Star Trek: The Animated Series is something of a red-headed step-child for the vaunted sci-fi franchise. Conceived as a kid-friendly continuation of The Original Series' five-year mission, it was abandoned by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and virtually ignored for many years. It has since been restored and is now widely available, but it's left a number of questions in its wake.
The biggest is whether or not Star Trek: The Animated Series is canon. The short answer is "yes," though it took a convoluted path there, and its status remained open on the canon front for many years. Furthermore, its cheap animation and weird storylines don't always fit into popular conceptions about the franchise. Reconciling them with the rest of Star Trek requires a little work. That said, the creative DNA and other factors are too close to The Original Series to ignore.

This year marks the 50th anniversary since Star Trek entered the animation medium with the premiere of the Emmy Award-winning Star Trek: The Animated Series in 1973. With Star Trek getting a resurgence, including new animated series like Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy, CBS Studios is looking to commemorate the milestone anniversary in style with a series of animated shorts and a comic book through Idw Publishing, with art by Jonathan Case. Director Casper Kelly has created five animated shorts as part of Star Trek: The Animated Celebration, with franchise veterans Riker, Quark, Neelix, and Saru among those already confirmed. The shorts are expected to premiere later this year.
In an exclusive interview with Cbr at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, Star Trek: Animated Celebration director Casper Kelly shared his connection to the Star Trek franchise, teased what fans can expect from the animated shorts, and dished on development behind the upcoming comic book tie-in.

For fans of long-spanning franchises, keeping the details of the universe consistent is only logical. With 57 years of stories in television, films, books and comics, Star Trek has a whole galaxy. Thus, what matters most is Star Trek canon, much of which came from The Animated Series. However, Gene Roddenberry liked to pretend the cartoon never existed.
Roddenberry agreed to The Animated Series because the original Star Trek drew massive ratings in syndication. Since its best numbers came from the "after school" hour, NBC agreed to a Saturday morning cartoon. The freedom of animation intrigued him, and he tapped his best writer, Dorothy "D.C." Fontana, to effectively run the show. Still, it was the 1970s, so her title was only "associate producer." Yet, she was responsible for ensuring the episodes told stories worthy of the series. She, naturally, hired other writers from the live-action series. The canon of Star Trek...

One of the most decorated Starfleet Captains of all time, Captain James T. Kirk has made many appearances across various Star Trek properties, beginning, of course, with Star Trek: The Original Series. Originated by William Shatner, Captain Kirk is best known as the Captain of the USS Enterprise. Though not the first Captain to command that iconic ship, he was the first one audiences truly got to know. With his distinct acting style, William Shatner made Captain Kirk a household name and helped launch a beloved and enduring franchise.
Star Trek: The Original Series followed Kirk, his First Officer, Spock (Leonard Nimoy), the ship's Doctor, Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley), and the rest of the Enterprise crew as they explored the galaxy. That first show that began in 1966 has since spawned 10 more television shows and 13 movies, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The Enterprise has since had several Captains,...
