Prime Video has developed a strange reputation over the last few years for expanding beloved sci-fi/fantasy franchises. Following up on the success of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Prime Video will be turning its attention to the world of Blade Runner, as filming recently wrapped on the upcoming series, Blade Runner 2099. As the title indicates, the show will take place 50 years after the critical darling/financial flop Blade Runner 2049, while Ridley Scott, who helmed the original film, will be serving as a producer.
Thus far, the show’s premise has been kept tightly under wraps, but what little we know hints that Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh will serve as the lead. She’s set to play Olwen, a Replicant nearing the end of her life, and she’ll be joined by an ensemble cast including Hunter Schafer, Lewis Gribben, and Tom Burke (most...

Tom Burke, known for his work in “Furiosa” and the BBC series “Strike,” is gearing up for a major role in the upcoming “Blade Runner 2099” series on Prime Video. This series will pick up after the events of the iconic Blade Runner films, continuing the exploration of what it means to be human in a world full of advanced technology and artificial beings.
While details about the plot remain under wraps, Burke teased some exciting aspects of the series. He revealed that Blade Runner 2099 will have a visual style much closer to the original Blade Runner film, directed by Ridley Scott, than its sequel, Blade Runner 2049. Burke describes the aesthetic as a “Baroque, eclectic mix of cultures and time periods,” which fans of the original movie will likely recognize.

Seis nuevos episodios se estrenan este abril. © Netflix
El reparto de esta nueva temporada está formado por Michele Austin (Hard Truths), Ben Bailey Smith (David Brent: Life on the Road), Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing), Josh Finan (Say Nothing), James Nelson-Joyce (The Outlaws), Will Poulter (Guardianes de la galaxia Vol. 3...

Nearly two years have passed since Netflix debuted a new season of Black Mirror, even if it feels like much longer. The streamer has finally unveiled a trailer and new images for the upcoming seventh season, along with announcing an April 10, 2025 premiere date.
“You can expect a mix of genres and styles,” stated series creator Charlie Brooker during the 2024 Geeked Week festival. “We’ve got six episodes this time, and two of them are basically feature-length. Some of them are deeply unpleasant, some are quite funny, and some are emotional.”
Among them is the much-anticipated sequel to one of Black Mirror‘s most popular, critically acclaimed episodes, season four’s “USS Callister.” The sequel marks the first time Brooker has ever revisited any of the previous six seasons’ episodes.

Despite being on air for over a decade, Black Mirror continues to be one of TV's most unpredictable and highly anticipated series. Now with Season 7 on the horizon, fans are once again ready to be thrown into a world that eerily parallels our own. Just to prove that the show is ready to grab the attention once again, ahead of the trailer release, the official Black Mirror page delivered fans a mysterious binary code as just one of a series of upcoming teases of what is to come.
The official Black Mirror page has been quite active over the past week, dropping pictures and sneak peeks to keep viewers enthusiastic, but the most recent update offers a binary code that, when decoded, reads "You Are Not Ready," teasing a major update for viewers moving forward. The new season of Black Mirror is said to be a return — in more ways than one. In the newly released trailer for Season 7, it looks like more than a few characters and episodes will be revisited, including the now iconic ''USS Callister" episode from Season 4. And according to series creator Charlie Brooker, this new batch of episodes will also be a return to form for fans of the darkly satirical and at-times harrowing anthology series.
Calling the forthcoming season "a little bit Og Black Mirror," Brooker noted that Season 7 — which is slated to hit Netflix on April 10, 2025, goes "back to basics in many ways. They're all sci-fi stories," a welcome change after the past few seasons have focused more on the horror aspect than anything. "There's definitely some horrifying things that occur," he added, "but maybe not in an overt horror-movie way. There's definitely some disturbing content in it.

A seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror will be making its way to the Netflix streaming service this year, and it has been previously revealed that Black Mirror season 7 will consist of six episodes, one of which will be a sequel to the popular season 4 episode USS Callister. The streamer has now revealed new images from the season, along with a trailer. It has also been announced that the new episodes will premiere on April 10.
Created and written by Charlie Brooker, Black Mirror is an anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable – and sometimes unsettling – conclusion. Because the world does not feel dystopian enough, “Black Mirror” is finally releasing its Season 7 premiere date. The sci-fi anthology from Charlie Brooker will return on April 10 with six new episodes.
This new season will contain a previously announced followup to the Emmy-winning “USS Callister” starring Cristin Milioti. Fittingly, the trailer for this new season starts with Milioti’s Lieutenant Cole gasping as an unseen voice says “We’d like to welcome you back.”
The trailer then cycles between clips of wild scenarios that are never fully explained. One minute, a man is putting on a Batman mask. The next, Issa Rae is being transported into a black-and-white world filled with AI people. Still the next, Rashida Jones collapses like a powered off robot while pitching cereal in front of a class of children. You know, classic “Black Mirror” stuff.
But the most exciting part of this first trailer does...

