One might assume Disney's animated shows are strictly geared toward younger audiences, but there are several shows that adults can enjoy, too. The shows aren't meant solely for adults and are still tame, as Disney is likely aware younger audiences will still be tuning in. Recent animated Disney shows inspired by movies like Monsters at Work or reboots of older series such as DuckTales can be enjoyed by older audiences for their nostalgic elements, but they aren't necessarily trying to draw in adult viewers.
Animated Disney series aimed toward older audiences are a bit more serious and focus on telling a story that builds throughout a season, rather than simply trying to teach viewers important life lessons. Shows like Tron: Uprising and Star Wars: The Bad Batch are based on characters and stories from popular live-action franchises adult audiences are largely familiar with. Thanks to an interview done by Empire Magazine with Joachim Rnning, the director behind Tron: Ares, we have our first real insight into the newest entry of this Disney-based franchise. While the red-clad armor and vehicle in Empires exclusive image looks mighty impressive and holds that futuristic aesthetic synonymous with Tron, there seems to already be a wavering consensus online for this movie and the factors causing this are aplenty.
The first detail that moviegoers are concerned about is that the story revolves around a program invading the real world, which has never been done before in the series. After playing Number Six in Battlestar Galactica, Tricia Helfer took on quite a few more acting roles. One of her most notable post-Battlestar roles was playing Charlotte in Lucifer. Helfer will also be appearing in upcoming projects including Hello Beautiful.
Tricia Helfer continued her acting career long after the end of her iconic role in Battlestar Galactica. Before joining the 2005 reboot of the legendary 1978 science fiction series, she began her career as a fashion model in the early 1990s, winning the Ford Models' Supermodel of the World contest in 1992. She retired from the industry in 2002, moving on to a career in acting with early roles that included episodes of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Jeremiah, as well as the Judd Nelson crime thriller White Rush.
Helfer was part of the Battlestar Galactica cast in the 2005 series and continued playing one of the show's main characters for all four seasons through its finale.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles get a new redesign in fanart by comic industry artist Eric Canete, inspired by the Last Ronin series. The new design features a more muscular build, longer necks, sharp beaks, spiky shells, and warrior-like clothing, deviating from their iconic bandanas. The Turtles' weapons are also enhanced, with additional swords and a bow and arrow, giving them a grittier and more badass look.
The reptilian brothers who make up the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have instantly recognizable character designs made popular by color-coded bandanas and their use of vastly different weapons that have made them icons around the globe. And in a new piece of fanart drawn by a prolific comic industry artist, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo get a redesign worthy of their own Last Ronin-like series.

Disney, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network are responsible for many popular animated shows that appeal to young demographics. Shows like Phineas and Ferb, Spongebob Squarepants, and Adventure Time had a significant impact and became spectacular hits for younger audiences.
However, there are a good number of acclaimed animated shows from these networks that don't receive the same recognition. These shows either had serious competition or viewers weren't ready for something new. These animated shows are criminally underrated, from movie-based series like Tron: Uprising to brilliantly written cartoons like The Looney Tunes Show.

We knew something was on its way from Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski but we weren’t expecting this: a new animated movie from Warner Bros. Animation and WB Home Entertainment.
Straczynski described it as: “Classic Babylon 5: raucous, heartfelt, nonstop, a ton of fun through time and space, and a love letter to the fans.”
It might not be as well known as his comic-book work, but Straczynski actually has a background in animation – writing episodes of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra: Princess of Power, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Captain Power, The Real Ghostbusters, and other 1980s action favorites.
We know that Bruce Boxleitner is back – which is also fitting, as he’s got some hefty voice acting chops, reprising his most famous other science fiction role for the 2012 show Tron: Uprising – but we’re going to have to wait another week for more details.

The 1996 version of Matilda counts on the talents of various well-known actors, but is Pee-wee Herman also part of the cast of Matilda? Roald Dahl wrote a variety of stories, with many becoming classics of children’s literature, among them the 1988 novel Matilda. The popularity of Matilda has been such that it has been adapted to other media, including a two-part radio program, a stage musical, and a film adaptation of the musical. In 1996, Matilda made the jump to the big screen, with Danny DeVito as director and Mara Wilson playing the title character.
Matilda tells the story of the title character, a child prodigy who is neglected by her parents and tormented at school by the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). Matilda gradually realizes that she has psychokinetic abilities, and she starts to use these to deal with her abusive parents, Harry (DeVito) and Zinnia Wormwood (Rhea Perlman), and Miss Trunchbull.

