overanalyzing innocuous details (not to mention the occasional mean-spirited hoaxer), there’s a long history of modern-day folklore surrounding video games. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the spookiest urban legends in gaming!

For the purposes of this list, we’ll only be discussing legends based on existing titles, so we won’t be including stories about fictional releases like Polybius, Killswitch or their modern-day Creepypasta equivalents. That being said, don...

Canneseries Unveils Lineup, Including J.J. Abrams’ ‘Duster,’ ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City,’ ‘The Agency’
Image
J.J. Abrams’ Max period crime thriller “Duster,” AMC Networks’ “The Walking Dead: Dead City,” Season 2 and Paramount+ with Showtime’s “The Agency” will bow at this year’s Canneseries whose 2025 lineup belies naysayers who argued, without a parallel MipTV and the buyers it brought to Cannes, the French TV festival would fail to draw series or celebs of weight.

“Dead City” is a world premiere, “Duster” looks like one too – it’s slated to be made available on Max on May 15. Starring Michael Fassbender, “The Agency” bowed on Paramount+ on Nov. 29, but not in France where it’s hugely awaited as a U.S. makeover of milestone French spy thriller “The Bureau.”

Among stars expected to walk the Festival’s pink carpet are main jury president Norman Reedus, absolute star of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.”

“Bridgerton’s” Nicola Coughlan, a Konbini Award recipient, will deliver a masterclass on April 28.

ITV Completes $193M Savings Program A Year Early As Annual Results Reveal Record Profits For ITV Studios
Image
ITV has completed its £150M ($193M) costs savings program a year early, according to full-year results published this morning, which showed record ITV Studios profits but a worrying dip in paid subscribers to streamer Itvx.

Nearly a year ago, ITV implemented dozens of layoffs, amounting to around 200, and today it revealed that it delivered £60M of savings in 2024, which was £10M up on the prior year.

This comprised £20M of the initial mega £150M savings plan, which has now been completed a year early, while £40M of savings were part of what is called “the ongoing transformation and efficiency programme.”

Relating to the “significant restructuring and transformation programme of the business,” ITV said it took a one-off restructuring and transformation cost of £50M. Redundancy costs, consultancy fees and other related costs of £36M were also noted.

ITV has consistently said it will make savings while continuing to spend the same amount of money on shows,...

Jamie Campbell Bower, Eddie Marsan Join 'The Rings of Power'

Jamie Campbell Bower and Eddie Marsan are about to get in the ring...of power, that is. The acclaimed British actors are no strangers to fantasy and genre fare, given the former's time on Stranger Things and the latter's time appearing in, well, seemingly everything else, but neither have played in the acclaimed and beloved universe of author J. R. R. Tolkien — until now.

That's right, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has upped the star power ante in season three, tapping Bower and Marsan to join the cast for the series' next installment. The show is currently in pre-production in England, working out of a new home in Shepperton Studios. According to Prime Video, Bower will be a series regular, while Marsan will appear in a recurring capacity. Further details are currently being kept under lock and key, too precious for this world as it currently...

Image
With a career spanning more than five decades, Michael Douglas has seen the movie business evolve before his very eyes, but lately he’s been critical of what the future holds for the industry, going so far as to say it’s been dumbed down by one region in particular: California’s Silicon Valley. Douglas got his start in 1966 as 'Jeep Driver' in his father’s film, Cast a Giant Shadow, the title of which is apropos when you consider that he’s a nepo baby that lived in the shadow of Kirk Douglas for much of his early years.

Currently in the midst of filming the upcoming drama Blood Knot, Douglas was on hand at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for an informal chat (via The Hollywood Reporter) that saw him discuss the changes in Hollywood over the years. While 35mm is still used in many productions,...

‘Real Time’: Michael Douglas Tells Bill Maher He’s “So Pissed” About Election Results
Image
After a politically charged week, Michael Douglas visited Bill Maher to discuss Donald Trump‘s victory.

As the 2x Oscar winner appeared Friday on Real Time with Bill Maher, he expressed his disappointment at the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, but offered his own personal silver lining.

“The other thing I just have to share, after Tuesday night, Wednesday morning, [I’m] just so pissed at this razor-thin race,” he told Maher. “It was gonna be so close, with all these polls … and it’s a wipeout. I had no idea how that could happen. So, I go down Wednesday morning to play golf just to clear my mind. I go play nine holes, and I get a hole-in-one.”

