Veteran TV composer Mark Snow, widely celebrated for his work on the theme for The X-Files, has passed away. He was 78 years old.

Per Variety, Snow died on Friday at his home in Connecticut. No additional details about the circumstances of his passing were divulged. His passing was further confirmed by fellow composer Sean Callery (24), a close friend of Snow's for over three decades.

"His limitless talent and boundless creativity was matched only by the generosity he bestowed upon other composers who sought his guidance," said Callery, who saw Snow as a mentor. "He would give the most inspiring and intelligent feedback when listening to the work of other young artists (myself included). He combined his decades of experience with the encouragement that composers cultivate: to trust in themselves, embrace their own unique voice, and learn to rely on their own instincts. I Know What You Did Last Summer writer-director Jenn Kaytin Robinson wanted Sarah Michelle Gellar to return for the legacy sequel just as badly as the fans, if not more.

"I tried, okay? I harassed her!" Robinson revealed during a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Alas, it wasn't meant to be. According to the filmmaker, Gellar was adamant that her character, Helen Shivers, was dead, telling Robinson, "I am dead. I am Sarah Dead Gellar."

To Gellar's credit, bringing Helen back in any meaningful way would be next to impossible. Her character's dead body is shown frozen on ice, another fact the actress made sure to remind Robinson of. Despite that, the director did say she pitched some "crazy s---," including the possibility of Helen being in hiding all this time.

Unless Gellar pulled a Ringer twin twist at some point between 1997 and the new movie, that wouldn't work either.

After a long time out of the spotlight, Sarah Michelle Gellar has been making a nice return to TV in the last few years. The actress got her start on All My Children, which won her a Daytime Emmy Award. She was then launched to stardom with the title role on the modern classic show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and added movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Gellar made a few more TV shows, such as Ringer and The Crazy Ones, before taking a break to concentrate on her family. However, Gellar is making a comeback, starting with 2023’s Wolf Pack, which ended after one season. She now has a recurring role on Dexter: Original Sin.

Less than six months after HBO released “The Franchise,” a Hollywood satire told from the perspective of a beleaguered film crew, and a little more than a year since Max wrapped “The Other Two,” a Hollywood satire told from the perspective of two siblings desperate to break big, Apple TV+ takes its turn reveling in the desirable and derisible business of film, only its new series, “The Studio,” makes the curious choice to focus on the trials and tribulations of the man at the top. Well, almost at the top. One of the tops anyway.

Seth Rogen (who also co-created the series and co-directs every episode with his friend and business partner Evan Goldberg) plays Matt Remick, a long-suffering studio executive who finally ascends to his dream job: the president of Continental Studios. Matt made a name for himself by championing an original superhero franchise, “Mk Ultra,” which has grossed $3.9 billion across several feature films.

Bill Simmons will remain as head of talk strategy at Spotify after reupping his contract there.

The podcast host and executive joined Spotify in 2020, after the company bought his website and podcast company, The Ringer. That podcast network now includes over 50 popular podcasts, including The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Rewatchables and The Ryen Russillo Podcast.

Simmons will report to the new head of podcast business, Roman Wasenmüller.

“Spotify is one of the best content companies in the world,” he said. “I’ve been in enough work situations at this point that you just kinda know when you’re in the right spot. I think all of us are motivated to do something pretty special in the talk and video space.”

The company notes that The Ringer has been adding video episodes to the majority of its podcast titles, as Spotify now views video as a larger part of its platform.

This week, Saturday Night Live revived "Mid-Day News" for the second time. The sketch is the brain-child, and favorite, of SNL star Ego Nwodim.

Host Shane Gillis joined Nwodim, Heidi Gardner, and Kenan Thompson for "Mid-Day News 2" during the March 1 episode. The premise features two white and two Black new anchors getting in an escalating competition over crime stories.