With the announcement of Tron 3, it sounds like Disney is already wasting Tron: Legacy’s perfect villain setup. Already, Disney has had a messy past with Tron, whether it be the forgotten sequel Tron 2.0, the mishandling of Tron: Uprising, or Tron 3’s turbulent development. These unrealized prospects and untapped potential beg the question of how much good faith remains in another Tron sequel after so much disappointment.
In 2023, however, Disney announced it was revisiting Tron 3 with director Joachim Ronning. Premiering in 1982, Tron became a Disney cult classic starring actors Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner. Over two decades after Tron’s debut in theaters, Disney finally delivered a nostalgic reboot film, Tron: Legacy, that continued the story and hinted toward big plans for the franchise. Despite Tron: Legacy setting up a third movie with Edward Dillinger Jr. as its villain, played by sci-fi movie alumni Cillian Murphy,...

When Alberto Mielgo was developing his animated short film, “The Windshield Wiper,” he knew he didn’t want to do traditional family-friendly animation. He found himself coming back to a theme he’s always been drawn towards: relationships. “I kind of end up using it in many of my projects. I feel that nowadays, love is evolving together with society and now society has drastically changed over the last decade,” Mielgo tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). Focusing on this theme led to him going down many different paths that would help lead him to what he wanted to make. “This film talks about where is love nowadays in terms of society. It’s basically what is social love rather than what is love now nowadays.”

Disney has released a wonderfully charming new trailer for the upcoming Disney+ film, Lady and the Tramp. The film is a retelling of the classic 1955 animated classic that follows a pampered house dog named Lady and a tough but lovable stray named Tramp, who embark on an unexpected adventure. Despite their differences, they grow close together, form a relationship, and come to understand the value of home.
The movie has a talented voice cast that includes Tessa Thompson as Lady; Justin Theroux as Tramp; Kiersey Clemons as Darling; Thomas Mann as Jim Dear; Janelle Monáe as Peg; Yvette Nicole Brown as Aunt Sarah; and the great Sam Elliott as the voice of Trusty.
The movie actually looks like it could be fun, and one of the aspects of it that I like is that they used real dogs to film it. I’ve been getting a little tired of CGI animals in movies,...

Alberto Mielgo, who won an Emmy for his work on Tron: Uprising and is up for another for his episode of Netflix’s animated anthology series Love, Death & Robots, is making his first feature film. Stampede, the production outfit run by Greg Silverman, has come aboard to produce the pic, which Mielgo will write and direct based on an original concept. The plot is under wraps. Vince Gerardis of Startling will serve as producer, along with John Morgan.
Mielgo was credited as a visual consultant for his early work on Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which ended up winning the Animated Feature Oscar this year. The Spanish animator’s episode “The Witness” from Love, Death & Robots was nominated last week for an Emmy in the Outstanding Short Form Animated Program category.
The new deal was negotiated by Chris Bosco and Anna Pinar of Stampede and Gerardis.

The co-creators of ABC's hit Disney series Once Upon a Time, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, have officially signed on as executive producers and showrunners of Apple's upcoming reboot of Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories.
I have high hopes for this Amazing Stories reboot. Judging by what these two guys did with Once Upon a Time, it seems like the series will be in good hands. The series was previously being developed by Brad Fuller, but he ended up dropping out because "Fuller’s vision for the show did not mesh with the more family-friendly approach sought by Apple and Amblin Television."
Horowitz and Kitsis got their start writing for shows like Popular and Felicity. They then joined the writing staff of Lost and ended up writing the feature film Tron: Legacy. They also developed the animated television series Tron: Uprising. Now that Once Upon a Time is done,...

Now that “Once Upon a Time” has ended its lengthy run at ABC, executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are moving on to a new adventure. The duo have signed on as writers and executive producers of Steven Spielberg’s revival of “Amazing Stories” for Apple.
Kitsis and Horowitz fill the void left by Bryan Fuller and Hart Hanson, both of whom departed the project in February. They’ll serve as executive producers and showrunners on the show, which is also executive produced by Spielberg and Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.
Kitsis and Horowitz recently extended their overall deal with ABC Studios by four more years, keeping them there through 2022. But the duo will be on loan to Apple in order to do “Amazing Stories,” which comes from Universal TV and Amblin TV.

