"Missing " (Thu., 8 p.m. Et on ABC) tells the story of single mother Rebecca Winstone (Judd) on a quest in Europe to find her son who's gone missing. She's a single mother because ten years ago while traveling abroad with their son, her husband Paul (Sean Bean) was killed in a vehicle explosion.

Bean is listed as a series regular, though, so it was either a fake-out for the pilot to make his death a bigger shock, or perhaps he didn't die after all. A third possibility has the show relying heavily on flashbacks, during which Bean could appear.

In the premiere, he's kidnapped while studying abroad in Italy and Becca uses her old skills to try to get him back.

We find out two very important things here. Becca's past was not typical for the CIA, and the current person in charge (Cliff Curtis) is surprised by how many skills she still has. In fact, from her fighting, we can see that she's been keeping herself in shape all these years. She's also got connections that make you wonder what she was up to all those years ago.

Fans of Ashley Judd know she's made a great career by running... and jumping... and shooting.... and screaming. Basically, all things action. So Missing makes for an ideal comeback vehicle, following five years away from the acting game.

In the series premiere we are introduced to retired CIA agent Rebecca Winstone. She is an overprotective mother who apprehensively allows her only child, Michael, to enroll in architecture school in Rome.

To understand what makes Rebecca tick, the show opened with an incident 10 years prior in which her husband, Paul, was assassinated in front of their child. It's later referenced that she retired from the CIA as a result. Paul and Michael were in Vienna at the time so obviously Becca would be even more afraid to allow Michael to study abroad in Europe.

There's also the fact that she and Paul were both operatives and obviously know the ins and outs and safety statistics.

I published my review of ABC's "Missing " on Tuesday. Now it's your turn. Chicago – I’m right on the critical median with ABC’s “Missing .” On one hand, it’s inconsistent, poorly written, and kind of just silly. It’s tempting to dismiss like an overheated Lifetime movie. On the other hand, Ashley Judd is better than most Lifetime leads, the action is actually pretty tight, and I like the creative potential of a show that’s promised viewers that it will wrap up its first story in ten episodes. There’s a certain genre of television that I’m not very friendly with, and it’s something I should confess before anyone goes too far in this review. It’s a genre that is dominated by shows with initials as their names these days, and they are geared actually toward people somewhere around my age. I find them awful in general, stunted by broken, goofy dialog that often seems to be written by people who have never heard people speak in real life, and pushed along by action scenes that are curiously hokey, but with delusions of grandeur.

If such shows are your bag, and you can deal with Ashley Judd as an ex-cia badass (but, I repeat myself), then I’ve got a show for you.

The actress, who took a five-year break from acting and returns this Thursday on ABC's Missing , admitted to me this week that she had no intention of breaking back into the business on network television.

But the new drama is unique in that it's taking her around the world, with episodes filmed on location in locales such as Prague and Croatia.

From Alias to Revenge, ABC has a nice history of taking rote concepts and making them cool or tapping in to our love of guilty pleasure.