The original aired on October 5, 2019. Host Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Alex Moffat squared off against Nwodim and Thompson. In an interview with The Ringer, Nwodim explained how her real-life anxiety while watching the news inspired the sketch.

Seth Meyers had one of the longest tenures in Saturday Night Live history. In the impressive and extensive catalog of sketches he's responsible for writing, one stands out as his all-time favorite.

Meyers joined Saturday Night Live in 2001 as a cast member. However, he made his SNL legacy as a writer, serving as head writer from 2006 to 2014.

Few people seem to have the same appreciation for Saturday Night Live and its history as Meyers. So it's worth paying close attention when he discusses his best sketch and what made it so special.

In an interview with The Ringer, Meyers named "Darrell's House" as the best sketch he'd ever written for the show. It came during a 2013 episode hosted by comedian Zach Galifianakis.

The sketch is a rarity in Saturday Night Live history because it came in two parts. It's not often that a sketch gets a sequel or a follow-up in the same episode.

In every generation, there is a chosen one — again.

Variety has learned from sources that a sequel series to the beloved show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is nearing a pilot order at Hulu.

Sources say that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to once again play the iconic title character in the untitled project, although it would focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series.

Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce. Chloé Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar would also executive produce along with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B, while Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce. Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton were all executive producers on the original “Buffy” series.

More than two decades after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended its seven-season run, the beloved supernatural drama is eyeing a revival with a new chapter in the franchise. A followup series is nearing a pilot order from Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to star, reprising her signature role as Buffy Summers, sources said. Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, a self-professed lifelong Buffy fan, is set to direct the pilot, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face). The reboot hails from Buffy the Vampire Slayer studio 20th Television and Disney sibling Searchlight TV where Zhao has been under a first-look deal.

Beyond the pilot order, I hear the reboot is starting a writers room soon, a sign that Hulu and the studios have high expectations for the project going to series. It is unclear yet whether other original Buffy cast members would return; that is considered likely.

On September 15, 2023, three-time Daytime Emmy Award winner Billy Miller passed away following a lengthy battle with bipolar disorder, just two days shy of what would have been his 44th birthday. Two months later, his death was officially ruled as suicide by the Travis County Medical Examiner.

On the first anniversary of his death, and just two days short of what would have been his 45th birthday, fans of the beloved actor took to social media on Sunday to share thoughts and memories of Miller, including photos, videos and other forms of media.

“He was the best actor! He could take on a role and make it so good! Rest In Peace Billy you are so missed,” said one user on X (formerly Twitter). “Billy, you’ll always be remembered this way – you will get the justice that you deserve. Thank you for sharing yourself with the rest of us,” said another.

Exactly one year after soap vet Billy Miller passed away, his former General Hospital co-star Kelly Monaco is paying tribute for the first time.

“Duces ‘I’ve got your back and you always had mine’ I will tell our story soon enough,” Monaco captioned an Instagram photo of the pair smiling with roses in their teeth on Sunday. “I love and miss you… and beyond.”

In December 2023, the first part of Zack Snyder's sci-fi epic "Rebel Moon" was released on Netflix to cold reviews and audience indifference. The story of "Rebel Moon" followed a rebel named Kora who knew that an evil Empire was traveling to her home world -- the titular rebel moon -- to steal all their grain and force the natives to starvation. Kora trekked out into the galaxy to collect whatever ragtag warriors she could find, hoping to hire them as her homeworld's scant defenders. 

The story, of course, was adapted directly from Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic "Seven Samurai," and no review of Snyder's film was complete without direct comparison's to the master's work. Even the plot point of stolen grain is common between the two films.

Sarah Michelle Gellar will boss around a certain serial killer in training in Dexter: Original Sin. In a special guest starring role, Gellar will play Tanya Martin, the CSI Chief at the Miami Metro Police Department and Dexter Morgan’s (Patrick Gibson) new boss.

