Veteran TV composer Mark Snow, widely celebrated for his work on the theme for The X-Files, has passed away. He was 78 years old.
Per Variety, Snow died on Friday at his home in Connecticut. No additional details about the circumstances of his passing were divulged. His passing was further confirmed by fellow composer Sean Callery (24), a close friend of Snow's for over three decades.
"His limitless talent and boundless creativity was matched only by the generosity he bestowed upon other composers who sought his guidance," said Callery, who saw Snow as a mentor. "He would give the most inspiring and intelligent feedback when listening to the work of other young artists (myself included). He combined his decades of experience with the encouragement that composers cultivate: to trust in themselves, embrace their own unique voice, and learn to rely on their own instincts. Johnny Knoxville has been tapped to host the all-new Fear Factor: The Next Chapter (working title), it was announced today by Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network. The iconic reality competition Fear Factor is coming back bigger, bolder, and more daring.
Dropped into an unforgiving, remote location, a group of strangers will live together under one roof, and face mind-blowing stunts, harrowing challenges, and a twisted game of social strategy where trust is fleeting — and fear is a weapon. Only one contestant will conquer all their fears and walk away with the massive grand prize.
“Johnny Knoxville is the champion of fearless entertainment,” said Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network. “His wild sense of humor, unmatched ability to push boundaries and take on the extreme makes him the perfect fit to lead this bold new reinvention of Fear Factor.”

I can’t decide which character displayed their growth best this season: Burgess or Ruzek.
They’ve both had strong enough seasons that it feels like the season has been theirs for the taking, and Chicago Pd Season 12 Episode 20 was another example, giving us more insight into their family life and growth.
Ruzek is such a family man, and nothing has put that into perspective as much as Chicago Pd Season 12.
(Lori Allen/NBC) Catching Cases in the Off Time
It seems Chicago Pd isn’t tired of having intelligence members catch random cases while off duty.
This time, we had the endearing opener of Ruzek with his father, checking in on Disco Bob and trying to ensure that he had handled all of Bob’s business.

Lenox finally got the storyline she deserves on Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 20.
Hayes has been acting borderline suspicious since he and Lenox met, and Naomi’s explanation of what he did to her made total sense.
I just wish the medical drama hadn’t dropped the ball on one of its other biggest stories to make room for this.
(Elizabeth Sissons/NBC) The Nurses’ Strike Was Settled Almost As Quickly As It Began
Maggie and Sharon were caught in the middle of the conflict with the nurses in different ways.
Sharon was stuck between the board and the nurses. She was more sympathetic to the nurses’ plight, having been a nurse herself, but Miranda saw the nurses as troublemakers and was looking for ways to get rid of them altogether.

I Know What You Did Last Summer writer-director Jenn Kaytin Robinson wanted Sarah Michelle Gellar to return for the legacy sequel just as badly as the fans, if not more.
"I tried, okay? I harassed her!" Robinson revealed during a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Alas, it wasn't meant to be. According to the filmmaker, Gellar was adamant that her character, Helen Shivers, was dead, telling Robinson, "I am dead. I am Sarah Dead Gellar."
To Gellar's credit, bringing Helen back in any meaningful way would be next to impossible. Her character's dead body is shown frozen on ice, another fact the actress made sure to remind Robinson of. Despite that, the director did say she pitched some "crazy s---," including the possibility of Helen being in hiding all this time.
Unless Gellar pulled a Ringer twin twist at some point between 1997 and the new movie, that wouldn't work either.

Even as fans are eager to see the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, Sarah Michelle Gellar has another TV show in the works!
After a long time out of the spotlight, Sarah Michelle Gellar has been making a nice return to TV in the last few years. The actress got her start on All My Children, which won her a Daytime Emmy Award. She was then launched to stardom with the title role on the modern classic show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and added movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Gellar made a few more TV shows, such as Ringer and The Crazy Ones, before taking a break to concentrate on her family. However, Gellar is making a comeback, starting with 2023’s Wolf Pack, which ended after one season. She now has a recurring role on Dexter: Original Sin.