Ridley Scott's classic sci-fi actioner Blade Runnercreated a futuristic dystopia in which humans and replicants (a.k.a. synthetic humanoids) fight for their personhood — a world and moral question that's endured for decades. Since its 1982 debut, a growing fanbase has watched the original movie spawn an ever-expanding franchise. Filmmakers have made several spin-off shorts, Blade Runner Black Out 2022, 2036: Nexus Dawn, and 2048: Nowhere to Run, that further lay out the universe's lore. They also made the offshoot animated series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, as well as started developing an upcoming limited series on Prime Video called Blade Runner 2099. However, its biggest sequel installment in the saga so far is the film, Blade Runner 2049.
The 2017 epic continued the original story 30 years later, with Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role as Rick Deckard, a former replicant hunter, and Ryan Gosling as the newly-introduced blade runner, K. Scott acted...

Last year, the Prime Video limited series Blade Runner 2099 – which is, of course, a continuation of the franchise that began with the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner and then got a long-awaited follow-up called Blade Runner 2049, which had Denis Villeneuve at the helm, in 2017 – made its way through production. We’re waiting to hear when the show is going to premiere, but in the meantime, cast member Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) has told Variety that Blade Runner 2099 is closer to the aesthetic of the original film than to 2049.
Tom Burke stars in the series alongside Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy), Katelyn Rose Downey (The Nun II), Daniel Rigby (Renegade Nell), Johnny Harris (A Gentleman in Moscow”), Amy Lennox (Only Child), Sheila Atim (The Woman...

The Alien saga continues with a mysterious package containing five (!) new clips. FX is in full promo mode, having already shown a clip of the Xenomorph from their upcoming series Alien: Earth in a recent, larger promo video for their 2025 lineup. The upcoming spinoff to the iconic sci-fi franchise is set two years before the events of Ridley Scott's original 1979 film, in the year 2120, when five corporations – Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold – control all technological advancement, promising the world a new tomorrow. Helmed by Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley, Alien: Earth is already heavily tied to the original film, but the data drive that we received from FX shows a possibly familiar furry friend showing audiences around the soon-to-crash Uscss Maginot.
The show's synopsis reads as follows:
"When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, a young woman (Sydney Chandler) and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers...

Tom Burke has been chatting about the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 series and says it’s closer to Ridley Scott’s original sci-fi classic in its aesthetics.

Blade Runner has become one of the most ambitious sci-fi franchises over the years, largely thanks to the work of directors Ridley Scott and Denis Villeneuve, and now the franchise is now set to expand into television for its first live-action series. Tom Burke and Michelle Yeoh will star in Blade Runner 2099, the upcoming show set 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, which is coming to Prime Video. Ridley Scott's Blade Runneris carrying on an impressive legacy. Fans of the 1982 sci-fi classic likely never dreamed of getting another film in the dystopian neo-noir world Scott expertly crafted, that is, until Denis Villeneuve got his shot at making a sequel. With Blade Runner 2049, the Dune director made a sequel so good it could stand on its own, and now Prime Video has put together an impressive team to expand on the Blade Runner saga in Blade Runner 2099, an upcoming sequel series that promises to take the franchise back to its roots.

Euphoria's Hunter Schafer revealed today via a TikTok video that her renewed passport now lists her gender as "male" — a result of President Donald Trump's executive order stating that the United States government would only recognize two, binary genders: male and female. A transgender actress and activist for LGBTQ+ rights, Schafer has recently become a well-known face in Hollywood thanks to her roles in HBO's Euphoria as well as the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
With the veritable hailstorm of executive orders that Trump has signed since taking office one month ago, it can be difficult to distinguish which orders have actually affected government policy. Exclusive: Apple TV+ has landed the rights to High Wire, the thriller novel from international bestselling author Candice Fox, for development as a TV series, sources tell Deadline.