Referencing inflation and the death of the middle class, Douglas later said, “The very fact now that we can talk about Republicans as being the party for the people, and we are this elitist party on the left,...

Throughout all of the entertainment media, some franchises simply endure and rise above the rest, the Peanuts franchise has managed that feat with ease. What was once Charles M. Schulz's humble and simple comic strip has evolved into a multi-media franchise with some of the most recognizable characters in history. Charlie Brown and Snoopy have gone from bizarre characters to holiday staples and TV stars. The growth came over decades and was spurred on by daily comic releases, TV specials, and even a 2015 movie. When it was first released on October 2, 1950, Schulz never could have imagined the behemoth that his strip would become.

Michael Douglas' 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
As one of the most recognizable stars in Hollywood, Michael Douglas movies and TV shows have cemented him as a true icon in the industry. Though he is the son of acclaimed star Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas established his own incredible career in Hollywood which started on television and as a producer. Before Douglas was even a household name as an actor, he had already won an Oscar for producing One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. However, acting success and a Best Actor Oscar for himself would be on the horizon.

Douglas is perhaps best known for his more intense roles, such as in Basic Instinct, but the actor has also shown a lighter side in a number of roles. Streamers’ Evolving Acquisition Strategy Brings New Opportunities and Challenges for Broadcasters, Indie Producers
Image
Last month, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos enjoyed a coronation of sorts at the Royal Television Society conference in London, which the streaming giant was hosting. In a show of muscle, Netflix pulled in appearances from speakers including “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight and soccer star David Beckham, both of whom have projects at Netflix. Sarandos also took the opportunity to announce a first-look deal with “Baby Reindeer” creator Richard Gadd.

But it was his keynote speech that the audience, which included U.K. captains of industry such as BBC boss Tim Davie, had come to see. In it, Sarandos paid homage to the U.K.’s TV production sector but warned of the industry’s need to “embrace change.”

In recent years, however, it is the streamers who have had to change, particularly in Europe. When Netflix first arrived on the continent less than a decade ago, it imported a...

Canneseries Reveals Plans to Build Industry Heft via Networking, Discussion Clubs (Exclusive)
Image
Having hit new highs in 2023 and 2024, staging world premieres of Apple TV+’s “Silo” and “Franklin,” Amazon’s “Dead Ringers” and Disney+’s “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld,” Canneseries, one of Europe’s most prominent festivals, is looking to build its industry heft for its 2025 eighth edition but only second standalone event without a MipTV or Mipcom running aside the TV festival.

Season 8 of Canneseries, as its organizers call the 2025 eighth edition, runs April 24-29 on the Croisette.

In its biggest move, Canneseries will power up its program for professionals launched in 2020 and featuring both its already established Canneseries Writers Club and a Producers Club, targeting commissioners, program managers, producers, distributors, directors of private or public TV channels and platform directors.

Canneseries will now develop a bouquet of clubs – networking and discussion forums – under an Canneseries Industry umbrella, Benoît Louvet, Canneseries managing director, told Variety.

First up are new composers, technicians, casting directors and students clubs.

Michael Douglas Reminisces About Meeting Now-Wife Catherine Zeta-Jones During Career Tribute at Deauville Film Festival
Image
Michael Douglas reminisced about meeting his now wife Catherine Zeta-Jones at France’s Deauville American Film Festival in 1998 as he received a career tribute on Friday, the opening night of the milestone 50th anniversary edition.

Douglas, who was introduced on stage by his “Franklin” co-star Ludivine Sagnier (“Lupin”) and drew a long standing ovation, went on to talk — partly in French — about his long history with the Deauville Film Festival and precisely the “slight issue of Catherine.”

“I had just seen three weeks before I came to the festival this movie ‘Zorro,’ ‘Mon Dieu!,” joked Douglas. “When I arrived supporting our film, I think it was ‘Perfect Murder,’ I look at the catalogue and I see that ‘Zorro’ is coming the next night, so I ask my assistant, ‘Can you find out if Catherine Zeta-Jones is coming?’ And is she coming alone and if I could have a drink with her.