Nearly eight years after the release of Tron: Legacy, fans have mostly given up on the chances of seeing another chapter in the cyberpunk saga, but the Tron franchise lives on, albeit on life support. The underrated and little-seen animated spin-off series, Tron: Uprising, originally aired in 2012, is currently streaming on Hulu. Meanwhile, the computer setting of The Grid made a show-stopping appearance in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, which was recently re-released for PlayStation 4. There has been talk of a franchise relaunch starring Jared Leto, but time will tell if the project ever makes it off the ground.

Tron was a film that Disney was ready to turn into the next big franchise. Not only did they spend a pretty penny on the long-awaited sequel, Tron: Legacy, but they also spent money on the TV side of things for the ambitious serialized animated series Tron: Uprising. Sadly, Tron: Legacy didn’t do so well at the box office. It made $400 million, but with its $170 million budget, it wasn’t quite enough to justify a sequel. Similarly, Tron: Uprising sort of fizzled on TV despite its decent execution, and just like that, a potential franchise sort of came and went.
This hasn’t stopped conversations about a sequel from coming out every so often. While it wasn’t a massive hit, there was a loyal fanbase for the franchise who have been hungry for years at the prospect of a new Tron film. Speaking with Collider, Tron: Legacy director...

The Oscar for best animated short film may not generate nearly as much attention as other categories, but it strikes an exciting contrast with the more traditional forms of storytelling found throughout other categories.
These films usually celebrate animators from around the world — including a number of up-and-comers — who apply a range of visual techniques and sophisticated concepts only possible in the animated medium. This year is entirely North American, but still features a lot of different approaches — and yet, ironically, the frontrunner in the category is a very familiar name: Pixar.

The latest in the Lego cinematic universe (did I really just say that? Sounds surreal…) The Lego Ninjago Movie is the feature film directorial debut of Charlie Bean, who previously worked on the animated series Tron: Uprising.

Today, Warner Bros. released a full trailer, and it features a ton of entertaining footage showing off some great humor. This looks like it will be a blast and a worthy addition to the studio's Lego movie franchise.

Led by Master Wu, as wise-cracking as he is wise, they must defeat evil warlord Garmadon, The Worst Guy Ever, who also happens to be Lloyd’s dad. Today we have our first look at the latest brick-built CG animated film with the release of the The Lego Ninjago Movie trailer. The enormous success of Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Lego Movie, and another certain box office bonanza courtesy of Chris McKay’s The Lego Batman Movie, made this new film an obvious choice.
The toy range on which this new movie is based was originally released in 2011. Quickly adding engaging characters and a cohesive world, blending modern and ancient elements, to Lego’s previous ninja set, Ninjago has spawned dozens of sets and figures. There are whole libraries of books as well as six series of animated TV adventures. A feature film based on the toy range will have a huge audience eager to catch the Masters of Spinjitzu on the big screen.

After The Lego Movie proved to be one of the surprise hits (and also one of the best animated films) of its respective year, Warner Bros. quickly moved ahead on follow-ups. Before an official sequel will arrive in 2019, we’ll be getting two features in the cinematic universe. With this week’s The Lego Batman Movie (our review), we’re also getting the first trailer for The Lego Ninjago Movie ahead of its fall release.
Produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and directed by Charlie Bean (Tron: Uprising), the voice cast features Dave Franco, Justin Theroux, Fred Armisen, Abbi Jacobson, Olivia Munn, Kumail Nanjiani, Michael Peña, Zach Woods, and Jackie Chan. Based on the TV show and toy line, it features secret ninja warriors teaming up to fight an evil warlord.

I had no idea the Ninjago Lego franchise was so big! I guess I could've assumed seeing as it had its own TV show, but geez, what a lineup for a children's film! Collider says the Lego Ninjago film doesn't come out until around 2018, but the cast list has been announced and it's pretty nuts! Take a look:
Jackie Chan is Master WuDave Franco is LloydMichael Peña is KaiAbbi Jacobson is NyaKumail Nanjiani is JayZach Woods is ZaneFred Armisen is Cole
The movie itself is being written by the writers behind the Cartoon Network series and the team of directors includes Tron: Uprising's Charlie Bean. I was a Huge fan of the Tron: Uprising series, so that alone has me excited for this project! The rest is just icing on the cake!
