The $130 Million Sci-Fi Flop That Sent M. Night Shyamalan to "Director Jail" Is Now on Prime Video
Image
When M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender flopped critically and commercially in 2010, the consensus was that the filmmaker should perhaps not write his own movies going forward. The Last Airbender was widely ridiculed for its stilted dialogue, a criticism that Shyamalan would attract earlier as well, and for its lack of fidelity to the source material. For his next project, Shyamalan seemed to take popular advice into account; he made the science-fiction action film After Earth, written by Gary Whitta. But the movie was an even bigger flop than The Last Airbender, effectively sending Shyamalan to "director jail" until he bailed himself out with (literally his own money) some years later.

A Will Smith Sci-Fi Movie Originally Had An Agatha Christie Vibe
Image
Will Smith's experiences in the science fiction genre are a bit of a roller coaster, but most movie-goers would agree that the highs of his career feel nothing short of exhilarating when you encounter them for the first time. Yes, you might have to go through an "After Earth" in his catalogue to get there, but you're rewarded with titles like "I Am Legend" for your troubles. One of the more highly-regarded entries in the Smith filmography is "I, Robot," and the beloved Isaac Asimov riff was originally going to be an Agatha Christie-tinged mystery. But Walt Disney Pictures wanted some changes after acquiring the project, which might have ended up working out for the creative team, judging by that massive $353 million box office return for "I, Robot."

"I, Robot" is a 2004 sci-fi movie starring Will Smith as detective Del Spooner, and it's reminiscent of so many other...

Image
Will Smith reflects on his heartbreak as a father after Jaden’s emancipation request (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Will Smith’s blockbuster-filled career may look like an endless highlight reel, but one flop left him devastated—not for himself, but for his son, Jaden. In his memoir, Will, the King Richard star opens up about a painful chapter from 2013 when he and Jaden took a chance with After Earth.

The After Earth Fallout: Will and Jaden Smith’s Toughest Challenge

After Earth wasn’t just a box-office bomb; it shook Will and Jaden Smith’s bond to the core. The father-son duo hoped to deliver sci-fi magic, but critics—and audiences—were unimpressed. ’The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Feeds M. Night Shyamalan’s Most Divisive Hit to the Wolves at Global Box Office
Image
Having completed a week of release in theaters worldwide, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps witnessed a hefty second-weekend drop. The movie faced competition from a trio of new releasesthis weekend, while fending off holdover hits at the same time. That said, The Fantastic Fourhas grossed $368 million worldwide, which sets it on course for a $600 million-plus finish when all is said and done. But first, it can celebrate overtaking one of director M. Night Shyamalan’s most divisive films, The Village, and also his worst-rated, The Last Airbender.

Released in 2004, The Village featured a top-tier cast, grossing nearly $260 million at the worldwide box office against a reported budget of $40 million. However, unlike Shyamalan’s previous two hits — The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable — the movie divided critics and crowds. Opinion was particularly divided on the film’s climactic twist, but Roger Deakins’ cinematography and James Newton Howard’s score received universal acclaim.

Date With Kylie Jenner Where Jaden Smith Turned into Iron Man For a Day
Image
Jaden Smith and Kylie Jenner were reportedly an item during the 2013-2014 period. During one of their date outings, Smith famously rocked a very legit Iron Man suit. He wasn’t putting himself out there for Marvel to spot him, but he tried to engage with a few friends and fans in the costume. Jenner didn’t seem bothered by the After Earth actor appearing in a costume.

The son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith enjoyed some good food at a sushi joint with Jenner earlier that day, before they stepped out for some shopping. It was during this shopping spree that Smith grabbed the Iron Man costume for himself and changed into it without a second thought.

When the pictures of Jaden Smith in the Iron Man suit with Kylie Jenner by his side went viral at the time, people wanted to know whether Jenner was the Pepper...

Jaden Smith’s Acting Retirement: What is Will Smith’s Son Doing Now?
Image
Jaden Smith has largely disappeared from his on-screen roles in recent years. He has also had long periods of absence from acting in the past. His last major on-screen appearance was alongside Cara Delevingne in the 2020 film Life in a Year. Will Smith’s son first impressed us with his performance in The Pursuit of Happyness, which won multiple awards. He played 5-year-old Christopher Gardner Jr. in the film. He later appeared as Dre Parker alongside the legendary Jackie Chan in The Karate Kid.