Thai Film ‘How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies’ Reaches $27 Million in Southeast Asia Rollout – Global Bulletin
Image
‘Millions’ Making Millions

The family drama “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” has become the highest-grossing Thai film of all time in The Philippines, distributor Westec Media claims.

The company, which released the film, does not quantify the receipts or the record. But there is little doubt of the film’s hit status across Asia. It has garnered THB1 billion (approximately $27 million) and achieved 10 million admissions, according to producer GDH559.

In Indonesia, where the film was released on May 15, it attracted 3.5 million admissions and became the highest grossing (non-local) Asian film in the country’s box office history. In Myanmar, following its release on May 31, has also become the highest-grossing Thai film ever recorded. It stands as the highest-grossing Thai film in Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.

The heartwarming story follows a teenage university dropout (Putthipong “Billkin” Assaratanakul), who quits his job to care for his ailing grandmother (Usha Seamkhum) to secure a large inheritance.

Ray Richmond: Best Limited Series deserves more than five nominee slots, and it’s time to alter the category formula
Image
Wherever I go, when I tell people that I work as an editor for Gold Derby, they never fail to bring up their latest binge-fest and how obsessed they were with it. “Ripley” occupied that space for several weeks, replaced by “Baby Reindeer,” then “Fellow Travelers.” Before that, I ran into a bunch of “Lessons in Chemistry” fans, and friends who were absolutely obsessed with “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” “Fargo: Season 5” and “True Detective: Night Country” also had, and continue to have, legions of followers. And of course, “Shogun” consumed people for a good long while.

The point is that Best Limited Series has grown the past few years into the hottest and most prestigious Emmy category, and that’s especially true in 2024 with the depletion of the Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series due to the 2023 strikes and the departure of shows like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso.

Emmy spotlight on Michael Douglas (‘Franklin’): ‘It’s Michael’s gifts and his charms’ to play the legendary Benjamin Franklin
Image
It might have been a surprise to many when Oscar and Emmy winner Michael Douglas signed on to play American founding father Benjamin Franklin. The Oscar and Emmy winner doesn’t look much like Franklin, but that was certainly fine with co-writer Howard Korder. In a recent Gold Derby webchat, the executive producer of the Apple TV+ limited series reveals, “It’s Michael’s gifts and his charms and his willingness. I think you want to see the persona through that as opposed to a full on impersonation, which would always be questionable.”

Co-writer and executive producer Kirk Ellis adds about the very famous actor in this Emmy spotlight, “For me, it’s the fact that you’ve got essentially a historical superstar being play a modern superstar of film and TV.”

Douglas won an Academy Award his first time as a producer, for the Best Picture champ “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest...

Jon Bon Jovi on Possibly Never Touring Again, Taylor Swift Creating Her Own ‘Industry’ and Coming Close to Landing Val Kilmer’s Role in ‘Heat’
Image
Jon Bon Jovi is a snowbird — the nickname given to people of a certain age who flee their northern homes during the winter months to areas with warmer climates.

It’s late April and the famous New Jersey native is in Palm Beach, Fla.

“My license still says the great state of New Jersey,” the Bon Jovi frontman tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “I’m there when it’s not cold. But when it’s cold, these old bones are on the beach.”

The rocker, 62, is talking and thinking a lot about his age lately. While his Hulu docuseries, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” chronicles the iconic rock band’s rise to the top, the through line of the four episodes is the singer’s struggle to overcome vocal problems in time for the group’s 40th anniversary tour.

As of today, Bon...

Eddie Marsan on Playing a U.S. President in ‘Franklin,’ Amy Winehouse’s Dad in ‘Black to Back’ and Staying Under the Radar
Image
Last month Eddie Marsan faced a happy dilemma: two high-profile projects in which he co-stars –Apple TV+ series “Franklin” led by Michael Douglas and Sam Taylor Johnson’s highly-anticipated Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” – were both being released on the same day, April 12, in Marsan’s native U.K. (“Back to Black came out in the U.S. on May 17).

The resulting publicity maelstrom was, Marsan says, “intense.” And yet despite that, the actor – who has starred in over 150 screen projects including “Ray Donovan,” “Deadpool 2” and Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes,” can truthfully claim to be “not really that famous.”

Partly that’s because his highest profile roles in the U.S. have seen the East London-born actor putting on an American accent, including in “Franklin,” in which he plays the second U.S. President, John Adams. Marsan has a long history with the character, having once been...