Sarah Michelle Gellar has lined up her next TV role, and it's set in a story that book lovers may be familiar with. According to Deadline, the Cruel Intentions actress has been tapped to star in and executive produce Bad Summer People, a small-screen adaptation of Emma Rosenblum's bestselling debut novel, which has previously drawn comparisons to the critically acclaimed HBO show The White Lotus. That series, created by Mike White, has enjoyed significant success during past award seasons (including 12 nominations at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards).
In the same way that The White Lotus focuses on a bunch of privileged people on a swanky vacation, Bad Summer People centers around a group of wealthy characters on holiday in the fictional haven of Salcombe, Fire Island – but things take a decidedly dark turn when a body is discovered off the side of the boardwalk, revealing a web of life-shattering secrets,...

Better Call Saul, the spin-off to the iconic show Breaking Bad, almost had a different story when it was first conceived by creator Vince Gilligan. The show was initially planned to be totally different from the Walter White series in every aspect.
Vince Gilligan shared that he and his co-creator, Peter Gould, initially planned to make the spin-off in the lines of a popular adult-animated sitcom. But it was not long before the creators realized that the idea was too wild to be executed and abandoned it for good.

Less than six months after HBO released “The Franchise,” a Hollywood satire told from the perspective of a beleaguered film crew, and a little more than a year since Max wrapped “The Other Two,” a Hollywood satire told from the perspective of two siblings desperate to break big, Apple TV+ takes its turn reveling in the desirable and derisible business of film, only its new series, “The Studio,” makes the curious choice to focus on the trials and tribulations of the man at the top. Well, almost at the top. One of the tops anyway.
Seth Rogen (who also co-created the series and co-directs every episode with his friend and business partner Evan Goldberg) plays Matt Remick, a long-suffering studio executive who finally ascends to his dream job: the president of Continental Studios. Matt made a name for himself by championing an original superhero franchise, “Mk Ultra,” which has grossed $3.9 billion across several feature films.

Bill Simmons will remain as head of talk strategy at Spotify after reupping his contract there.
The podcast host and executive joined Spotify in 2020, after the company bought his website and podcast company, The Ringer. That podcast network now includes over 50 popular podcasts, including The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Rewatchables and The Ryen Russillo Podcast.
Simmons will report to the new head of podcast business, Roman Wasenmüller.
“Spotify is one of the best content companies in the world,” he said. “I’ve been in enough work situations at this point that you just kinda know when you’re in the right spot. I think all of us are motivated to do something pretty special in the talk and video space.”
The company notes that The Ringer has been adding video episodes to the majority of its podcast titles, as Spotify now views video as a larger part of its platform.

This week, Saturday Night Live revived "Mid-Day News" for the second time. The sketch is the brain-child, and favorite, of SNL star Ego Nwodim.
Host Shane Gillis joined Nwodim, Heidi Gardner, and Kenan Thompson for "Mid-Day News 2" during the March 1 episode. The premise features two white and two Black new anchors getting in an escalating competition over crime stories.
The original aired on October 5, 2019. Host Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Alex Moffat squared off against Nwodim and Thompson. In an interview with The Ringer, Nwodim explained how her real-life anxiety while watching the news inspired the sketch.
"Whatever sort of crime is happening—there’s a suspect on the loose, and we’re trying to find the suspect—I’m always like, 'My goodness, what a terrible crime!' And I go, 'Please don’t let it be a Black person.' Because we don’t need that kind of press. I...

Seth Meyers had one of the longest tenures in Saturday Night Live history. In the impressive and extensive catalog of sketches he's responsible for writing, one stands out as his all-time favorite.
Meyers joined Saturday Night Live in 2001 as a cast member. However, he made his SNL legacy as a writer, serving as head writer from 2006 to 2014.
Few people seem to have the same appreciation for Saturday Night Live and its history as Meyers. So it's worth paying close attention when he discusses his best sketch and what made it so special.
In an interview with The Ringer, Meyers named "Darrell's House" as the best sketch he'd ever written for the show. It came during a 2013 episode hosted by comedian Zach Galifianakis.
The sketch is a rarity in Saturday Night Live history because it came in two parts. It's not often that a sketch gets a sequel or a follow-up in the same episode.