Both this film and his collaboration with Justin Bieber for the song, Never Say Never, elevated his popularity at the time. He later released his debut mixtape, The Cool Cafe: Cool Tape Vol. 1, in 2012. However, he was devastated after his lead...

In 2021, the Costa Rica Film Commission and national Trade & Investment Promotion Agency Procomer established six Film Friendly Zones (Ffz), designated regions selected for their scenic diversity, ease of logistics and general available infrastructure to support productions. Within these regions, one can find a wide variety of natural landscapes, from pristine beaches to volcanoes and modern urban settings. Jaden Smith Outperformed Sylvester Stallone’s Bad Acting in Robert De Niro’s 31%-Rated Film
Image
It might be hard to imagine Jaden Smith outperforming major Hollywood names like Sylvester Stallone, but surprisingly, there’s one area where he did outshine the Oscar-nominated star: winning the Worst Actor award for an underwhelming performance in the 2013 sci-fi action film.

The films in question are Smith’s After Earth and Stallone’s Grudge Match, both of which were critically panned upon release. However, when it came time to decide who delivered the weaker performance, the dishonor ultimately went to Jaden Smith.

Jaden Smith appeared to be a rising star after his acclaimed performances in films like The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid. However, he struggled to maintain that momentum in subsequent roles, most notably in the 2013 sci-fi action film After Earth.

“He’s so handsome”: Zoe Kravitz’s Inappropriate Comments on 14-Year-Old Jaden Smith Came Back to Haunt Her
Image
Actress Zoe Kravitz is best known for playing the role of Selina Kyle / Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The film emerged as a critical and commercial success, giving Kravitz a boost in popularity.

Yet three years later, Kravitz has only made sporadic film appearances and her directorial debut also flew pretty much under the radar. One of the key reasons behind the actress’ seemingly sudden downfall is linked to her controversial comments.

In the past, Kravitz made some comments about Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith, after the two worked together on a movie. However, given the stark age difference between them and the latter being only fourteen at the time, these comments proved controversial and came back to haunt Kravitz.

Netflix ambushes subscribers with another stealth release
Image
Have you noticed that whenever a new movie pops up on Netflix with no advance notice, it tends to be - um, how do I say this - less than successful? The latest addition to their slate is another example of this practice.

We try to be diligent when we write about the coming attractions on your favorite streaming service. Inevitably, Netflix will throw a pretty big title into the lineup with little to no fanfare. Even Netflix's own announcement page leaves a lot of films out in the cold until they suddenly appear.

It's as if they haven't worked out the rights to the movies and shows months in advance but find them left on their corporate doorstep like sad little orphans. Like Venom: the Last Dance popping up out of nowhere.

A case in point is a thriller that debuted in theaters to pretty good numbers, $22 million in its first week.

And as if that isn't enough to already grab our collective attention, said film is reportedly an original supernatural romantic thriller, co-created by Shyamalan alongside The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks.

Now, you might've picked up on the fact that we say this superrommer (as nobody will ever call it) has been co-created by Shyamalan and Sparks as opposed to co-written by, but that's not an error. Rather, in a similar vein to Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke's parallel, multimedia collaboration on 2001: A Space Odyssey, the filmmaker and author have conceived this creative project together, but will be writing the story in their preferred mediums separately. Both versions...

Image
A successful Will Smith sci-fi movie has appeared on a major streaming chart. Will Smith is a rapper and Oscar-winning actor who first rose to prominence onscreen when he played the title role in the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which ran for six seasons between 1990 and 1996. He successfully transitioned into being a major movie star after playing lead roles in the 1995 action-comedy Bad Boys and the 1996 alien invasion movie Independence Day, the latter of which grossed $817.4 million and became the highest-grossing release of the year.

Although subsequent Will Smith movies have taken on a wide variety of genres, he starred in many science fiction movies after the runaway success of Independence Day. His sci-fi output includes the first three movies in the Men in Black franchise, the post-apocalyptic Richard Matheson adaptation I Am Legend, and M. Night Shyamalan's 2013 movie After Earth. Critically Panned Film By M. Night Shyamalan’s Daughter Finds New Life On Streaming After Changing Platforms
Image
While M. Night Shyamalanhas a complicated movie track record, his claim-to-fame 1999 film The Sixth Sense is still regarded as a seminal horror work today. As a result, Shyamalan's movie made the director synonymous with the twist ending. This trademark has gained him notoriety and criticism, with some audiences thinking that he over-relies on the twist. Shyamalan may have some good movies, but he has also produced a litany of critically panned projects, including The Last Airbender, After Earth, and The Happening.