Many of you will no doubt recall the near-endless list of actors we saw suggested for Marvel's First Family in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. An official announcement was finally made but the rumours...well, they became a little exhausting.
Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is finally somewhere on the horizon and could be released in theaters as soon as 2027. It's incredibly important to get that franchise right after the damage done by Fox in those final few years and casting the best people possible will be essential.
We fully trust in Sarah Finn, of course, and expect to be suitably impressed. In the meantime, quite a few names are already doing the rounds online and we figured it would be a good time to bring you up to speed with everyone rumoured to be in the running.
You can check out a full breakdown of the names by clicking the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

Decades after its release, Blade Runner remains a sci-fi classic, hailed as one of the best ever made, with a story about identity and what makes us human. Set in 2019—the not-too-distant future at the time of its 1982 release—the film follows Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a hunter known as a blade runner given the job of tracking down four escaped humanoid androids called replicants who are searching for their creator. The movie was directed by Ridley Scott, whose multiple cuts of the film can drastically change its implications, especially the ending, with alternate versions open to interpretation. It was based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, and a sequel series, Blade Runner 2099, is expected to arrive on Prime in 2025.

A seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror will be making its way to the Netflix streaming service sometime in 2025, and it has been previously revealed that Black Mirror season 7 will consist of six episodes, one of which will be a sequel to the popular season 4 episode USS Callister. Now, an image has made its way online that shows returning USS Callister cast member Cristin Milioti (who was recently seen in The Penguin) in the new episode. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
Given the generally harsh fan and critical reaction to Star Trek: Section 31, it remains to be seen if Michelle Yeoh will be called upon to reprise her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou in a sequel. But the Oscar-winning actress, who just wrapped an extensive promo tour on behalf of Section 31 and served as one of its executive producers, is not lacking for upcoming projects.
Yeoh can currently be seen on screen and at home, now that it’s available for streaming, in Wicked. She will return as Madame Morrible, the duplicitous headmistress of Craig Hall at Shiz University, in the much-anticipated sequel, Wicked: For Good. The musical fantasy will be released on November 21, 2025.
The actress has also lent her voice to the ongoing animated sci-fi/fantasy show, Ark: The Animated Series, which streams on Paramount+. Six episodes aired in 2024 and at least as many episodes will premiere later this year.

Quick Links How Michelle Yeoh Got Involved With Star Trek How Section 31 Got Its Start as the First Spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery Section 31 May Have Been Saved by 'Everything, Everywhere All At Once' After Helping to Revive Star Trek on TV, Michelle Yeoh Resurrected Its Movies
The following contains cast spoilers for Star Trek: Section 31, now streaming on Paramount+.
The latest Star Trek film is unique in the universe for many reasons. Starring Michelle Yeoh as former Terran Emperor Philippa Georgiou, Section 31 introduces a side of the Star Trek galaxy that fans haven't seen before. One way it's not unique, however, is that before it was a film, Section 31 was supposed to be a television series for Paramount.
While the development of Section 31 wasn't nearly as fraught as Star Trek: The Motion Picture (which itself was also meant to be a TV series), it came close.

Here’s What Ridley Scott Said About Turning Down Blade Runner 2049 (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Let’s take a moment to picture this: Ridley Scott stuck in a sci-fi dilemma for the ages. The chance to direct the sequel to one of the genre’s greatest films or stick with the dark, suspense-filled world of Alien? The man didn’t have to make that choice, but… he did. And looking back, Scott doesn’t wear it as a badge of honor. “I shouldn’t have had to make that decision,” he once admitted to Empire, adding, “But I had to. I should have done Blade Runner 2.”
Here’s a truth bomb from the king of dystopian cinema: Ridley Scott passed on directing Blade Runner 2049 in 2017 because he was knee-deep in Alien: Covenant. Tough choice, but he made it. Instead of diving back into replicant territory, he took on...

Ridley Scott, the director of Blade Runner, revealed that he had to fight to get Harrison Ford cast in the 1982 sci-fi movie. This demonstrates that even big stars have faced skepticism from movie bosses. In a recent chat with GQ magazine, Scott talked about his challenges in getting Ford to join the film.
At that time, Ford had acted as Han Solo in “Star Wars,” but that didn’t persuade the people funding the movie. “Scott told GQ that Harrison Ford wasn’t a star then.” “He had just finished flying the Millennium Falcon in ‘Star Wars.'”
Scott remembered a straightforward discussion about the casting decision with his financiers. The director recalled, “I remember my financiers saying, ‘Who is Harrison Ford?'” He replied simply, “I said, ‘You’ll see.'”