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Sequel Series With Sarah Michelle Gellar Returning Nears Hulu Pilot Order
In every generation, there is a chosen one — again.
Variety has learned from sources that a sequel series to the beloved show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is nearing a pilot order at Hulu.
Sources say that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to once again play the iconic title character in the untitled project, although it would focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series.
Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce. Chloé Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar would also executive produce along with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B, while Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce. Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton were all executive producers on the original “Buffy” series.

More than two decades after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended its seven-season run, the beloved supernatural drama is eyeing a revival with a new chapter in the franchise. A followup series is nearing a pilot order from Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to star, reprising her signature role as Buffy Summers, sources said. Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, a self-professed lifelong Buffy fan, is set to direct the pilot, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face). The reboot hails from Buffy the Vampire Slayer studio 20th Television and Disney sibling Searchlight TV where Zhao has been under a first-look deal.
Beyond the pilot order, I hear the reboot is starting a writers room soon, a sign that Hulu and the studios have high expectations for the project going to series. It is unclear yet whether other original Buffy cast members would return; that is considered likely.

There's so much to love about 1984's "The Terminator" that it's hard to imagine how much of a slog it was to get made. Director James Cameron worked on a tight budget under incredible time pressures and was constantly forced to pivot when things went awry. Still, he produced a sci-fi horror classic that betrays nothing of its troubled production. So much of his directorial debut (we'll gloss over his part in "Piranha II: The Spawning") just worked, but for Cameron, without Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor at the center, there was no movie.
Producer Gale Anne Hurd saved "The Terminator" from a happy ending. Had certain studio executives had their way, the iconic scene that manifested Cameron's nightmarish vision of a Terminator exoskeleton rising from the fire would have been cut in favor of a final shot of Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) and Sarah Connor hugging. Imagine the legacy...

Director James Mangold’s latest film, A Complete Unknown, is getting a lot of praise these days due in part to Timothée Chalamet’s electric performance as Bob Dylan. Long before the filmmaker explored the legendary singer-songwriter, though, his 2005 film Walk the Line took fans inside the life of the iconic Johnny Cash. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, the film was a bona fide hit that earned several award wins and even a satirical spoof led by John C. Reilly – Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Now, nearly 20 years later, Mangold says he wasn’t offended by the 2007 comedy but instead found it "hilarious."
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the Complete Unknown director addressed concerns that Walk Hard scared him off doing musical biopics for a while and said that nothing could be further from the truth. He pointed to other satire films that didn’t fail to spook directors such as Robert Eggers,...

In December 2023, the first part of Zack Snyder's sci-fi epic "Rebel Moon" was released on Netflix to cold reviews and audience indifference. The story of "Rebel Moon" followed a rebel named Kora who knew that an evil Empire was traveling to her home world -- the titular rebel moon -- to steal all their grain and force the natives to starvation. Kora trekked out into the galaxy to collect whatever ragtag warriors she could find, hoping to hire them as her homeworld's scant defenders.

Zach Braff never thought he’d beat out Quentin Tarantino at any awards show, let alone the Grammys.
Braff recalled to The Ringer that Tarantino congratulated him in a classically subversive way after the “Garden State” soundtrack won the award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media over Tarantino’s “Kill Bill: Vol. 2.”
“I was up against Quentin Tarantino. I certainly didn’t think there would ever be a chance where I would beat Quentin Tarantino at anything,” Braff said. “My father wanted to come, and I was like, ‘Dad, there’s no way I’m gonna win a Grammy. Tarantino is winning the Grammy, and you’re wasting your trip from Jersey out here.’ And then we fucking won! I couldn’t believe it.”
Braff continued, “Tarantino jokingly said, ‘You stole my fucking Grammy, man,’ and then gave me a big smile and a hug. He was super sweet and supportive.