In 2024, Shyamalan's two daughters joined the movie industry in two separate movies. In one of them, Suleka Shyamalan acted in her father's psychological thriller film Trap. Suleka played Lady Raven, the Taylor Swift-esque popstar at the heart of the movie. In addition, Shyamalan's other daughter made her directorial debut with a horror film this year. This movie was not well-received by critics at the time but is now...

Image
Will Smith is one of the most exceptional actors in Hollywood. Period. Whether it’s making us cry in The Pursuit of Happyness or having us doubled over with laughter in Bad Boys, the man knows exactly how to pull off any character and script thrown his way. Of course, there’s always going to be exceptions and the 2013 film with his son is one of them.

In 2013, Will Smith and Jaden Smith starred in the post-apocalyptical film, After Earth where ‘Danger is Real’ and ‘Fear is a Choice.’ However, the only “danger” we saw was the brutal reviews from critics that put Jaden Smith’s career on the line. So, while Will Smith can say that Wild Wild West may be a thorn in his side, it is really After Earth that might be his worst yet.

M. Night Shyamalans $82 Million 2024 Movie Continues Success 1 Month After Hitting Streaming
Image
M. Night Shyamalan's 2024 movie continues its streaming success. The first feature-length movies Shyamalan directed were Praying with Anger and Wide Awake, but it was The Sixth Sense's release in 1999 that gained him widespread recognition. The Sixth Sense received six Academy Award nominations and gave Shyamalan a reputation for directing and writing unpredictable stories that culminate in shocking, game-changing plot twists that recontextualize the entire movie.

Only a year after The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan continued to build this reputation with his unique take on superheroes and supervillains in Unbreakable, which led to the secret and well-received sequel, Split, in 2016. Shyamalan concluded the Unbreakable trilogy with Glass in 2019. While The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Split, and his 2002 movie Signs are well-regarded, many of M. Night Shyamalan's movies have been panned, including The Last Airbender, After Earth, and The Happening.

Margot Robbie & Will Smith Crime Thriller Claims No. 1 Spot On Netflix Charts
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

At one point, Will Smith was the biggest movie star in the world. While he had a bit of a PR snafu (to put it lightly) a couple of years ago when he slapped Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars, he's recovered well in the eyes of the public, given the success of this year's "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" at the box office. Margot Robbie, meanwhile, is about as big as modern stars get, with her rise to stardom culminating in last year's mega-hit "Barbie." So, what happens when you put these two big stars in a movie together? You get a number one hit on Netflix. It just so happens that the movie in question was made nearly a decade ago.

2015's "Focus," directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, recently made its way to Netflix and...

Jaden Smith and Will Smith are probably Hollywood’s most excellent father-son duos. Although the two had their fair share of conflicts, their relationship has always felt vibrant. Jaden’s debut on-screen with Will in The Pursuit of Happyness showcased their special bond. The Two Best M. Night Shyamalan Plot Twists Have One Thing In Common That Is Hard To Ignore
Image
Its hard to ignore that Philadelphia-born director M. Night Shyamalan has crafted one of the most indelible brands in filmmaking over the past 25 years. Ask the average movie fan to explain Shyamalans impact, and the answer is fairly simple: he consistently showcases a potent mix of skillful storytelling and unexpected plot twists that leave audiences reeling.

Among Shyamalan's extensive filmography, two movies stand out for their particularly mind-blowing twists: The Sixth Sense (1999) and Split (2016). These two films, separated by nearly two decades, share a compelling, hard-to-ignore connection.

Divisive M. Night Shyamalan Thriller Finds Streaming Success After $82M Box Office
Image
M. Night Shyamalan continues to work regularly in the thriller genre, delivering films with unpredictable narratives and big twists. The filmmaker's work in this genre dates back more than 25 years now, and his breakout film, The Sixth Sense (1999), still features one of the biggest narrative twists of his career. Not long after that seminal film, he delivered popular movies like Unbreakable (2000), Signs (2002), and The Village (2004).

Shyamalan didn't slow down in the 2010s and 2020s, however, and he affirmed his commitment to the thriller genre with titles including Split (2016), Glass (2019), Old (2021), and Knock at the Cabin (2023). Though many of Shyamalan's films become box office successes due to their modest budgets (which Shyamalan often self-finances), they do also sometimes prove divisive for audiences, with viewers divided on how effective the narratives and twists are. Shyamalan's most recent movie certainly fits into this camp.