Although Harrison Ford is synonymous with multiple franchises and countless memorable performances, he wasn’t always such a household name.
Ridley Scott recently revealed that the actor, who just received his fifth Golden Globe nomination, wasn’t such an easy sell for the lead role of Rick Deckard in his 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner.
“Harrison Ford was not a star yet,” explained Scott to GQ. “He had just finished flying the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars. I remember my financiers saying, ‘Who the f— is Harrison Ford?’ I said, ‘You’re going to find out.’ So Harry became my leading man.”
In addition to his roles in Blade Runner and Star Wars, Ford’s leading man status has long been cemented by his performances in the Indiana Jones films, The Fugitive (1993) and his upcoming MCU debut as Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World, premiering Feb. 14 in theaters.

Hello, dear reader. You tune into this website because we write about Netflix stuff. The truth is that while we adore the streamer, we also are human enough to know there is stuff worth watching beyond Netflix. Barely, but some.
The funny bit is that Netflix is so important and huge that many of these shows will probably eventually find their way to being streamed on your favorite subscription service. If someone wants a lot of views then they will go to Netflix.
Still, it would be a disservice to you to not know what excellence might eventually be coming to the streamer. Maybe a few years from now, but you'll need to know. And here are five shows that should not be missed.
Five non-Netflix shows you should watch in 2025The Paradise (January 28 on Hulu)
Put Sterling K. Brown into nearly anything and you are probably going to be a winner.

Ridley Scott is a director that has known what it is like to see his movies fail to impress critics, bomb at the box office and then discover an incredible cult following decades later. One such movie to go through this process was Blade Runner, arguably one of the greatest masterpieces of Scott’s long career, and an extraordinary example of how sometimes the fate of a movie is not in the hands of those who made it.
In a recent roundtable for The Hollywood Reporter, Scott recalled how a bad review of Blade Runner by The New Yorker’s Pauline Kael was something he considered to be “industrial espionage,” and how only a chance intervention a decade after the film’s release saw it finally get the recognition it deserved through what Scott dubs “the craziness of Hollywood.” He explained:

Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 is the long-awaited follow-up to the '80s sci-fi classic Blade Runner, which itself was loosely based on Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Set thirty years after the events of Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049 has the series' dystopian future depicted in an even further state of degradation.
Thematically, 2049 is an extension of the original, continuing to ask questions about life, humanity, the nature of the soul, and free will in a world that's now completely past the point of saving. But how does 2049 end, and what does it mean for Officer K, Rick Deckard, and others? The movie touches on a budding rebellion, but what does the ending mean for the future of that movement?

As 2025's line-up of TV shows continues to take shape, there are plenty of great sci-fi shows on the horizon. This includes some shows which are returning after long waits, like Andor and Severance, and some exciting new concepts, like Alien: Earth and Blade Runner 2099, both of which are bringing huge movie franchises to the small screen for the first time. Sci-fi fans will have a wealth of options to choose from in 2025.
Many of the most exciting shows of 2025 happen to be sci-fi shows, like Stranger Things season 5 and Black Mirror season 7. These shows range from comedies to dark sci-fi horror shows, so there could be something for all fans of the genre to enjoy. Although it's still too soon for many of these shows to have set release dates, it's still a relief to see that they have committed to a 2025 release window, since some of them...

Earlier this year, we shared updates as a cast was assembled for the Prime Video limited series Blade Runner 2099 – which is, of course, a continuation of the franchise that began with the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner and then got a long-awaited follow-up called Blade Runner 2049, which had Denis Villeneuve at the helm, in 2017. Now, Discussing Film has shared a short and simple update on the project: Blade Runner 2099 has wrapped filming!

We've just had a huge update on the progress of Blade Runner 2099, the hugely exciting sci-fi series coming to Prime Video next year, and it seems like they've managed to meet that goal of finishing production before 2025 — by the skin of their replicant teeth. Building on Ridley Scott’s legendary franchise, Blade Runner 2099 moves the cyberpunk world forward with a story set fifty years after Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049.