Alan Ritchson is a name that not everyone has heard, but it's about time this hardworking actor got his due. With the same goofy charm, strong jawline, and muscular physique as Chris Pratt or Jason Momoa, Ritchson has star power that has been largely underappreciated by audiences and critics alike. Since his career took off in 2006, Ritchson has proven himself as a scene-stealer in small roles and a bona fide leading man.
He can make dialogue sound clever, intimidating, or hilarious depending on the scene and the character he's portraying. He has the moves for action scenes, the timing for comedy, and has even proven himself as a capable voice-over actor in animated media. Eddie Murphy initially hesitated to wear the same clothes in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F but was convinced by comparing Axel's jacket to Indiana Jones' fedora. Murphy's decision to keep the iconic look in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F contributes to the film's nostalgic appeal.

Phoebe Cates nearly ended Zach Galligan's career before she helped launch it.
Galligan was the New York City-born son of a corporate lawyer and a psychologist when, in his late teens, he landed his first major Hollywood audition. The film was Paul Mazursky's contemporized adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Tempest," and it promised to be a powerhouse actor's showcase what with John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands already cast in the lead roles.
Mazursky and casting director Juliet Taylor were looking for a young actor to play the film's version of Ferdinand, the Prince of Naples who falls in love with Prospero's daughter Miranda. Given the production's pedigree, Galligan was competing against and reading with a who's who of up-and-coming performers, many of whom already had a movie or two under their belt.

Ringer left fans wanting more with its unresolved mysteries in the season 1 finale. Sarah Michelle Gellar's limited run plan for the show could have made it more rewatchable. Gellar's pregnancy led to the show's cancellation, but a modern premiere might have shown a different outcome.
Sarah Michelle Gellar has had many fantastic roles throughout her career, but one of her best shows still needs an ending after 12 years. After playing Buffy Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer in all seven seasons, Gellar sought something unlike the supernatural drama. Her follow-up vehicle was considerably different from anything else on TV at that point, making it a hot property before it landed on a network. The idea, coupled with luring an in-demand actress back to the small screen, helped get it a lot of attention when it premiered in 2011.

Joe Dante's "Gremlins" is a one-of-a-kind blockbuster from an era when studios hadn't quite yet developed the formula for producing hit movies. In the early 1980s, executives under pressure to find projects capable of breaking the coveted $100 million domestic mark relied heavily on movie stars or bestselling books, but to strike gold you needed vision. That meant finding a visionary.
There were two 30-something film brats who fit this profile during that period: George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. And since Lucas was, at the moment, a two-franchise man with "Star Wars" and the just-taking-off Indiana Jones series, Spielberg, who'd just set up his production company Amblin Entertainment at Universal Pictures, was the closest thing to a Walt Disney alive and unfrozen in Hollywood.

Paramount+ has canceled Wolf Pack after its first season due to delays in development caused by writer and actor strikes. The streamer was not willing to wait until at least 2025 for the show to return, as it would cost more money to market it after such a long hiatus. During the wide-ranging conversation that touched on everything from the Netflix acquisition of Fair Play to the five-year plan for the festival, Belloni asked Vicente about the state of negotiations for staying in Park City.
“Park City is part of Sundance,” Vicente answered. “It’s a beautiful location. It’s kind of remote. We get immersed into the festival.” At that point, Belloni interjected to say, “I feel a but coming,” adding that in his conversations with Uber drivers, restaurant employees and ski industry insiders, “They don’t like Sundance.”

Warning: contains plot spoilers for The Boy and the Heron.
The English-language title of Hayao Miyazaki’s latest feature at Studio Ghibli is misleadingly simple. The Boy and the Heron suggests an Aesop-like fable in the vein of The Ant and the Grasshopper or The Hare and the Fox. The film itself has nothing like the clarity of a fable. It’s crowded, at times to the point of narrative incoherence, with enchanting but mystifying episodes that elude a single reading.
It’s the story of Mahito, a boy in 1940s Tokyo who loses his mother in a wartime fire. A year later, his father remarries her sister and starts a new family, moving them out to the aunt’s childhood countryside home. There, Mahito is plagued by a menacing heron who lures him to a mysterious tower built by his grand-uncle with the promise of seeing his mother alive.