The 10-episode original drama series from Paramount+ With Showtime, set in 1991 Miami, follows Dexter, a student who is refining his killer skills with the help and support of his adoptive father Harry (Christian Slater). In his dad, he finds solace and understanding, especially as his bloodthirsty urges grow and can no longer be ignored. Galligan was the New York City-born son of a corporate lawyer and a psychologist when, in his late teens, he landed his first major Hollywood audition. The film was Paul Mazursky's contemporized adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Tempest," and it promised to be a powerhouse actor's showcase what with John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands already cast in the lead roles.

Dear Felicity, from producer J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Audio and Spotify’s The Ringer, will debut Wednesday, March 13, with new episodes arriving every Wednesday on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other major podcast platforms.

While most “rewatch” podcasts are structured in an episode-by-episode format, Dear Felicity will instead cover themes and story arcs, with topics focusing on Felicity, The WB, the careers of those involved, and how the television business functioned at the time.

Echo and Reservation Dogs standout Devery Jacobs will be honored at this year’s Atx TV Festival with the 2024 Breakthrough Award. The award is given to a creative “whose voice has made a distinct impact on the current moment in TV and whose work exemplifies the emotional, entertaining, and artistic possibilities of the medium”, the festival announced Wednesday.

Jacobs will discuss her career in a one-on-one conversation, including her multi-hyphenate role as actor, writer and director on FX’s critically acclaimed series Reservation Dogs, her recent role in Marvel Studios’ Echo, and her producorial debut feature film, Backspot, in which she also stars.

Sundance Institute CEO Joanna Vicente has addressed the possibility of a move for the Sundance Film Festival out of Park City, where it has taken place since the early ’80s.

Vicente was the surprise guest at the live-taping of Puck founding partner Matt Belloni‘s Ringer podcast The Town. During the wide-ranging conversation that touched on everything from the Netflix acquisition of Fair Play to the five-year plan for the festival, Belloni asked Vicente about the state of negotiations for staying in Park City.

The English-language title of Hayao Miyazaki’s latest feature at Studio Ghibli is misleadingly simple. The Boy and the Heron suggests an Aesop-like fable in the vein of The Ant and the Grasshopper or The Hare and the Fox. The film itself has nothing like the clarity of a fable. It’s crowded, at times to the point of narrative incoherence, with enchanting but mystifying episodes that elude a single reading.

It’s the story of Mahito, a boy in 1940s Tokyo who loses his mother in a wartime fire. A year later, his father remarries her sister and starts a new family, moving them out to the aunt’s childhood countryside home. There, Mahito is plagued by a menacing heron who lures him to a mysterious tower built by his grand-uncle with the promise of seeing his mother alive.

Amelia Heinle, who co-starred with Billy Miller on The Young and the Restless, is remembering her acting partner following his death.

In a touching tribute that Heinle shared on Instagram, the soap star posted a quote from Miller from something he shared with her about his childhood.

“My favorite thing growing up was hiding out from the rain in our little barn with a tin roof on it, it’s still my favorite sound. Listening to it coming down and the way it gave me peace,” read the quote from 2010.

Heinle plays the role of Victoria Newman in the daytime soap, while Miller played the role of Billy Abbott. The fictional characters wed on Y&r the same year that Miller shared this memory with Heinle.

Billy Miller's mother is speaking out about the circumstances surrounding her son's tragic death.

As previously reported, Miller died at 43 on Friday, September 15, two days before his 44th birthday.

At the time, details about how the daytime TV staple had died were not revealed.

Miller's mother has released the following statement to Soap Opera Digest:

"I want to personally thank the many fans and personal friends for the overwhelming amount of love, prayers and condolences sent to me and my family on the devastating death of my beautiful son Bj — Billy Miller.

"He fought a long hard valiant battle with bipolar depression for years. He did everything he could to control the disease.

"He loved his family, his friends and his fans but in the end the disease won the fight and he surrendered his life. The other causes of death being told are not true. I wish they were but they just aren't.