The Blade Runner franchise received a long-awaited sequel in 2017 from Denis Villeneuve, and although it was hailed by many as another masterpiece, the film failed to make a splash at the box office. Since then, another big-screen installment has been out of the conversation, but audiences will be re-entering the futuristic neo-noir world soon enough. Amazon is currently developing Blade Runner 2099, a television series starring Michelle Yeoh that will serve as the latest sequel to Ridley Scott's original 1982 classic.

A returning fan favorite has revealed her character's new storyline in the eagerly anticipated third season of The White Lotus. In Season 1, Natasha Rothwell played Belinda Lindsey, a spa manager from the White Lotus resort in Hawaii.
Rothwell will reprise the role for which she earned an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in the upcoming season of the acclaimed HBO satirical vacation anthology set in Thailand. Following last year's announcement of Belinda's return, the actor has refused to divulge any plot information about her role until now. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rothwell joked about how she had been sworn to secrecy regarding how and why her character relocates from Hawaii. "The tension has been unbearable, honestly," she said. "My hairdresser, the cab driver, people have been shaking me down for information, and I'm just like, 'I've signed my life away. I can't tell you anything.

The next installment in the Blade Runner franchise is almost ready. Blade Runner 2099 has just received a massive production update.
Per DiscussingFilm, Blade Runner 2099 has wrapped filming. Production on the limited sci-fi series began in Prague in May 2024, with filming kicking off the following month. Rob Hardy and Ula Pontikos served as cinematographers. This production update comes roughly 18 months after the Prime Video series was originally set to begin filming. However, Prime Video froze production on Blade Runner 2099 until May 2024 due to the then-ongoing writers' strike. This delay resulted in the production leaving Northern Ireland's Belfast Harbour Studios once the strike had concluded for Prague, Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic, the location for Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu,” starring Bill Skarsgård, Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp, has given a major boost to its production incentives.

Added to that an incentive of 35% for digital production and animation, excluding live-action sequences, has been introduced. Also, the maximum amount that can be claimed per project has been tripled to $19 million.
Another change is that documentary series can now tap into the production incentive.
In terms of the production incentives, the most significant changes will take effect at the start of January 2025. The entire law including all changes will come into force in 2026.

For a detailed explanation of how the incentives will work see here.

It's hard to definitively categorize sci-fi into an individual box. Unlike other genres, there is never a singular concept that sci-fi focuses on. Rather, it imagines scenarios in which humanity is unbounded from limits on technological innovation and advancement. Thus, the possibilities are virtually endless. In these movies, dystopian futures are a reality, the universe is explored to its greatest ends, and extraterrestrial life is prominent. Even with unlimited potential, it seems like the most famous sci-fi works typically implement a pessimistic perspective.
For example, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner franchise, which will continue in 2025 with the series Blade Runner 2099, takes on the concept of hyper-advanced AI but does so in a bleak, depressing tone. Meeting other life forms has some positive implications, but the genre always assumes the worst. Several upcoming Alien movies will surely reinforce this trend, and offer a continuation in the story of the vicious Xenomorphs.

The Czech Republic is hoping to lure more Hollywood projects to the landlocked country after a series of improvements to its production incentive were greenlit.
The country’s senate in Prague today passed a number of amendments that will make top-line changes to the Audiovisual Act beginning in January. The new legislation follows long-running talks and campaigning by several industry bodies, and will provide a “dramatic boost” to the country’s production sector, according to the Czech Film Commission.
This comes as the Czech Republic looks to cement its place as an international production hub in the face of increasing competition from other country’s newer incentives and rebates, and as overseas hubs look to attract Hollywood back to their shores following last year’s labor strikes.
Among the changes, which are the first in more than a decade, the Czech Film Fund will be renamed the Czech Audiovisual Fund.

Michelle Yeoh stopped by the Variety Lounge, presented by Film AlUla at the Red Sea Film Festival, where she chatted with Variety‘s London Bureau Chief Alex Ritman about working with director Jon M. Chu on “Wicked,” her hopes for the film’s awards chances and the current whereabouts of her “Everything Everywhere All at Once” Oscar trophy.
When Chu first approached Yeoh about starring in the film, she hadn’t yet seen the original Broadway musical.
“Because he invited me to join ‘Wicked,’ I thought, ‘Well, first of all, I have to know what I’m going to be doing and why it has been around for 20 years,’” Yeoh said. “And when I saw it first in New York and then next in London, I think I very quickly caught on. I understood the magic, the allure of ‘Wicked.’ Then I went to him, I said, ‘You know John,...
